Robert MilletEnsign, ‘The Eternal Gospel,’ July 1996, p. 53; “Knowing what we know concerning God our Father — that he is a personal being; that he has a body of salt lake mormon temple 2flesh and bones as tangible as our own; that he is an exalted and glorified being; that he was once a man and dwelt on an earth – and knowing that this knowledge was had by many of the ancients, should we be surprised to find legends and myths throughout the cultures of the earth concerning gods who have divine power but human attributes and passions? … Should we be surprised to find pagan traditions of virgin births and divine humans?” – Robert L. Millet

January2January 8 – Joshua 24:14-15; “Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD. 15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

Orson PrattJournal of Discourses 13:125; “Jesus made his appearance on the earth in the meridian of time, and he established his kingdom on the earth. But to fulfill ancientsalt lake mormon temple 2 prophecies the Lord suffered that kingdom to be uprooted; in other words, the kingdoms of this world made war against the kingdom of God, established eighteen centuries ago, and they prevailed against it, and the kingdom ceased to exist. The great beast that John saw made war with it and prevailed against it, and human institutions, without prophets or inspired men, usurped the place of the ancient kingdom of God.” – Orson Pratt, Salt Lake City, April 10, 1870

January2January 7 – Abraham. Who was he and does it matter? We find a great answer to this in Genesis 12:1-2. This passage sets into motion the foundational basis of every believer’s life! Ask yourself: are you willing to do as Abraham did? “Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: 2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing”.

stickman thinking 3Mormonism teaches upon exaltation, men will become gods of their own planets. See Mormon Dilemma 384.

Brigham Young taught that after men receive their own planet, they’re able to procreate with an exalted goddess wife, and beget spirit children.

Journal of Discourses 6:275; “After men have got their exaltations and their crowns—have become Gods, even the sons of God—are made Kings of kings and Lords of lords, they have the power then of propagating their species in spirit; and that is the first of their operations with regard to organizing a world.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, August 28, 1852

January2January 3 – Matthew 24:4-5, 23-24; “And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. 5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.  Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. 24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.”

Doctrines of Salvation 2:93; “How severe is the judgment on the man who has committed Joseph Fielding Smithadultery, even though he apparently is repentant? In the Doctrine and Covenants,salt lake mormon temple 2 42:24-26, the Lord has given us a key to this situation. If a person commits adultery and then repents with all his heart, he may be forgiven. If he repeats the offense, he is not to be forgiven, but is to be cast out. As I read it, the Lord has not provided that, under those circumstances, he can come back again.” – Joseph Fielding Smith

wedding rings 3From the inception of Mormonism itself there’s been controversy. Joe Smith’s unconventional lifestyle was laden with numerous events the majority of people either never thought of before, or outright shunned.

Ignoring or shunning Smith always brought the same reaction; outrage. If you weren’t supportive of his antics, you were labeled a heretic, or an ‘anti’. Fast forward two hundred years, and the story is pretty much the same, with the exception of one thing. Many church members are now backing off the list of excuses for early Utah polygamy because of historical evidence. (more…)

John TaylorDeseret News, June 9, 1880, p. 280; “David prayed that God would send hissalt lake mormon temple 2 enemies to hell quickly. Jesus, when he was being crucified suffering the pain of a cruel death, said “Father forgive them for they know not what they do”. I like that prayer much better than the other one. Father forgive them for they know not what they do. They are thy children though in the dark. Thou hast enlightened our minds for which we feel thankful; but, Oh Lord, forgive them and lead them, if thou canst, in the way of life. This is the feeling we ought to have…” – John Taylor (LDS Prophet)

Deseret_Store_-_with_Tithing_Office_and_Deseret_News_addition“‘Millions Shall Know “Brother Joseph” Again’: Witnesses of the Prophet’s Divine Role and Mission,” Selections from the Religious Education Student Symposium 2005 (Provo, UT: Religious Studies Center, Brigham Young University, 2005), 199–211; “…The man who taught, expounded, organized, preached, clarified, established, restored—basically did “more, save Jesus only, for the salvation of men in this world, than any other man that ever lived in it” (D&C 135:3)—certainly deserves the vast collection of tomes and our attention. The two-hundredth anniversary celebration should not only dwell on his life or who he was, but also focus on what he was…

