Studying the Book of Mormon 10

 Boston Courier.
Vol. VI.                           Boston, Ma., Thursday, March 17, 1831.                           No. 545.

DELUSION. There is no end to trickery and imposture in our land. “Fools are the game which knaves pursue,” and until the people in some sections of the country become more enlightened, there will be plenty of game.

The newspaper headline above provides insight to what most people thought of Joseph Smith and his shenanigans.  This edition of the Boston Courier was fascinating.  We are able to see how the early Mormon Church was able to grow and to what extent the surrounding townsfolk tolerated this movement.  Most didn’t put up with it, while others were able to be tricked into their schemes.  At one point a Methodist church had Rigdon and a few others come in and actually preach at the pulpit – the entire congregation left God and signed up to become Mormon.

Mormon 9:32-33; “And now, behold, we have written this record according to our knowledge, in the characters which are called among us the reformed Egyptian, being handed down and altered by us, according to our manner of speech.  33 And if our plates had been sufficiently large we should have written in Hebrew; but the Hebrew hath been altered by us also; and if we could have written in Hebrew, behold, ye would have had no imperfection in our record.

The passage above is a good example of how the Church makes excuses for the way they believe.  Does it make sense they’ve altered the Hebrew or Reformed Egyptian?  His explanation reminds me of what the con artist tries to pull off at carnivals.  He puts the prize under the shell and mixes them around; if you find it, you win.

Tragically, the unfound prize in this game is the salvation in Jesus that Mormons are so desperately seeking.  The Mormon god keeps changing the rules; the people writing the story changed the language and the members won’t change their minds about whom they hold allegiance to.

The entire Book of Mormon (not just this particular book) is difficult to follow or assign a central theme to because of the miserable way it’s been written.   The writing of Moroni in the Book of Mormon is no exception to this finding.  They purposely introduce off topic items in order to confuse.  Because of this, I’ve chosen to list several items of interest that actually hurts the storyline instead of adding to the message it was originally intended to convey.  If it’s to be a cohesive piece of work why is there so much garbage in its text?

I’ve not written my analysis this way to confuse, but to spark an objective thinking process about Joseph Smith and his claim about the characters in this book.

If you’re LDS, know that we pray for you each and every day.  We so want for you to know the Jesus in the Bible and dedicate your passion to Him who holds the truth.

 With Love in Christ;

 Events Worth Questioning

1:7; “The whole face of the land had become covered with buildings, and the people were as numerous almost, as it were the sand of the sea.

Think about the above scenario for a moment.  The entire face of the land was covered with buildings – and they still haven’t found even one piece of archaeological evidence…

If there were almost as many people on the face of the land as there were grains of sand, how did they all fit?  As a side note, there are approximately 10,000 grains of medium-coarse sand per cubic inch…

God wouldn’t let Mormon preach

When has God ever told people not to speak about Him?

Mormon 1:17; “But I did remain among them, but I was forbidden to preach unto them, because of the hardness of their hearts…

 Fighting for Democracy and Liberty

Modern democracy like America knows it didn’t come about until the Declaration of Independence in 1776.  While forms of living in a “free world” made half hearted attempts and brief appearances as early as the Greco-Roman Empire and again in 1215 with the advent of the Magna Carta, this thought process and governmental system wasn’t in existence until centuries after the Book of Mormon was supposed to have taken place.

Mormon 2:23; “And it came to pass that I did speak unto my people, and did urge them with great energy, that they would stand boldly before the Lamanites and fight for their wives, and their children, and their houses, and their homes.

If you believe in God why are you without hope?

Mormon 5:2; “But behold, I was without hope, for I knew the judgments of the Lord which should come upon them; for they repented not of their iniquities, but did struggle for their lives without calling upon that Being who created them.

 Were the Nephites evil?

Mormon 6:7; “And it came to pass that my people, with their wives and their children, did now behold the armies of the Lamanites marching towards them; and with that awful fear of death which fills the breasts of all the wicked, did they await to receive them.

If you believe in God, why are you using the terminology of witches?

Mormon 6:15; “…and blood lay upon the face of the earth, being left by the hands of those who slew them to molder upon the land, and to crumble and to return to their mother earth.

Why is the destruction of the Nephites “great and marvelous”?

Mormon 8:7; “And behold, the Lamanites have hunted my people, the Nephites, down from city to city and from place to place, even until they are no more; and great has been their fall; yea, great and marvelous is the destruction of my people, the Nephites.

 Modern day Mormon theology

In order to receive a full and true salvation members of the LDS Church must subject themselves to a bishop’s interview.  It is there the bishop will ask the member if their spiritual lives are in order and that means paying a full 10% tithe of your gross income.  You turn in your W-2 and if you don’t comply, you don’t receive the coveted Mormon temple recommend.  The end of each year brings with it a “tithing settlement” you make with the ward (congregation) you belong to.

Mormon 8:32; “Yea, it shall come in a day when there shall be churches built up that shall say: Come unto me, and for your money you shall be forgiven of your sins.

 Incorrect teaching in Mormon

The Mormon teaching below is disingenuous.  Yes, we can be resurrected because Jesus was resurrected after His death.  However, Jesus’ death brought about forgiveness of our sins, alas, that is something the Mormons don’t like to talk about.

Romans 4:25; “Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

Mormon 9:13; “…because the death of Christ bringeth to pass the resurrection…

Not enough room to tell whole story because they’ve changed the languages

I’ve often wondered why they didn’t just write in Hebrew to begin with.  Where did this “Reformed Egyptian” stuff come from anyway?  Who told them to write in this manner?  Who taught the Nephites this language if they didn’t go into Egypt in their exodus from Jerusalem?  Why did the author(s) waste so much space on their plates with nonsensical information like the examples above?  (Number of years passed, bad grammar, “and it came to pass” phrases used repetitively, plagiarisms from the Bible, et al.)

No one but Smith knows Reformed Egyptian

 How convenient…

Mormon 9:34; “But the Lord knoweth the things which we have written, and also that none other people knoweth our language; and because that none other people knoweth our language, therefore he hath prepared means for the interpretation thereof.

How do you rid your clothes of the blood of unbelievers?

Mormon 9:35; “And these things are written that we may rid our garments of the blood of our brethren, who have dwindled in unbelief.

And finally – if there were so many Nephites in this army of 42,000 and 30,000, etc., what in the world happened to all of them?  Where are they, how did they die, where are their families….where is the archaeological evidence of these people?

Bishops and Young Women in the Ward

My Endless List of Questions in the Ongoing Saga of Nephi

Plagiarism:  the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one’s own original work.

www.dictionary.com

3 Nephi 1:14; “Behold, I come unto my own, to fulfil all things which I have made known unto the children of men from the foundation of the world, and to do the will, both of the Father and of the Son—of the Father because of me, and of the Son because of my flesh. And behold, the time is at hand, and this night shall the sign be given.”

If anyone knows what the verse above actually means and can explain it to me, I’d love to hear from you!  The quote comes from “the voice of the Lord”.

The story of third Nephi opens up repeating some of the things Helaman told us about at the end of his book.  This particular book has been called “the holies of the holies of the Book of Mormon” (John Welch, Maxwell Institute) and looked upon as the best literary work of the Church, rivaling the writings of Isaiah.

This time around we’re going to be listing the main events with a list of question at the end of each chapter for the Mormon to ask themselves in their private time.  I’m praying the questions will spark further investigation of what their god is all about and whether or not he’s worthy of their adoration.

Chapter One Theme

The main theme in the first chapter is undoubtedly the birth of Jesus Christ.  But there are glaring questions that need to be asked.

Where did the father of Nephi go and why did he leave his family?  What purpose does this serve in glorifying God or learning more about Him (1:3)?  Did his family go out looking for him?  If he was a man of God why would he do this?  The man is the only source of money to the family in ancient societies so why would he just up and leave his wife like this?

Why Smith felt it necessary to tell his readers the dark people had to set aside a day to kill the white and delightsome people is very telling.  There’s really no reason for that verse as it doesn’t glorify God or promote a holy atmosphere.  (1:9)

What it does promote is further mistrust and hatred for those who don’t think like you do.

Why isn’t the focus of their scripture about the miracle of Jesus’ birth and how awesome it is their Redeemer has come to rescue them?  What about all the specific prophecies His birth fulfilled?  Since those Nephites supposedly had all the writings of their fathers, it shouldn’t be too difficult to drag them out and look, right?

Who is the guy talking from the clouds in v. 14?  The Mormons don’t believe in the Trinity.  This verse has to be at the top of the list for the absurd.  Honestly people…

Why are they baptizing people in 3 AD?  Jesus would’ve been about 7 yrs old around that time…  (1:25)

 Chapter Two Theme

“And this ended the _____ year”…

Most of the nineteen verses in this chapter are riddled with the repeated phrase of how many years had passed away.  How does this point to God and what does he want for you to learn from it?

What is the doctrine of Christ spoken of in 2:2?  More contentions arose from the bad guys leading people away from the Lord.

Is it reasonable that people living in Mesoamerica would be worried about their “liberties of their church and worship and their freedoms”?  (2:12)

Do you honestly believe God would change the color of someone’s skin because they became righteous?  (2:15)

If you’re African American, Mexican, Peruvian or Asian are you still dark now that you’re considered righteous?

 Chapter Three Theme

Epistles of Governor Lachoneus’ and Giddianhi the Chieftain Robber

How did the governor end up with a Greek sounding name in Mesoamerica in 15 AD?

Do you really believe that a band of thugs are going to be sending the governor an detailed “epistle” and use vocabulary in this manner?

“And behold, I am Giddianhi; and I am the governor of this the secret society of Gadianton; which society and the works thereof I know to be good…And I write this epistle unto you, Lachoneus, and I hope that ye will deliver up your lands and your possessions, without the shedding of blood, that this my people may recover their rights and government, who have dissented away from you because of your wickedness in retaining from them their rights of government, and except ye do this, I will avenge their wrongs. I am Giddianhi.”  (vs. 9-10)

Lachoneus delivers marvelous prophecies to the Gadianton robbers to surrender and “so great” were his words that it caused fear to come upon the Gadiantons.  Really?  What all did he say that it caused so much fear and is this really believable?

3 Nephi 3:22 lists most all of the things that didn’t exist in Mesoamerica at that time and claims they marched to the appointed place to wait for a battle with the robbers.  Chariots, grain, cattle, herds and horses were only existent in the mind of Joseph Smith.

The other problem with this claim is how many people Smith claims was there.  Tens of thousands…yet not one single shred of any archaeological evidence has been found.

 Chapter Four Theme

The Greatest Slaughter and Giddianhi’s Death

Other than the slaughters being so great and the horrible grammar used in this chapter, the most remarkable event we learned of was the use of the word “scantiness”.  True story.  The etymology of this word only goes back to the early 17th Century.  Why is it in the Book of Mormon in 21 AD?  (4:19)

The only other thing worthy of mention was the last two verses when the Nephites were victorious over the robbers.  The way this event is phrased makes it laughable if it wasn’t so sad.  Why do the Mormon people believe this?

3 Nephi 4:32-33; “Yea, they did cry: Hosanna to the Most High God. And they did cry: Blessed be the name of the Lord God Almighty, the Most High God.  33 And their hearts were swollen with joy, unto the gushing out of many tears, because of the great goodness of God in delivering them out of the hands of their enemies; and they knew it was because of their repentance and their humility that they had been delivered from an everlasting destruction.

 Chapter Five Theme

Supposed Allusion to the Gathering of Israel

Is it reasonable to believe that not one single Nephite doubted the prophets?  Not one.  (5:1)

Did every single Nephite really forsake all their sins (5:3)?  This claim would mean tens of thousands of people were perfect.

 If the Book of Mormon was really written on brass plates, how did Nephi have the room to write this in verse seven;

“And thus had the twenty and second year passed away, and the twenty and third year also, and the twenty and fourth, and the twenty and fifth; and thus had twenty and five years passed away.

The very next verse we’re told that so many things happened they couldn’t all be written.  Okay, so you have the time, space and energy to write the verse above, but you can’t tell us about the miracles?  It also used the phrase from the Apostle John again… “…this book cannot contain even a hundredth part of what was done among so many people in the space of twenty and five years.”  John wrote that circa 90 AD.

In 5:13 Mormon tells us he’s a disciple of Jesus Christ but that’d be kind of hard to do since Jesus wasn’t out on the mission field yet.  It’s 21 AD.

We find in 3 Nephi 5:18-19 how Mormon tells us that his work isn’t from God, but himself.

“And I know the record which I make to be a just and a true record; nevertheless there are many things which, according to our language, we are not able to write.  19 And now I make an end of my saying, which is of myself, and proceed to give my account of the things which have been before me.

The next verse makes it sound like he’s a breed of an animal or something.  What in the world is a “pure descendant”?

“I am Mormon, and a pure descendant of Lehi…

Is that opposed to a fake descendant?

 Chapter Six Theme

The Pretended Appearance of God’s Presence

 If these prophets don’t have the time, space or materials to write everything down, why do they continually have to repeat themselves in their writings?  3 Nephi 6:2;

“…and they did return to their own lands and their possessions, both on the north and on the south, both on the land northward and on the land southward.

To back track one verse, you’ll see that they also have a problem remembering that cattle and horses still weren’t available to the Americas in 30 AD.

1 John 4:4 says; “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

I’m convinced Joseph didn’t understand how the Holy Spirit works in the hearts of true believers.  Smith’s obvious hatred for God shows up in the repetitive stories of how God failed the people time and again.  God doesn’t fail, people do.

