What seemed like a horror story from long ago, was lived out in real life this week. Think blood atonement…

Exodus 23:1; “Thou shalt not raise a false report: put not thine hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness.”
Today marks the not-so-shining moment in the history of the LDS Relief Society.
This is the 175th anniversary of a very notable letter the RS published in their newspaper, ‘Times and Seasons’ declaring they weren’t practicing polygamy.
What’s so remarkable about their public declaration is how they blatantly lied then, and how the Church continues to do so even today.
Originally, a public declaration by the RS was signed by no less than 19 women. They were trying to ward off rumors of the polygamy practices which were obviously detrimental to the Church because it was illegal.
About half of them were actually married to Joe Smith at the time.

Leviticus 18:18; “Neither shalt thou take a wife to her sister, to vex her, to uncover her nakedness, beside the other in her life time.”
Deuteronomy 17:17; “Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.”
The Lord obviously had a few things to say about polygamy, and the reasons why is long. A good synopsis of the results of such a messy lifestyle are now encapsulated in a new Canadian law penned by their Chief Justice Robert Bauman.
“…women in polygamous relationships are at an elevated risk of physical and psychological harm. They face higher rates of domestic violence and abuse, including sexual abuse… children in polygamous families face higher infant mortality. … They tend to suffer more emotional, behavioural and physical problems, and … lower educational achievement than children in monogamous families. … early marriage for girls, frequently to older men, is common.” – Chief Justice Robert Bauman, British Columbia
Today we want to bring attention to the news of our neighbors to the north. The polygamy situation in Bountiful, BC has been an ongoing saga for decades. And finally (!) we saw some justice roll forth, as little, and as late as it was..

The LDS Church has a few things in common with a rather obscure creature from the animal world; the chameleon.
The chameleon can change colors to blend in, and they’re usually solitary creatures unless they’re seen with a group of other female chameleons.

From the inception of Mormonism itself there’s been controversy. Joe Smith’s unconventional lifestyle was laden with numerous events the majority of people either never thought of before, or outright shunned.
Ignoring or shunning Smith always brought the same reaction; outrage. If you weren’t supportive of his antics, you were labeled a heretic, or an ‘anti’. Fast forward two hundred years, and the story is pretty much the same, with the exception of one thing. Many church members are now backing off the list of excuses for early Utah polygamy because of historical evidence. (more…)

A few days ago I came upon an interesting journal written by Levi Hancock’s son, Mosiah, which got me thinking about one of the essays published by the Church last year (Oct. 2014).
In this essay the Church came out with their own version of history on polygamy in Kirtland and Nauvoo that we found to be full of lies and half truths. Shocker, I know!
In my underwhelmed reaction to their essays in general, I’m wondering just what they were thinking by publishing something like this. Look, we all do things in life in order to get something out of it. For me personally, I have this ministry to see people come to the Lord, and we all do simple stuff like work to earn money, do laundry to have clean clothes, cook to have dinner, etc.

I’m sure you’re puzzled by the title of my article but please bear with me as I explain. Today I was watching a marathon of the past season of Sister Wives. I know, I don’t know how I can watch it either, but in my defense I have taken breaks from watching their show. The complete disregard for how God designed marriage gets to me, still I find it funny at times. I guess I’m easily amused. 🙂

While gathering info for our Polygamy and Mormon Church Leaders series I kept noticing a common occurrence in the lives of these men. The issue for this article isn’t about polygamy (that’s for another day), rather my focus is on the age of the girls these men married. I refer to them as girls because quite frankly that’s what they were; little girls, aka, children.
The last submission for our series included a young girl who was 13 years old when she married Perrigrine Sessions and each time I thought of that scenario I felt physically ill. Sadly, many of the genealogy sites I referenced contained comments from his descendants who remarked they were surprised that ‘girls were married so young back then’.

As most of our readers know, Melissa submits a small info page on the monthly LDS publication for the Visiting Teaching Messages. The intended audiences for these publications are the women in their Relief Society program and their purpose is to provide encouragement and directions for living a godly life while following Christ.
All that got me to wondering what female Mormons today think of those in the Relief Society back in the days of Emma Smith.

The new reality show Breaking The Faith follows a group of young FLDS women in their quest to break free from the confines of Fundamental Mormonism. I had a chance to catch the show’s premiere Sunday, and I have to say I’m looking forward to seeing more.

A few years ago Melissa wrote an article about Mormon women needing their husbands to be saved. In her look at the official Mormon doctrine on this subject she provided Mormon scriptural references to this damning doctrine and how it contradicts what our Lord has taught us in His word.

Today I received an incredibly cool e-mail from a researcher and writer based in Salt Lake City that I’ve admired for years now. Her reports have exposed the Church’s practice of posthumous baptisms for the dead even after the Church has publicly announced they’ve stopped.
Helen Radkey sent me a PDF version of her latest report on the inner workings of the Mormon Church’s polygamy endowments that are taking place inside Mormon temples even today.
