Mormon Decisions 10BYU Speeches, “Mortality and Our Eternal Journey,” January 14, 2003; “Excluding the Atonement, our purpose in coming to earth is the same as the Savior’s. He was born to be a king. If faithful, we also are promised thrones, kingdoms, and principalities (see D&C 132:19). Jesus’ kingdom was not of this world; neither is ours…” – BYU President Merrill J. Bateman

wedding ringsWhile gathering info for our Polygamy and Mormon Church Leaders series I kept noticing a common occurrence in the lives of these men. The issue for this article isn’t about polygamy (that’s for another day), rather my focus is on the age of the girls these men married.  I refer to them as girls because quite frankly that’s what they were; little girls, aka, children.

The last submission for our series included a young girl who was 13 years old when she married Perrigrine Sessions and each time I thought of that scenario I felt physically ill.  Sadly, many of the genealogy sites I referenced contained comments from his descendants who remarked they were surprised that ‘girls were married so young back then’.

Mormon Decisions 10
Doctrinal Commentary on the Pearl of Great Price, p 406-407;
“The position of the Church regarding the Negro may be understood when another doctrine of the Church is kept in mind; namely, that the conduct of spirits in the pre-mortal existence has some determining effect upon the conditions and circumstances under which these spirits take on mortality, and that while the details of the principle have not been made known, the principle itself indicates that the coming to this earth and taking on mortality is a privilege that is given to those who maintain their first estate; and that the worth of the principle is so great that spirits are willing to come to earth and take on bodies no matter what the handicap may be as to the kind of bodies they are to secure; and that among the handicaps, failure of the right to enjoy in mortality the blessings of the priesthood, is a handicap which spirits are willing to assume in order that they might come to earth. Under this principle there is no injustice whatsoever involved in this deprivation as to the holding of the Priesthood by Negroes.” – Hyrum Andrus, 1998

Mormon Decisions 10Of All Things! Classic Quotations of Hugh Nibley, p 76; “Do not begrudge existence to creatures that looked like men long, long ago, nor deny them a place in God’s affection or even a right to exaltation, for our scriptures allow them such. Nor am I overly concerned as to just when they might have lived, for their world is not our world. They have all gone away long before our people ever appeared. God assigned them their proper times and functions. “Before Adam,” CWHN 1:82” – Hugh Nibley, edited by FARMS, 1991

Mormon Decisions 10Conference Report, April 1939, Morning Meeting, p 57; “The negro is an unfortunate man. He has been given a black skin. But that is as nothing compared with that greater handicap that he is not permitted to receive the Priesthood and the ordinances of the temple, necessary to prepare men and women to enter into and enjoy a fulness of glory in the celestial kingdom. What is the reason for this condition, we ask, and I find it to my satisfaction to think that as spirit children of our Eternal Father they were not valiant in the fight” – George F. Richards

Mormon Decisions 10Selected Writings of Robert L. Millet: Gospel Scholars Series, p 190; “The four Gospels are particularly plain in setting forth the true nature of God and the various labors of the members of the Godhead. Indeed, one has to become involved in a stretching series of doctrinal maneuvers in order to derive the concept of Trinity or of a triune God in the New Testament…

Old-Testament-Gospel-Doctrine-Teachers-Manual-35570000The LDS OT Sunday school lesson for week six made me feel like I was in elementary school once again.  The way the Church presents their lessons have been a source of wonder for Melissa and me once we got going on these things and the reason why is because of their material.

Broad is the Way

Mormon Decisions 10The Three Kingdoms of Heaven; “Joseph and Sidney saw the terrestrial kingdom of heaven. People in the terrestrial kingdom were good people on earth, but they did not have faith in Jesus and did not obey all of the commandments.

Some of the people in the terrestrial kingdom did not believe the gospel when they heard it on earth but did accept it after they died. These people may see Jesus, but they cannot live with Him or Heavenly Father.”

