Old-Testament-Gospel-Doctrine-Teachers-Manual-35570000The name of the LDS Sunday School Lesson for week #28 is “After the Fire a Still Small Voice” and it centers on 1st Kings and the prophet Elijah.

My heart hurts.  It hurts because of the lies being fed to the Mormon people week after week through the onslaught of misleading statements and downright blatant lies about God and the people He worked through in the Old Testament.  This pain and heaviness is reminiscent of my days in Mormonism.  Going to church every Sunday as a Mormon reminded me of all the works I still had to do in the upcoming week and it was cumbersome.

Baptismal Interview Questions – Part 5

MormonBaptisimOne thing you’ll learn as you begin the process of converting to Mormonism is that Mormons think of themselves as a “covenant keeping people”. They believe they enter into and make many covenants with God throughout their lives, the first being the one they enter into when they’re baptized into the Mormon Church. This final question in the interview process asks for their commitment to keep this covenant.

flowers-cartoon-8This month’s Visiting Teaching message is centered on the women in the church following the example of the Jesus Christ.

The message begins with a quote from the Book of Mormon:

“To the Nephites, Christ said, “For the works which ye have seen me do that shall ye also do” (3 Nephi 27:21).”

flowers-cartoon-8Because the November issue of the Ensign contains all the General Conference talks from October it doesn’t provide a Visiting Teaching message. Women are encouraged to “prayerfully select” one of the conference addresses to use as their message this month with those they visit.

I choose Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf’s talk “Come, join with Us”.

Spirit of Christ Already in You

salt lake mormon temple 2Preach My Gospel; “It is important for a …..missionary….to know that the Holy Ghost can work through the Light of Christ. A teacher of gospel truths is not planting something foreign or even new into an adult or a child. Rather, the missionary or teacher is making contact with the Spirit of Christ already there. The gospel will have a familiar ‘ring’ to them.” (“The Light of Christ”, address delivered at the seminar for new mission presidents, 22 June 2004, 2).” – Boyd K. Packer

Godhood Status and the Holy Spirit

Mormon Decisions 10Encyclopedia of Joseph Smith Teachings, pg. 321; “But the Holy Ghost is yet a spiritual body and waiting to take to himself a body, as the Savior did or as God did or the gods before them took bodies; for the Savior says the work that my Father did do I also. . . . He took himself a body and then laid down his life that he might take it up again. (Joseph Smith, The Words of Joseph Smith, p. 382; standardized).

Prophets of God

salt lake mormon temple 2“We Need Living Prophets…“Because Heavenly Father loves His children, He has not left them to walk through this mortal life without direction and guidance,” President Dieter F. Uchtdorf said. “That is why He pleads so earnestly with us through His prophets. Just as we want what is best for our loved ones, Heavenly Father wants what is best for us.”

Holy Spirit’s Arrival

Mormon Decisions 103 Nephi 7:21; “And it came to pass that the thirty and first year did pass away, and there were but few who were converted unto the Lord; but as many as were converted did truly signify unto the people that they had been visited by the power and Spirit of God, which was in Jesus Christ, in whom they believed.”

John 7:39; “(But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)”

Temple Garments Protect Members

Mormon Decisions 10Letter of the First Presidency, October 10, 1988; “The promise of protection and blessings is conditional upon worthiness and faithfulness in keeping the covenant. Members of the Church wear the garment as a reminder of the scared covenants they have made with the Lord and also as a protection against temptation and evil. How it is worn is an outward expression of an inward commitment to follow the Savior.”

Mortal Messiah 2:294; “From the beginning the garments of the saints have enjoyed a special and sacred place in true worship. They cover that nakedness which when exposed leads to lewd and lascivious conduct. They stand as a symbol of modesty and decency and are a constant reminder to true believers of the restraints and controls placed by a divine providence upon their acts.”

Born Again

Mormon Decisions 10Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pg 162; “Being born again, comes by the Spirit of God through ordinances.”

John 3:3-6; “Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? 5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”

Finding Peace

Mormon DilemmasJohn 14:26-27; “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. 27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

True to the Faith, pg 173; “Blessings from Attending the Temple – In addition to being a place where sacred priesthood ordinances are performed, the temple is a place of peace and revelation. When you are troubled or when crucial decisions weigh heavily on your mind, you may take your cares to the temple. There you can receive spiritual guidance.”

The countdown to the Mormons biannual General Conference has begun. In a couple of days Mormons everywhere will be gathered around their TV’s in anticipation and awe of hearing from their current prophet and church leaders. On The Mormon Channel’s Facebook page there’s a quote by Quentin L. Cook which reads –

“We may not avoid every storm of life, but following the counsel of living prophets will help us ride out the storm.”

As a former Mormon and follower of Jesus Christ I can’t help but feel sad by this statement, and to be honest a little irritated. I just want to scream “WHAT ABOUT JESUS?” doesn’t His “counsel” mean anything to them?

As born again believers we know that once we’ve repented, and put our trust in Jesus alone the Holy Spirit takes up “permanent residents” in our hearts. We then have direct communication with the Father and Son, and through the Holy Spirit we can rely on their counsel when times get rough.

Qualifying for the Holy Spirit

Serve with the Spirit”, Liahona and Ensign, November 2010; “Let us do whatever is required to qualify for the Holy Ghost as our companion, and then let us go forward fearlessly so that we will be given the powers to do whatever the Lord calls us to do. That growth in power to serve may come slowly, it may come in small steps that are difficult for you to see, but it will come.”— Henry B. Eyring

Thought of the Day about Mormonism and Gratitude or is it Gifts of the Holy Spirit?

Today I received an e-mail from the Church. A few years back I signed up to receive daily inspirational quotes from past and present LDS leaders and while they usually provide me with enough subject matters to witness to Mormons with, I thought I’d share this one with my readers.

There are times when we read the quotes of these leaders and have to wonder where they get their ideas from. Okay, okay I know it’s not the Lord, but I mean really, where do they get these ideas??? What is going on in those heads of theirs that opens their minds to some of this stuff?

Mind Control?

Favorite Quotations from the Collection of Thomas S. Monson, pg. 71; “There is no greater responsibility in the world than the training of a human soul.”

Like we’ve said so many times before, it’s the job of the Holy Spirit that does the transforming of the soul, not people. To believe you have that much power is a lie you’ve convinced yourself of possessing.
