Years ago there was a game show on television called Truth or Consequences. Ralph Edwards hosted the follies of what would happen when people didn’t give the right answer to some off the wall question being asked.  As it was, nothing tragic would happen if the contestant couldn’t answer the question fast enough in the time allotted, but they would have to perform some stupid stunt.  It was a very benign and harmless way to spend an evening watching the antics of those on television several decades ago.

Curse of Cain

Way to Perfection, pg. 106; “President Woodruff, in his journal, records the words of President Young as follows:  The Lord said, I will not kill Cain, but I will put a mark upon him, and that mark will be seen upon the face of every negro upon the face of the earth; and it is the decree of God that that mark shall remain upon the seed of Cain until the seed of Abel shall be redeemed, and Cain shall not receive the Priesthood, until the time of that redemption. Any man having one drop of the seed of Cain in him cannot receive the Priesthood; but the day will come when all that race will be redeemed and possess all the blessings which we now have. – History of Wilford Woodruff, p. 351.” – Joseph Fielding Smith

Council of gods

Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pg. 348; “I will transpose and simplify it in the English language. Oh, ye lawyers, ye doctors, and ye priests, who have persecuted me, I want to let you know that the Holy Ghost knows something as well as you do. The head God called together the Gods and sat in grand council to bring forth the world. The grand councilors sat at the head in yonder heavens and contemplated the creation of the worlds which were created at the time. When I say doctors and lawyers, I mean the doctors and lawyers of the Scriptures. I have done so hitherto without explanation, to let the lawyers flutter and everybody laugh at them. Some learned doctors might take a notion to say the Scriptures say thus and so; and we might believe the Scriptures; they are not to be altered. But I am going to show you an error in them.”

Who was Adam in the pre-existence?

Doctrines of Salvation 1:90; “The first man placed upon the earth was a perfect being, a son of God. He was Michael, the Archangel, who had reached great distinction and power before he ever came to this earth; and who helped to frame this earth while he was yet a spirit, just as our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was a spirit before he was born in Bethlehem.  Michael, after being placed upon this earth, is known as Adam.”

What are the “robes of righteousness” to a member of the LDS Church?

Encyclopedia of Mormonism, pg. 535; “In a Messianic passage Isaiah declared: “I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness” (Isa. 61:10). In the current dispensation, the principle has been reaffirmed in prophetic idiom: “Zion must increase in beauty,…and put on her beautiful garments” (D&C 82:14). Latter-day Saints believe that all such clothing is symbolic of the submission, sanctification, and spotless purity of those who desire to serve God and Christ and ultimately regain their eternal presence (D&C 61:34; 135:5).”

Who is Heavenly Father’s father?

The Seer by Orson Pratt, p. 132; “We were begotten by our Father in heaven; the person of our Father in Heaven was begotten on a previous heavenly world by His Father; and again, He was begotten by still a more ancient Father ….”

Pre-existence

Discourses of Brigham Young, pg. 58; “We had an existence before we came into the world. Our spirits came here pure to take these tabernacles; they came to occupy them as habitations, with the understanding that all that had passed previously to our coming here should be taken away from us, that we should not know anything about it. 3:367.”

John 3:13; “And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.”

Thought of the Day about Mormonism and Christian Behavior

Mitt Romney, Mark DeMoss at BYU and “True Christians”

Today I received a link to a story in the Salt Lake Tribune.  Lo and behold there was another evangelical telling me (and millions of other people) that evangelicals can’t “attack and demean Mormons or President Barack Obama and still consider yourself a follower of Jesus Christ”.

God Created You to Become a god

Discourses of Brigham Young, pg. 57; “The Lord created you and me for the purpose of becoming Gods like himself; when we have been proved in our present capacity, and have been faithful with all things he puts into our possession.”

1 Cor. 1:9; “God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Mormonism and the Washington Post

Today I received an e-mail from my good friend Ed Decker asking me to post a comment on the blog site for The Washington Post.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/on-faith/post/mormonisms-modern-day-problem/2012/01/22/gIQApCeiJQ_blog.html

In an article written by one of their reporters, Sally Quinn, she related a conversation she had with one of her friends she described as a “liberal atheist”. This conversation between the two of them was focused on why people who are religious are weird and why Smith’s religion is too new for anyone to believe it. I can appreciate their conversation because I used to think and feel the exact same way.