John 14:16-18; “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. 18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

The building up of the church, the contentions and then continual peace times back and forth are proof that God did not exist with these people.  They only lived in the imagination of Joseph Smith’s mind.

From verses 10 – 30 is one of many examples that Smith made this whole thing up.  The church broke up then got back together…

 Chapter Seven Theme

 Pathetically Uninspired

My Book of Mormon chapter headings says this chapter contains Nephi’s powerful ministry.  I would find it difficult at best that Nephi could do anything if their god can’t deliver on his promises.  Be that as it may, there are also other uninspiring events to take a look at in this chapter.  3 Nephi 7:8 is plagiarized from 2 Peter 2:22, but with a twist of Smith’s grammar problem thrown into the mix.

“And thus six years had not passed away since the more part of the people had turned from their righteousness, like the dog to his vomit, or like the sow to her wallowing in the mire.

 In 7:17-19 it tells us again too many things happened to write them in their books.  It also tells us of Joseph’s obsession with angels because angels administered to Nephi on a daily basis and then we’re told of Nephi’s power to raise someone from the dead.  Just out of the blue, no background, no recorded witnesses, no proof, no reason why the person died, nothing.  And then just as a reminder this is not an inspired work of God, the chapter ends with this;

“And there were many in the commencement of this year that were baptized unto repentance; and thus the more part of the year did pass away.

Chapter Eight Theme

Nephi’s Perfection and Three Days of Darkness with the Crucifixion

3 Nephi 8:1; “And now it came to pass that according to our record, and we know our record to be true, for behold, it was a just man who did keep the record—for he truly did many miracles in the name of Jesus; and there was not any man who could do a miracle in the name of Jesus save he were cleansed every whit from his iniquity—

Somehow the Mormon god just can’t seem to get any good men but Nephi to serve in his army.  Additionally, notice how the prophet Mormon has to remind people that their writings are true.  Who was this meant for?

3 Nephi 8:3; And the people began to look with great earnestness for the sign which had been given by the prophet Samuel, the Lamanite, yea, for the time that there should be darkness for the space of three days over the face of the land.

Mark 15:33; And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.

This is a classic example of how the Book of Mormon is not inspired of God.

See our article on Life After Ministry blog for 1,000 Reasons to Leave the Mormon Church.  Look under the topic of crucifixion for our insight above.

http://lifeafterministry.com/2010/10/01/reasons-starting-with-c

In 8:18 they use the term “rent in twain” again.  This time they were talking about their rocks.

In 8:21-22 it says the darkness over the earth was so great they couldn’t even light campfires.  Nothing but continual weeping and how they could “feel the vapor of darkness (vs. 20).

The majority of this chapter is filled with horrific events of God destroying the earth in cataclysmic earthquakes at the time of Jesus’ death some 5,600+ miles away.  Again they mention the earth was darkened for three days (8:23), people were killed and there were “thunderings and lightening”.

Some Book of Mormon apologists have claimed that as many as 70,000 to 90,000 people died during the three days of darkness and earthquakes that took place when Jesus was crucified.

How do you explain John 10:10?

“The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

 Chapter Nine Theme

Plagiarisms Abound in Jesus’ Travels to the Americas

Just one question about 9:13.  If the survivors Jesus is talking to are more righteous than those who died why are they told to repent?  Wouldn’t they have already done that?

Here’s a list of the bible verses they plagiarized and the verses from the Book of Mormon they used them in.

3 Nephi 9:13 and John 12:40; “…and be converted, that I may heal you.”

3 Nephi 9:15:Behold, I am Jesus Christ the Son of God. I created the heavens and the earth, and all things that in them are. I was with the Father from the beginning. I am in the Father, and the Father in me; and in me hath the Father glorified his name.

John 1:2-3; “The same was in the beginning with God.  All things were made by him…

John 14:11, 13; “Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me… that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

3 Nephi 9:16; I came unto my own, and my own received me not. And the scriptures concerning my coming are fulfilled.

John 1:11; “He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

3 Nephi 9:17; And as many as have received me, to them have I given to become the sons of God; and even so will I to as many as shall believe on my name, for behold, by me redemption cometh, and in me is the law of Moses fulfilled.

John 1:12, 17; “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name…For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

Also see Luke 24:44; John 15:25; Matthew 5:17…

3 Nephi 9:18; I am the light and the life of the world. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.

John 1:4, 8:12; “In him was life; and the life was the light of men… Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

Revelation 22:13; “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end…

Why were the Nephites speaking Greek?  Apha and Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet.  Joseph Smith said the Book of Mormon contained no Greek or Latin.  See our article about the Greek and Latin words in the Book of Mormon here:

http://www.lifeafter.org/greek.asp

3 Nephi 9:19-20; And ye shall offer up unto me no more the shedding of blood; yea, your sacrifices and your burnt offerings shall be done away, for I will accept none of your sacrifices and your burnt offerings. And ye shall offer for a sacrifice unto me a broken heart and a contrite spirit. And whoso cometh unto me with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, him will I baptize with fire and with the Holy Ghost…

Psalm 51:16-17; “For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.  The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

 And finally –

3 Nephi 9:22; Therefore, whoso repenteth and cometh unto me as a little child, him will I receive, for of such is the kingdom of God. Behold, for such I have laid down my life, and have taken it up again; therefore repent, and come unto me ye ends of the earth, and be saved.

Luke 18:16; “But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.

John 10:18; “No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself…

Isaiah 45:22; Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.

Isn’t it ironic they’d quote this verse and not believe it?  How sad for those who trust in Joseph Smith.

They plagiarized the bible 17 times in 8 verses.

 Chapter Ten Theme

Jesus’ Repeated Saying of a Hen and Her Chickens

Everybody hears a voice from the sky.  Really?

3 Nephi 10:12 gives an outrageous story of how the earth and its inhabitants behave.  Check this out.

“And the earth did cleave together again, that it stood; and the mourning, and the weeping, and the wailing of the people who were spared alive did cease; and their mourning was turned into joy, and their lamentations into the praise and thanksgiving unto the Lord Jesus Christ, their Redeemer.

The above verse and the last verse of this chapter is the only thing worthy of mention.  In the last verse Jesus shows his resurrected body to the believers.

 Chapter Eleven Theme

The Sky Voice Comes Again and a Multitude of People Thrust Hands into Jesus

In 11:1 the voice from the sky makes another appearance but no one understands it this time around.  Just two verses later they still don’t understand the “small voice”.

In verse four they heard the voice again and in verse five they heard it a third time.  I guess the third time’s a charm because they finally caught on in verse six and it just so happens that God is paraphrasing Matthew 17:5.

3 Nephi 11:7; “Behold my Beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased, in whom I have glorified my name—hear ye him.

Hey, wait a minute…isn’t that what the exalted god told Smith in the grove of trees?

Joseph Smith Testimony 1:17; “It no sooner appeared than I found myself delivered from the enemy which held me bound. When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other—This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!

 Hmmm…

In verses 9-11 Jesus makes his curtain call and reveals to the people that he’s all that and more while paraphrasing John 1:4, 8:12 and 17:4.  Immediately afterwards the entire crowd falls to the earth from shock.

For the second time we see another verse that would be hilarious if not for the fact that people like my own mother actually believes this stuff.

3 Nephi 11:15; “And it came to pass that the multitude went forth, and thrust their hands into his side, and did feel the prints of the nails in his hands and in his feet; and this they did do, going forth one by one until they had all gone forth, and did see with their eyes and did feel with their hands, and did know of a surety and did bear record, that it was he, of whom it was written by the prophets, that should come.

3 Nephi 11:25 “borrows” from Matthew 28:19 which is the Great Commission.  And two verses later they’re copying from 1 John 5:7, John 10:30 and John 14:11.

3 Nephi 11:28 says that anyone who disagrees with the establishment is of the devil.  Don’t even think about having your own opinion.  You will obey.

If you think that’s bad, just wait, there’s more.  From 11:32-40 you will find they’ve plagiarized the Bible 11 more times.  We’re listing only one example here.

 3 Nephi 11:39 plagiarizes Matthew 16:16 when it says;

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, that this is my doctrine, and whoso buildeth upon this buildeth upon my rock, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against them.

This chapter should be confusing for the Mormon people.  The text declares that Jesus is God and the gates of hell won’t prevail against the body of Christ.  Mormons emphatically denounce these two fundamentals of the Christian faith.  Why they’d use these verses is beyond me.

 Chapter Twelve Theme

Sermon on the Mount in the Americas and the 12 Nephite Apostles

This entire chapter with the exception of four verses is plagiarized from the Bible.

 Chapter Thirteen Theme

Plagiarizing Matthew 6

This chapter is word for word from Matthew chapter six.  I just have one question.

In 13:24 it says no man can serve two masters for he will hate the one and love the other…

Hasn’t anyone in the Church figured this out yet?  Their love of Joseph has caused them to hate Jesus.

All right, I changed my mind.  Why don’t they believe their own writings?  In 13:31 it says not to worry about food or clothing.  What’s up with the food storage?

 Chapter Fourteen Theme

The Mormon Jesus’ Continued Plagiarisms – Matthew 7

This chapter is twenty seven verses long and has been copied verbatim from Matthew chapter seven.

I asked a Mormon once if they’d believe the Bible if it said exactly the same thing that the Book of Mormon did.  Their answer?  Absolutely not.  They’d only believe the teaching if it was in the Book of Mormon.

 Chapter Fifteen Theme

 The Other Sheep

The main thing I’d want to convey to the Mormons in this chapter is to set the record straight about the other sheep that Jesus spoke of in the Bible.  The other sheep are not the Nephites, Jaredites, Lamanites or Zoramites in the Book of Mormon.

The other sheep He was referring to in the Bible are the Gentiles.  Show your Mormon friends and loved ones the truth next time you have the opportunity.  John 10:16.

3 Nephi 15:13 changes the whole scheme of things for the Jews.  America has now become the land of their inheritance.

In 15:15 they repeat the lie about receiving a commandment from God to leave Jerusalem.  See Jeremiah 42:10-17.

 Chapter Sixteen Theme

The Other Sheep are the Gentiles!

Not much happens here but the rhetoric of the Mormon Jesus talking about the Gentiles who believe in him.  From 16:18-20 is the repeating of Isaiah 52:8-10.

 Chapter Seventeen Theme

Jesus Heals the Children and Leaves to Search for the Lost Ten Tribes

There are just a couple of things to look at here.

In 17:1 the Mormon Jesus tells the crowd his time was at hand.  As a clarification here – Jesus’ time was at the crucifixion.

In verse four he tells them he’s gotta go talk to the lost ten tribes.  Nowhere in the Bible does it mention a “lost ten tribes of Israel”.  This theory was popular in the days of Joseph Smith.  Ethan Smith (no relation) wrote a novel called “View of the Hebrews”.  The premise of the story was that the Native American people were from the Israelites.

 Chapter Eighteen Theme

 Gorging on the Sacrament

After filling themselves from the bread and wine a dark cloud came and overshadowed all the people.  When the cloud disappeared Jesus had vanished.  Maybe the dark ominous cloud was a sign they were doing things wrong?

While plagiarizing the Bible on numerous occasions through this chapter it’s important to point out to the Mormon the significance of the elements taken at communion.

 The LDS Church has used water for the past 150 years or so and in doing so has watered down the true meaning of partaking the elements.  The other area that has dumbed down the thinking in this genre is believing Jesus paid the price for sin in the Garden of Gethsemane.  In 18:7 it says;

“And this shall ye do in remembrance of my body, which I have shown unto you…

 Compare that to what Paul said in 1 Corinthians 11:24;

“And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.

Jesus’ body was broken and given for them and us – not shown to them.

 Chapter Nineteen Theme

Raising the Dead and the Race Issue

Wow!  They opened up this story with the news that every man took his wife and kids and went home.

It wasn’t long after the “translation” when Joe started his polygamy practices – 1831 to be exact.

In 19:4 Smith uses the Greek names of Timothy (the guy who was raised from the dead) and Jonas which is the Greek form of Jonah.

In verse 18 they’re praying to Jesus which is something the Mormons of today are forbidden to do.  See Bruce McConkie’s speech in March 1982 when he clearly states that praying to Jesus is wrong.

Joseph’s “countenance” and obsession with white folks shines forth loud and clear when he describes the people who are righteous.

3 Nephi 19:25; “And it came to pass that Jesus blessed them as they did pray unto him; and his countenance did smile upon them, and the light of his countenance did shine upon them, and behold they were as white as the countenance and also the garments of Jesus

It’s repeated again in 19:30 that only the righteous are white.

The very last verse is another bad habit of Joseph’s which he passed down to his believers.  No one has greater faith than they do.  No one has seen or heard the things they have…

 Chapter Twenty Theme

 Communion Problems…Again…

This chapter makes Jesus sound like a magician.  The disciples were hungry again but had no bread or wine (vs. 6).  Lo and behold, in the next verse Jesus gave some to them.

Just a few verses later we’re told that when they ate and drank they were filled with the Holy Ghost (vs. 9).

Unbelievers are those who don’t have the companionship of the Holy Spirit.  Why were they partaking of the elements?

20:16-18 is taken from Micah chapter 5.

 20:18-20 is Micah chapter 4.

20:23-26 is taken from Acts chapter 3.

3 Nephi 20:38 says you can get saved without money.  In the Mormon Church of today that’s not possible.  At the end of each year the Mormons go to a “tithing settlement”.  If you don’t give at least ten percent of your gross income you can pay up in January or not get the needed temple recommend.

