Interesting facts of 3-in-1 Part 1

3-in-1 Introductory page of the Book of Mormon says; “Jesus is the Christ, the Eternal God”

  The LDS Church does not believe in the Trinity.  In the book Articles of Faith, pg, 40-1, it states; “Unity of the Godhead….this cannot rationally be construed to mean that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost are one in substance and in person, nor that the names represent the same individual under different aspects.”

 There are two more items of interest just in this one sentence on their introductory page.

 1-What is the meaning of eternal?

2-They only believe that Jesus has earned the right to become a god because of his good works here on earth.  This statement does not mean that Jesus is our God, just that he is a god.

burning in the bosom 2This article came about because of an e-mail I received last month (November 2008).  Someone wrote in to comment about another article I wrote called “Mormon Lifestyles”.

     The person who wrote in kept telling me they “feel” that my article wasn’t telling the whole truth.  That part of his e-mail led into the subject we’re discussing now; feelings.

     The LDS Church has taught and continues to teach it is important to rely upon your feelings to know if something is from God or if it’s not from God.  They get this from Doctrine and Covenants 9:7-9.  We want to know – is this really biblical?  It is from verse eight they get the phrase “burning in the bosom” so let’s look at this in context.

 “Behold, you have not understood; you have supposed that I would give it unto you, when you took no thought save it was to ask me. 8 But, behold, I say unto you, that you must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall feel that it is right. 9 But if it be not right you shall have no such feelings, but you shall have a stupor of thought that shall cause you to forget the thing which is wrong; therefore, you cannot write that which is sacred save it be given you from me.”

      The above passage is part of a supposed revelation from God to Joseph Smith meant for Oliver Cowdery.  In Latter-day Prophets and the Doctrine and Covenants 1:85 it tells us that Cowdery didn’t have sufficient faith to translate the symbols with the Urim and Thummim, thus the chastisement from the Lord.

     The “commentary” on this part of Doctrine and Covenants goes into detail describing how Cowdery didn’t know his place as being a scribe and should seek out God by paying attention to the feelings in his heart.  But what of our passage mentioned above?  Are we really expected to “study it out in our minds” and then wait for a “burning in the bosom”?  If this is really the case then certainly we can find evidence of such an important subject in the Bible, right?

     Oswald Chambers once talked about “taking possession of our own soul”.  His message was taken from Luke 21:19.  He was describing the new life we live when we first get saved and as time goes by slipping back into our old selves again.  The one thing that caught my attention was when he said we shouldn’t always be blaming Satan for circumstances around us as they are usually a result of actions we take because of our moods.  Here’s an excerpt from that sermon;

 “There are certain things in life that we need not pray about—moods, for instance. We will never get rid of moodiness by praying, but we will by kicking it out of our lives. Moods nearly always are rooted in some physical circumstance, not in our true inner self.

         So are the “feel good feelings” from reading the Book of Mormon because it’s true, or because as my mother pointed out one day it reminds her of grandpa?  I am led to believe it’s the latter; and this of course is spiritual suicide.

     In addition to this passage the Mormon missionaries will also tell you to pray about Moroni 10:4-6;

 “And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.5 And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.6 And whatsoever thing is good is just and true; wherefore, nothing that is good denieth the Christ, but acknowledgeth that he is.”

     Again, how can we trust our own heart?  What if we’re just not in the mood to go to church and worship God or do good things for those around us?  What if the feeling for being obnoxious was strong in our hearts?  These two examples are ways of denying Christ so how can you be sure of what to do without the word of God who has already established what is holy and righteous?  Proverbs 28:26 says;

“He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.”

      We must distinguish nice memories in our childhood from truth and sadly enough the truth is that grandpa wasn’t leading his family into the arms of Jesus Christ.  For this topic the four key words to look at in this verse would be “trusteth”, “heart”, “fool” and “wisely”.

 “Trusteth” in the Hebrew is “baòtÖach” (pronounced baw-takh’) means to “hie for refuge”.

(Isn’t it just like our Lord to place this particular word here to firmly remind us that our refuge is found in His word and absolutes?)

The Hebrew word for fool is “kesŒòyl” (pronounced kes-eel).  It means stupid or silly.

The word for heart is “leòb” (pronounced labe). It can literally mean your physical heart or in this case, your mind or intellect.

The last word is wisely.  The Hebrew word is “chokmaòh” (pronounced khok-maw’).  In the English this means wisdom or wit.

       So this verse means “those who takes refuge in his own mind/intellect is stupid or silly, but those who follow with wisdom will be saved”.  Imagine; it has nothing to do with your mood, a feeling or a physical sensation!

     What if the burning in the bosom is a result of hanging out with friends who are supportive when you’re following their agenda?  Dr. Walter Martin once said; “Don’t explain Christianity by experiential reasoning but through demonstrative explanation”.  I can personally vouch that goose-bump moments come and go with the wind; God’s truth stands forever.

