“God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” — John 4:24

When someone looks for an explanation of who the Mormon god is, they’re sure to come across a litany of definitions. To ensure the Church does its job by confusing people, they sprinkle their list with biblical, and extra-biblical definitions. Sometimes their god is a spirit, and other times he’s an exalted man. D&C 20:26-28; “Not only those who believed after he came in the meridian of time, in the flesh, but all those from the beginning, even as many as were before he came, who believed in the words of the holy prophets, who spake as they were inspired by the gift of the Holy Ghost, who truly testified of him in all things, should have eternal life, 27 As well as those who should come after, who should believe in the gifts and callings of God by the Holy Ghost, which beareth record of the Father and of the Son; 28 Which Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are one God, infinite and eternal, without end. Galatians 4:6; “And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.”

One God 2.0It seems like a lifetime ago when I met with a friend for lunch and the hour I spent with her opened the door of a brand new world. Although at the time I didn’t understand why, I really enjoyed being in her presence. We both had husbands stationed at Nellis Air Base, and realized we had a lot of other things in common as well. On this particular day as we were chatting an overwhelming sense of peace and calmness washed over me, and I noticed whenever I was around her afterwards, the same thing happened! After I accepted the Lord I realized I had witnessed the effects of the Holy Spirit in the life of my friend who was a believer.

One God 2.0

This is part 2 of 3 in our One God of the Bible Series

In 1994 LDS prophet Howard Hunter, declared Mormon temples to be the symbol of a Mormon’s worship. It’s a clear indication there’s something drastically wrong here! Jesus told us we can’t serve two masters, so if they’re serving the temple and those inside the temple, they can’t be serving Jesus!

Matthew 6:24; “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”

Matthew 15:9; “But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.”

Today we’re asking how the Church uses this all important name. We’re looking at Mormon Doctrine, written by Bruce McConkie, once a leading authority in the LDS Church.

Mormon Doctrine Bruce McConkieMormon Doctrine, p. 343; “See CHRIST, VIRGIN BIRTH. Christ is Immanuel, Emmanuel the King Immanuel (D. & C. 128:22), signifying literally, God is with us. This designation used by Isaiah in a great Messianic prophecy (Isa. 7:14), bruce mcconkiealluded to by Micah as referring to the birth of our Lord (Mic. 5:3), and specifically named by Matthew as having reference to the Virgin Birth (Matt. 1:18-25), signifies that Christ as God would be born into mortality of a virgin and would be with men to save and redeem them.”

Note: the reference for the link above comes from the online version of Mormon Doctrine, p. 269. Gospelink, and other versions of Mormon Doctrine list ‘Immanuel’ on p. 343.

Symbolum Apostolorum (Apostle’s Creed)

Cross 3This creed arose from the earliest teachings of the apostles, but it’s not to be attributed to them directly. This creed dates back to the mid sixth century (circa 542 AD) and was used as a simple baptismal confession. There are several variations to this creed, but they’re all the same in essence and content.
