January 24 – Conversion. Romans 8:9-10; “But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. 10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin…”

As you might imagine, leaving Mormonism comes with a laundry list of new experiences and seemingly never-ending surprises. One of the biggest shocks for me was learning there’s only one God.
For the next few days we’re going to look at some of the key biblical elements of the Trinity that sets Christianity apart from Mormonism. We pray it’ll be a handy reference portal Christians can use when witnessing, and for Mormons who want to know more about the god they worship. Today our subject matter is God. Tomorrow we’ll look at Jesus, and on day three we’re looking at the Holy Spirit.
Our new series will replace/update our existing page entitled God, Jesus & the Holy Spirit of the Bible.

January 23 – Book of Mormon. Deuteronomy 13:1-3; “If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, 2 And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; 3 Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.”

Introduction to Family History Student Manual, (2012), Chapter 7: Submitting Names for Temple Ordinances; “Elder Russell M. Nelson explained that a newly updated Family Search computer program facilitates family history work and helps Church members determine what temple ordinances have or have not been performed for each individual ancestor: “The Prophet Joseph Smith said, ‘The greatest responsibility in this world that God has laid upon us is to seek after our dead’ [Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith (2007), 475]. New technology makes it easier than ever to fulfill that responsibility. Temple and family history work is now facilitated by [Family Search]. This Internet-based system helps members identify their ancestors, determine what ordinance work needs to be done for them, and prepare their names for the temple. It can be accessed from home, a family history center, or wherever the Internet is available. The steps are easy to follow” (in Conference Report, Apr. 2010, 90; or Ensign, May 2010, 92–93).”

Book of Mormon Authorship: New Light on Ancient Origins [Provo: BYU Religious Studies Center, 1982], 8; “By its own account, the Book of Mormon is for doubters. It announces on its title page a clear purpose for all the hard labor of preserving records: “To the convincing of the Jew and Gentile that JESUS is the CHRIST, the ETERNAL GOD.” That statement presupposes that there would be serious and searing doubt in the world and that even religious readers, whatever their Messianic expectations, would not only raise questions about the historicity of this or that segment of the life of Jesus, but about the whole religious enterprise.” – Noel B. Reynolds, ed.

The Seer, “The Pre-existence of Man,” Vol. 1, No. 7, July, 1853, p. 98; “Spirits, though pure and innocent, before they entered the body, would become contaminated by entering a fallen tabernacle; not contaminated by their own sins, but by their connection with a body brought into the world by the fall, earthly, fallen, imperfect, and corrupt in its nature. A spirit, having entered such a tabernacle, though it may commit no personal sin, is unfit to return again into the presence of a holy Being. . .” – Orson Pratt, Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

January 16 – Are Mormons Christians. Today we’re looking at a subject in the LDS Gospel Topic Section of their website. I’ve become quite enamored with how the Bible provides answers to topics that speak directly to contemporary issues for us today. It’s a reminder that God obviously knew beforehand! Notice in their statement they make the accusation that sincere seekers of truth will accept their variant belief. Furthermore, freedom to worship as you please doesn’t mean you’re exempt from following rules. If you’re not worshiping the right Jesus, it still means you’re not Christian, regardless of what freedoms you may or may not have. Pray that God will open their hearts to this truth!

January 15 – Ashtoreth. Today ask the Mormon in your life for their opinion about their Heavenly Mother. Then ask if they’ve ever heard of Ashtoreth. Be sure you explain with demonstrative evidence (Bible and a dictionary) who this false goddess was, and why Israel was always in trouble for worshiping her. Without being judgmental towards them, ask if they see the correlation between their Heavenly Mother and Ashtoreth. To get a clear idea of who the Mormons believe she is, see our article ‘Heavenly Mother’.

If nothing else comes through our posts, let it be this one. It’s a warning for the body of Christ; beware dear ones, beware!
The LDS Church published an article this month serving as a reminder their tactics haven’t changed over the past 185 years. Their montage of attacks against the body of Christ is still the same stuff, on a different day. Because of its length we’re looking at only a part of this today, but will revisit it again.
Here in part is what Mr. Holland said –
Liahona, ‘Knowing the Godhead,’ January 2016 “
The Prophet Joseph Smith said, “It is the first principle of the gospel to know for a certainty the
character of God.”1 Furthermore, he added, “I want you all to know Him, and to be familiar with Him.”2 We must have “a correct idea of his … perfections, and attributes” and an admiration for “the excellency of [His] character.”3

January 12 – Ancient of Days. There are some names and phrases in the Bible that catches our immediate attention and Ancient of Days qualifies. The words bring a sense of reverence commanding our attention, doesn’t it? The passage in Daniel paints a picture like none other does; the flaming throne is judgment, and the white hair and title ‘Ancient’ denotes God who has existed before time began (Is 43:10). It puts it all in perspective for us eh? It puts us in a position of knowing who’s in charge! Sadly, it’s anything but in Mormonism. They’ve gone out of their way to malign the Lord and twist scripture in ways unheard of before.

The other day we looked at one of Orson Pratt’s false prophecies/teachings. His statement that the body of Christ ceased to exist, is of course, a lie. That being said, there was something else in his sermon we’re going to look at today. As a reminder, let’s take a look at his comments and then we’ll ask some questions!
Journal of Discourses 13:125; “Jesus made his appearance on the earth in the meridian of time, and he established his kingdom on the earth. But to fulfill ancient prophecies the Lord suffered that kingdom to be uprooted; in other words, the kingdoms of this world made war against the kingdom of God, established eighteen centuries ago, and they prevailed against it, and the kingdom ceased to exist. The great beast that John saw made war with it and prevailed against it, and human institutions, without prophets or inspired men, usurped the place of the ancient kingdom of God.” – Orson Pratt, Salt Lake City, April 10, 1870

“Except for a six-and-one-half-year gap, men of the Richards family have served as General Authorities continuously from 1840 to the present.” – D. Michael Quinn, Ensign 1980
Mr. Quinn’s great insight is a shining example of what the Richards
family means to Mormonism, and vice versa. Their identity as a family on a whole, and individually, has been so immersed and wrapped up in Mormonism, it’d be no stretch of the imagination to state they’d be lost without each other. They were, and still are, the ‘who’s who’ of Mormonism.
