Stephen L. RichardsWhere Is Wisdom? p. 390; “…Intermarriage between members of these great racial divisions are possible, but the progeny are usually feeble, not long-lived, and of poor physical quality; and no permanent self-propagating, homogeneous races can be generated by such intermarriages. Hence these different classes of mankind amount in effect to a difference in species. … Then as regards language, there is a very important difference…The Negro languages are also simple and not adapted for conveying any but the simplest ideas and thoughts.” – Stephen L Richards, 1955

cross 12Today’s post comes courtesy of an article I saw on LDS Living. I’m going to post a few highlights from the article here, and then ask questions as we go along. One of the reasons we’re highlighting this article is to provide an example of what the average Mormon thinks of non-Mormon events.

LDS Living, ‘Why Mormons Don’t Practice Ash Wednesday and Lent’

“In the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saint we honor, and celebrate the life of Christ. We do not observe Ash Wednesday as it was instituted by man. We believe that we should always be repenting of sins we commit, and by partaking of the Sacrament weekly, we believe that doing this not only renews all of our covenants we have made with God, but it is the only way to renew any of our covenants. …

Luke 4:17-21; “And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, 18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. 20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.”

The Occult in Mormonism and the Life of Joseph SmithLiahona, ‘Commonly Asked Questions,’ October 2010; “Why is symbolism used in the temple?

During His earthly ministry, the Savior often taught in parables to represent eternal truths symbolically. He has directed that we be taught in a similar way in the temple. There is symbolism in the temple ordinances and covenants, their presentation, the physical setting, and the clothing worn. If you ponder the meaning of these symbols with the guidance of the Holy Ghost, they can help you recognize truth, learn about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, and grow spiritually.”

Matthew 6:25, 34; “Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? 34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.”

Food storage 4Today there are a few contradictions to look at in the LDS Liahona article below so let’s separate fact from fiction!

Liahona, ‘Questions and Answers,’ March 1983 –

Q. We have been counseled to store a year’s supply of food, clothing, and where possible, fuel. Can you explain what might be regarded as a discrepancy between this counsel and 3 Nephi 13:26? …

There is no discrepancy when the counsel from 3 Nephi 13:26 (“Behold the fowls of the air, for they sow not, neither do they reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them”) or Luke 12:22–34 are considered in context. …

boyd-k-packerEnsign, ‘Come to the Temple,’ February 1995; “No work is more of a protection to this church than temple work and the genealogical research that supports it. No work is more spiritually refining. No work we do gives us more power. No work requires a higher standard of righteousness.

Our labors in the temple cover us with a shield and a protection, both individually and as a people. So come to the temple—come and claim your blessings. It is a sacred work.” – Boyd K. Packer

Celestial Kingdom's Ordinance Waiting RoomChurch News, ‘Family History Blesses the Living as Well as the Dead,’ 24 February 2015;

“Building the family is at the center of the plan of salvation, the leaders taught. On the other side of the veil, individuals will be organized into families through ordinances that take place in temples. Because of the importance of those ordinances, it is essential that families work together to redeem their dead. Through modern technology advances family history has improved, allowing people of all ages to get involved with ease.”

Jer. 34:7; “When the king of Babylon’s army fought against Jerusalem, and against all the cities of Judah that were left, against Lachish, and against Azekah: for these defenced cities remained of the cities of Judah.”

Proceession Street of BabylonThe Bible verse above is a snapshot of real history. The snapshot from the Book of Mormon is anything but.

The Book of Mormon is replete with stories of the Nephites’ encounters with various trials and persecutions. One of the events worthy of exploration is the route Lehi and the family took leaving Jerusalem.

1 Corinthians 15:1-4; “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures”.

BoMToday we’re looking at one of the many times the Church has changed the text in the Book of Mormon. Be sure to ask a Mormon for their opinion about this!

flower 2The title of this month’s Visiting Teaching Message is ‘Marriage is Ordained of God’.

As most of you know, each month I find myself on my knees praying to sweet Jesus the next month’s message won’t be as bad, and much to my chagrin, somehow it’s the same, or even worse. Ugh.

Although this month’s message was pretty short, there were a few notable things to look at so we’re just going to jump right in, and ask questions as we go along.

1 Corinthians 8:4-6; “As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one. 5 For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,) 6 But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.”

bom.jpgToday we’re looking at a rather complicated, not to mention messy, timing problem in the ‘most correct book on the face of the earth, otherwise known as the Book of Mormon…According to LDS.org, the Nephite nation was killed off by the Lamanites circa 385 AD.

Mormon Chapter 6; “The Nephites gather to the land of Cumorah for the final battles—Mormon hides the sacred records in the hill Cumorah—The Lamanites are victorious, and the Nephite nation is destroyed—Hundreds of thousands are slain with the sword. About A.D. 385.”

Keep in mind, this also included Moroni’s dad, Mormon.

Apparently Moroni finished writing his dad’s excerpt for the Book of Mormon c. 401 AD. By this time his dad had already been dead for 15 years.

Mormon 8:3; “And my father also was killed by them, and I even remain alone to write the sad tale of the destruction of my people…” – 401-421 AD

Fast forward a chapter or so to Moroni 8:1 (c. 401-421 AD), and we find Moroni stating he received a letter from his dad, Mormon, shortly after he (Moroni) went into ministry.

Remember, this was fifteen years after his father supposedly died.

“An epistle of my father Mormon, written to me, Moroni; and it was written unto me soon after my calling to the ministry. And on this wise did he write unto me, saying…”

How did this happen?

Complicating matters further, we see another timing problem for Moroni and his dad. The following is still more of that letter where his dad is telling him (Moroni) the Nephites’ pride is what eventually killed them off.

Moroni 8:27; “Behold, my son, I will write unto you again if I go not out soon against the Lamanites. Behold, the pride of this nation, or the people of the Nephites, hath proven their destruction except they should repent.” About A.D. 401–421.

Again, how did this happen?

How could he talk if he was dead?

How would he know these things if he was already dead?

Why would he talk about the pride of the Nephite nation if they were already dead?

And last, but not least, notice three key phrases Mormon focused on in vss. 28-29 –

Moroni 8:28-29; “Pray for them, my son, that repentance may comeunto them. But behold, I fear lest the Spirit hath ceased striving with them; and in this part of the land they are also seeking to put down all power and authority which cometh from God; and they are denying the Holy Ghost. 29 And after rejecting so great a knowledge, my son, they must perish soon, unto the fulfilling of the prophecies which were spoken by the prophets, as well as the words of our Savior himself.” – c. 421 AD

The Nephites had been dead for 36 years so why would they need prayer for them to repent (v. 28)?

If they’d already been dead, why did Mormon state they must perish soon in v. 29?
