greek-hebrew-and-aramaic-words-sanctification “Sanctification Through Missionary Service,” Ensign, November 1981; “The words have come into my mind…They invite us to come unto Christ and be perfected in Him. This is done by serving Him with all of our heart, might, mind, and strength. If we do this, we receive a remission of our sins and become holy and without spot and may return to our Heavenly Father to dwell again with Him, to live the kind of life He lives. The Savior stands with His hands extended, offering us glorious blessings if we will serve Him.” – William R. Bradford

John 14:23; “Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.”

holy-spirit Several days ago, the Church posted a video, ‘Mormon Message: Like a Broken Vessel’, where their apostle, Russell Ballard, spoke on the ‘epidemic’ of mental illness, and depression. The reason we’ve brought this up isn’t to delve into the discussion of what is, and isn’t sin, rather, it’s to point out the solution Mr. Ballard promised would work for this problem.

The 12 minute video is a compilation of several people sharing experiences they’ve had (including Mr. Ballard), and how the Church’s gospel offers the hope they were searching for to obtain peace. Mr. Ballard went so far as to say, “everything that was broken gets fixed. That’s the great promise of the gospel.”

ensign-2Conference Report, Afternoon Meeting, April, 1961, p. 119; “This Church is the standard which Isaiah said the Lord would set up for the people in the latter days. This Church was given to be a light to the world and to be a standard for God’s people and for the Gentiles to seek to. This Church is the ensign on the mountain spoken of by the Old Testament prophets. It is the way, the truth, and the life.” – Marion Romney

Mormon Terminology2February 1840 Discourse, Washington, DC

Encyclopedia of Joseph Smith’s Teachings, p. 237; “Fall of Adam and Eve. I believe in the fall of man, as recorded in the Bible; I believe that God foreknew everything, but did not foreordain everything; I deny that foreordain and foreknow is the same thing. He foreordained the fall of man; but all merciful as He is, He foreordained at the same time, a plan of redemption for all mankind. (Joseph Smith, History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 7 Vols. 4:78)” – edited by Larry E. Dahl and Donald Q. Cannon [Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1997], also see same entry for this on p. 270

History of the Church, 2:52; “Take away the Book of Mormon and the revelations, and where is our religion? We have none.” – April 21, 1834

The quote above has always startled me, and left me wondering what if anything might a Mormon of today’s day and age be able to hold onto if the BoM was stripped from them. The following definitions give a dismal, if not downright dark, outlook for Mormons if this were to happen.

Take a look at the following definitions of the word ‘Mormon’ and you decide…

Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 300Mormon Terminology; “I may safely say that the word Mormon stands independent of the learning and wisdom of this generation.6 —Before I give a definition, however, to the word, let me say that the Bible in its widest sense, means good; for the Savior says according to the gospel of John, “I am the good shepherd;”7 and it will not be beyond the common use of terms, to say that good is among the most important in use, and though known by various names in different languages, still its meaning is the same, and is ever in opposition to “bad.” We say from the Saxon, “good”; the Dane, “god”; the Goth, “goda”; the German, “gut”; the Dutch, “goed”; the Latin, “bonus”; the Greek, “kalos”; the Hebrew, “tob”; and the Egyptian, “mon.” Hence, with the addition of “more,” or the contraction, “mor,” we have the word “mormon”; which means, literally, “more good.” Yours, JOSEPH SMITH. (May 15, 1843.) T&S 4:194.”” – May 15, 1843

Mormon TerminologyEnsign, “Valiant in the Testimony of Jesus,” May 1982 [April Conference issue], 62; “To possess a testimony of Jesus is to know that He voluntarily took upon Himself the sins of all mankind in the Garden of Gethsemane, which caused Him to suffer in both body and spirit and to bleed from every pore. All this He did so that we would not have to suffer if we would repent. (See D&C 19:16, 18.)” – Ezra Taft Benson

Mormon TerminologyCan you name the key differences between Mormonism and Christianity regarding man’s sin nature? If not, don’t feel too bad yet, because you’re not alone! Many Christians are unaware of what they are, due in part to the elusive nature of the terminology Mormons use to hide the truth.

Child of God

Mormon TerminologyGeneral Conference, ‘I Am a Child of God,’ Saturday Morning, April 2, 2016; “… A correct understanding of our heavenly heritage is essential to exaltation. It is foundational to comprehending the glorious plan of salvation and to nurturing faith in the firstborn of the Father, Jesus the Christ, and in His merciful Atonement. Further, it provides continual motivation for us to make and keep our indispensable eternal covenants. …” –Donald L. Hallstrom

Mormon Terminology “What is Truth?” CES Broadcast, January 2013; “Yes, we do have the fulness of the everlasting gospel, but that does not mean that we know everything. In fact, one principle of the restored gospel is our belief that God ‘will yet reveal many great and important things.’” —Dieter F. Uchtdorf

Mormon TerminologyTeachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 305; “The punishment of the devil was that he should not have a habitation like men. The devil’s retaliation is, he comes into this world, binds up men’s bodies, and occupies them himself. When the authorities come along, they eject him from a stolen habitation.”

Atonement

“What is the Atonement?

As used in the scriptures, to atone is to suffer the penalty for sins, thereby removing the effects of sin from the repentant sinner and allowing him or her to be reconciled to God. Jesus Christ was the only one capable of carrying out the Atonement for all mankind. Because of his Atonement, all people will be resurrected, and those who obey His gospel will receive the gift of eternal life with God.”

Creation

The book of Moses in the Pearl of Great Price is the account of the creation.  Moses 2:1-31 is much like the account of the creation as told in the Bible.  Now if we skip over to Abraham chapters 4 and 5 in the Pearl of Great Price we see an entirely different story of the creation.  Here it tells the Mormon that the ‘Gods’ created the earth and then created man.  This is just one example of how the Mormons became confused.

Salvation

In Mormonism there is a general or “unconditional salvation” of all people because God gives “grace alone without obedience to gospel law”.  After this general salvation comes the placement of souls.  Heaven is comprised of three distinct levels and you earn your way into the various levels by the amount or type of work you’ve done here on earth.  These levels are; the Celestial Kingdom, Terrestrial Kingdom and the lowest level of the Telestial Kingdom.  To the Mormon you aren’t truly ‘saved’ unless you enter into what they call the Celestial Kingdom and have become a god.

Jesus

“We affirm, on the authority of Holy Scripture, that the Being who is known among men as Jesus of Nazareth, and by all who acknowledge His Godhood as Jesus the Christ, existed with the Father prior to birth in the flesh; and that in the preexistent state He was chosen and ordained to be the one and only Savior and Redeemer of the human race.” Jesus the Christ, pg. 6 by James E. Talmage.