The rest of the chapter from 20:32-45 is taken from Isaiah chapter 52.

 Chapter Twenty One Theme

The Ongoing Grammar Problems of Joseph Smith…

3 Nephi 21:11; “Therefore it shall come to pass that whosoever will not believe in my words, who am Jesus Christ…

The verse above is just one example of the problem Joseph had with spelling, grammar and editing.  It’s also a sign of the other people he kept company with – no one was very educated.

3 Nephi 21:2-7 should be pointed out to your Mormon friend.  It is one sentence.

“And behold, this is the thing which I will give unto you for a sign—for verily I say unto you that when these things which I declare unto you, and which I shall declare unto you hereafter of myself, and by the power of the Holy Ghost which shall be given unto you of the Father, shall be made known unto the Gentiles that they may know concerning this people who are a remnant of the house of Jacob, and concerning this my people who shall be scattered by them; 3 Verily, verily, I say unto you, when these things shall be made known unto them of the Father, and shall come forth of the Father, from them unto you; 4 For it is wisdom in the Father that they should be established in this land, and be set up as a free people by the power of the Father, that these things might come forth from them unto a remnant of your seed, that the covenant of the Father may be fulfilled which he hath covenanted with his people, O house of Israel;  5 Therefore, when these works and the works which shall be wrought among you hereafter shall come forth from the Gentiles, unto your seed which shall dwindle in unbelief because of iniquity; 6 For thus it behooveth the Father that it should come forth from the Gentiles, that he may show forth his power unto the Gentiles, for this cause that the Gentiles, if they will not harden their hearts, that they may repent and come unto me and be baptized in my name and know of the true points of my doctrine, that they may be numbered among my people, O house of Israel; 7 And when these things come to pass that thy seed shall begin to know these things—it shall be a sign unto them, that they may know that the work of the Father hath already commenced unto the fulfilling of the covenant which he hath made unto the people who are of the house of Israel.

The chapter consists of Jesus telling the Nephites he will save the Gentiles and gather the lost tribes of Israel that he dispersed out of Jerusalem.  Remember, in the Bible this is exactly the opposite of what God told the Israelites to do – Jer. 42:10-17.

In 21:8-9 we find copying of Isaiah chapters 52 & 29 and in 21:12-19 are plagiarisms from Micah 5 again.

 Chapter Twenty Two Theme

 Plagiarizing Isaiah 54

This entire chapter is Isaiah 54.

 Chapter Twenty Three Theme

Jesus Wants Nephite Records to be Included

3 Nephi 23:7-9 take the number one spot for stupid things to write.

“And it came to pass that he said unto Nephi: Bring forth the record which ye have kept.  8 And when Nephi had brought forth the records, and laid them before him, he cast his eyes upon them and said: 9 Verily I say unto you, I commanded my servant Samuel, the Lamanite, that he should testify unto this people, that at the day that the Father should glorify his name in me that there were many saints who should arise from the dead, and should appear unto many, and should minister unto them. And he said unto them: Was it not so?

Okay, so Jesus tells Nephi to bring him the records and sacred writings.  Nephi lays them at Jesus’ feet.  Jesus takes a look at them, and summarily tells Nephi he left out some parts so they needed to be added to their text about Samuel the Lamanite.

 Honestly…

 Chapter Twenty Four Theme

 Plagiarizing Malachi chapter 3

This entire chapter is from Malachi 3.

 Chapter Twenty Five Theme

 Plagiarizing Malachi chapter 4

This entire chapter is from Malachi 4.

 Chapter Twenty Six Theme

Jesus  Plays the Part of a Courier and Delivers Scriptures from the Father

So after they’ve quoted extensively from Malachi Jesus finally tells Nephi and company that he has scriptures God the Father wanted him to hand deliver?  This is so strange (26:2)…

The rest of this chapter is more plagiarizing from 2 Peter, Revelations, 2 Corinthians, Acts and the gospel of John.  Nephi tells us that not everything can be written down and Jesus told them God will judge their works.

26:7-8 was written to confuse.  I am convinced Satan used Smith to confuse these people of Mormonism and to dumb down the masses.  He played Smith like a fiddle.

“But behold the plates of Nephi do contain the more part of the things which he taught the people.  8 And these things have I written, which are a lesser part of the things which he taught the people; and I have written them to the intent that they may be brought again unto this people, from the Gentiles, according to the words which Jesus hath spoken.

In verse 11 God supposedly told Mormon not to write all the things they needed to know because he wanted to try the people and test their faith.

If that verse isn’t scary enough to make you want to run the other way I don’t know what is.

In verse 15 Jesus ascended for the 2nd time.  Does this mean no one was raptured???

What do they think of Jesus’ real 2nd coming?

Verse 18 can’t be spoken about.

 Chapter Twenty Seven Theme

Jesus’ Third Appearance and the Name of the Church

In 27:5 Jesus tells the Nephites they have to name the Church after him with his name in it.

“Have they not read the scriptures, which say ye must take upon you the name of Christ, which is my name? For by this name shall ye be called at the last day.

3 Nephi 27:6 is the martyr call for every single Mormon…“endure to the end….

And the next few verses Jesus is reminding them again to name the church after him (vs. 7-9).

3 Nephi 27:14 is a maze of lies.

“And my Father sent me that I might be lifted up upon the cross; and after that I had been lifted up upon the cross, that I might draw all men unto me, that as I have been lifted up by men even so should men be lifted up by the Father, to stand before me, to be judged of their works, whether they be good or whether they be evil—

The only people who were judged by their works were the Israelites before Jesus came to die for our sins.  Today if you don’t believe in Him you will be judged by your works.  That is why Jesus went to the Calvary and paid the price for our sin on the Cross.  You will not be judged by your works for salvation if you’re a believer.  The Mormons don’t believe Jesus died on the cross to draw mankind to himself.  They believe he paid that price in the Garden of Gethsemane.

In 27:29 Smith has plagiarized Matthew 7:7.

Smith shows again that he doesn’t understand how God operates.  In verses 31- 32 he tells the crowd that everyone in their generation is saved, but watch out because four generations after them they won’t be.  He tells them that the fourth generation will be selling him for silver and gold.

How could this be?  How could they sell Jesus if He’s already risen and sitting on the right hand of God?

 Chapter Twenty Eight Theme

Jesus Promises Life Until Age 72…for Most of Them

This is the infamous chapter where Smith claimed the three Nephites didn’t taste death.  According to Mormon legend, they’re still wandering the earth somewhere.  If this were true, why was there a complete and utter apostasy?  Why weren’t those three Nephites out pounding pavement to see people saved?

In verses 19-22 we find out the prisons can’t hold the Nephite believers, furnaces can’t burn them and wild beasts can’t tear them apart.  Again, the stories always have to be bigger and better than the Bible.

In 28:26 Mormon tells us they’ve appeared to him but he’s not allowed to name names.  Ahh, that’s convenient…

 Chapter Twenty Nine Theme

Mormon Warns Unbelievers they’re Like the Son of Perdition

Remember, don’t think for yourself or have your own  opinion.

 Chapter Thirty Theme

 The Condemnation of the Gentile

The only thing worth mentioning in the two verses of this chapter is that all Gentiles are damned.

 If you’re not a Mormon you’re a Gentile.

Please, please pray for a Mormon today won’t you?

Nephi’s Reign

The twenty-fifth Psalm of David is a heart cry to the Lord to forgive him of his sin as well as a profession of his faith in the Lord who always gives comfort and direction.  King David obviously made some mistakes in life, of this there is no doubt.  However, we also see there is hope in his life story because of the mercy of God, His forgiveness and the timeless lesson of obedience for us.  The main lesson I got out of this Psalm was to wait upon the Lord no matter how long I think its taking.  Our God doesn’t work in the manner of timelines.  He is not bound by the secondhand on the clock that ticks away at our very lives.  He’s not bound by the laws of man that have mostly been self-inflicted; much like a wound we won’t lance for fear of the initial pain.  We keep applying more laws to cover the mess of not upholding the ultimate of laws; that being the Law of God.

When I say this to people many of them will say “but Michelle, Jesus did away with the Law of Moses”.   My response is always the same; “He did”?  I thought Jesus came to fulfill the Law, not get rid of it.  Jesus told the Pharisees on many occasions that while they were busy making their laws of not having extra-marital affairs they were already found guilty by just thinking of it.

Jesus’ message of salvation should be a welcome relief to those who live to be right.  Your struggle is over my friend!  He came and did the job for you because whatever task you’ve imposed upon yourself is now accomplished thanks to our Lord.  Psalm 25 can be used as a comfort to us that while we are worshipping this Almighty God, He is ever faithful to show us how He loves and cares for us.  The main theme to this life:  wait on the Lord.

I’m at the end of a Bible study that began last fall on the book of Jeremiah.  Never had I imagined how good of a study this was going to be!  I signed up on the premise that it would be good for me to learn more about Old Testament times and learn which order the books of the Old Testament are in.  Oh I know there is always something God wants us to learn and I don’t recall a time that He hasn’t provided that way.  This study though was one of the best Bible studies I’ve been in since I was saved 14 years ago.

We begin learning about Jeremiah by reading that He’s been called by God to proclaim instructions to the Israelites during the takeover and captivity.  The Babylonian Empire was sweeping through countries and continents, plundering everything and everyone in its vicious path.  The Israelites had broken into two kingdoms that being Judah in the south and Israel in the north.  The Kingdom of Israel had already been taken captive by the Assyrians in 722 BC and dispersed.  By the time 612 BC came rolling around with the takeover of Nineveh by the Babylonians, the marching of the soldier’s feet became louder by the moment for the Kingdom of Judah.  The Israelites begged Jeremiah to go and receive instruction from the Lord so they would know what to do; stay in Jerusalem or flee to Egypt where it seemed there would be peace (Jer. 42:1-6).  The year was 605 BC.

God’s word to Jeremiah came back with the explicit order to stay put.  The Israelites were not to move an inch, but to wait upon the Lord.  He was tired of having to punish them and wanted to just love them with blessings of comfort and sustenance, yet once again they would have nothing of it.  He promised them that the King of Babylon while being ruthless would have mercy upon the Israelites and allow them to live and stay where they were.  Instead the majority of Israelites packed their camels and headed south.  The consequence of their move was what God had promised – annihilation.

With this story in mind let’s open the Book of Mormon to the very first book they call 1st Nephi.  The date and place are supposedly the same.  It was circa 600 BC and the first scene opens up in Jerusalem where the prophet Lehi has lived all of his life.  In the first chapter we read that Nephi being born of Lehi and Sariah; was living in war-torn Jerusalem and has become fearful.

Now in order to understand who these people are let’s take a look at what the doctrines of the LDS Church have to say about them.  These particular people are supposedly part of the “ten lost tribes of Israel”.  When the tribes of Israel split in two, ten of the twelve tribes moved north.  The two remaining tribes, that of Benjamin and Judah, stayed in the south and the city of Jerusalem was in this region.

LDS scholars have said Lehi and his family were part of these ten tribes that were scattered but they aren’t sure where they went initially- they claim Lehi’s an Ephraimite.  For the sake of the argument let’s say he fled from the north and settled in Jerusalem with his family.  Why then didn’t he obey the words of Jeremiah?

Nephi tells us his father Lehi went to the Lord in prayer to seek guidance from God as to what he should do.  After witnessing a pillar of fire and “seeing many things” he went home to lie down on his bed.

While lying in bed from being overcome by the Spirit, Lehi had a vision.  In his vision he saw the heavens open and “he thought he saw God sitting on His throne”, in addition to a “concourse of angels”. Then “he saw One descending out of the midst of heaven, and he beheld that his luster was above that of the sun at noon-day.”  All of this is in 1 Nephi 1:7-9.

Now I am a regular, ordinary mom of two teen daughters, a housewife, and your average, everyday type of person.  I haven’t graduated from any Bible Seminary, nor have I engaged in any profoundly deep theological studies of Christian church history.  I’m all the things I listed above, but more than that, the most important of all is that I’ve been adopted by God as His child.  Because of this I know His voice and through study, I can discern when others are telling me something that isn’t true.  Case in point – the story about Lehi in Jerusalem circa 600 BC.

The first thing I would have to question is the claim that this is a true account of historical facts that God has kept hidden until the 19th century when He revealed it to Joseph Smith.  Is it really a true word from God?  Throughout the Old Testament up until that time God had meticulously shared with His people who He was.  He had gone to great lengths to prove Himself time and again and really left no doubt as to how He would righteously judge and the consequence if they were to disobey.  God never beat around the bush; He didn’t give one rule to one child and another rule to the other son.  That’s not how our Father operates.  It might be how you and I as a parent or a boss might operate in life, but not the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.  I don’t know about you, but the older I get the more comforting this is to me!

Now historically speaking, we have verifiable proof and evidence the King of Babylon began showing dominance over Judah (the southern kingdom) in 605 BC.  He took many Israelites captive at that time and sent them to Babylon on three different captures before the final destruction of Jerusalem in BC 586.  Still there were was a remnant God had intentionally left in Jerusalem that survived.  We see this in Jeremiah 42:7-22 when Jeremiah delivers the word of God to the Israelites after they had asked him to inquire of the Lord’s direction on their behalf.

     Remember, God said don’t move.

In the book of Nephi it is written that Lehi, the patriarch of the family, received many visions and words from God, but Nephi said he wasn’t going to write down all of his father’s dreams.  He did however state he had received many visions and visits from angels as well and in fact would go ahead and write those things down.   It says in 1 Nephi chapter one those writings are an abridgement to the work of his father’s writings.