     You can read more of my “proof” on this subject in my own testimony.  It stands as a clear example that our behaviors can and do change.  In April of 1984 I actually spat on Ed Decker.  Besides being very unladylike, not to mention gross, God still performs miracles.  I hadn’t been active in the Church for two years at the point I made a lame attempt at defending Mormonism and I didn’t even agree with half of what they taught by that time.  I couldn’t articulate why I didn’t agree with it; I just knew something was wrong and I wasn’t looking forward to being eternally pregnant.  For thirty years the “burning in the bosom” fueled my behavior in defending a lie.

 Christians live out their faith based on what is known, not by what they feel is right.

 Here is an excerpt from my response to the person who e-mailed us.

 “We make a confession of faith based on the fact that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who came here to die for our sins and then was resurrected on the third day so that we may have eternal life.  People aren’t given a “general salvation” because He died.  Those who believe are seen as pure and clean because of His death and our subsequent individual commitment made on decisions, not feelings.

Faith is different from feelings.  Faith is based upon what you know to be true.  The old adage of knowing the chair is going to withstand your weight when you sit in it is a classic example of faith.  Feelings change from day to day because of human emotions and cannot, nor should they, be trusted.”

     A few questions for members of the LDS Church:

If you trust the burning in the bosom theory how do you feel about polygamy today?

How are you going to feel about it when/if you are in heaven?

How’s your spouse going to feel about it?

How do you feel knowing Joseph Smith wouldn’t be receiving a temple recommend if he was alive today?

What about blacks?

Should they be in the Church?

How do you feel with a black president?

    You see, the “feeling good” standard has no standing in God’s righteous holy ways.  God is unchanging.  Now the Church members all say the same thing; “Oh the “anti’s” all beat on the same topics all the time, they can’t come up with anything new…”  The reason we “anti’s” do this is because God hasn’t changed.  His plans haven’t changed, His righteous ways haven’t changed, but mankind has changed.

 Where in the Bible does God condone polygamy?

Where in the Bible does God condemn the black race?

Where in the Bible did God say it was okay to murder babies?

Abortion is murder so why is it acceptable in this world and even in Mormonism?

 Ensign, November 1998, pg. 71; Abortion is an ugly thing, a debasing thing, a thing which inevitably brings remorse and sorrow and regret…While we denounce it, we make allowance in such circumstances as when pregnancy is the result of incest or rape, when the life or health of the mother is judged by competent medical authority to be in serious jeopardy, or when the fetus is known by competent medical authority to have serious defects that will not allow the baby to survive beyond birth.

     If by this standard I had followed the counsel of doctors and the leaders in my church (LDS), my kids wouldn’t be here.  In the summer of 1990 military doctors told me to abort my oldest daughter Jacqui, she’s seventeen years old now.  They were convinced they couldn’t find a steady heartbeat for two appointments in a row.  They felt that something could be wrong with her future health.  Jacqui was born with her father’s engineering mind, graduates from high school this year and is planning on attending college in Germany to become a missionary for troubled teens.  She is working towards her pilot’s license, plays violin and the guitar.  She started a Bible study at the public school she attends after years of it being non-existent.  I cannot imagine my life without her presence each day and aside from an occasional cold, she’s in perfect health.

     Axi, my sixteen year old would also be dead.  She gets straight A’s, sings in choir at school, sings and plays piano for the youth group at church, attends Bible studies and is a source of joy every day of my life.  Her crime?  In 1992 Axi was born with a cleft lip and palate and a slight heart murmur.  The doctors told me it’d be understandable if I chose to abort and would arrange for my wishes to be carried through.  Because a test for Lyme disease came back with a false positive they were convinced she’d have horrible birth defects and serious problems.

     God tells us in Exodus 20:13 “Thou shalt not kill”; this of course is the sixth commandment!  By the way, the Lyme disease test showed a false positive because I have Multiple Sclerosis.

What if I had felt it’d be too much for me to bear?

What about Axi?

What about God?

     God knows and understands the daily emotional mountains we face each day, that’s why He gave us His word.  Psalm 119:105 says; “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”  (The first verse Jacqui memorized.)  His promises are meant to be a constant source of comfort to us when life presents us with new emotions or questions.  The Bible isn’t just a source of mistranslated old works.  God has given you a gift and the Mormon Church has tricked you into believing it’s a mistake!

     You must test the Mormon “scripture” and see if it lines up with what God says in the Bible.  If it doesn’t then you must walk away, as difficult as that may be and usually is, God will give you peace that passes understanding; I’m living proof!  Phil. 4:7.

     Now even more important than our mortal life is the eternal life that’s at stake when we place our trust in our own heart.  While murder is obviously a horrible sin it pales in comparison to living outside of God’s presence for eternity just because you trusted in your own feelings.