The Golden Plates of Mormonism

Encyclopedia of Mormonism, pg. 555;While the plates were in Joseph’s keeping, others saw them, including eleven witnesses whose testimonies appear in all editions of the book.  Various descriptions provided by eyewitnesses suggest that the plates may have been made of a gold alloy, measured about 6 inches by 8 inches (15.2 cm by 20.3 cm), were 6 inches (15.2 cm) thick, and weighed about 50 pounds (22.7 kg).

Mosiah 8:9;And for a testimony that the things that they had said are true they have brought twenty-four plates which are filled with engravings, and they are of pure gold.

Today we’re looking at the gold plates and Joseph Smith’s character.  Where are the plates today?  Were they made of gold or something resembling gold?  The many descriptions of the plates remind me of Joseph Smith.  Some say he was the real deal just as those plates, while others tell a story of a man that looks good on the outside, but when you get up close it becomes clear all that glitters isn’t gold.

Necromancy in Mormon Temples

Journal of Discourses 19:229-230; “The dead will be after you, they will seek after you as they have after us in St. George. They called upon us, knowing that we held the keys and power to redeem them. I will here say, before closing, that two weeks before I left St. George, the spirits of the dead gathered around me, wanting to know why we did not redeem them.” – Wilford Woodruff

Shame on you Franklin Graham for supporting Mitt Romney!

I think back to all the years I volunteered for your father’s crusades and they had me help the ministry in warning people about Mormonism and helping Mormons come out of that cult and you endorse him again on ABC News tonight with David Muir.

We’re praying Mr. Graham reevaluates the path he’s chosen to take and publicly recants his words.

The Book of Commandments and the Doctrine and Covenants Compared

Today’s dilemma is a side by side example of changes made when the Church rewrote the Book of Commandments and renamed it the Doctrine and Covenants.  This particular revelation was given by Joseph Smith to Oliver Cowdery in April 1829.  Cowdery, hoping God would allow him to be the scribe for Smith, asked Smith if God had any special message for him personally.

The Bible and Another Gospel

In the January 2011 edition of the Ensign I came across an article entitled “The Scriptures Teach and Testify of Jesus Christ”.

http://lds.org/ensign/2011/01/the-scriptures-teach-and-testify-of-jesus-christ?lang=eng

What I found interesting in this article is the manipulative way the Church goes about confusing its members.  At the onset of this article it says “The main purpose of the scriptures is to testify of Christ, helping us come unto Him and receive eternal life (see John 5:39).

Thought of the Day about Mormonism

Their Advertising Campaign for Mitt and Jon

According to the NY Times in November 2011, the Mormons hired two big name advertising agencies in 2009, Ogilvy and Mather and Hall and Partners, to gather info on what people thought of Mormons.  For those who answered in the focus groups they found that if they had any opinion at all it was negative, listing their reasons as ““secretive”, “cultish”, “sexist”, “controlling”, “pushy”, and “anti-gay””.  http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/18/us/mormon-ad-campaign-seeks-to-improve-perceptions.html?pagewanted=all

How God Created Man

Journal of Discourses 11:122-123; “God has made His children like Himself to stand erect, and has endowed them with intelligence and power and dominion over all His works, and given them the same attributes which He himself possesses. He created man, as we create our children; for there is no other process of creation in heaven, on the earth, in the earth, or under the earth, or in all the eternities, that is, that were, or that ever will be.” – Brigham Young,

According to Mormonism, was Jesus Created?

Yes.

Encyclopedia of Mormonism, pg. 548; “Yet God the Father is not one in substance with the Son or the Holy Spirit, but is a separate being. The Father existed prior to the Son and the Holy Ghost and is the source of their divinity. In classical terms, LDS theology is subordinationist; that is, it views the Son and the Holy Ghost as subordinate to and dependent upon God the Eternal Father. They are his offspring. Thus Joseph Smith referred to the Father as “God the first” to emphasize his priority in the Godhead (TPJS, p. 190).”

When does the Spirit Physically Arrive to People?

Promptings of the Sprit, pg. 83; “There are also certain activities that encourage heaven to grant that initial, clear, and unmistakable outpouring of the Spirit. Some examples are as follows: reading the Book of Mormon, reading other scriptures, attending regular Church meetings, missionary work, service to others, temple work, family gatherings, visiting the sick and shut-ins, writing in our journals, and other righteous pursuits. Anything that is praiseworthy, lovely, or of good report encourages the presence of the Spirit. The Lord is eager to bless us as we are actively engaged in worthy pursuits. However, studying the Book of Mormon is surely at the top of the list.”