We’re never told exactly how the Israelites sinned or what they were guilty of except they had committed abominations and would be destroyed if they didn’t escape.  When we make it to chapter two we read that Lehi had received another vision telling him that he needs to pack up the family and leave.  While wandering for a few days in “the wilderness” they come upon the river of Laman which supposedly emptied into the Red Sea.  While camping there Lehi has yet another dream and he instructs his sons to go back to Jerusalem and retrieve the brass plates which contain the writings of the Law and their family history as well as all the gold and other valuables they had left behind in their rush to escape.

While on their journey to retrieve these items and after a few mess ups, Nephi encounters a drunken man sleeping on the ground outside the city walls named Laban.  Before Laban can wake up Nephi is instructed by the “Spirit of the Lord” to remove the sword of steel from Laban’s sheath and chop his head off.  After obeying this spirit he dresses in Laban’s clothing and then goes into the place where Laban kept the plates of brass that this Jewish family is after.  He tricked the servant into believing he was Laban and took the plates to give to his father.

After they returned to the tent of their father he began to read all the stories that had been written by the holy prophets and even up to the time of Jeremiah.  1 Nephi 5:13.  It says that he also read about the genealogy of his father which told him they were related to Joseph who had been thrown into a well by his brothers and then sold to the Egyptians.  The sad part about this story…none of it is true.

There are many things within the first five chapters of the Book of Mormon that give us warnings of impending danger when you place it as an addendum to the Bible.  If you’re a member of the Church I simply encourage and challenge you to look these things up for yourself.  Below is a chart that consists of dates, places, people and their references.  Now the Book of Mormon says in 1 Nephi 5:13 that even the records of Jeremiah are imprinted upon the plates so we can obviously say with a fair amount of certainty they’ve heard about him and acknowledge they are in the same vicinity at the same time.

Bible Book of Mormon
God said: Don’t go to Egypt. –Jer. 42:1-22 Escape to Egypt – 1 Ne. 2:2

Consequences: Most were killed –Jer. 43:8-44:14 Blessed/ obedience 1 N 5:20-22
Northern tribe lived: Nineveh/scattered Jerusalem/scattered
Southern tribe lived: So. Israel/Jerusalem Jerusalem
Timeline: 605 BC Circa 600 BC

Pressing forward we read in 1 Nephi chapter seven that Lehi thinks his boys should go back into Jerusalem and get themselves some wives.  They do as their father commands and go back to of all places, Ishmael’s house.

Now regardless of what the Book of Mormon says, it was never a good idea to hang out with people named Ishmael.  Worshipping the god of Ishmael is what got the Kingdom of Israel taken into captivity by the Assyrians and scattered more than a century beforehand.  They were worshipping the god Milcom that Solomon had eventually built altars for because of his bad habit of liking women from the stranger’s tribes.  Nonetheless, here is Lehi receiving revelations from his god to send his sons to marry the girls of Ishmael and that’s exactly what they did.

The Ishmael mentioned in Jeremiah 40:13 – 41:18 is one of the sons of the king and he went about making much trouble not only for the Jews, but for the Chaldeans as well.  The Bible tells us In Jeremiah 41:2 that Ishmael, along with his friends, murdered Gedaliah the governor of the Israelites, who were the leftover poorest of the poor that stayed behind in Jerusalem.  He also murdered ten others that were supping at a banquet that Gedaliah had invited him to that day in addition to the Chaldeans.

Having an uncontrollable hatred for the Israelites, Ishmael and friends went out the next day to greet a company of eighty Jews, weeping as they approached the men.  These eighty men were bringing offerings for the Lord with shaven faces and torn clothing; a sign of submission.  Ishmael and his men bemoaned the horrible death of Gedaliah saying they had found him dead and led the group into the city.  When they all got inside the city walls Ishmael and his team slaughtered the eighty men and threw their corpses into the cisterns.  The news of his evil deeds spread throughout the region quickly and people began to get nervous.

The few remaining Israelites begged Jeremiah to speak to God on their behalf – Jer. 42:1-7 which takes us back to the beginning of this article.  Did God really tell Lehi to leave and go to the wilderness or Egypt or stay where he was at?

After all that, let’s skip on over to 1 Nephi 17 to see some of the workings of Nephi and company.  In this chapter there are many reasons to question and ask why Nephi, if he was born of godly Israelites, would say and do the things written about here.

In this chapter there is the problem of how they are to eat meat.  The Bible tells us in Lev. 7:25-6; “Moreover ye shall eat no manner of blood, whether it be of fowl or of beast, in any of your dwellings.  Whatsoever soul it be that eateth any manner of blood, even that soul shall be cut off from his people.

In contrast 1 Nephi 17:2 says;  “And so great were the blessings of the Lord upon us, that while we did live upon raw meat in the wilderness, our women did give plenty of suck for their children, and were strong, yea, even like unto the men; and they began to bear their journeyings without murmurings.”

Further down in verse 12 we see that God reassures Nephi that He would make the meat sweet so there was no reason to cook it.  In verse 3 it said they obeyed the commandments of God, but which commandment is true; the commandment from the god of the Jaredites or the God of the Israelites?

1 Nephi 17:44 reiterates that their god told them to leave Jerusalem; “Wherefore, the Lord commanded my father that he should depart into the wilderness; and the Jews also sought to take away his life; yea, and ye also have sought to take away his life; wherefore, ye are murderers in your hearts and ye are like unto them.

Why would the Jews be after him if he was an Israelite?

The next area a problem arises is in verse forty-seven.  Nephi is having trouble with his brothers who are questioning his authority since he is younger than they are, just like the story we see in the Bible with Joseph and his older brothers in Gen. 37:1 – 45:28.  He tells his brothers not to do harm to him because he is filled with the Spirit of God.

The reason we know this is a problem is because of what it says in the Bible.  In the three chapters of the gospel of John fourteen through seventeen we are taken to the last teachings of Jesus.  In John 14:16-17 Jesus was telling His disciples that if they love Him and keep His commandments then He will ask the Father and He will give them another Helper so that they would never be alone.

This had never happened before.

In verse twenty Jesus tells them and us what it will be like when they are truly saved; “At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.”  In fact He goes on to tell them this in verse 26; “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Now if the Holy Spirit had never been in anyone why was Nephi the only person to ever have this happen?  Again, something’s fishy in Denmark!  After they had made it over the “great waters” and into the “promised land” the small group of adherents began their new lives, build great cities, fight in massive wars and eventually die out as a people altogether.

This my friend is how the Book of Mormon begins.  There are many more facts throughout the rest of the Book of Mormon that cry out lies, false prophecies, absolute impossibilities and contradictions.  But we don’t want you to take our word for it, instead take it slowly, look at the evidence and determine for yourself what is right.  Your decision shouldn’t be based upon Moroni 10:4-6 alone.  That is no test at all; it’s subjective reasoning and futile.

Above all know that we pray for the Mormon people daily.  We know that you love Jesus in your hearts and believe you are doing the right thing.  If you’ve been praying about what to do I’m here to tell you there is a way out!  If you’d like more information or simply want prayer, don’t hesitate to let us know!

Overview and Facts to Consider from First Nephi

If it wasn’t the Spirit of God with and in Nephi then who might it be?

Why would everyone but Lehi’s group be killed for fleeing to Egypt?

Why would anyone who is following the original Law not abide by all of its commandments?  1 Nephi 17:2, 12.

Why did the sons of Lehi marry the daughters of Ishmael when God told His children not to mingle with the Egyptians and other foreigners?

Is it reasonable that Lehi and his family could have left Jerusalem and walk 210 miles in three days to get to the Red Sea?  1 Nephi 2:4-7.

Why would the destruction of Jerusalem be marvelous as Lehi said in 1 Nephi 2:18?

     As is usually the case, I came across something interesting in the Book of Mormon while looking for something else.  This time I was reminded of what the Nephites thought of Jesus and His skin color in 3 Nephi 19:30;

And when Jesus had spoken these words he came again unto his disciples; and behold they did pray steadfastly, without ceasing, unto him; and he did smile upon them again; and behold they were white, even as Jesus.”

The Authority & Priesthood Issue

Who Holds the Keys of Authority?

If you were to ask a Mormon the question listed above, they would tell you that only the LDS Church holds the proper authority to preach, baptize and be called the children of God.  The following is a synopsis of why.  They believe that it was absolutely necessary a “restoration” take place.  This means it is their belief that all of Christianity was wrong and therefore needed to be brought back from whence it came.  In order to do this, God needed a “chosen prophet” whom he authorized to carry out his “plan of salvation”.

Because God does not vary, nor does He change His order of things, it is understood by the LDS members there must be ordinances performed and rituals observed to gain true salvation which to the Mormon is godhood.

Smith taught that just as in all the ages before Christ, there would be a “chosen people” to whom the gospel was given.  According to Smith it had been pre-determined and foretold this last dispensation was to take place through Joseph Smith.  He in turn would “ordain” members of the Church with the priesthood, which is what carries the authority to preach and administer the laws of God.  The Encyclopedia of Joseph Smith’s Teachings, pg. 56 says;

We believe that no man can administer salvation through the gospel, to the souls of men, in the name of Jesus Christ, except he is authorized from God, by revelation, or by being ordained by some one whom God hath sent by revelation, as it is written by Paul, Romans 10:14, “and how shall they believe in him, of whom, they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent?” and I will ask, how can they be sent without a revelation, or some other visible display of the manifestation of God.

Smith received a revelation from God in Kirtland, OH on March 8, 1833 telling him that he (Smith) would hold the keys to the kingdom of heaven and hold all authority for all time and eternity.  History of the Church 1:329-31 and in D&C 90:1-4;

Thus saith the Lord, verily, verily I say unto you my son, thy sins are forgiven thee, according to thy petition, for thy prayers and the prayers of thy brethren have come up into my ears. Therefore, thou art blessed from henceforth that bear the keys of the kingdom given unto you; which kingdom is coming forth for the last time. Verily I say unto you, the keys of this kingdom shall never be taken from you, while thou art in the world, neither in the world to come; Nevertheless, through you shall the oracles be given to another, yea, even unto the church.”

Here’s what Doctrines of Salvation 3:80 has to say in regards to authority:

Man cannot act legally in the name of the Lord unless he is vested with the priesthood, which is divine authority. No man has the power or the right to take this honor to himself. Unless he is called of God, as was Aaron…The Lord has said his house is a house of order….”

It is vital that the ex-Mormon understands he/she is not under this “authority” any longer, but has been commanded by Jesus to go out to the nations and spread the gospel as Jesus told us to do in Matthew 28:18-20.  While not everyone is going to become preachers or

oversee ministries, it is important the authority topic is acknowledged.  It serves its purpose in placing the spiritual loyalty where it belongs; that being Jesus of course!  Notice also how they’ve stripped Jesus’ authority of being God from His very hands.

Addressing this issue emphasizes that the One True God has been in control of the church throughout the last 20 centuries and isn’t in “need” of anyone or anything!  It also helps the new Christian to understand that they, along with the true God, are the ones in charge of their lives, not the church.  The authority the early Christian church received came from four sources.

1-The Old Testament (keep in mind it was referred to as scripture then).  It was their ultimate authority in all matters and they also learned by seeing Jesus use scripture to correct and teach.  Paul and Peter both quoted from the Hebrew “Bible” in their epistles to the churches.

2 – The early church treated Jesus’ words, parables and everything He said with absolute authority.  His words outweighed everything and everyone.  Yes, Jesus accepted the Hebrew Scriptures as having absolute authority, but His power extended beyond that.

3 – The apostles’ teachings held authority.  Proof of this is found throughout the book of Acts. The amount of people that listened and believed because of the power of the Holy Spirit manifested through them was a miracle.  Acts 5:11-14.  This shows they had received authority to preach Jesus’ name and build the church.  They were able to give a full explanation of Jesus’ teachings after He had been crucified.

4 – The letters of the apostles and disciples.  There is absolute authority in the written letters by the apostles and they hold as much authority as their oral teachings.  No one disputed any of the writings when the letters were written and were being passed around from one church to the next.  The witnesses of the events they wrote about were still alive and could attest to the validity of them!

In the first chapter of Acts we can see with clarity the instructions and promises that Jesus gave to the Apostles.  Acts 1:8 serves as both a promise and instruction!  It is with authority that we are expected to preach the word of God because of the power we have received from the Holy Spirit.

Acts 1:8; “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”

While I don’t wish to belabor this topic I truly feel this handbook wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t have the help of some good friends of mine.  The following contribution came from my dear friend Ed Decker.

Joseph Smith & his priesthoods

Mormonism’s Claim to have the full and only authority to act in the name of God on Earth needs to be looked at, not only from the revelation of it from LDS scripture, but also from the Bible.

DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS
OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS
 SECTION 13

Ordination of Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery to the Aaronic Priesthood along the bank of the Susquehanna River, near Harmony, Pennsylvania, May 15, 1829. HC 1: 39–42. The ordination was done by the hands of an angel, who announced himself as John, the same that is called John the Baptist in the New Testament. The angel explained that he was acting under the direction of Peter, James, and John, the ancient apostles, who held the keys of the higher priesthood, which was called the Priesthood of Melchizedek. The promise was given to Joseph and Oliver that in due time the Priesthood of Melchizedek would be conferred upon them. See also Section 27: 7, 8, 12.

Keys and powers of Aaronic Priesthood are set forth.