     If you’re LDS please know that we’re praying for you and know also that you’re not alone!

With Love in Christ;

Michelle …

December 10 – 1 Peter 2:6; “Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.”

_____

Our Lord is so good to us!  Here He promises that we shall never be confounded when we believe in Him.  The Greek word for confounded is kataischunoô.  It means to shame down, dishonored or disgraced.  Now the Mormon teachings say that if you ever speak against the Church you will be confounded.  I don’t know of anyone yet who this has happened to, myself included.

Nephi & Jacob

     In the first part of this study we looked at the reign of Lehi and his son Nephi.  This time we’ll look a little longer at Nephi and then switch over to studying the works and wanderings of his younger brother Jacob who was born in the years of Lehi’s journeys.

     The more I read the Book of Mormon, the more fallacies I see throughout its text.  For the second part of this short study I had originally planned to go straight to the legacy of Nephi’s younger brother Jacob.  However, after thumbing through the text of Second Nephi to convince myself to skip it, I became convicted it needs attention.

     When I go out to speak to youth groups in churches I typically begin my lecture by reading Isaiah 40:8 and then having the students repeat the verse after me.

Isaiah 40:8; “The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.”

     The one thing above all else I want those kids to remember is that one verse.  If they don’t remember anything that I taught them about Mormons, my goal is to have them memorize Isaiah 40:8.  Sure, I personally feel that it’s important everyone know the dangers of Mormonism.  However, as a Christian I am indebted to God that I teach on the infallibility of His word and His unchangeable ways.  Next year, or maybe in the next century there may not be any Mormonism, but rest assured there will certainly be another “ism” of some kind.

     When we as the body of Christ allow ourselves to slide into an existence of spiritual complacency we will also begin to rearrange and change the meaning of the word of God.  It’s our duty to teach the next generation of His ways else we are held responsible.  It’s also imperative that we “hold fast to that which is good” and remember the Apostle Peter’s exhortation from his second letter to the Jewish believers in Christ:

2 Peter 1:20-21; “Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.  For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

     With all that in mind let’s open the Book of Mormon to 2 Nephi 1:1 and take a good hard look at what Joseph Smith had to say.  This man is someone to take seriously and I mean that with every fiber of my being.  If we are to ignore or simply brush off someone like this then we endanger not only our eternal lives with God but the whole as well.  The following is what Joseph claims was on the plates of brass hidden in the hills of Cumorah.

     In the beginning stages of this book we see that Nephi is praising the Lord that he and his family have made it safely to the Promised Land.  In 1:4 he says something that I find truly amazing.  It says; “For, behold, said he, I have seen a vision, in which I know that Jerusalem is destroyed; and had we remained in Jerusalem we should also have perished.”

     The reason this is fascinating is because of what we studied earlier – the reality of what happened to the Jews who did flee to Egypt.  The majority did indeed perish because of their disobedience.  God had issued His commandment through the prophet Jeremiah in chapter 42 verses 7 through 22.  There were only a few that went back to Jerusalem and they were the poorest of the poor Israelites.  None of them had the money that Lehi had.

And why did Lehi need money if he was going to a place that didn’t have anyone else there, let alone someone who would consent to his form of money and goods?

     What is even more fascinating is what Lehi says in verse five;

But, said he, notwithstanding our afflictions, we have obtained a land of promise, a land which is choice above all other lands; a land which the Lord God hath covenanted with me should be a land for the inheritance of my seed. Yea, the Lord hath covenanted this land unto me, and to my children forever, and also all those who should be led out of other countries by the hand of the Lord.”

     Because they aren’t in Jerusalem anymore, this has to mean that God has changed His mind again or He has lied to all the Israelites, not to mention the rest of the world.  After more than 400 years of captivity and another 40 years wandering in the wilderness, God led His chosen people to the choicest of lands in Canaan.  He gave that land to them as their inheritance for their children’s children.  I dare any Mormon to go tell a Jew that God says the new land of His children is in Mesoamerica and see what kind of reaction you get.

     I don’t mean any disrespect at all to the Jewish community, please understand.  I am good friends with many Messianic Jews and practicing Orthodox Jews and wouldn’t dream of such a thing.  I personally feel that it’s insulting to God’s chosen people!  This is just one example of why the story that Joseph Smith concocted is a lie.

     As we go further into this study, we see that Lehi is teaching his son Jacob something that is diametrically opposed to LDS theology.  In 2 Nephi 2:21 it says;

“…For he gave commandment that all men must repent; for he showed unto all men that they were lost, because of the transgression of their parents.”

     According to LDS doctrine this is what it says in the Second Article of Faith:

We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam’s transgression.

