April 16 – Philippians 2:5-7; “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God, But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men.”

Journal of Discourses 1:361; “If I had forty wives in the United States, they did not know it, and could not substantiate it, neither did I ask any lawyer, judge, or magistrate for them. I live above the law, and so do this people.” –– Brigham Young, Great Salt Lake City, August 1, 1852

Journal of Discourses 26:181-182; “This principle [polygamy] was given for a purpose, and that purpose is the salvation of the female sex as well as the male sex. … I say again and again that the “Mormon” people can wait the result of this thing without fear; they can afford to suffer pains and penalties if that will but open the door by which the fair daughters of Eve can be redeemed from the position in which they are placed and be made honored and respected women of society.” – John H. Smith, Logan, Utah, April 6, 1885

Journal of Discourses 26:279-280; “One of the most striking points of difference between the religion of the Latter-day Saints and that of other people is our belief in revelation. We not only believe that the Lord did in ancient days reveal Himself to man, but we accept the doctrine of revelation as necessary for the guidance of the Church to-day; that the same Lord who so signally blessed and sustained His people anciently can bestow similar blessings in our day…

To do away with revelation would be to refuse to recognize the Author of our faith as our guide and teacher. Who can find out the things of God except he is taught either of the Almighty Himself, or those who are taught of Him?

It is a matter of utter impossibility for man through his own wisdom to either find out God, or to act in the things of God, without first having been taught and authorized so to do. …

we have declared the fact that present revelation was and is essential for the guidance of man, and that the Church of Christ never did or could exist without it, and that the Lord had again revealed Himself to man, our hearers would generally either turn aside… ” – John Henry Smith, Salt Lake City, July 27, 1885

Journal of Discourses 21:296; “…if plurality of marriage is not true or in other words, if a man has no divine right to marry two wives or more in this world, then marriage for eternity is not true, and your faith is all vain, and all the sealing ordinances, and powers, pertaining to marriages for eternity are vain, worthless, good for nothing; for as sure as one is true the other also must be true.” – Orson Pratt, Salt Lake City, July 18, 1880

Journal of Discourses 4:77-78; “I never preached to the world but what the cry was, “…Joe Smith has done thus and so.” I would tell the people that they did not know him, and I did, and that I knew him to be a good man… He may get drunk every day of his life, sleep with his neighbor’s wife every night, run horses and gamble, I do not care anything about that…But the doctrine he has produced will save you and me, and the whole world; and if you can find fault with that, find it.” – Brigham Young, Great Salt Lake City, November 9, 1856

Witnessing Tip of the Day February February 2 – In Colossians 1:15 we learn a lot about the nature and character of Jesus.  “Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creation.”  There are truly no other words which could explain how beautiful He really is.

“The Journal of Discourses is not an official publication of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is a compilation of sermons and other materials from the early years of the Church, which were transcribed and then published. It included some doctrinal instruction but also practical teaching, some of which is speculative in nature and some of which is only of historical interest.” Journal of Discourses

Journals1As a reminder, the quote above came from the official website of the LDS Church, and  the problem with it is clearly seen in the preface of each volume for the JoD (Journal of Discourses). While each volume has a unique intro, we believe volume two contains one of the most horrifying statements we’ve read in all of Mormondom.

The purpose in gathering all the Church’s endorsements for the JoD isn’t to sensationalize, rather, it’s to inform. We pray the Christian will be able to utilize the info to aid while witnessing, and members of the Church will see the contradictions in the Church’s statements. Please know we’re praying for all involved!

With Love in Christ;

Michelle

‘Sin is not just breaking God’s laws; it is breaking His heart.’ – Adrian Rogers

Journals1A distinguishing mark of Mormonism is found in its infrastructure. Referring to itself as a corporation, it’s steeped in nepotism, and runs like a well oiled machine operating from the top down, think pyramid.

Members are assigned tasks, known as ‘callings’, and will fulfill their respective role until their phone rings with another position. If they’re part of the upper echelon, they’ll serve in that capacity the remainder of their life.

