August 18 — Millennial Star, No. 8, Vol. 26, February 20, 1864, pp. 118-119 “I met with the twelve at brother Joseph’s. He conversed with us in a familiar manner on a variety of subjects, and explained to us the Urim and Thummim which he found with the plates, called in the Book of Mormon the Interpreters. He said that every man who lived on the earth was entitled to a seer stone, and should have one, but they are kept from them in consequence of their wickedness and most of those who do find one make an evil use of it; he showed us his seer stone.” – Brigham Young (more…)

‘Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.’ Colossians 2:8
August 16 — Stalking Snakes in Book of Mormon. Ether 9:31-33 “And there came forth poisonous serpents also upon the face of the land, and did poison many people. And it came to pass that their flocks began to flee before the poisonous serpents, towards the land southward, which was called by the Nephites Zarahemla. 32 And it came to pass that there were many of them which did perish by the way; nevertheless, there were some which fled into the land southward. 33 And it came to pass that the Lord did cause the serpents that they should pursue them no more, but that they should hedge up the way that the people could not pass, that whoso should attempt to pass might fall by the poisonous serpents.” (more…)

“That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive.” Ephesians 4:14
August 15 — God’s Appearance in America c. BC 2,200. Ether 12:20-21 “And behold, we have seen in this record that one of these was the brother of Jared; for so great was his faith in God, that when God put forth his finger he could not hide it from the sight of the brother of Jared, because of his word which he had spoken unto him, which word he had obtained by faith. 21 And after the brother of Jared had beheld the finger of the Lord, because of the promise which the brother of Jared had obtained by faith, the Lord could not withhold anything from his sight; wherefore he showed him all things, for he could no longer be kept without the veil.” (more…)

August 14 — B.H. Roberts: BoM is Tale by a Child. Studies of the Book of Mormon, by B.H. Roberts, p. 251 “If from all that has gone before in Part 1, the view be taken that the Book of Mormon is merely of human origin… if it be assumed that he is the author of it, then it could be said there is much internal evidence in the book itself to sustain such a view.
“In the first place there is a certain lack of perspective in the things the book relates as history that points quite clearly to an underdeveloped mind as their origin. The narrative proceeds in characteristic disregard of conditions necessary to its reasonableness, as if it were a tale told by a child, with utter disregard for consistency.” (more…)
Reverence for Joseph Smith Required

August 13 — Reverence for Joseph Smith Required. “A Choice Seer,” Ensign, Aug. 1986 “Ages ago in the Great Council, Jesus was the prepared but meek Volunteer. As the Father described the plan of salvation and the need for a Savior, it was Jesus who stepped forward and said humbly but courageously, ‘Here am I, send me.’ (Abr. 3:27; see also Moses 4:2.) Never has anyone offered to do so much for so many with so few words!
“It is through the Prophet Joseph Smith, whom the resurrected Jesus called, that we learn these things and so much more about Jesus–long before Bethlehem and well beyond Calvary.
“Whenever we speak of the Prophet Joseph Smith, therefore, it should be in reverent appreciation of the Lord who called him and whom Joseph served so well.” – Neal A. Maxwell (more…)

You will clearly perceive, from the revelation which God has given, that you can never obtain a fulness of glory, without being married to a righteous man for time and for all eternity.” – Orson Pratt (See Conference Report October 1946 p. 36, where Joseph Fielding Smith is quoting Orson Pratt in reference above.) August 9 — Cain, Nephi and Joe Smith Born of Goodly Parents. If there’s ever been a group of people cut from the same cloth, leaders of Mormonism surely fit the bill. Check out the vocabulary these self-proclaimed men of God have used to describe Cain, Joseph Smith and his parents, as well as their prophet Nephi.
Cain Born of Goodly Parents?
The Way to Perfection, pp. 97 – 98 “BORN OF GOODLY PARENTS Cain was born of goodly parents. Michael, the great prince, who helped form the earth, was his father. No man, save Jesus Christ, was ever blessed with greater honor or responsibility than Michael. No man deserved to be honored more than he. He had been given the first place in the history of the world and was taught directly from the heavens. Cain had the great honor of being Adam’s son, and he, too, was privileged with the same blessings as his father. What a mighty man he could have been! How his name might have stood out with excellent luster as that of one of the valiant sons of God! How he might have been honored to the latest generation! But he would have none of it!” – Joseph Fielding Smith [emp. added]

July 28 — Christian Prayers to be Shunned. Mormon Doctrine, p. 414 “Those formal, written prayers which are commonly read by ministers, and those recited by lay church members in doing penance or seeking grace, are devoid of the true spirit of prayer and should be shunned. Frequently they are spoken without real intent; and their use keeps men from searching their own hearts in an attempt to pray in faith according to an approved pattern so that actual blessings may be gained from Deity.” — Bruce McConkie (more…)

Joseph Smith, the Chosen One
Posted in July, Mormon Dilemmas, Witnessing Tip of the Day, tagged Bruce McConkie, Come Hear the Voice of the Lord, December 1985, Ensign, false prophet Joseph Smith on 07/27/2024| Leave a Comment »
“A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies.” Proverbs 14:5
July 27 — Joseph Smith, the Chosen One. “Come: Hear the Voice of the Lord”, Ensign, December 1985 “Joseph Smith himself read in the book of James the famous words known to us all: “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” (James 1:5.)
In describing his feelings at the time, he said: “Never did any passage of scripture come with more power to the heart of man than this did at this time to mine. It seemed to enter with great force into every feeling of my heart. I reflected on it again and again.” (JS—H 1:12.)
Then, because the hour had come for the ushering in of the dispensation of the fulness of times, and because he was the one chosen and foreordained from eternity to commence the work, the Great God and his Beloved Son, descending in eternal splendor from the courts of glory, manifested themselves to this guileless and believing youth.
But, be it remembered, the scripture was the guidepost leading to the receipt of the First Vision, a vision equalled by few in import and glory in all the history of the world.” — Bruce McConkie (more…)