     So if you’re witnessing to a Mormon or if you are LDS I truly pray that you would see things like this and ask God to clear the mind of the Mormon.  God loves the Mormon people, of this I am sure!  The heart of the average Mormon loves Jesus, but it’s death to the soul because it’s the wrong Jesus.  The two examples I’ve just listed above are simple and straightforward.  You don’t have to hold a PhD in anything to understand those two things are contradictory to each other.  And to further confuse the Mormon here is what it says just four verses later in 2 Nephi 2:25;

Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy.

     Of course we know this is a lie because of what the Lord tells us in Gen. 1:27-28 and 2:24-5;

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.  And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

     And then we see that it isn’t until Genesis chapter three when Adam and Eve have sinned.  God had sanctioned for the couple to become one flesh and multiply before they had been booted out of the Garden of Eden.  The above LDS doctrine is nothing but a hoax and made something that was created by God Himself into something that could only happen if we’re sinning!

If procreating could only take place while man was in a state of sin, why is it that salvation for the LDS comes only through the new and everlasting covenant of eternal marriage and having babies?

     As we dig still deeper into the cavern of lies, Joseph has revealed to people what was to become of the “Jaredites”.  Beginning in chapter five we’re told that righteous Nephi took a few of his siblings and in-laws with him to escape to the wilderness.  Never mind that God had promised him that particular spot of land forever if he was righteous, he has now packed up his things and they’re leaving.

     This chapter is when the people are separated into the two major people groups that being the Nephites and the dark and loathsome Lamanites.  Nephi’s brothers that continually railed against him were stricken with a “sore cursing” which turned their skin dark.  In addition to this development Nephi was also crowned as king against his own wishes.  2 Nephi 5:18, 21-24;

And it came to pass that they would that I should be their king. But I, Nephi, was desirous that they should have no king; nevertheless, I did for them according to that which was in my power.

And he had caused the cursing to come upon them, yea, even a sore cursing, because of their iniquity. For behold, they had hardened their hearts against him, that they had become like unto a flint; wherefore, as they were white, and exceedingly fair and delightsome, that they might not be enticing unto my people the Lord God did cause a skin of blackness to come upon them.  And thus saith the Lord God: I will cause that they shall be loathsome unto thy people, save they shall repent of their iniquities.  And cursed shall be the seed of him that mixeth with their seed; for they shall be cursed even with the same cursing. And the Lord spake it, and it was done.  And because of their cursing which was upon them they did become an idle people, full of mischief and subtlety, and did seek in the wilderness for beasts of prey.

     My list of questions and thoughts over the years about this particular passage is extensive as I’m sure the reader’s is as well.  However, I am mostly compelled to ask just one question for now:

Where in the span of the thirty years since they left Israel did the Nephites turn white?

    Generally speaking people from the Middle East aren’t white and delightsome.  Let me rephrase that, they’re usually not white.  And generally speaking from first hand experience, people who aren’t white and delightsome usually aren’t loathsome.  I’ve always been a hard worker, polite and giving to others.  The dictionary says the definition of loathsome is offensive, repellent, detestable, abhorrent and abominable.   I’ve known people much whiter than myself who could use a good scrub brush.  The inference of such remarks is nothing less than racist.  And I really don’t think making excuses for Joseph Smith being raised in the era of slavery is a good enough excuse in God’s eyes for clinging to that character flaw.

     Many times I’ll receive phone calls and/or e-mails chastising me for not understanding the social and political climate of the nineteenth century.  Actually I do understand it; it’s still alive and well in many places throughout the world.  Utah comes to mind pretty fast for me.  When people try to cover for Smith, I introduce them to my husband Kirk.  During the Civil War one of his ancestors took his wife and kids and fled for the north because he knew slavery wasn’t proper.  After settling in and changing his surname he fought for the north.  Don’t tell me Smith did it because he was from the “old school”.  Sin is sin.  It’s without excuse.

     Moving along, we come upon another direct contradictory teaching within the doctrines of the LDS Church.  You see, I can’t stress enough to those who are investigating the Church for membership that it is vital you check these things out!  The Church has 124 operating temples on the day of this writing, April 27, 2007 –

http://www.ldschurchtemples.com/operating  There are also six more under construction and another five that have been announced.  My question is:

Why?

2 Nephi 9:38 says; “And, in fine, wo unto all those who die in their sins; for they shall return to God, and behold his face, and remain in their sins.”

     Why would you need temples if Nephi is exhorting his brothers to be righteous before they die so they can receive salvation?  Also read 2 Nephi 9:15-16 which says the same thing!

Does this mean the Book of Mormon has been mistranslated?

Which book is correct – D&C or Book of Mormon?

     More importantly why do the Mormons go to the temples to be baptized for the dead if there are no second chances?  D&C 124:29-30 says that the saints have to baptize their dead.  If the saints have to do this but not the people before Jesus’ time then why didn’t God just say that to Nephi?

