Quick thought on Mormons and Grace

Today on the Facebook page of Mormon.org their post reads:

“Mormons believe that through grace, the divine help and strength given through the mercy and love of Jesus Christ, all mankind will be resurrected. Through His grace, those who desire to change for the better and live according to His gospel will feel an enduring closeness to God in this life and live in His presence after this life. How have you felt the love of Jesus Christ in your life recently?”

Blood Atonement

Mormon Decisions 10Journal of Discourses 4:49-50; “Some have received the Priesthood and a knowledge of the things of God, and still they dishonor the cause of truth…I say, that there are men and women that I would advise to go to the President immediately, and ask him to appoint a committee to attend to their case; and then let a place be selected, and let that committee shed their blood. We have those amongst us that are full of all manner of abominations, those who need to have their blood shed, for water will not do, their sins are of too deep a dye.” – Jedidiah Morgan Grant, Salt Lake City, September 21, 1856

Matthew 7:1-3; “Judge not, that ye be not judged. 2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. 3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?”

Baptism Mandatory

salt lake mormon temple 2The Seer, pg 255 (1854); “Baptism is just as essential to salvation, as Faith and Repentance. — Without being immersed in water no man can enter into the fulness of Celestial glory… But who in this generation have authority to baptize?  Only the Latter-day Saints. Both Catholics and Protestants are nothing less than the “whore of Babylon.” – Orson Pratt

Forgiveness Dependent Upon Works

Articles of Faith, pg 99; “The first step toward the blessed state of forgiveness consists in the sinner confessing his sins; the second, in his forgiving others who have sinned against him; and the third in his showing his acceptance of Christ’s atoning sacrifice by complying with the divine requirements.” – James Talmage

Temple Worthiness Interview

The Holy Temple, Ensign, Oct. 2010; “In the temples, members of the Church who make themselves eligible can participate in the most exalted of the redeeming ordinances that have been revealed to mankind. There, in a sacred ceremony, an individual may be washed and anointed and instructed and endowed and sealed. And when we have received these blessings for ourselves, we may officiate for those who have died without having had the same opportunity. In the temples sacred ordinances are performed for the living and for the dead alike…

Thought of the Day about Mormonism and Gratitude or is it Gifts of the Holy Spirit?

Today I received an e-mail from the Church. A few years back I signed up to receive daily inspirational quotes from past and present LDS leaders and while they usually provide me with enough subject matters to witness to Mormons with, I thought I’d share this one with my readers.

There are times when we read the quotes of these leaders and have to wonder where they get their ideas from. Okay, okay I know it’s not the Lord, but I mean really, where do they get these ideas??? What is going on in those heads of theirs that opens their minds to some of this stuff?

Salvation by Grace

Ensign, November 1988, p. 65; “Man unquestionably has impressive powers… But after all our obedience and good works, we cannot be saved from the effects of our sins without the grace extended by the atonement of Jesus Christ… Man cannot earn his own salvation.” – Dallin H. Oaks, “What Think Ye of Christ?”

Necromancy

Journal of Discourses 19:229-230; “The dead will be after you, they will seek after you as they have after us in St. George. They called upon us, knowing that we held the keys and power to redeem them. I will here say, before closing, that two weeks before I left St. George, the spirits of the dead gathered around me, wanting to know why we did not redeem them.” – Wilford Woodruff

White Blood Mixed with Negro Blood Brings Death on the Spot

Journal of Discourses 10:110-111; “Shall I tell you the law of God in regard to the African race? If the white man who belongs to the chosen seed mixes his blood with the seed of Cain, the penalty, under the law of God, is death on the spot. This will always be so.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, March 8, 1863

Bible and Book of Mormon Authenticate Each Other

Ensign, Nov. 2007, 43; “Scriptural witnesses authenticate each other. This concept was explained long ago when a prophet wrote that the Book of Mormon was ‘written for the intent that ye may believe [the Bible]; and if ye believe [the Bible] ye will believe [the Book of Mormon] also’ (Mormon 7:9). Each book refers to the other. Each book stands as evidence that God lives and speaks to His children by revelation to His prophets.

Love for the Book of Mormon expands one’s love for the Bible and vice versa. Scriptures of the Restoration do not compete with the Bible; they complement the Bible. We are indebted to martyrs who gave their lives so that we could have the Bible. It establishes the everlasting nature of the gospel and of the plan of happiness. The Book of Mormon restores and underscores biblical doctrines such as tithing, the temple, the Sabbath day, and the priesthood.” – Russell M. Nelson, “Scriptural Witnesses”

Denying the Lord Jesus

While answering e-mails today I came across a passage of Mormon scripture in D&C 138:58-59 which says;

The dead who repent will be redeemed, through obedience to the ordinances of the house of God,  59 And after they have paid the penalty of their transgressions, and are washed clean, shall receive a reward according to their works, for they are heirs of salvation.

Five Reasons the Book of Mormon is Confusing

Especially for Missionaries, vol. 1; The purpose of the Book of Mormon is fivefold. First, it stands as a second testament or witness for Jesus Christ. Second, it authenticates the Bible. Third, it shows the goodness of God to his children. Fourth, it makes people aware of the promises that God has made to his children. And fifth, it restores to earth many plain and precious truths that have been lost since the fulness of the gospel existed.

Mormon Dilemma 13

Joseph Smith’s Polygamy Problem

In Sacred Loneliness, pg. 463; “In the year 1842 President Joseph Smith sought an interview with me, and said, ‘I have a message for you, I have been commanded of God to take another wife, and you are the woman.’ … He asked me if I believed him to be a Prophet of God. … He fully Explained to me the principle of plural or celestial marriage … that it would prove an everlasting blessing to my father’s house. … [Joseph encouraged her to pray] ‘that the grave would kindly receive me that I might find rest on the bosom of my dear [recently deceased] mother … Why Should I be chosen from among thy daughters, Father I am only a child in years and experience.’ And thus I prayed in the agony of my soul. … [The marriage] was not a love matter—at least on my part it was not, but simply the giving up of myself as a sacrifice to establish that grand and glorious principle that God had revealed to the world.

 This Generation Is Destroyed (1830)

Joseph Smith Testimony, 1:45; He commenced, and again related the very same things which he had done at his first visit, without the least variation; which having done, he informed me of great judgments which were coming upon the earth, with great desolations by famine, sword, and pestilence; and that these grievous judgments would come on the earth in this generation. Having related these things, he again ascended as he had done before.
