The Many gods of Mormonism

D&C 121:25-28; “For there is a time appointed for every man, according as his works shall be. 26 God shall give unto you knowledge by his Holy Spirit, yea, by the unspeakable gift of the Holy Ghost, that has not been revealed since the world was until now; 27 Which our forefathers have awaited with anxious expectation to be revealed in the last times, which their minds were pointed to by the angels, as held in reserve for the fulness of their glory; 28 A time to come in the which nothing shall be withheld, whether there be one God or many gods, they shall be manifest.”

Potential for Godhood Status

Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pg 347; “…the first principles of consolation…

What is it? To inherit the same power, the same glory and the same exaltation, until you arrive at the station of a God…the same as those who have gone before…My Father worked out his kingdom with fear and trembling…when I get my kingdom, I shall present it to my Father, so that he may obtain kingdom upon kingdom, and it will exalt him in glory. He will then take a higher exaltation, and I will take his place, and thereby become exalted myself.”

Lies Told by Mormon Leaders

The other day I received an LDS Gem via e-mail and I have to say that it got me moving quick. It’s not often I have that reaction, thus my response here. The topic for their daily gem was “exhort them to pray”.  I thought hey that’s pretty cool, let’s take a look!

Follow the Prophets

Conference Report, “Follow the Prophets”, Oct. 1981, pp. 90–91; “If we really do love God, then indeed we must and we will love and revere his anointed ones… Of his faithful servants the Lord has said: These are they who overcome by faith. Wherefore, all things are theirs and they are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s. These are they whose names are written in heaven, where God and Christ are the judge of all. These are they whose glory is that of the sun, even the glory of God, the highest of all.” – Mark Petersen

Adoration for Deity not Needed

The Best of Lowell L. Bennion, Selected Writings 1928-1988: pg. 79; Christ was as humane and man-centered as any humanist in his concern for persons, but he also loved God and shared with him his love for man.  And so my loyalty to persons includes man, every man, I hope, but also Deity—the Father and the Son. They too are persons. I don’t know that they need my direct adoration and affection, but it is my simple faith that they suffer when men suffer and rejoice when men have cause to rejoice. So in a modest way, but with all my heart, I would diminish their suffering and enhance their joy.

Why Build Temples?

Discourses of Wilford Woodruff, pg 147; “WHY BUILD TEMPLES. We are building temples to the name of the Lord. What are we building them for? That we may enter in and redeem the living and the dead.—JD 22:209, January 9, 1881.”

Bishops are the Judges of Your Worthiness

Young Women Manual 2, Appreciating the Bishop, p. 41; The bishop presides over every person in the ward and directs their local church activities. All of your adolescent life you will be under the direction of the bishop. He will appoint teachers and supervisors to do his work, but he will be very much interested in your progress. Your life here will be constantly weighed by him, for he is the judge of your worthiness … to receive higher ordinances, and to be worthy to go to the Temple.”

Heavenly Father’s Plan of Salvation for you

“Heavenly Father’s Plan – “Have you ever wondered why marriage is so important and why the family is central to Heavenly Father’s plan?” Elder Bednar asked. “A man and a woman are designed and intended to work together to progress eternally. That is part of the plan.””

Salvation; Evidence of

Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pg 297; “Salvation is nothing more nor less than to triumph over all our enemies and put them under our feet. And when we have power to put all enemies under our feet in this world, and a knowledge to triumph over all evil spirits in the world to come, then we are saved, as in the case of Jesus, who was to reign until He had put all enemies under His feet, and the last enemy was death.” http://www.lds.org/manual/teachings-joseph-smith/chapter-17?lang=eng

Millions of gods; Each Earth has Its Own god

Journal of Discourses 2:345-346; “This explains the mystery. If we should take a million of worlds like this and number their particles, we should find that there are more Gods than there are particles of matter in those worlds. But the attributes of Deity are one; and they constitute the one God that the Prophets speak of, and that the children of men in all worlds worship.

One world has a personal God or Father, and the inhabitants thereof worship the attributes of that God, another world has another, and they worship His attributes, and besides Him there is no other; and when they worship Him they are at the same time worshipping the same attributes that dwell in all the personal Gods who fill immensity”. – Orson Pratt, Salt Lake City, February 18, 1855

Gods; Countless gods on other earths

Journal of Discourses 7:333-334; “How many Gods there are, I do not know. But there never was a time when there were not Gods and worlds, and when men were not passing through the same ordeals that we are now passing through. That course has been from all eternity, and it is and will be to all eternity. You cannot comprehend this; but when you can, it will be to you a matter of great consolation.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, October 8, 1859

Council of gods

Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pg. 348; “I will transpose and simplify it in the English language. Oh, ye lawyers, ye doctors, and ye priests, who have persecuted me, I want to let you know that the Holy Ghost knows something as well as you do. The head God called together the Gods and sat in grand council to bring forth the world. The grand councilors sat at the head in yonder heavens and contemplated the creation of the worlds which were created at the time. When I say doctors and lawyers, I mean the doctors and lawyers of the Scriptures. I have done so hitherto without explanation, to let the lawyers flutter and everybody laugh at them. Some learned doctors might take a notion to say the Scriptures say thus and so; and we might believe the Scriptures; they are not to be altered. But I am going to show you an error in them.”

God Created You to Become a god

Discourses of Brigham Young, pg. 57; “The Lord created you and me for the purpose of becoming Gods like himself; when we have been proved in our present capacity, and have been faithful with all things he puts into our possession.”

1 Cor. 1:9; “God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Mormonism and the Washington Post

Today I received an e-mail from my good friend Ed Decker asking me to post a comment on the blog site for The Washington Post.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/on-faith/post/mormonisms-modern-day-problem/2012/01/22/gIQApCeiJQ_blog.html

In an article written by one of their reporters, Sally Quinn, she related a conversation she had with one of her friends she described as a “liberal atheist”. This conversation between the two of them was focused on why people who are religious are weird and why Smith’s religion is too new for anyone to believe it. I can appreciate their conversation because I used to think and feel the exact same way.

Salvation and Exaltation

We Follow Jesus Christ,” Ensign, May 2010, 86; “We rejoice in all the Savior has done for us. He has made it possible for each of us to gain our salvation and exaltation.” – Quentin L. Cook

Jude 1:24-25; “Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, 25 To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.”

Godhood

Why is the earth given to the righteous for an inheritance if the goal is to become a god with your own planet?  (D&C 45:58)

And the earth shall be given unto them for an inheritance; and they shall multiply and wax strong, and their children shall grow up without sin unto salvation.

Spirit of man sexually begotten by Heavenly Father

Latter-day Prophets Speak: Selections from the Sermons and Writings of Church Presidents, Book 5;There is not a person here today but what is a son or a daughter of that Being. In the spirit world their spirits were first begotten and brought forth, and they lived there with their parents for ages before they came here. This, perhaps, is hard for many to believe, but it is the greatest nonsense in the world not to believe it. If you do not believe it, cease to call Him Father; and when you pray, pray to some other character. -Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses 4:216, February 8, 1857

Book of Mormon and the Fullness of the Gospel

If the Book of Mormon contains the fullness of the Gospel as it says in D&C 27:5 & 135:3, then why doesn’t it teach the following LDS teachings?  Keep in mind these are only a handful of examples.

God Changes Not…or Does He?

Mormon 9:9-10; For do we not read that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and in him there is no variableness neither shadow of changing?  And now, if ye have imagined up unto yourselves a god who doth vary, and in whom there is shadow of changing, then have ye imagined up unto yourselves a god who is not a God of miracles.