…the Savior Himself contributes to the dialogue, establishing the final word on the matter that Joseph is His prophet. Combined, these three witnesses—the Prophet, those who knew him, and the Lord—serve to fulfill the law Paul describes in 2 Corinthians 13:1: “In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.” – Philip R. Webb

Deseret_Store_-_with_Tithing_Office_and_Deseret_News_additionToday we’re beginning a two part series on how vitally important Joseph Smith is to the corporation of the LDS Church, and the necessity of having him as the focus of everyday life for each member. Without Joseph Smith, members would have no means of gaining true salvation, and without Joseph Smith, the Church as a corporation would have no foundational basis to stand on.

The reason we’re doing this stems from the numerous articles they’ve published as of late. While perusing  their many media portals, magazines and websites for example, we couldn’t help but notice their heavy emphasis on commemorating Smith’s birth (December 23, 1805), while merely giving Jesus an honorable mention on occasion; when, or if needed.

Today’s example serves as a culmination of sorts, for all the many adjectives they believe Smith fulfilled by just being born. Before we look at the many ways Smith fulfilled most of the promises in the Bible, let’s step back and look at what God has to say about Himself.

Divorce Among Mormon Polygamists: Extent and Explanations, p. 9; “An interesting glimpse of this Wilford Woodruff 2period is provided by a letter from Wilford Woodruff to George A. Smith in April 1857: We George A Smithhave had a great reformation this winter; some of the fruits are: all have confessed their sins either great or small, restored their stolen property; all have been baptized from the presidency down; all are trying to pay their tithing and nearly all are trying to get wives, until there is hardly a girl 14 years old in Utah, but what is married, or just going to be. President Young has hardly time to eat, drink or sleep, in consequence of marrying the people and attending the endowments.” – Eugene E. Campbell and Bruce L. Campbell

friend-2015-decFriend, ‘Article of Faith 13,’ December 2015;

An activity lesson in this month’s edition of the LDS Friend Magazine caught my attention today.

The article challenged kids to memorize the 13th Article of Faith, which just so happens to be the longest of the 13 Articles of Faith. That in itself wasn’t the issue I had with it, as much as the way they emphasized two of the words in this particular article of faith.

New Era, ‘Why Do I Need to Know Joseph Smith Is a Prophet?,’ December 2015;

new-era-2015-decOn December 23, 1805, the founder of the LDS Church was born. His life’s work was arguably, one that affected more people than he ever dreamt of in his short thirty-nine years.

Although he was a busy guy, we should be ever mindful of what the Lord said in James 4:14!

“Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.”

This month the Church has employed the use of their many media outlets to broadcast, not only the birth of the Savior, but to remind people of their founder’s great purpose.

One of their magazines, the New Era, provided a dozen or so articles for LDS youth, and so we’re looking at a couple of them in the next few days. Their lessons focused on a number of topics from school to Jesus, and as we’ll see in this one, the life of Joseph Smith.

salt lake mormon temple 2Notwithstanding My Weakness, p. 55; “On the other side of the veil, there are perhaps seventy billion people. neal maxwellThey need the same gospel, and releases occur here to aid the Lord’s work there. Each release of a righteous individual from this life is also a call to new labors. Those who have true hope understand this.

Therefore, though we miss the departed righteous so much here, hundreds may feel their touch there. One day, those hundreds will thank the bereaved for gracefully forgoing the extended association with choice individuals here, in order that they could help hundreds there. In God’s ecology, talent and love are never wasted. The hopeful understand this, too.” – Neal A. Maxwell

Jeff Flake Senator and MormonIt’s not very often I check in on speeches our politicians give at the many events they attend. However, last week I made an exception when I came across a headline featuring a talk Senator Jeff Flake gave at a mosque in Scottsdale, AZ.

Some things Mr. Flake said in his speech served as another reminder of how Mormons like to compare themselves to the Islamic faith, so we’re looking at the article from Prescott News. We’re doing this not because of the recent incident in San Bernardino, rather, the article reminded us to bring attention to what they’re doing.

Our main question is why are they doing this?

The other issue we’re looking at is the truthfulness of what Mr. Flake said at this mosque. You can find our list of questions about comments made by Mr. Flake below. Text from the newspaper is in black font, our questions are in red.