Upon you my fellow servants, in the name of Messiah I confer the Priesthood of Aaron, which holds the keys of the ministering of angels, and of the gospel of repentance, and of baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; and this shall never be taken again from the earth, until the sons of Levi do offer again an offering unto the Lord in righteousness.

Later, in Chapter 27, we read:

8 Which John I have sent unto you, my servants, Joseph Smith, Jun., and Oliver Cowdery, to ordain you unto the first priesthood which you have received, that you might be called and ordained even as Aaron;

9 And also Elijah, unto whom I have committed the keys of the power of turning the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to the fathers, that the whole earth may not be smitten with a curse;

10 And also with Joseph and Jacob, and Isaac, and Abraham, your fathers, by whom the promises remain;

11 And also with Michael, or Adam, the father of all, the prince of all, the ancient of days;

12 And also with Peter, and James, and John, whom I have sent unto you, by whom I have ordained you and confirmed you to be apostles, and especial witnesses of my name, and bear the keys of your ministry and of the same things which I revealed unto them;

Joseph himself described the visitation of John the Baptist in the Pearl of Great Price, Joseph Smith History, verse 72 when he said:

“The messenger who visited us on this occasion and conferred this Priesthood upon us, said that his name was John, the same that is called John the Baptist in the New Testament, and that he acted under the direction of Peter, James and John, who held the keys of the Priesthood of Melchizedek, which Priesthood, he said, would in due time be conferred on us, and that I should be called the first Elder of the Church, and he (Oliver Cowdery) the second. It was on the fifteenth day of May, 1829, that we were ordained under the hand of this messenger, and baptized.

Now, let’s step away from what the LDS Scripture and Joseph himself, has said and look at it a bit more carefully, from a Biblical perspective.

Joseph’s claim that John the Baptist descended and restored the Levitical priesthood of Aaron can only lead one to believe that he had little or no knowledge of the Bible or Jewish tradition at the time.

John the Baptist never held the Levitical priesthood, and could not restore something he never had, even in Mormon theology.  John wore the skins of an animal and ate food that was considered unclean to the Levitical priesthood.  He functioned in the streets and by-ways, proclaiming Jesus Christ, calling people to repent and be baptized.  The priesthood functioned within the temple at the altar.  It doesn’t match up.

If he were a member of the priesthood of his day, its leaders knew nothing of it.  When challenged by Christ regarding this very subject, they were ignorant of John’s authority

23 Now when He came into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people confronted Him as He was teaching, and said, “By what authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority?  24 But Jesus answered and said to them, “I also will ask you one thing, which if you tell Me, I likewise will tell you by what authority I do these things:  25 The baptism of John — where was it from? From heaven or from men?”  And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ 26 But if we say, ‘From men,’ we fear the multitude, for all count John as a prophet.” 27 So they answered Jesus and said, “We do not know.”  And He said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things. Matt 21:23-27 NKJV

Further, the Mormon priesthood that Joseph Smith claimed was a restoration does not deal with the key functions of the early Aaronic priesthood, the offering of gifts according to the law.

3 For every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices. Therefore it is necessary that this One also have something to offer. 4 For if He were on earth, He would not be a priest, since there are priests who offer the gifts according to the law; 5 who serve the copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely instructed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, “See that you make all things according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”   6 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises. Heb 8:3-6 NKJ

Jesus has given us a better Covenant, established upon better promises and has made the old to vanish away. Why would Jesus want to restore what He had come to put an end to?

Joseph Smith claimed that Peter, James and John came and restored the Melchizedek priesthood.  This declaration, like each before it, cannot meet the test of Scripture, or logic.

In Mormonism, no man can hold the Melchizedek priesthood without first holding the Aaronic priesthood.  Those great Apostles of the Lord most obviously were not operating as Levitical priests.  Everything they did within the record of the Word of God places them totally outside that dead priesthood.

The true Melchizedek priesthood was always a priesthood of only one!   It existed before the law was given (Genesis 14:18) and after the law was ended (Hebrews 7:11-17).  It sprang forth with the first offering of bread and wine. (Genesis 14:18)  It reappeared only when the final offering of the broken body of Christ and His shed blood ended the penalty of the law as He became our sin offering by the sacrifice of Himself (Hebrews 9:12-14).

GUILT AND SHAME

Witnessing Tip of the Day Guilt & Shame Is 617Mormons live life on the precept they must work for salvation. In Mormonism there’s a ‘general salvation’ given to all mankind, and after this comes the placement of souls which is dependent upon good works here on earth.

This may cause a myriad of problems as you might imagine, so our focus is on the impact this has on the soul.

There are several ways to work for  salvation, but for now I’m only listing a few.

The Mormon will always feel shame if they’re not accepted into the highest level of heaven – this is known also as the Celestial Kingdom, and there are three requirements to get in; temple marriage, good works which includes proxy work for the dead, and the third requirement is to pay a full ten percent tithing.

The most important ‘must’ in getting to the Celestial Kingdom is making sure you are married in the temple. Yes, marriage is the way to salvation ladies and gentlemen. If you aren’t married in the temple, you lose your right to see your relatives in heaven, you’ll be placed in a lower kingdom; only to become a servant to those in the Celestial Kingdom.

There are the remaining two things required for “true salvation”, but keep in mind marriage is a definite must in the mind of every single Mormon. From the series, Doctrines of Salvation, 2:58-59 it says;

Marriage, as understood by Latter-day Saints, is a covenant ordained to be everlasting. It is the foundation for eternal exaltation, for without it there could be no eternal progress in the kingdom of God…Marriage is the grandest, most glorious, and most exalting principle connected with the gospel. It is that which the Lord holds in reserve for those who become his sons and daughters; all others are servants only, even if they gain salvation. They do not become members of the household of our Father…

LDS theology dictates you’ll receive a calling from the Lord to work in different areas of the Church. The bishop will take a look at his list of who’ served where, and for how long. If your name hasn’t appeared on the list of who’s worked in the nursery for example, you should expect your phone to ring. You cannot refuse this ‘calling from the Lord’.

The structure of the Church is made up of lay clergymen, and women, so there’s no compensation for your hours spent working until you’ve been called to the status of high priest, or above.

The Encyclopedia of Mormonism, p. 48 –

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is organized to benefit all who participate, and all are expected to assist in its labors (see Activity in the Church; Lay Participation and Leadership; Ward Organization). The Church is administered according to the principles of individual involvement, service, and self-government. There is no paid ministry in local wards or stakes, and the work of the Church is carried out through volunteer service by the members, who are called by priesthood leaders to contribute in various capacities.”

LDS theology also dictates you must tithe a hard 10% to receive a temple recommend.

These small slips of paper are coveted by members of the Church as their token of being righteous and worthy enough, to be in God’s presence. It is God’s permission slip for you to get in the doors.

There is no higher calling in the Church than to hold a current temple recommend and they can keep their recommend only if they have a good standing at the ‘annual tithing settlement’.

For those who haven’t divvied up by January, there’s a line at local banks with people applying for personal loans.

D&C 119:4 says;

And after that, those who have thus been tithed shall pay one-tenth of all their interest annually; and this shall be a standing law unto them forever, for my holy priesthood, saith the Lord.”

Also see Encyclopedia of Mormonism, p. 1481 –

At the end of each year, ward members meet individually with their bishop in a tithing settlement interview to verify Church records of their individual contributions and to declare confidentially to the bishop whether or not the amount contributed is a “full tithe.”

The members are obligated to pay their ten percent, and this amount goes solely to the Church for more church buildings, temples, supplies, etc. Additionally, once a month they hold a ‘fast and testimony’ meeting.

Members will fast from food for two meals before they attend these meetings, and take the money they would have spent on that food to donate to a benevolent fund. These funds go to help the needy in their local food banks, or if there are special needs within their own ranks.

There’s a fair share of people who won’t be able to meet the financial standards of giving the Church requires.

These things will produce the inevitable; guilt and shame. For others, there might be guilt and shame experienced if they’re a convert and get out of the Church.

Or there is the guilt associated with converting others into the Church, and/or bringing children into the mix. Many adult ex-Mormons are riddled with shame by watching their adult children making the choice of staying in the Church after they have been saved. It’s heart-wrenching no doubt, to see them still in the Church when you’ve found freedom in Christ.

Several years ago while working through my exodus, the Lord showed me an amazing truth. It’s an easy enough thing to remember which is good for me! But it also packs a powerful punch in the way of a learning tool for any of us in regards to our own spiritual life with Jesus. He showed me this:

Guilt and Shame are Never the Same.

It rhymes, making it easy to remember.

Guilt and God both begin with “G”. God convicts us of our sin – this is the guilt – we repent, and He remembers it no more as He promised us in Isaiah 43:25;

“I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.”

Shame and Satan both begin with an “S”. Shame is death to the soul dear one! Shame is experienced when you repent for the same sin repeatedly. Dictionary.com defines it this way –

‘…the painful feeling arising from the consciousness of something dishonorable, improper, ridiculous, etc., done by oneself or another to publicly humiliate or shame for being or doing something specified’.

Isn’t it sad this is what the Church would want for the majority of its members? Less than 10% of active Mormons are considered temple worthy! The bishop knows who’s worthy, and who’s not; and you can bet the farm everyone else in the ward will know as well when you don’t stand up to ‘bear your testimony’ about your temple experience last month. Yet no one gets together to compare notes because the temple experience is also considered ‘sacred’ and shouldn’t be spoken about in detail with anyone at all.

In Deut. 28:66 God warns the Israelites that He would curse them if they didn’t obey His commands of staying pure in the land of Canaan. The curse is not having a restful assurance of their lives.

Ask the ex-Mormon what kind of assurance they had for their salvation while being in the Church. I don’t know of one Mormon who can say for sure that they’re going to heaven.

They have no hope at all because of shame; they never feel as if they’ve been forgiven, or believe they’ve not done enough. Share with the ex-Mormon from the Bible how they can be assured of their salvation.

2 Tim. 1:12 – I know whom I have believed

Phil. 1:6 – He will complete the work

Heb. 13:5-6 – He will never desert me

1 John 2:12 – Your sins are forgiven.

Isaiah 40:8 – The word of God endures forever

MORMON TERMINOLOGY/WORD STUDIES

For the sake of brevity suffice it to say the Mormons do not speak the same English that you and I speak.  After prayer, this rivals the most important subject to focus on when mentoring a Mormon.  They have been taught that simple words carry a double meaning or they are just outright opposite of their true meaning.  This is one of the main reasons they have been so confused while being a Mormon.

I will give you a few examples of how to do word studies and then you and/or the Mormon pick the subjects that most interest you!  At the time of this writing I’ve been out of the church for about fourteen years and I’m still doing word studies!  I found that even after I knew the “Mormonism in me” was gone, I still needed those word studies to give me a deeper understanding of His word and thereby enriching my walk with Him.

There is an article on our website www.lifeafter.org titled Mormon Terminology.  Feel free to go there for examples of words to study.  I wrote this article after looking back on my personal journals throughout my own exodus from the Church.  These were the words most important to me when I began my new life as a Christian; however this is not to say that this list is complete or the only words that must be used!  Allow God’s Holy Spirit to guide all of you in the decision making.

One of the most important things to a Mormon is to know they are being reverent towards God.  They are taught to refer to God as “Heavenly Father”.  If they want to be extremely reverent they would use the term “elohim” but this is used only sparingly.  The significance of this name for God cannot be overstated!  The word “elohim” is one of the real Hebrew names for God.  There are actually three definitions of this word.

The first meaning for “elohim” is the fullness or deity of God.  You can find this in Strong’s.  It is listed under the word for “God” and it is # 430.  The first example for a verse that I would use is Gen. 1:26;

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.”

The key word in this verse is “us”.  This word is translated to “elohim”.  The reason I would use this particular verse is twofold.  It shows the Mormon the truth about the meaning of the word “elohim” in regards to the creation of the earth (meaning it wasn’t created through a “Council of gods”) and that there is only ONE God.  Remember Mormons believe that they can become gods someday.

Now there are literally hundreds of verses in the Bible where the writer has used the word God with the understanding that he is referring to “elohim”.  What you’ll want to do is list a handful or so verses that Strong’s lists for “elohim”.  Take the Mormon to each of those examples throughout the Bible for them to get a full picture of God in this sense and then you’ll want to do the same thing with each of the words and their derivatives.

The second meaning of “elohim” is pagan gods.  An example of this can be found in 1 Sam. 28:13; “And the king said unto her, Be not afraid: for what sawest thou? And the woman said unto Saul, I saw gods ascending out of the earth.”  The key word in this verse is “gods”.

This is when the witch Endor brought a spirit up out of the fire at the request of Saul.  King Saul wanted the dead prophet Samuel to come and speak to him personally with a message from God.  This type of act is called necromancy and is strictly forbidden by God.  The Mormons have an affinity to communicate with their dead relatives.  The LDS Church tells the members that these types of spirits are their dead relatives – this is a lie; they are pagan gods.

The third meaning for “elohim” is rulers and/or kings.  You can find this in Psalm 82:6; “I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High.”  As you can see the key word here is once again “gods”.  Jesus actually referred to this scripture when speaking with the Pharisees. He quoted the scripture as an example to say they were indeed all gods; they are rulers of their money, their homes, and their own little lives.

Now the lesson for the Mormon here is rich.  LDS Doctrine does not ascribe to the true teachings of the Bible in regards to the Trinity, or the Deity of God.  If they are calling their Heavenly Father by the name of “Elohim” and they don’t believe in the Trinity, then who are they worshipping?