 For the following ten chapters you will notice that Nephi has written down the words of Isaiah.  Why Joseph Smith thought this would fit in with the agenda of LDS doctrine is beyond me, but it is what it is.  In Chapter 19:6 he has quoted verbatim what is in Isaiah 9:6;

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name shall be called, Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

  Isaiah 9:6;

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

     Here is where I think the LDS member should look very closely.  In our last look at the life of Nephi we read about Jesus telling the disciples that the Father would send them the Comforter in John 14:16-17.  Now take a good look at all the names given to that one “being” in Isaiah. This is obviously the Trinity, plain and simple.  Now why would Joseph Smith use a scripture out of Isaiah if he didn’t ascribe to the traditional Judeo-Christian view of that particular verse?  The answer is very simple my friends; to deceive.  The report from Nephi telling the people that God is coming in the flesh can also be seen in  2 Ne. 25:12-13.

     Those of us who have witnessed to the Mormon people will tell you that 2 Nephi 25:23 is one of the most contradictory statements in all of the Book of Mormon.  It says;

For we labor diligently to write, to persuade our children, and also our brethren, to believe in Christ, and to be reconciled to God; for we know that it is by grace that we are saved; after all we can do.

     When we read the words of Paul in Ephesians 2:8-9 we are comforted by his words about salvation and reminded of our blessings from the release of the Law;

 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

     In the LDS doctrine listed above, the last part of the sentence is in bold type to point out the discrepancy between it and what the Bible says.  I implore the members of the Church to analyze that doctrine.  What does it mean to you?  Why does grace play a part in your salvation if you have any part in it?  It’d be like having to invite you to your own birthday party!  Grace is unmerited favor.  We receive grace even though we’re not worthy of grace or salvation for that matter but God in His mercy and love for us grants us that unearned favor.  It’s like a get out of jail free card!

     In 2 Nephi 26:32-33 Nephi is giving his people a list of commandments they are to obey.  Interestingly enough one of those commandments is to not murder because as he states, it is never from God.  Nephi said that God is plain in his commandments and easy to understand.

Why did God tell Nephi to kill Laban but give a commandment at a later time to say that it is a sin and you will die for it?

     The Bible is very clear about lies and God’s faithfulness.  In Malachi 3:6 it says that God doesn’t change; and in Titus 1:2 it says God cannot lie.  My last issue with this chapter has to do with the very last sentence.  It says;

…and he denieth none that come unto him, black and white, bond and free, male and female…

      While that in and of itself sounds great and lines up with the Bible, what about chapter five of this second book of Nephi?  Smith just got done telling us the Lamanites were cursed.  How are they able to approach the throne of God with a clear conscience if they’re cursed?

     In 2 Nephi 30:6 we see one of the grammatical changes that have been made to the Book of Mormon.  In all there have been over 4,000 grammatical changes made.  Here is the 1980 and later version of this verse:

And then shall they rejoice; for they shall know that it is a blessing unto them from the hand of God; and their scales of darkness shall begin to fall from their eyes; and many generations shall not pass away among them, save they shall be a pure and delightsome people.

     In sharp contrast here is what it says prior to the change in 1980;

And then shall they rejoice; for they shall know that it is a blessing unto them from the hand of God; and their scales of darkness shall begin to fall from their eyes; and many generations shall not pass away among them, save they shall be a white and delightsome people.

     Since we’ve already discussed the color issue let’s forego that part of it and focus on what the Bible says in regards to this type of thing.  In Deut. 18:20-22 God tells the Israelites that in order to trust a prophet there is a test the prophet must pass.  If that prophet gives even one prophecy that doesn’t come true you are to ignore him because he will die and he has not spoken for God.

     Now from the example above:

Since when does the word white also mean pure?

If the Lamanites were supposed to believe in Christ then why are there still dark Native Americans?

     One chapter later we have Nephi preaching the gospel; keep in mind Jesus hasn’t been born yet let alone crucified and resurrected – that’s another five and a half centuries away!  The Greek words are also of interest considering Jacob and Nephi were living on a different continent, separated by an ocean, and they weren’t speaking Greek or Hebrew.  Joseph claims they had been speaking “Reformed Egyptian” (which to this day has never been authenticated by any reputable outside Egyptologist.).

Why were words such as baptized, baptism and Holy Ghost used some 550 years before it actually occurred?

Why did Nephi say virtually the same thing that Luke did in Acts 4:10 almost 600 years before Luke was born?

2 Nephi 31:21; “And now, behold, my beloved brethren, this is the way; and there is none other way nor name given under heaven whereby man can be saved in the kingdom of God. And now, behold, this is the doctrine of Christ, and the only and true doctrine of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, which is one God, without end. Amen.

Acts 4:12; “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”

And finally my dear friends from 2 Nephi 31:10 and 33:4;

How did Nephi know the name of Jesus before He was born?