Self-fulfilling Prophecy of Joseph in BoM

salt lake mormon temple 22 Nephi 3:14-15; “And thus prophesied Joseph, saying: Behold, that seer will the Lord bless; and they that seek to destroy him shall be confounded; for this promise, which I have obtained of the Lord, of the fruit of my loins, shall be fulfilled. Behold, I am sure of the fulfilling of this promise; 15 And his name shall be called after me; and it shall be after the name of his father. And he shall be like unto me; for the thing, which the Lord shall bring forth by his hand, by the power of the Lord shall bring my people unto salvation.”

False Teachers Thrust to Hell

salt lake mormon temple 22 Nephi 28:15; “O the wise, and the learned, and the rich, that are puffed up in the pride of their hearts, and all those who preach false doctrines, and all those who commit whoredoms, and pervert the right way of the Lord, wo, wo, wo be unto them, saith the Lord God Almighty, for they shall be thrust down to hell!”

Bible Not Necessary

Mormon Decisions 10A Marvelous Work and a Wonder, pg 40; “…the everlasting gospel could not be discovered through reading the Bible alone… this is the only Christian church in the world that did not have to rely upon the Bible for its organization and government…if we had no Bible we would still have all the needed direction and information through the revelations of the Lord to his servants, the prophets in these latter days.” – LeGrand Richards

Teaching Mormon Youth about the Godhead

Mormon DilemmasThe LDS Church has instituted a month long program on teaching their youth about the Mormon godhead.

What I found interesting was a one paragraph synopsis of what young men will learn about their “divine heritage” by discovering the nature of their god.

“In learning about the nature and roles of each member of the Godhead, young men can better understand their identity and divine heritage…”

Mormonism and Christianity

While I was cruising around the net for some research this evening I came across an article written in the 1984 edition of Ensign.

I find talks and articles like this one very telling about the Church. While the Church tries hard to fit in with the body of Christ, there’s still this little problem of false teachings. And the first false teaching of Mormonism began in the grove of trees with Joseph Smith and some spirit who told him there wasn’t one single person on the face of the earth that was following God.

Jesus; Polygamist and Founder of Christianity

The Seer, pg. 172; “…the great Messiah who was the founder of the Christian religion, was a polygamist…marrying many honorable wives himself…God the Father had a plurality of wives…the Son followed the example of his Father…both God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ inherit their wives in eternity as well as in time.” – Orson Pratt, 1857

Brigham Young is LDS Dictator

Journal of Discourses 7:19-20; What do you say, brethren and sisters? Do you not think it best for us to do right, each person individually being led by the dictations of the Holy Spirit, listening diligently to those who are appointed to lead, govern, and dictate this people? You know what I mean by this. President Young is our governor and our dictator. It is for me to walk with him, and for you to walk with those who go before you.” – Heber C. Kimball, Salt Lake City, July 16, 1854

Thought of the Day about Mormonism…er..Catholicism?

You know just when you think you’ve got a full plate and you’ve haphazardly “told” God you’re thankful He doesn’t toss any other “ism” your way?  Yeah, my piece of advice on that is DON’T DO IT!!!

I just received this e-mail a few minutes ago (April 30, 2012 – 7:10 pm) and thought I’d share it with my readers!  I was thinking it sounds more than just a little familiar…hmmm…I wonder why.   Enjoy!  And by the way, this nice person’s name is Matt.

The Efficacy of Jesus’ Blood

I came across this sermon given by Amasa Lyman on Christmas day in 1859. After 19 years of in-depth studying of Mormonism there’s little shock value left in me.  Today is the exception to the rule.

Journal of Discourses 7:297-299; “When we cling to what Jesus Christ has done for us, do you not see that our part will never be done? We may pray and sing, and pay Tithing, and go to church, and attend to all the outward forms of religion, and attend to all those things that thousands believed in doing, and then we shall find that our salvation will not be wrought out.”

Book of Mormon White and Delightsome

2 Nephi 30:6 (after 1981); “And then shall they rejoice; for they shall know that it is a blessing unto them from the hand of God; and their scales of darkness shall begin to fall from their eyes; and many generations shall not pass away among them, save they shall be a pure and a delightsome people.”