The next word I suggest studying would be covenant.  In the Hebrew this word is “beriyth”.  It means a compact made by passing between two pieces of flesh.  You could use examples of covenants that God made with men beginning with Noah, Abraham, Moses and the ultimate covenant that of course being Jesus Christ.  Explain to the Mormon the foreshadowing of these men’s covenants and how the only unconditional covenant that God made with man was the covenant of placing Jesus on that cross.  Jesus was going to hang there regardless of your actions, thereby making this unconditional.

For examples of covenants we read how God promised Noah in Genesis 6 that He would do two things.  First He would save Noah and his family from certain death if he built the ark and secondly, He’d place a rainbow in the sky as His promise that He wouldn’t flood the earth again to destroy man.  The covenants He made with Abraham begin in Genesis 15.  Explain who Abraham is and what his purpose was in life.  Most Mormons have never studied the life of Abraham and have only heard the name Abraham because it is the title in one of the books from the Pearl of Great Price.

God made a covenant with Moses in Exodus 12 with the celebration of Passover and then again instituting the Law in Exodus 19.  If time permits and you’re up to it also point out how blood covenants were used by men by showing them the covenant made between Jonathan and Samuel from first Samuel.  Studying these examples will explain to the ex-Mormon how blood covenants are in effect.

Hebrews 9:16 says; “For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.”

Choose some of your favorite scriptures that prophecy about Jesus coming and also use some epistles and gospels from the New Testament. Just one or two from each should suffice for the examples.

Some other suggestions for word studies would be creation, salvation, justification, baptism, adopted, forgiveness, nature of man, eternal, etc.  When you begin these word studies it’s also important to remember the derivatives of the word.  For example – create, created, creation, creature.  Learning the true meanings of these words helps to erase the false teachings of Mormonism.  They will be amazed when the fog begins to dissipate from their thinking!

One more thing to keep in mind in regards to terminology.  As the ex-Mormon begins their new life in Christ and spends time in the word, at church and being around other Christians, they will obviously see/hear phrases and words that were used by the LDS Church.  Terms like “many mansions”, “pearl of great price”, “church of Jesus Christ”, “words of wisdom”, etc., can have an adverse reaction at first so reassure them through scripture how these things are legitimate and of God.

The ex-Mormon is going to be somewhat skeptical about various subjects and understandably so!  Assure them they’re not alone in this and to investigate the subject so they have a clear understanding of what they’ve encountered.  The Lord will be faithful in showing them how to trust Him in all things so they can use this example in their spiritual lives as a foundation to build upon.

Chapter 10. Guilt and Shame

WILL THE ONE TRUE CHURCH PLEASE STAND UP?

The one thing I always believed as a Mormon was that I belonged to the “only true church on the face of the earth”.  By birthright alone I was “special” and had advantages that no one else did.  By birthright alone I would be in heaven and by birthright alone I was a superior being.  All other churches were the whores of Babylon and only thought they knew God.

The Presbyterians, Lutherans, Catholics, Baptists, Nazarenes and yes, even the Pentecostals were all going to the Telestial kingdom (lowest kingdom) because they weren’t members of the LDS Church.  They were going to be serving those of us in the highest kingdom of heaven (Celestial Kingdom) because they either didn’t understand or chose not to be a part of the one true Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  To understand why there is such a huge stumbling block in the mind of the Mormons on this topic, we need to take a look at what causes it to begin with.

Joseph Smith maintained the body of Christ could no longer be found on earth.  He claims he went to the grove of a forest near his home in Palmyra, NY to ask God which church he should join and God told him to join none of them, that every single church on the face of the earth was wrong. (Joseph Smith’s Testimony chapter 1.)  He was then told he must wait to receive the golden or brass plates which held the story of a forgotten people from Jerusalem that came here to the Americas to escape persecution.

It was also at this time Smith claims to have been told by God to translate some old papyrus that a traveling salesman sold to him.  This papyrus supposedly held the story of the creation and the pre-existence that we read in the book of Abraham.  In reality, the papyrus is what Egyptologists call a “funerary breathing”. (How to perform ceremonies at mummification.)  As time went by the Church continued to evolve, but already the heresies had been born.

While the vast majority of the public believed Smith was a false prophet, there were on the other hand, those who believed his story.  The little group of believers grew as they continued to believe that God Himself had actually visited Smith and revealed to him the new commandments and the way to salvation.  After all, assurance of salvation is much easier to achieve and believe if you took care of things yourself; and Joseph had them convinced this was the “only true way to salvation”.  This was the mindset needed for the LDS Church to flourish and indeed it did!

The other mindset needed for a vulnerable flock, is for the belief that you are being persecuted all for the sake of the Lord.  From the beginning the Church has insisted this has been their lot in life, thus the need to continually flee to the next town while at the same time the warrants for Joseph Smith’s arrest began to stack up.  For a chronological detailed account of Joseph Smith’s life, be sure to visit the website of www.josephsmith.net to find an abundance of informative stories, historical documents and pictures to keep anyone occupied for a long time!  Keep in mind this website is a “pro-Mormon” site and you will not find all of his arrest records or complaints filed against him at this site.  (1)

The LDS have always held a very strong position in asserting their civil rights and pointing out their patriotism for America.  They are defensive when someone brings up religion in conversation and they will inevitably bring their rights as Americans into the equation every time.

Granted, it’s not against the law to invoke your First Amendment Rights to worship as you please.  However, it is unlawful to practice polygamy, to create and distribute your own monetary system; invoke Martial Law based on your own whims; and to arbitrarily burn down buildings when newspapers publish the details of charges that are being brought against you.

These charges, amongst others, were just the tip of the iceberg for the communities the LDS Church had invaded and subsequently fled from in its early years.  As of today the LDS Church now claims, as it always has, that it is the “only true church on the face of the earth”, (D&C 1:30).  They believe the power of the priesthood was not handed down as it should have been, thus the apostasy.  The Church members will become immediately defensive when asked about the history of the LDS Church, so expect some resistance to your message even after they get out of the Church.

When a Mormon gets out of the Church they are not accustomed to the vocabulary that Christians employ.  An example of this is the phrase “The church of Jesus Christ” – meaning the body of Christ – the Christians.  I would use this phrase with the new Christian as much as possible to get them used to the idea that this phrase has been in use since the inception of the true Christian church circa 33 AD.  The Christians belong to The Church of Jesus Christ.  It is His church; it belongs to Him, not the Christians.

Compare that to the Mormon’s church which is called The Church of Jesus Christ, of Latter-day Saints.

They believe the body of Christ originated with Adam as Joseph Smith taught (DS 3:82).  People were baptized for the remission of sins, received the gift of the Holy Ghost and men held the priesthood.  Now with the short story of the LDS Church out of the way, let’s take a look at what God tells us about His church – from the Bible!

We see in the book of Acts how God built up His church to lay the foundation for the rest of time.  I have been of the opinion lately that if the LDS Church really wanted to say there are no inconsistencies in their doctrine they should have changed the text in the book of Acts in the JST.

The entire book of Acts of the Apostles is just that; an account of how it all began.  If the so-called church at the time of Christ died with the last apostle, then why keep their stories in scripture?  What purpose does that serve the Mormon community?

For the first time in history the Holy Spirit poured Himself upon a group of people – it’s called Pentecost.  Acts chapter two tells us that men from every single country were represented in that room on that day.  They had all come to Jerusalem to celebrate the feast of the first-fruits and many ended up being a witness to the ultimate Passover Sacrifice – Christ Jesus.  They waited as Jesus instructed them to do (Acts 1:8) to receive the Promise that He had spoken to them about earlier.

Be sure to share with them some interesting facts about this event and the entire book of Acts!  For example:  at the time Luke wrote this no one objected to his writings or the authenticity of events that took place.  The witnesses of these events were still alive and they most certainly would have said something if he had any of it wrong.  Luke was a well respected doctor in that region and was known to be meticulous about the minutest of details.

Matthew Henry said this in his introduction commentary on the book of Acts;

“Now this book gives us an account of the framing and rearing of that tabernacle. The four gospels showed us how the foundation of that house was laid; this shows us how the superstructure began to be raised…”

Luke was with the apostle Paul on many of the missionary journeys, and therefore knew about the dreadful prisons mentioned in Acts, as well as the “prison letters” Paul wrote known as the book of Colossians, Philippians, Ephesians and Philemon.  From what the majority of respectable theologians have surmised, it is probable that Dr. Luke was also one of the original “seventy” the apostles ordained to look over the church.  The “authority” to preach the gospel, establish churches in the world and baptize believers did not die when the last apostle died.

On the contrary, the church of Jesus Christ thrived as promised by Jesus Himself.  Believers withstood persecution because of the stand they took for Jesus everywhere they lived.  Rome was notorious for the atrocities that took place in the first 300 years of Christianity.  The Romans would wrap the skins of dead animals around the Christians in the Coliseum and open the gates to let out the lions.  They were burned at the stake while those in charge would wait for them to denounce the Lord.  Nero used the Christians as human torches to light his world famous gardens in 64 AD.  By 100 AD 25,000 people became martyrs for Jesus.

As for today?  There were more Christians killed in the 20th Century for the Lord than there were in the past 19 centuries combined!  The LDS Church will reply by stating these facts do not prove anything and they do not believe the doctrines of the “Christian church” are correct, thus the need for a complete restoration.  Keep in mind this “Restoration” isn’t anything similar to what Martin Luther did some 500 years ago with the Reformation!  Many Mormon missionaries explain to the unsuspecting public that the “Restoration” and the Reformation were very similar.

Joseph Smith took every doctrine, every principle of Judeo-Christian theology and turned it upside down and sideways.  There is not one single doctrine that he left untouched in regards to the precepts of what you or I know as Christianity.  In fact the more I know about Joseph Smith the more he reminds me of Simon the great magician spoken of in Acts 8:9-24; believing that he could buy the power of the true Holy Spirit to baptize people who were seeking the God of the Bible.

Simon was also known as the “father of Gnosticism”; those who believed you are saved by what you know.  Simon didn’t care about the believers or the things they did while worshipping God.  His goal was strictly focused on one thing only – he wanted the believers to think he was a divine person.  Take notice also that he didn’t go to the unbelievers.  His mission was to go to the Christians; just like Joseph Smith.  The LDS’s biggest “pool of converts” comes from the Baptist church in the United States.

The LDS Church will tell everyone the fact that people apostatized proves the original church of Christ left the earth.  To this, our reply is hogwash!  Jesus warned there would be false christs; John spoke of the people who would sneak in a side-door in his first epistle.  The apostle Paul spoke of the elect being tricked into believing a lie in his letter to the Thessalonians.  There will always be someone who will present a false product to the masses but it doesn’t mean the entire church is gone!

Jesus’ church has withstood 2,000 years of persecution and she is still alive and well.  She is awaiting the return of her Beloved Bridegroom and will continue to wait.  The LDS Church can say what they want, but to the rest of the world and most importantly, God, the church is still in operation.

There are many churches and denominations out in the world today.  Life After hasn’t been called to examine each church’s by-laws and constitution.  What we have been called to do however is to encourage the body of Christ to stand up to the grossly inaccurate doctrine of the LDS Church that says they believe in the God of the Bible.  Come alongside us in unison with thousands of others to stand for the truth!

Life After Ministries also wants to make sure it’s understood that we don’t do this out of any animosity or revenge to bash the Mormon people.  We’ve been in the shoes of the Mormon people and our hearts are broken for the souls who truly believe they are worshipping the right Jesus.

Things to think about:

If you (the LDS Church) are so positive that your message of the gospel is absolute truth then why bother with the “whore of Babylon” when we have websites or ministries that tell the other side of the story?

If lies about the Bible and Jesus are exposed and set straight then why are you offended?

Why has the LDS Church spent millions of dollars and 170 – plus years in proselytizing the “Christian” nation of America instead of focusing on the areas of the 10/40 or the 10/70 window of the world?

Why are families torn apart and shunned when they decide to leave the Church?  What happened to the “Families are Forever” plan?

THE HOLY SPIRIT AND HIS RESIDENCE

Picture yourself sitting in the upper room with Jesus and the other apostles at the end of the Last Supper.  Can you just imagine what it would have felt like and what your response would have been if Jesus had told you (happily I might add), that He was going to die so that you would be filled with The Comforter?  In the gospel of John we find just that!  Judas was about to betray the long awaited Messiah and here was Jesus; just as calm as if He were talking about the daily events in the life of a butterfly.

In less than two months from that very night they were going to be filled with the third person of the Trinity.  God would take up residence inside each and every believer from that day forward and never leave nor desert them just as Jesus promised the apostles with His comforting words on that dark night in the upper room.

John 14:23 says; “Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.”

The long awaited day of Pentecost* had finally arrived as the apostles gathered again for prayer. The meticulous Dr. Luke narrates for us the scenario of how the Holy Spirit rushed in from heaven, filled the whole house with His presence and then filled each of the believers; Acts 2:1-4.  Remember the times in the Gospels when Jesus said you cannot tell which way the wind bloweth?  Now through His power and the wind they felt on their cheeks, they began speaking in tongues and witnessing to the people there that represented all of the surrounding areas!

Actually, there in the city of Jerusalem, people had gathered from all around to celebrate the feast of the first-fruits.  Fifty days from the time of Passover had gone by and now was the time of harvest!  What a glorious event it must have been to witness the arrival of the Promise that Jesus had foretold.  At first the people who gathered around to watch this event thought the brand new spirit filled Christians were drunk, but Peter assured them it was only nine o’clock in the morning and no one had been drinking.