Please know that if you’re a member of the LDS Church we are here not to bash you or any of the Mormon people.  Our hearts go out to you and we pray you will be set free from the confusion and lies of the doctrines of Joseph Smith.  We are convinced the Mormon people love Jesus and fear for them because this is truly not the Jesus of the Bible.  If you’d like more information you can contact us at Life After Ministries

November 19 – Ephesians 4:5; “One Lord, one faith, one baptism.”

_____

The scripture above is just one example of how many times we need to be baptized.  Paul actually admonishes the new believers in Corinth to stop practicing the pagan ritual of baptisms for the dead in his first epistle to them.  (1 Corinthians 15:29) They were confused about this ordinance of when and whom should be baptized so they were baptizing  everyone, dead or alive.

Strangely enough, they didn’t believe in the resurrection and that is where Paul comes in with his admonition and question.  Why are you being baptized for dead people when you don’t believe they’ll rise from the dead anyway?  Remember, the theme in 1 Corinthians chapter fifteen is Paul giving a dissertation for the defense of Jesus’ resurrection.

  Jesus gave us two ordinances to observe; baptism and partaking in communion. In obedience you are doing what he says to do – be baptized.  You are publicly being set apart and declaring you are a follower of Jesus.

Being dunked down into the water symbolizes you are dead to sin.  Being raised out of the water symbolizes your new life in Christ.

It also serves as a sign for people that after you die and are buried, you will be resurrected to live eternally in the presence of God.

According to the Mormon Church though, Jesus’ teachings are never enough – there always has to be something else to sooth the mind of its founder Joseph Smith and to keep the adherents too busy to study out the truth for themselves.

Number of people we can save?  Zero.

Only Jesus can save someone and you spending extra time in a baptismal font serves no purpose other than making your skin wrinkly and keeping your focus off of the true Redeemer.

Doctrine and Covenants 128:18; “…It is sufficient to know, in this case, that the earth will be smitten with a curse unless there is a welding link of some kind or other between the fathers and the children, upon some subject or other—and behold what is that subject? It is the baptism for the dead. For we without them cannot be made perfect; neither can they without us be made perfect. Neither can they nor we be made perfect without those who have died in the gospel also; for it is necessary in the ushering in of the dispensation of the fulness of times…”

So we die and then we’re judged.  No where in this passage or in others does it say that people will be presenting the gospel to us and getting baptized by proxy for us after we die.  In the reference for today even the LDS scriptures agree, but as you’ll see in tomorrow’s witnessing tip, they won’t.  Also note that this supposedly took place in 74 BC.

THE TRUTH ABOUT THE TRIPLE COMBINATION

     There are so many subjects in this topic that people could write books about it; in fact a few of my good friends have!  The contradictions within the writings of the LDS Church are vast so I am not going to go into much detail here.  Suffice it to say that I highly recommend getting the Christian Companion to the Triple Combination written by Colleen Ralson, you can purchase this from our website or Personal Freedom Outreach; a subsidiary of Utah Missions.

It works as a great tool to emphasize to the ex-Mormon that LDS doctrine is indeed flawed.  It also serves as assurance to the ex-Mormon the contradictory teachings weren’t their imagination.  While they work through this workbook they are able to see for themselves the magnitude of the errors.

The 3-in-1 (also known as quad or triple combination) is what the Church considers to be their standard works or scripture.  They are a compilation of the Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price.  It becomes a “quad” if the Bible is in the same book.  They believe that all the books but the Bible are inerrant.  Their 8th Article of Faith states:  “We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.”

Notice how they didn’t say; “we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly”.  There is obviously a difference in the way the Bible is a more deficient book of God.  For a few ex-Mormons going through the exodus process, it may take some time before they truly believe the Bible is the inerrant word of God.  Remind them of scriptures like

 Isaiah 40:8; “The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.”

      Another scripture that I prayed a lot when I got out was Mark 9:24 when the rich man asks Jesus to help him with his unbelief.   Intellectually I believed in Jesus.  In my heart, well that was sometimes “iffy”.  Mark describes the man who came to Jesus and begged him for help.  He told Jesus he knew God had sent Him; in his heart the old tapes kept playing the same old song…what if?  Jesus won’t desert you in your hour of need!  Also share with them factual information about the Bible mentioned in the previous section.  And as always, if there is a favorite verse that you rely upon, share it with the ex-Mormon!

There are of course many good, reliable books and websites to use as tools for when there is doubt.  The websites I’ve found over the years give verifiable truth to the issues raised and works through each scenario meticulously.  While going through this life change there will be times when the ex-Mormon goes through a myriad of emotions and doubts all at the same time. One thing that is going to be there for sure is anger and hatred towards Joseph Smith.  I haven’t been immune to the whole process and remember well what it felt like discovering the truth.

The emphasis of how important Joseph Smith was and still is to Church members cannot be overstated.  His words still reverberates within the covers of their “scripture” and in the hallways of their ward buildings.  The lies that the members have espoused are deep-seated in the hearts and minds of the believers.  It’s no wonder the new Christian experiences a multitude of emotions all at once as they continue learning the truth about their heritage.  Case in point is the following doctrine about the triple combination.

