Archive for December, 2018

The other day I came across a video on YouTube of a Christian Pastor interviewing two Mormon missionaries. He asked them many questions about some of the core, deeper doctrines of Mormonism, and was told things that you probably won’t hear from the missionaries when they come to your door. Throughout the interview, the missionaries were very polite and cordial and seemed to do their best to answer the questions he asked them.

I’d like to go through some of the questions and content of the interview. I’ll make sure to link the video along with time stamps of where the question was asked so you can hear their answers for yourself.

(Just a reminder before you watch the video, anytime a Mormon uses the phrase “the gospel of Jesus Christ” they are referring to the Mormon gospel, not the biblical gospel.) (more…)

December 20 — God in Our Midst. Hebrews 1:3; “Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high.” (more…)

Liahona, ‘Making Your Life a Soul-Stirring Journey of Personal Growth,’ December 2018 “It takes a special kind of faith to “believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom,” and then to be ready to accept them, whatever they are. … This isn’t about knowing the names of the twelve tribes of Israel or diagramming the allegory of the olives trees, as useful as such exercises may be. This kind of learning is about changing ourselves, about being different (better) because we know more of what God knows. … …as we learn His will, as we gather light and truth and make it part of us every day, that light will grow in us, “brighter and brighter until the perfect day” (D&C 50:24; emphasis added) when we can be with Him because we will be like Him.” — Jeffrey R. Holland (more…)

Doctrines of Salvation I:188 “If Joseph’s claims and declarations were built upon fraud and deceit, there would appear many errors and contradictions, which would be easy to detect. December 17 — Wholesale Rejection. Zechariah 11:12-13d; “And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver. 13 And the LORD said unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was prised at of them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them to the potter in the house of the LORD.”

“And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications…” Zechariah 12:10

God is a God of His word. You can know with 100% certainty when He says He’ll do something, it’ll be fulfilled. The problem many people have is a prideful heart unwilling to accept someone else is in charge. … And so it goes with my beloved heritage of Mormonism, and at one time, even myself.

This Christmas, take a few minutes to give a Mormon a great gift! Teach him/her how to rely upon God’s Holy Spirit by reading His word, sharing examples of what He’s personally done for you, and how He fulfilled the promises He made in the OT. The passage in Zechariah is a great tool to use when sharing how God works! (more…)

The great significance of Jesus’ death on the cross & 30 pieces of silver.  Zechariah 11:12-13c; “And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver. 13 And the LORD said unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was prised at of them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them to the potter in the house of the LORD.”

Matthew 27:3-5; “Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, 4 Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that. 5 And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.” (more…)

Being in the throes of the Christmas season we can sometimes forget to slow down, and remember the reason why we’re so busy.

I was reminded of how chaotic things used to be and had to praise the Lord for what He’s done.

My life has done a 180° turnaround from the days of Mormonism. Gone are the years of wondering if I’ve been good enough for God to be with me.

Today I can pause knowing with 100% certainty, God’s Holy Spirit is there to comfort, and speak to me 24/7 because He lives inside of me. As a Mormon this wasn’t a reality, and it never entered my thoughts because I was always too busy with worries that beset me.

This dichotomy is overwhelming. It’s also what the Lord keeps reminding me of this week, so today and tomorrow we’re looking at Joseph Smith’s interpretation of the Holy Spirit. You’ll notice how they refer to God’s gift as ‘it’, or simply as the ‘Holy Ghost’, causing a great disconnect for the Mormon.

Mormon Doctrine, 681 “The Holy Ghost is a personage of Spirit, he constitutes the third person in the Trinity, the godhead. The gift or presentation of the Holy Ghost is the authoritative act of conferring him upon man.

The Holy Ghost in person may visit men, and will visit those who are worthy, and bear witness to their spirit of God and Christ, but may not tarry with them. * (more…)

Journal of Discourses 24:38-45 “…we believe in marriage, we have opened the door in that direction, and we say to the sexes marry; but we close the door in the other direction, and say, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not seduce, defile, prostitute or lead astray innocent beings; if you do, and we had the power, we would punish you. …it was plain to be seen that nothing in that bill [Edmunds Bill] was designed to reach real vice, to strike down immorality; it was a blow at our religious practices.” — George Quayle Cannon, Salt Lake City, Sunday, June 25, 1882 (more…)

First Presidency releases 2018 Christmas message “Following is the 2018 First Presidency Christmas message, released Dec. 6 and signed by President Russell M. Nelson, President Dallin H. Oaks and President Henry B. Eyring:

Our Savior, Jesus Christ, offers to us four incomparable gifts — the capacity to love others, the ability to forgive, the blessing of repentance and the promise of life everlasting. … They were made possible because Jehovah condescended to come to earth as the baby Jesus. He was born of an immortal Father and a mortal mother. He was born in Bethlehem under the most humble of circumstances. His was the holy birth foreseen by prophets since the days of Adam. Jesus Christ is God’s transcendent gift — the gift of the Father to all of His children. (See John 3:16.) We joyfully celebrate His birth this Christmas season.”

If she makes the sacrifice; if I shoulder the additional responsibility, and open the door that will save one of Eve’s fair daughters, who is wronged? Do I plot for the overthrow of the government, the breaking in pieces of the powers that be, because I desire that my sister or my daughter, my aunt or my cousin may be preserved from the evils thrown around them by the systems that man has created? No.” — John Henry Smith, Logan, Utah, April 6, 1885 (more…)