(Just imagine the hushed conversations in groups of 4-5 and compare that thought with the freedom.  The freedom those apostles and disciples now were living in – my, what an experience…probably much like it was for you when you got saved.)

God was now showing them fifty days after the resurrection of His Son Jesus; the Promise was theirs to keep.  Now God would go with them everywhere they went.  They wouldn’t have to wait outside the gates of the temple or travel several days to attend the three required yearly feasts and sacrifices at the temple where God resided.  He now came to His people instead of them going to Him.  Many of the experiences, feelings and thoughts the early Christians lived through are the same things we live through; but not with this particular incident on the first Christian Pentecost.

God purposefully used this exact time to fill His believers to get the biggest audience and get “more bang for the buck”, if you will.  All the Israelites had to come back to Jerusalem for the Feast of the first-fruits.  He wanted His children who didn’t yet believe to hear Him and when they went back to their villages and towns they would take the stories of their experience with them.

Sure, God was obviously going to send out apostles and missionaries, but the little nooks and crannies of the towns were taken care of by witnessing God in action in Jerusalem on that first Christian Pentecost.  God is never one to overlook any situation; He is the ultimate Giver of Life, our Prince of Peace.  What a merciful God we have; so eager to forgive, providing through His love for a way to come to Him just in case you change your mind…

There were so many signs that this “wind” was the infilling of the Presence of God the only way to “miss” it was to willfully turn away from Him.  Paul reiterates the residence of the Holy Spirit in his first epistle to the believers in Corinth.  In chapter 3:16 he says;

“Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?”

And again in 6:19 he reminds them that they are the temple of God who resides inside of them.  For more examples of being filled with the Holy Spirit let’s take a quick glance at the beginning of the Church of Jesus Christ.

Acts 2:41 says 3,000 became Christians in one day. Acts 2:47 says there were people being saved every single day.  In Acts chapter three we find Peter and John going up to the temple to preach the gospel and came upon a lame man sitting at the doors of the temple.  Through this man’s healing that came from the Holy Spirit through the mouths of Peter and John, 5,000 more people were added to the body of Christ!  See Acts 4:4.  By the time we get to Acts 5:14 we see that Peter and John had brought a multitude of believers to their new spirit filled lives.

Fast forward some 2,000 years and here we are in today’s world, today’s sinful behavior filled with violence and temptations of every kind; how’s a person to survive the onslaught of evil from the television, radio, magazines, billboards and just people around them?  The answer is obviously clear for those who pronounce His name as their God, but for those who’ve been lied to on purpose it’s another story.  How does one “get the Holy Spirit”?

Questions will obviously begin swirling around in the heads of those you mentor so be prepared.  This is always such a blessing and fascinating time for them and for you.  Always know that we’re here praying for you and those you are mentoring.  Interesting word study if you have the time!  Take a look at the word “comforter”.

There’s a short list of questions to answer at the end of this section; however we won’t be delving into the subdivisions of the many denominations throughout the world.  The purpose of focusing on this subject is to show the new Christian how the disciples did nothing to deserve or expect the Holy Spirit to take up residence inside of them.   We so desperately want you to know how the everyday Christian life is spent on a day-to-day basis of leaning into Him and no one else.

Now that we’ve gone to the Bible and learned some new things, let’s compare them with the lies that are packed tightly inside of the heart of the ex-Mormon.  Exposing the lies for what they are and calling them out to the light will take the control away from the spiritual stranglehold they have around the throats of these dear people; maybe it’s even you who needs true freedom!

God said that “what is bound on earth is bound in heaven” (claim Matt. 16:19 while praying for their minds to be clear of lies).  The Bible also tells us that scripture is more powerful than a two edged sword.  As a believer you have the ability to claim spiritual authority over any darkness that still lingers around.  So with this in mind let’s take a look at the lies; expose them for what they’re are and carefully help the ex-Mormon see the differences between what the LDS Church and the Bible really says.

For further information on denouncing and the oppression that comes along with being a Mormon, see “Denouncing Mormonism” and “The dark clouds overhead are Mormonism” later in this outline.

The LDS Church has always taught its members that “When the leaders (of the Church) speak, the thinking has been done”.  So if the leaders of the Church say the things that are listed below, it’d be difficult at best to figure out whom the Holy Ghost is, what purpose he serves or where he even come from.

In DoS 1:39 Joseph Fielding Smith, grandson of Hyrum Smith and son of Joseph F. Smith was the “leading gospel scholar and the greatest doctrinal teacher of this generation”. The point to my bringing attention to this man is that he was and still is considered to be as “authoritative” as Hinckley is today.  They use his writings in public correspondence and continued on to say the following in the preface of volume one in DoS:

“Few men in this dispensation have approached him in gospel knowledge or surpassed him in spiritual insight, His is the faith and the knowledge of his father, President Joseph F. Smith, and his grandfather, the Patriarch Hyrum Smith.” –

In other words, they still believe it even if they lie and say they don’t. The leaders of the Church, both dead and alive hold a tremendous amount of spiritual power over the members of the Church.

When an active, inactive, or ex-Mormon says that the Church doesn’t use these references anymore; ask them why the Church still sells them (the books) at their bookstores and why they are continuing to this day to embrace the “old prophets” theology.  They are indeed used in speeches or classes they teach when it’s convenient for the leaders.  Until they completely denounce all the teachings of the LDS faith, we will continue to speak the truth.  The prophet Joseph Fielding Smith told the members of the Church that he didn’t speculate on the purpose of the Holy Spirit.

Doctrines of Salvation 1:39 says; “I have never troubled myself about the Holy Ghost whether he will sometime have a body or not because it is not in any way essential to my salvation. He is a member of the Godhead, with great power and authority, with a most wonderful mission which must be performed by a spirit. This has satisfied me without delving into mysteries that would be of no particular benefit.”

       Then from James Talmage in his work entitled Articles of Faith, pg. 145, it says the Holy Ghost isn’t omnipresent;

“Much of the confusion existing in human conceptions concerning the nature of the Holy Ghost arises from the common failure to segregate His person and powers…the actual person of the Holy Ghost cannot be in more than one place at a time.

      Joseph Smith went so far as to say the Holy Ghost’s power is nothing but pure intelligence.  History of the Church 3:380;

“There are two Comforters spoken of. One is the Holy Ghost, the same as given on the day of Pentecost, and that all Saints receive after faith, repentance, and baptism. This first Comforter or Holy Ghost has no other effect than pure intelligencewhile the effect of the Holy Ghost upon a Gentile, is to purge out the old blood, and make him actually of the seed of Abraham.

      History of the Church 3:379;

“THE GIFT OF THE HOLY GHOST by the laying on of hands, cannot be received through the medium of any other principle than the principle of righteousness, for if the proposals are not complied with, it is of no use, but withdraws.”

      Encyclopedia of Joseph Smith’s Teachings;

“But the Holy Ghost is yet a spiritual body and waiting to take to himself a body, as the Savior did or as God did or the gods before them took bodies; for the Savior says the work that my Father did do I also. . . . He took himself a body and then laid down his life that he might take it up again. (Joseph Smith, The Words of Joseph Smith, p. 382; standardized).

Note:  The page number for the above passage is sketchy as it didn’t list each page number. From the entries before and after it’s somewhere between pg. 321-323.

I believe we’ve made our case and proven the Holy Spirit is not any of the things the LDS Church says He is!  I can’t imagine living even one day without His Holy Spirit inside of me.  I can look back to the time before I was saved in ‘93 and remember what a mess my life was then.  The most striking difference is the loneliness I felt all the time from running circles in my head looking for the answers and always coming back more empty than before.

THE TRUTH ABOUT JESUS

From its inception, the LDS Church has maintained that Jesus Christ is a son of God.  While they say they are Christians by showing Him partiality; calling Him the first born; and proclaiming they worship Him; the evidence of their doctrine tells a different story.

When you ask a Mormon if they believe that Jesus is God they will answer with a resounding “NO”!  When you ask them who they believe Jesus is, they will reply with; He is (the) Christ, God’s Only Begotten Son.  I remember the first time I had heard that Jesus is God.  A friend of mine asked me if I believed in the Trinity.  I had never heard of that word before so I asked her to define it for me.

She said; “Jesus is God incarnate (in the flesh)”.  Well, needless to say that I had never felt so small and insignificant in my life and that feeling stayed with me for quite some time afterward.

If you ask a Mormon if they believe Jesus died for their sins, they will say, “Oh yes”!  And then go on to tell you they also believe He was resurrected on the third day.

When you ask them if they are Christians, they will tell you they most certainly are and the proof is that “His name is in the title of their church”; The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  [1] They will also tell you that they prefer to be called “a member of the LDS Church” instead of “Mormon”.  If you’re confused don’t feel alone; so are they.

I personally find it interesting that the title they now prefer doesn’t include Jesus’ name.  Notice; “I’m a Latter-day Saint” or they have told me “I’m LDS” – where is Jesus in all of this?

Some of the most blasphemous teachings about Jesus in “these latter days” have been promulgated by the doctrines of the LDS Church.  I guarantee that as you continue to go through the various steps of mentoring and layers of lies begin unraveling, you will understand.

When you are mentoring an ex-Mormon it may seem daunting to approach or get through this part of it, but don’t be dismayed.  I have yet to find a Mormon that doesn’t love Jesus to the very core of their being.  If I had a shred of doubt about this I wouldn’t be in this ministry.  The entire reason I do this is because I am one hundred percent convinced they do love Jesus!

Above all in this chapter, be sure to show your enthusiasm about Jesus.  You’re not a mentor because you’ve begrudgingly accepted the position, so don’t give them a subdued “Tom” or a mellow “Susan”; just be yourself!  Go out of your way to show them “faith in action” and how you live your everyday life having a personal relationship with Jesus.

One of the reasons this book ever came to be is because of an “everyday Christian”.  My good friend Fran befriended me at church not long after I got saved.  Everyone in my new Christian church welcomed me warmly and showed me much grace and kindness.

Kirk, the girls and I were invited to various homes for fellowship and all the programs they offered at the church; but not one single person I met had ever personally known a Mormon.  Out of the congregation of roughly 250 there were only a handful of women that took me aside to help and only one or two from that group truly sat with me on a consistent basis to help show me how to have an intimate relationship with the Lord.

We understand it might seem overwhelming to anyone that has no experience with Mormonism.  What you want to keep in mind is that the mentor doesn’t necessarily have to know intimate details about Mormonism and most certainly the Christian mentor doesn’t need to be a psychoanalyst!  You’re there to serve and accept them in the spiritual condition they’ve found themselves in; right here, right now, right at this moment.

God has orchestrated your paths to cross at this time for His purpose; not ours.  The spiritual warfare will have certainly made an appearance by now as you’ve gone through this mentoring book with your Mormon friend or loved one.  If it hasn’t done so yet, then you can count on it as you dig deeper into the Bible with them.  Now is the time to really make sure you’re side by side with them in prayer and as a show of spiritual strength they can learn from as they discover the truth about Jesus.  If they can just capture a tiny bit of whom He really is, their lives will never be the same!  God does all the work inside of their minds and hearts; we’re just pointing them in the right direction.

Remember the story of how Aaron and Hur held up the arms of Moses during his prayer to God Almighty?  You may want to share the story as a visual of you standing by their side encouraging and praying while they fight the battles of their exodus from Mormonism.

The story of Moses’ prayer and Israel’s success in the battle against Amalek will give them hope.  The passage comes from Exodus 17:1-12.  There is going to be a two-pronged lesson learned by using this passage.  The Amalekites were descendants of Esau and were the first group of people the Israelites had to fight after crossing the Red Sea. This exodus process is probably the first battle they’ll have in their new walk with Christ.

      Sharing a few tidbits of the goodness and truth found in the OT as you go along will help those put things into perspective as they learn how to cultivate and grow their relationship with our Savior.  It’s not that the Mormons are merely unaware of how to have this relationship with Jesus when they get out of Mormonism; they are actually trained not to do this as Mormons!  They believe that He was here to show that He was perfect and had to “earn” His own way to godhood.  He is their “example” for their path to their own godhood status.  Doctrines of Salvation 1:32;

“Our Savior was a God before he was born into this world, and he brought with him that same status when he came here. He was as much a God when he was born into the world as he was before.

Again, while I know that it seems I may be “beating a dead horse”, allow me to reiterate; they cannot have a personal relationship with the Jesus of the Bible, if the Mormon or ex-Mormon doesn’t know the truth about Him.

In many ways I am a visual-type student so I created a side-by-side chart comparing the doctrines of the LDS Church and the doctrines of God which I took from the Bible.

These basic teachings that I’ve chosen to list here weren’t pulled from some dusty old books that went unread for centuries or even decades.  On the contrary, the teachings I’ve listed here are just some of the things I was taught and buried deep in my heart while growing up as a sixth generation Mormon in Ogden, Utah.

Please note that while it may seem there are a few rabbit trails that I wander off on, remember that everything the Mormon knows is a lie; and I mean everything.  While the Bible talks about the Israelites going to battle against Amalek; in the Book of Mormon the Amalekites are the good guys in scriptural history.  Your sharing a small tidbit from the OT will be rich for them.