I’ve taken a speech from the Encyclopedia of Mormonism, pgs. 405-7 and listed it in sections below.  The purpose in doing this is to show the general public the pages of doctrine that are soaked into the minds of these dear people.  Anyone reading and listening to this year after year would have a difficult time staying focused.

After each section I have posted a few questions for the ex-Mormon.  Allow them to read the paragraphs individually and ask them to list what problems they may see.  Then show them the list of questions (add some of your own!) and compare.  Encourage them as they begin to take control of their own thought life.  You know the old saying:  “Garbage in, garbage out”.  The magnitude of lies they’ve been taught and have believed is incredible.

Don’t forget:  1. Prayer.  2. Bible.

 “The Doctrine and Covenants is a compilation of revelations, most of which were received by the Prophet Joseph Smith for the establishment and governance of the kingdom of God in the latter days. It is a standard work of the Church… Its main focus is to build up the Church of Jesus Christ and to bring people into harmony with Christ’s kingdom… It is viewed as the capstone of the Church; its companion volume, the Book of Mormon, is seen as the keystone…” (pg. 405)

 What or who is the capstone in the Bible, give proof.  __________________________________________________

What or who should be the “keystone”, biblically speaking.

What is the purpose of the Bible?  Compare that with what was said above in regards to the D&C and the BoM.____________

Because of copyright laws I did not reprint all three pages of the example I am giving here. If the ex-Mormon wants to see it in full, (which is something I highly recommend), my quotes in the paragraph above to the end of this section came from the Encyclopedia of Mormonism, pages 405 through 407.

The Book of Mormon was written to convince all individuals that Jesus is the Christ… the Doctrine and Covenants was given to organize and orient them according to God’s mind and kingdom.”

Where does it say (if it does at all) in the Bible that it was written to convince all individuals that Jesus is the Christ?

__________________________________________________

According to the Bible, who does the convincing of man’s soul?

___________________________________________________

___________________________________________________

Also, why is it they need to “organize and orient them to God’s mind and kingdom”?  Wouldn’t the Bible already have served that purpose?  These “further revelations” aren’t just simple additions to the Bible; they serve as replacements.

Over the years after the first printing, other revelations were received and some earlier materials were deleted… In subsequent editions, more sections were added…” (pg. 406)

Stop the presses!  The term “earlier materials” has jumped off the pages and captured my full attention!  Why would you delete some earlier materials if they are revelations from God?  Why does this god keep changing his mind?

What does Numbers 23:9 say about God?    ______________

Is it okay with you if the god you worship changes his/her mind at their own whim?  What does Malachi 3:6 say about God?  ____________________________________________________

Despite the fact that many of these revelations are personally directed to certain individuals or groups in nineteenth-century times and places, they contain principles that have eternal application and thus current value.”  (pg. 407)

     There has been a ton of “stuff” to dissect in just this little section but it will be well worth the study!

The first problem I see in the example above is applying revelations meant for specific people to the general population of today.  The Bible has never operated in this fashion and neither should anyone else, biblically speaking and otherwise.  An example of this philosophy would be the prophecy given to the elders of the LDS Church that they must build a temple in Zion.

How could prophesying that Zion would be found in Independence, Missouri, apply to someone like my mother who lives in Utah right now?  My mother is in her sixties; she’s raising her grandchildren and lives across the street from her ailing parents.  How can she take these “scriptures” and apply them to her daily life?  D&C 57:1-3 says that the elders of the church should build a temple in Independence in 1831.

How does this failed prophecy help my mom in her walk with her Heavenly Father?

The revelations include warnings of divine judgments upon the wicked; teachings about the progression of human souls toward exaltation and eternal life through the gospel of Jesus Christ; information about scripture, including the coming forth of the Book of Mormon and the translation of the Bible by Joseph Smith.”  (pg. 407)

I would have the ex-Mormon look in the index of the D&C, BoM, and PofGP for a variety of subjects, look up the references and begin really looking into the claims and warnings.  See if the warning to obey “such and such” is still a gospel law they have to obey or if they’ve received further revelation to discontinue that “law”, i.e. polygamy (new and everlasting covenant).

…instructions about the priesthood, its restoration, functions, offices, and ordinances; commandments and instructions to people of the Church regarding personal behavior, education, lands and property, buildings, and caring for the poor; and callings and counsel to preach and live the gospel.”  (pg. 407)

What laws or ordinances are no longer required in the LDS Church and why?  _________________________________________

In October of ‘06 Kirk and I participated in a live debate on a Christian radio talk show in Seattle.  A local stake president that took part in the debate told me at the end of the show, off-air of course, that the Church never forbade the members from drinking caffeinated colas or coffee.  I couldn’t believe what I had just heard!  He said that I was trying to be “sensationalistic” just to get attention!  Argh!  He said; “Members listen to one thing and hear another; therefore they are the ones getting things all wrong”.  In other words; “The 12.5 million members didn’t quite understand the prophecy that is now part of the Word of Wisdom”.

