History of the Church 6:78; “Shall I, who have witnessed the visions of eternity, and beheld the glorious mansions of bliss, and the regions and the misery of the damned,—shall I turn to be a Judas? Shall I, who have heard the voice of God, and communed with angels, and spake as moved by the Holy Ghost for the renewal of the everlasting covenant, and for the gathering of Israel in the last days,—shall I worm myself into a political hypocrite? Shall I, who hold the keys of the last kingdom, in which is the dispensation of the fullness of all things spoken by the mouths of all the holy Prophets since the world began, under the sealing power of the Melchizedec Priesthood,—shall I stoop from the sublime authority of Almighty God, to be handled as a monkey’s cat-paw, and pettify myself into a clown to act the farce of political demagoguery? No—verily no! The whole earth shall bear me witness that I, like the towering rock in the midst of the ocean, which has withstood the mighty surges of the warring waves for centuries, am impregnable, and am a faithful friend to virtue, and a fearless foe to vice,—no odds whether the former was sold as a pearl in Asia or hid as a gem in America, and the latter dazzles in palaces or glimmers among the tombs.” – Joseph Smith, November 13, 1843

I told myself years ago that I wouldn’t be shocked anymore when I come across the outrageous things Mormon leaders say. Yeah well, I went against my own good advice and here we are today.
I remember what it was like growing up in Mormonism and feeling an overwhelming adoration and loyalty towards Joseph Smith. I vividly recall sitting in Sunday school and cringing as the teacher told us how Joseph Smith had been tarred and feathered.
E-mail: Why the LDS Church is True

Why the LDS Church is True
(According to an e-mail I received)
While I receive many e-mails for the ministry, one that caught my attention the most came from a Mormon a while back by the name of Shane. In his 15 page defense of the Church, a common theme ran throughout which has prompted this reply. I still use this e-mail as a response to other Mormons who write in with the exact copy & paste reasons the Church is true.
This Mormon took it upon himself to copy and paste a large section from the LDS website to let us know why the Church is true.
As the Christian will see, the reasoning he employs is lacking in spiritual maturity by using their (the LDS) defense. His spiritual condition doesn’t promote ridicule on our part, but once again begs for empathy from those of us who’ve walked the same path. It saddens me he can’t or won’t stop long enough to compile his own reasons for trusting the LDS Church. Instead it’s a copy and paste world in the minds of many Mormons. The way he responded also reminds me of a common response we see with many Mormons.
For instance, when asked where the proof is that someone like Nephi existed they’ll ask what proof there is the apostles existed. Instead of answering the question with definitive answer about Nephi, they attack the Bible.

Joseph God’s Only Appointed Translator?
D&C 124:25; “I give unto you my servant Joseph to be a presiding elder over all my church, to be a translator, a revelator, a seer, and prophet.”
D&C 107:91-92; “And again, the duty of the President of the office of the High Priesthood is to preside over the whole church, and to be like unto Moses—92 Behold, here is wisdom; yea, to be a seer, a revelator, a translator, and a prophet, having all the gifts of God which he bestows upon the head of the church.”

While the Mormon Church likes to yammer on how Smith was just an uneducated teenage farm boy from upstate New York, there’s a lot to be said about his wild imagination, and his seemingly insatiable appetite for books.
Over the years I’ve looked at more than a handful of “coincidences” from the Book of Mormon, and thought it’d be helpful to put them in one place for easy reference. So here’s a few of them to start us off, and as time permits I’ll be adding to the list, so check back often. The questions I have are most likely the same as yours!

Translation Problems in Book of Abraham
Ensign, “I’ve Got a Question”, July 1988, pg 51; “Why doesn’t the translation of the Egyptian papyri found in 1967 match the text of the Book of Abraham in the Pearl of Great Price?
The papyri in question are a part of the collection of Egyptian mummies and papyri that the Prophet Joseph Smith bought from Michael Chandler in 1835. After the Prophet’s death, the papyri were lost to the Church. But in 1966, Dr. Aziz S. Atiya, a professor of Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Utah, discovered some twenty-two separate papyri fragments in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, which were clearly part of Joseph Smith’s original collection.

Intelligence of Man Co-Equal w/ God
Latter-day Prophets Speak: Selections from the Sermons & Writings of Church Presidents, pg 3; “THE MIND or the intelligence which man possesses is co-equal with God Himself… Intelligence is eternal and exists upon a self-existent principle. It is a spirit from age to age, and there is no creation about it. – Joseph Smith, Jr., Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 353-354, April, 1844.”

The Self-Existent God of the Universe
The First 2000 Years, p. 355; “The universe is filled with vast numbers of intelligences, and we further learn that Elohim is God simply because all of these intelligences honor and sustain him as such…if He should ever do anything to violate the confidence or “sense of justice” of these intelligences, they would promptly withdraw their support, and the “power” of God would disintegrate. He would cease to be God.” – W. Cleon Skousen, Former BYU Professor

Four Corners of Earth or the Sons of Horus
While Joseph Smith was busy translating Egyptian hieroglyphs into the new Mormon word of God he was also busy prophesying to his group the end of the world was near. See D&C 104-105. This period of time in Mormonism was precarious indeed. There were lots of new prophecies of how some people would never die, how the world would soon come to an end and now Joseph was telling them God was speaking to them from the dust of the ground. Sadly for the Mormon people these prophecies also proved to be false as well.

Prophecy Written After the Fact
2 Nephi 3:14-15; “And thus prophesied Joseph, saying: Behold, that seer will the Lord bless; and they that seek to destroy him shall be confounded; for this promise, which I have obtained of the Lord, of the fruit of my loins, shall be fulfilled. Behold, I am sure of the fulfilling of this promise;
And his name shall be called after me; and it shall be after the name of his father. And he shall be like unto me; for the thing, which the Lord shall bring forth by his hand, by the power of the Lord shall bring my people unto salvation.”

Spiritual Discernment
What is it and from where does it come? When people write in asking how they can “get” spiritual discernment my answer is always the same; open your bible and start reading.
For those who say they don’t have spiritual discernment I have a question for you! Do you have His Holy Spirit residing inside you? Does He not guide you throughout your day? If so, how does He do this? Name the things He’s shown you in one day and give scriptural proof to back your claim.

Thought of the Day about Mormonism and the Multitude that Fell to the Earth
3 Nephi 11:12; “And it came to pass that when Jesus had spoken these words the whole multitude fell to the earth; for they remembered that it had been prophesied among them that Christ should show himself unto them after his ascension into heaven.” – 34 AD

Thought of the Day
How did this happen?
The book of 3rd Nephi was supposedly written circa 34 AD.
The book of Malachi was written circa 443 BC.
If this was truly from God how did the Nephites get this info somewhere in the Americas when Malachi lived in Israel? There was no internet, no phones…how did this happen?
And if the Mormon Church believes the word of God is tainted and not translated correctly then why are they plagiarizing it?
Furthermore, how can they believe this is true when in fact they don’t believe it is? This contradicts the theory that God was once a man!
Oh what a tangled web we weave…
3 Nephi 24:6; “For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.”
Malachi 3:6; “For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.”

The Many gods of Mormonism
D&C 121:25-28; “For there is a time appointed for every man, according as his works shall be. 26 God shall give unto you knowledge by his Holy Spirit, yea, by the unspeakable gift of the Holy Ghost, that has not been revealed since the world was until now; 27 Which our forefathers have awaited with anxious expectation to be revealed in the last times, which their minds were pointed to by the angels, as held in reserve for the fulness of their glory; 28 A time to come in the which nothing shall be withheld, whether there be one God or many gods, they shall be manifest.”