One integral part of Mormonism that you’ll want to address is Jesus’ name.  The Mormons only refer to Him as Christ, rarely by His given name of Jesus.  Explain to the Mormon that the word Christ is a title, not a name.  The first place in the Bible you’ll find this word is in Matthew 1:1;  “The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

In the Greek the word Christ is “Christos” and it means; the Messiah or anointed one.  It is from the Hebrew, Meshiah.   Also notice that listing the genealogy of Jesus establishes His right to the throne as it is evidence He came from the royal line of David.

Again, we’ll be looking at Matthew 1:1, as it is the first time the name of Jesus is mentioned. “The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.” Jesus is the Greek (and Latin) form of this name while it was originally of Hebrew origin.  In the Hebrew the name is Yehowshuwa (Joshua).  It means he will save; the deliverer; the Lord is salvation.  The name Yehowshuwa originally came from the name Yehovah (Jehovah).  This is the Jewish national name of God and it is understood that Jehovah is self-Existent or Eternal and that He is God.

LDS doctrine says that Jesus is Jehovah but they’ve also been taught to believe that Jesus (Jehovah) is not the same as ‘elohim’ (heavenly father).  They are taught that the godhead is made up of three distinct personages.

One of the ways Mormons have stripped Jesus’ personal identity from Him is by not referring to Him by His given name.  This way they don’t have to deal with the reality of whom He really was for the Israelites and who He became for the Gentiles.  Jehovah – He will save.  Not me, not you, not your spouse, nothing, nobody.  Jehovah will save.

Isn’t it strange they “play the same game” with their missionaries?  They’ve stripped their identities from them as well.  They go out as nameless faces with a suit, tie and nametag.  Whenever I speak with the missionaries I insist they give me their first names as this is how they are identified.  They wear their nametags stating they are “Elder so and so” and since they can’t all be named “Elder”, I break the ice using this method of making it personal for them.

So now we have established what the name “Jesus” means and what the word “Christ” means.  This is the foundation from where we begin to build our truth from this point forward.  Jesus is God who saves and will deliver.  Jesus is also the Messiah.

Encourage the new ex-Mormon they can now have a relationship that is built on a first name basis with Him!  If they haven’t done so yet, now would be a good time to pray with them to accept Jesus into their life.  At the end of this booklet is a copy of the “Romans Road”.  It is a group of scriptures to read and understand how to be saved.

Another suggestion would be to share with the ex-Mormon a few of the prophecies in the Old Testament about Jesus.  There are 333 prophecies about Jesus from the OT and every single one of them came true!  In Isaiah chapter 53 there are 48 prophecies about Jesus; from His mission to the way He would die are all in that one chapter of only twelve verses.  These are the things the Mormon has never heard of before.  Even on Easter their services are filled with stories of Joseph Smith and nothing about Jesus, the cross or the resurrection.

A couple that had visited Kirk and I a few years back shared their last Easter experience with us at the LDS Church.  They wanted so badly that Sunday to sit and hear about Jesus and actually told their two daughters to get excited to hear the news!  The only time they heard Jesus’ name mentioned was at the end of the perfunctory prayers they use at the end of taking Sacrament and when the bishop ended his talk he used Jesus’ name as a salutation.

That was it – they heard nothing about Jesus, the crucifixion or His resurrection.  No mention of the last supper, Judas’ betrayal or the incident in the Garden of Gethsemane when the disciples kept falling asleep; no mention of the trial, the scourging or the glorious and triumphant victory over death.  How sad for this family and what a letdown for their future outlook of the lives they’re expending on this false christ.

 LESSON PLAN FOR CHAPTER FOUR

1 – Name four LDS teachings about Jesus that weren’t listed in this chapter.  Refute the LDS’ doctrine you just listed by using Scripture.  (Don’t forget to use your skills of picking out “key words”.  You can get other facts from the website of www.lds.org)

5 – What new teaching about Jesus was the ex-Mormon most shocked about?  Show a scripture from the Bible to refute the LDS teaching.  As always –we use scripture to claim authority over the lies of Satan and to help the ex-Mormon see that it was a “real teaching” not just something they made up on their own!

6 – What teaching about Jesus in the LDS Church does the ex-Mormon miss the most and why?  Be sure this is a doctrine, not a tradition or something from the heritage/culture of Mormonism.  There are categories that seem to be intertwined at places that can’t be unwoven, but for now see what you can do with this one.  We’ll be addressing different culture subjects later in this study.

Chapter Four:

LDS CHURCH

Jesus was Great High Priest and Adam next:

Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pg. 158; “How have we come at the Priesthood in the last days? It came down, down, in regular succession. Peter, James, and John had it given to them and they gave it to others. Christ is the Great High Priest; Adam next…

Jesus is Only Begotten according to the flesh:

Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pg. 323; “Jesus Christ is the heir of this Kingdom—the Only Begotten of the Father according to the flesh, and holds the keys over all this world.”

The phrase “according to the flesh” is code talk meaning “through a sexual union”.

Jesus is our elder brother:

Encyclopedia of Mormonism, pg. 724; “In the premortal life, Jesus Christ, whose main title was Jehovah, was the firstborn spirit child of God the Father and thus the eldest brother and preeminent above all other spirit children of God. In that first estate, he came to be more intelligent than all other spirits, one “like unto God” (Abr. 3:19, 24), and served as the representative of the Father in the creation of “worlds without number” (Heb. 1:1-3; D&C 76:24; Moses 1:33; 7:30).

Jesus and the cross:

Doctrines of Salvation 1:130; “We speak of the passion of Jesus Christ. A great many people have an idea that when he was on the cross, and nails were driven into his hands and feet, that was his great suffering. His great suffering was before he ever was placed upon the cross. It was in the Garden of Gethsemane that the blood oozed from the pores of his body…”

Jesus and Lucifer are brothers:

Gospel Through the Ages, pg. 15; “The appointment of Jesus to be the Savior of the world was contested by one of the other sons of God. He was called Lucifer, son of the morning.”

Also see Jesus the Christ, pg. 8; “Thus it is shown that prior to the placing of man upon the earth, how long before we do not know, Christ and Satan, together with the hosts of the spirit-children of God, existed as intelligent individuals.”

Jesus is not our friend:

The Apostle Bruce McConkie said this in a speech at BYU in March 1982;

Another peril is that those so involved often begin to pray directly to Christ because of some special friendship they feel has been developed. In this connection a current and unwise book, which advocates gaining a special relationship with Jesus, contains this sentence: Because the Savior is our mediator, our prayers go through Christ to the Father, and the Father answers our prayers through his Son. This is plain sectarian nonsense.

“Lord Increase Our Faith”, page 64; “The real focus on the Book of Mormon should be on the details of the book itself, not on the details of the process by which it came forth.  Although we do not know everything about the process of its coming forth or its translation, the Book of Mormon is open to full scrutiny.” – Neal A. Maxwell

Ensign, May 2007, pg. 88; “This ancient volume of holy scriptures is a sacred companion to the Bible, containing the fulness of the everlasting gospel of Jesus Christ.” – L. Tom Perry

My objective in this article is for members of the LDS Church to ponder the information presented here and honestly ask themselves if it makes sense the Book of Mormon is from God.  While I don’t agree with Mr. Maxwell’s opinion on how people should view the Book of Mormon (Galatians 1:6-9), we’re going to take him up on what he said about it being open to full scrutiny.

All right, so I have an obsession with the book of Jeremiah; I’ll be the first to admit it!  If you’re a Mormon, have you ever read the book of Jeremiah?  There’s an important lesson to be learned in Jeremiah 36:20-32.  King Jehoiakim had decided he didn’t like God’s written word so he cut it up and burned it thinking that would take care of God, but he was sorely mistaken.

I believe it was Matthew Henry who said “Those who hate it always seem to do things like this in life” …they either try to destroy or discredit God’s very words.

It was 600 BC and the prophet Jeremiah had been warning the Israelites for forty years that danger was lurking.  He told them God had an important message He wanted for them to hear and if they obeyed Him they wouldn’t lose their lives.  Times would be tough, but if they fled for Egypt on their own seeking safety, they would die by sword, famine or pestilence.  If they stayed put in Jerusalem (Jer. 42:10) God would protect their lives in the upcoming onslaught of the Babylonian takeover.  While they were in captivity for a time, there was a small remnant that was allowed to remain seventy years later.

The certifiably insane King Nebuchadnezzar (descendant of Queen of Sheba and Solomon) marched the Israelites out of Jerusalem, chained some of them nude alongside a river while partying on a boat nearby and eventually went totally mad, living with animals.  He too hated God and turned the sacred scrolls into sacks filled with sand for the captive Israelites to carry into Egypt.  No one escaped his wrath.  (Eventually Nebuchadnezzar repented and worshipped God.)

Now some 2,400 years later we have the story of Joseph Smith and the “golden plates” which he said contains the “fullness of the gospel”, otherwise known as the Book of Mormon.  One of the remarkable events about this story is the timeline.  It’s the story of a lost tribe of Israelites fleeing Jerusalem in 600 BC and guess what?  Yep, they’re headin’ for Egypt, seeking safety from the fall of Jerusalem.

Okay, foregoing the arguments, let’s say God told everyone but this lost tribe of “Nephites” to stay put in Jerusalem; what about Joseph Smith’s other assertion about the Book of Mormon?

He said a lot of things about this work so his claims should be investigated as Mr. Maxwell suggests.  It’d be amazing if anyone escaped the wrath of Nebuchadnezzar, so these plates should be of significant value if true, right?

What do these brass plates tell us?  Does the Book of Mormon contain the “fullness of the gospel”?  Remember, parts of these plates are supposedly what the Nephites hauled over to the States when they sailed here.

Let’s begin with what Doctrine and Covenants 19:26, 27:5 and 135:3 says:

And again, I command thee that thou shalt not covet thine own property, but impart it freely to the printing of the Book of Mormon, which contains the truth and the word of God—

Behold, this is wisdom in me; wherefore, marvel not, for the hour cometh that I will drink of the fruit of the vine with you on the earth, and with Moroni, whom I have sent unto you to reveal the Book of Mormon, containing the fulness of my everlasting gospel, to whom I have committed the keys of the record of the stick of Ephraim.

Joseph Smith, the Prophet and Seer of the Lord, has done more, save Jesus only, for the salvation of men in this world, than any other man that ever lived in it. In the short space of twenty years, he has brought forth the Book of Mormon, which he translated by the gift and power of God, and has been the means of publishing it on two continents; has sent the fulness of the everlasting gospel, which it contained, to the four quarters of the earth…

As you can see, we have confirmation through the prophecies above; the Church does believe it’s the “fullness of the gospel”.  Now in light of those prophecies by Smith, we need to compare them with what the Bible says about prophets and prophecies, in addition to looking at a few core Mormon doctrines and see if they’re in the Book of Mormon.  If they’re not found on those plates, we ask in all sincerity – how can this be the fullness of the gospel if it doesn’t contain all the requirements for salvation?

What the Bible Says:

Deuteronomy 18:20-22; “But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.  21 And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken?  22 When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.”

Deuteronomy 13:1-5; “If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, 2 And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; 3 Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. 4 Ye shall walk after the LORD your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him.  5 And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death; because he hath spoken to turn you away from the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, to thrust thee out of the way which the LORD thy God commanded thee to walk in. So shalt thou put the evil away from the midst of thee.

Mormons believe a true and full salvation can only be attained in the highest kingdom of heaven which they call the “Celestial Kingdom”.  The Celestial Kingdom is reserved solely for those who have been found worthy enough to become a god themselves after they have accomplished a number of works here on earth.  Below are a handful of requirements and beliefs each Mormon needs for a true salvation in the Mormon Church.

What the Mormon Church Says:

Church Government

3 Nephi 12 says the twelve Nephite apostles received power to share the gospel, baptize and give the gift of the Holy Ghost.  This is the closest we come to anything remotely close to the hierarchy we see in the Mormon Church today.

There is no “first presidency”, no quorum of the seventies, no bishops, no bishopric, no wards, no branches, no stakes and no stake presidents, no area presidency…compare it with what the Bible says about church structure:

1 Corinthians 10:32, 12:9-10, 18, 29, 30; Acts 13:1, Romans 12:8, Ephesians 2:20, 3:5, 4:11

As the reader can plainly see, not one of those core doctrinal teachings is in the Book of Mormon.  The list here is brief in comparison to the hordes of all their teachings.  What we’ve presented here is enough to show the Book of Mormon certainly doesn’t stand up to the claims Joseph Smith and other Church leaders have made.

How can the Book of Mormon contain the “fullness of the gospel” if their teachings are not to be found in the Book of Mormon?

If you’re LDS we want you to know that we pray diligently for you each and every day.  We hope you’ll investigate these claims for yourself and see that God is not a God of confusion as it says in 1 Cor. 14:33.  Ask yourself and your leaders why there is such a huge contradiction in what D&C says and what the Book of Mormon doesn’t say.

With Love in Christ;

Michelle

foundationsIn the spring of ’92 I was expecting my third child in four years and wondering how many more babies I’d have to give birth to before the Mormon god would accept me.  Half way through my pregnancy I went out for a walk with my 14 month old daughter Jacqui and noticed a couple of women about my age standing outside chatting with each other.

As I got closer I saw one of the women wearing a cross necklace.  I thought of it as another opportunity to find out more about the all elusive cross that as a Mormon I was told not to worry about and directly told not to have in our homes.

The questions I asked Nancy set into motion the things I should have done years before.  It had been a long road for me in the eleven years between the time I left Utah and Seattle.  I had traveled the world, lived in many places throughout the states and quite frankly, I was tired.  I was tired of trying to live up to the demands of what I had learned in my Mormon life of what it meant to go to heaven.