The Church will always have instructions for everything, and sadly enough the members’ understanding of each of those doctrines varies from person to person.  If anything about this chapter sticks out for the ex-Mormon I pray it would be you won’t forget the truth about the “Standard Works”.

From the moment the first Book of Mormon was printed in 1830 to date, there have been over 4,000 changes made to the Book of Mormon – these do not include typographical or printing errors.  All of the 4,000 plus changes are grammatical in nature.  You can purchase or see proof of this from many reputable websites.  There will be a list of recommendations in the Bibliography for Chapter 8.  The Utah Lighthouse Ministry run by Sandra Tanner has a book she and her late husband compiled that shows a side-by-side account of the 1830 BoM and the latest edition printed in the nineties.

Joseph Smith said in TPJS, pg 299 that he didn’t use any Greek or Latin when translating the Book of Mormon.

“To the Editor of the Times & Seasons:  Sir:—Through the medium of your paper, I wish to correct an error among men that profess to be learned, liberal and wise; and I do it the more cheerfully, because I hope sober-thinking and sound-reasoning people will sooner listen to the voice of truth, than be led astray by the vain pretensions of the self-wise. The error I speak of, is the definition of the word “Mormon.” It has been stated that this word was derived from the Greek word “mormo.” This is not the case. There was no Greek of Latin upon the plates from which I, through the grace of God, translated the Book of Mormon. Let the language of that book speak for itself.”

We recently completed a project counting how many time Greek or Latin words showed up in the Book of Mormon.  After identifying over 60 words that derived from the Greek or Latin we stopped counting at 7,290 words.

The Book of Mormon holds many false prophecies; one of which is located very near the beginning.  1 Nephi 2:8 says that the river “Laman” emptied into the Red Sea.  To date there has never been a river that has emptied into the Red Sea.

Jacob 2:25 says that polygamy is an abomination before God.  That verse alone tells me someone is lying.  Joseph Smith declared to Emma and the rest of the world in D&C 132 that unless you practice plural marriage you are damned!

Likewise the D&C contradicts itself and other sacred writings of the LDS Church.  The writings in this can’t be trusted based on the passage listed above.  Smith called plural marriage “the new and everlasting covenant”.  If it’s everlasting then why did the US ban it from existence in 1890?  If this was from God wouldn’t He have been able to do something about it?

D&C 114 is a false prophecy all unto itself.  Smith prophesied that Patten would go on a mission the following spring – Patten was killed in a gun battle six months later, being unable to fulfill that prophecy for Joseph.

The Pearl of Great Price contradicts itself without even having to look at the other writings of the Church.  For instance the creation story in Moses completely disagrees with the story in Abraham.

The false prophecies in Moses 7 place it in the same category as polygamy – a false prophecy.  The prophecy is that the black people were to live under the “Curse of Cain” while here on earth.  According to the LDS Church based on Smith’s prophecy here the blacks were not to hold the priesthood – ever.

In 1978 Spencer W. Kimball, then president and prophet of the LDS Church, received a new revelation from God allowing the blacks into the priesthood.  So which prophet is right?  If you say Kimball then what does that say about the beloved Joseph?  No one ever speaks ill about him.

Lesson Plan for Chapter Eight

How many false prophecies does it take before you can safely say someone is not a true prophet of God?  Show biblical proof.  __________________________________________________

Are you (the ex-Mormon) aware of what the book of Jeremiah is about?  I cannot speed over to the counter of books fast enough with you so that you can find out!  If you do know then write out your thoughts below as you compare Jeremiah and the story of the Book of Mormon.  Who are these Israelites the BoM talks about that didn’t obey God’s warning to stay put?

foundationsThis particular teaching of the LDS Church is one of the three main reasons I left the Mormon Church.

In order to believe in Mormonism, the acceptance of man living with God before the earth was created is a must.  They teach that mankind was created spiritually through a sexual union between God and one of his billions of wives.  Your behavior in the pre-existence determined which family you’re born into, where and when you would live your mortal life and what color of skin you’d have here.  If you had anything less than stellar behavior there, the chances of you being born “white and delightsome” here were slim to nothing.

I was taught in countless Sacrament Meetings, Primary, MIA classes and LDS Seminary that my black curly hair, dark brown eyes and olive skin was proof I hadn’t been valiant.  I always wondered what the millions of other people must’ve done to deserve being born in Africa or China.  In the end my biggest question was why God suddenly liked my family in June of 1978 when we hadn’t changed anything in our behavior.  Kimball’s revelation was the first time I started questioning the leadership.
