Romans 4:4 “Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.”

Mormon Doctrine, Grace, p. 241 “Grace is granted to men proportionately as they conform to the standards of personal righteousness that are part of the gospel plan. Thus the saints are commanded to “grow in grace” (D. & C. 50:40), until they are sanctified and justified, “though the grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” (D. & C. 20:30- 32.)

Grace is an attribute of perfection possessed by Deity (D. & C. 66:12; 84:102), and Christ himself “received grace for grace” until finally he gained the fulness of the Father. The same path to perfection is offered to man. “If you keep my commandments,” the Lord says, “you shall receive of his fulness, and be glorified in me as I am in the Father; therefore, I say unto you, you shall receive grace for grace.” (D. & C. 93:6-20.)” – Bruce McConkie (more…)

Why Mormons Can’t Celebrate Good Friday

Originally posted March 2013

I’m certain I’m not alone when I say that Good Friday always gives us lots to think upon and pray about! Each of us has our own list of reasons why we’re grateful God intervened in our life and we each carry our own set of memories why this day is special for us.

One of the most memorable experiences for me dates back to my days in Junior High School of all things. At the time I had become friends with a handful of other girls and as it turned out I was the only Mormon. My small group of friends included a Catholic, a Presbyterian, an Episcopalian and a Methodist. I began noticing my Catholic friend only ate fish on Fridays and while all the girls had their own set of doctrinal creeds they held dear, their customs afforded me a front row seat to other cultures right there in the heart of Utah Mormonism. I began wondering what it’d be like to attend a church that had a cross somewhere on the building.

Journal of Discourses 12:162; “We cannot now administer the further ordinances of God in the fullest sense of the word legally unto the people, neither shall we be able to do so until we have a temple built for that purpose. … We must be situated in local circumstances wherein we can efficiently administer in those ordinances of the house of God that cannot be administered to a people while they are scattered abroad among the nations of the wicked.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, February 16, 1868

Discussion 5 – Living a Christlike Life

There are four principles discussed with the investigator in this lesson they are:

The Two Great Commandments

Sacrifice Brings Blessings

Fasting and Fast Offerings

Tithing

Judging by the title of the discussion and the principles it teaches, I think we can safely say the lesson the investigators are left with is that you must do works and sacrifice to live a “Christlike’ life.

August 2 – Who lied; Jesus, Joseph, or Moroni? Luke 16:19-31; ‘There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;  And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.  Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.  And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.  And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.’

 Worshiping the Mormon Pioneers

Originally published 2011

2017 NEW & UPDATED!

I write this article with the intent of introducing the Mormon people to the idea of

Mormon Pioneers coming down through Echo Canyon, UT 1866

thinking about what, and/or whom they are worshiping. What I don’t want to do is send the message I’m here to bash, or ridicule the intent they hold in their hearts for Jesus.

Each year the state of Utah celebrates Pioneer Days in July, with the 24th of that month being the apex of their homage paid to the early Mormons who pushed, and pulled their handcarts and wagons from Nauvoo, Illinois to the Wasatch Front. Their second prophet Brigham Young, led the group of believers to their new home where they thought they could “live their religion” (aka polygamy) without being bothered by non-Mormons.

John 14:23 “Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.”

general-conference-october-2015 On January 19, 2017, an image on the front page of the LDS website caught my attention. For whatever reasons, they’ve been carrying not a few stories as of late, with a corresponding image that looks odd, for the lack of a better word.

The images seem like they’re trying to create an ethereal portrayal of Jesus, and/or God. This time around, it was Jesus.

The article that went along with the image above is our focus today. We’re pulled a few of the comments from Mr. Kim Clark’s General Conference speech to compare them with the Bible, and ask a question or two. Here we go!

To read the article in full see Ensign, ‘Eyes to See and Ears to Hear,’ General Conference, October 2015.
