Was Mankind Born Perfect or Sinful?
If you’ve ever been a Mormon there was probably a time in your life when your sacred canon caused you some confusion. I’ve spoken to countless people both active and ex-Mormon who have experienced just this thing.
For me it was the day I was baptized at the age of eight. I was being baptized for the remission of sins, but up until that time I had been taught I was born perfect and couldn’t sin.
Their contradictory teaching on this subject is worth exploring and worthy of asking the Mormon in your life what they think of this.

Ensign, November 2008, pg. 57; “”[The] testing of our limits in priesthood service is made necessary by God’s plan to qualify His children to live with Him again forever. Heavenly Father loves His children…To qualify us to receive that gift, He gave us a mortal body, the opportunity to be tempted to sin, and a way to be cleansed from that sin and to rise in the First Resurrection. Atonement for Sin
This is what breaks our hearts here at the ministry. One character marker we see time and again with the Mormon people is anger. Dr. Walter Martin once said that the lies piled upon the soul of the Mormon people cause frustration and anger. They’re usually argumentative and have been trained to provoke the anger in you to take away their guilt. This gives them a reason to verbally attack.
Pray for them.
The following example taken from Doctrines of Salvation is a good example of how the Church confuses its members and obviously causes quite the dilemma.

As I was reading through a discussion board dedicated to Mormonism today I ran across a thread started by a Mormon on the topic of morals. This individual gave glowing comments about the youth in his church, attributing their obedience to the Mormon gospel to be what makes them so unique when compared to their non-member peers. His assertion is nothing new, in Mormonism someone’s goodness or lack thereof is always measured by how closely they seem to be following the Mormon gospel. Keeping yourself “morally clean” is a huge thing in the Mormon Church especially for the youth.

In my daily LDS Gems e-mails I received notice today (February 26, 2008) of another new website launched by the Church. Here in part is what it said;

We received an e-mail from a member of the LDS Church who felt compelled to reply to our online newsletter he received last week. I thought it was important to share this with our readers for two reasons. First, to show the mindset of the Mormon and secondly, to ask the Mormon some serious questions.

THE ATONEMENT
Answers to Gospel Questions 4:17; “To many, like the writer, such a custom is repugnant and contrary to the true worship of our Redeemer. Why should we bow down before a cross or use it as a symbol? Because our Savior died on the cross, the wearing of crosses is to most Latter-day Saints in very poor taste and inconsistent to our worship.”
For many of us there has been a time or two in life when we knew things were about to change. This happened to me several years ago as I sat listening to a pastor challenge his audience about their personal knowledge of Jesus Christ. Life as I knew it up to that point was radically different than what I was about to embark upon!

He alone is the One who saves; He alone is the Only Begotten Son. To Him is all the glory! My prayer is for the Mormon to know how precious this passage is to me and all of us who call Him Lord and God. There’s not one Mormon who believes in the Trinity so ask them what they think about the opening page of the Book of Mormon. Then think about this for a moment and ask yourself; haven’t we all been the woman in John chapter eight; and being so, where would we be if the Mormon Church was right?

Accordingly, how could he have forgiven the woman in her deep sin? When she had had time to repent; when she had abandoned her evil ways and evil associates; when she had made restitution so far as she could; and when she had proved by her works and the living of the commandments that she was “born again” and was a new creature-when she had done these things the forgiveness of the Savior could overshadow her and claim her and give her peace.” Spencer W. December 26 – 1 Corinthians 1:18; “For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.”

This verse has always been my call to arms so to speak. The Mormon cannot stand talking about the cross so the more I engage them in conversation, the more I bring up the subject of the cross. I like to show them this verse and then 1 Cor. 15:1-5; they soon see they are without excuse and besides once again, it gives them something to think about.
If you’re a Christian you worship a God not confined to a man made grave. You worship a God who raised His dead Son and brought Him back to life.
There are so many biblical references to sacrifices needing to be made for man’s sin and each of them are a foreshadowing of what was to come through God’s own sacrifice of His Son. Why would the Garden of Gethsemane qualify? And where in scripture can we see that the Garden of Gethsemane would fulfill the sacrifice God demanded for righteousness? These are the questions I would ask the Mormon.

As is usually the case, I came across something interesting in the Book of Mormon while looking for something else. This time I was reminded of what the Nephites thought of Jesus and His skin color in 3 Nephi 19:30;
“And when Jesus had spoken these words he came again unto his disciples; and behold they did pray steadfastly, without ceasing, unto him; and he did smile upon them again; and behold they were white, even as Jesus.”