Mormons believe the prophet of the Church is the sole mouthpiece for God. No one else on earth can speak for God to direct the Church, and no one else is given revelations from God to move the Church in a different direction.

James 1:8 ‘A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.’

Journals1 People are funny. Some will say one thing when professing just the opposite. Such is the case we have here today with the Mormon Church and their 26 volumes of discourses and lectures; the Journal of Discourses. While retrieving info for an update on some info on our Journal of Discourses page, I came across an interesting article on MormonThink.com who provided the following information on the Journal of Discourses –

“If the Journal of Discourses are currently relegated to the status of not-very-important as the entry from the source above notes, why has it been used so many times of the years by the Church in its official publications? Not only publications, but over the pulpit in General Conferences. A search just of General Conferences from 1971-2013 returned 84,000 hits.”

Numbers 27:17; “Which may go out before them, and which may go in before them, and which may lead them out, and which may bring them in; that the congregation of the LORD be not as sheep which have no shepherd.”

Brigham Young 4 Journal of Discourses 4:297-298; “…if He (God) should suffer him (Joseph Smith) to lead the people astray, it would be because they ought to be led astray…it would be because they deserved it…” – Brigham Young, Great Salt Lake City, March 29, 1857

Psalms 33:6-9; “By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth. 7 He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth up the depth in storehouses. 8 Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. 9 For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.”

earth-1 Journal of Discourses 18:231; “It is said in this book (the Bible) that God made the earth in six days.  This is a mere term, but it matters not whether it took six days, six months, six years, or six thousand years. The creation occupied periods of time. We are not authorized to say what the duration of these days was whether Moses penned these words as we have them, or whether the translators of the Bible have given the words their intended meaning. How ever, God created the world. If I were a sectarian I would say, according to their philosophy, as I have heard many of them say hundreds of times, “God created all things out of nothing; in six days he created the world out of nothing.” You may be assured the Latter-day Saints do not believe any such thing.” –  Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, Sunday Afternoon, Sept. 17, 1876

Today we’re looking at a speech given by a Mormon apostle, George Quayle Cannon. Mr. Cannon served Cannon George Qas a political strategist under four Mormon prophets; Brigham Young, John Taylor, Wilford Woodruff, and Lorenzo Snow.

The reason we’re looking at this particular speech is because of the numerous lies he tried to pass off as truth, and the way he kept maligning Christians. What Christian do you know that goes about demeaning his brothers and sisters in Christ?

We’ve trimmed this reference down considerably because of its length. If you’d like to read it in full, the link is provided below. Our remarks are in red.

Galatians 4:16; “Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?”

mailbagToday we’re looking at an e-mail we received a couple of days ago. The young man’s note sounds like many of the other Mormon e-mails we’ve received in the past.

Our first question to the young man is also the same question we ask every time we get something like this:

Why do you feel the need to lie?

1 Peter 5:2; “Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind.”

Journal of Discourses 4:112; “I wish the most strict attention of the entire congregation… I shall require the people to be perfectly still, while they are here and we are trying to speak to them. Let there be no talking, whispering, nor shuffling of feet. …

Kid cryingI will say, in regard to the sisters who bring children here to make a noise, they have never yet sufficiently thought, nor sufficiently considered their own place in this world, nor the place of others, to know that there is any other person living on the earth  but themselves; and they think, when they hear people talk, that it is a noise through a dark veil. I cannot say much for the education, based on good feeling, that such persons have.

Were I to describe it in a plain way, I should say that they are people of no breeding, that they were never bred but came up; that is about as good a character as I can afford to give to any mother that will keep a squalling child in a meeting. I have never said to the congregation, look and see who they are, for you may distinguish by your ears, without looking, the mothers that have had good teaching and been brought up in a civilized society. … We shall have large congregations during the Conference, and we wish perfect order maintained.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, October 5, 1856
