Joseph Smith and Jesus Compared

Luke 22:54-23:33 is the focus of this article and for the sake of space we ask that you open your own Bibles to read along as we point out the significant events that took place in Jesus’ last few days of life here on earth.

Through Jesus’ death God manifested His great love for us and introduced to mankind that grace was available to all – no matter the tribe or race you belonged!  The grace of God brought with it a new lifestyle that was freer than anyone had previously known.

scalesWorks became an outward expression of our love for God and the concept that we had to work for salvation was nailed to the cross Jesus hung upon.

With these things in mind we turn our attention to what mankind can do in the name of God when he chooses to pervert truth and attempts to take the focus off the Creator.

At the time of this writing it is December 2005.  During this great season of looking to God who gave us His Son, we are also striving to keep the LDS Church’s focus placed in the right direction.

Martyrdom of Joseph Smith

Carthage shootout Martyrdom:  the act of extreme suffering; torment.

Martyr:  a person who willingly suffers death rather than renounce his or her religion.  One who makes great sacrifices or suffers much in order to further a belief, cause or principle.

The definitions of martyr and martyrdom above will serve as the foundation of what we’re looking at today for this subject matter.  The Mormon Church has emphatically defended their position that Joseph Smith fulfilled the requirements of martyrdom.  I thought it’d behoove us to look at how people in history have indeed become martyrs for the Lord and compare those alongside the case of Joseph Smith.

Joseph Smith and Warren Jeffs Compared

On August 29, 2006, Warren Steed Jeffs, prophet of the FLDS Church, was arrested just outside of Las Vegas after being pulled over on a routine traffic stop by the Nevada Highway Patrol.  He had been on the FBI’s Top Ten Most Wanted List since May.

I don’t know how many times since I heard the above news that I have stopped to wonder what must be going through the minds of the followers of the FLDS Church, headquartered on the border of southern Utah and northern Arizona.

Moroni or Nephi, Who Visited Joseph that Night?

What do you think?  Could both stories be true?

Introductory page of D&C 1976, 3rd paragraph; This took place in the early spring of 1820.  In September, 1823, and at later times, Joseph Smith received visitations from Moroni, an angel of light, who revealed the resting place of the ancient record from which The Book of Mormon was afterward translated.

Joseph Smith History 1:32-33; The room was exceedingly light, but not so very bright as immediately around his person. When I first looked upon him, I was afraid; but the fear soon left me.  33 He called me by name, and said unto me that he was a messenger sent from the presence of God to me, and that his name was Moroni; that God had a work for me to do; and that my name should be had for good and evil…”

Times and Seasons, vol. 3 (November 1841 – October 1842): pg. 753; “The room was exceedingly light, but not so very bright as immediately around his person. When I first looked upon him I was afraid, but the fear soon left me. He called me by name, and said unto me that he was a messenger sent from the presence of God to me, and that his name was Nephi. That God had a work for me to do, and that my name should be had for good and evil…”

2 Cor. 11:13-15; For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.  14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.  15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

The warning from Paul to the Corinthians is scary and should make you want to run the other way as fast as you can!

Why would you be proud of people knowing your name for evil?

Joseph and Lucifer Compared

      While researching LDS doctrines about Joseph Smith I came across a teaching that sounded eerily familiar.  As I thought about it some more I remembered what it was.  What caught my attention is Joseph’s mission in life; it sounded very similar to Lucifer’s goal in the Mormon pre-existence.  Gospel Doctrine, pg. 481 says;

“The work in which Joseph Smith was engaged was not confined to this life alone…It is not something which relates to man only while he tabernacles in the flesh, but to the whole human family from eternity to eternity.

      Also see Journal of Discourses 7:290;

“Should not this thought comfort all people? They will, by-and-by, be a thousand times more thankful for such a man as Joseph Smith, junior, than it is possible for them to be for any earthly good whatever. It is his mission to see that all the children of men in this last dispensation are saved, that can be, through the redemption. You will be thankful, every one of you, that Joseph Smith, junior, was ordained to this great calling before the worlds were.

This thought should cause concern for every single Mormon.  As I said, it reminded me of what the Mormon Lucifer told the Mormon god in the pre-existence that got him kicked out of heaven!

Moses 4:1, 4; “And I, the Lord God, spake unto Moses, saying: That Satan, whom thou hast commanded in the name of mine Only Begotten, is the same which was from the beginning, and he came before me, saying—Behold, here am I, send me, I will be thy son, and I will redeem all mankind, that one soul shall not be lost, and surely I will do it; wherefore give me thine honor… 4 And he became Satan, yea, even the devil, the father of all lies, to deceive and to blind men, and to lead them captive at his will, even as many as would not hearken unto my voice.”

Do I think that Joseph was Satan?  No.  But I do think Satan controlled both Smith and subsequently the Church through his power.  Why would something like this be in the sacred writings of Mormonism?  I often wonder if Smith knew he was intentionally putting things like this into the doctrine of the Church…

We are told in the Bible that there is nothing new under the sun (Ecc. 1:9) and Mormonism is a classic example of this.  Satan merely rewraps the old story and puts a new shiny bow on top as his disgusting gift of lies just keeps on giving.

I don’t think the examples in this article are mere coincidences.  The coincidences can be found in practically every subject in Mormonism.  The “pillars of light” that Joseph saw in the “sacred grove” were definitely not from God.  The angel who presented “another gospel” to Joseph definitely wasn’t from God.  Yet peppered throughout the “scriptures” of Mormonism are admonitions for the people to watch out for the evil one; don’t be fooled my friend as this is a ploy to detract the follower’s attention.

     There are so many “coincidences” that it’s impossible to think of them in any way other than Satan mocking God; it’s as if he’s actually laughing in His face…  To see what I mean just take a look at what Mormon scriptures say about Satan and the angel Moroni;

2 Nephi 9:9; “And our spirits must have become like unto him, and we become devils, angels to a devil, to be shut out from the presence of our God, and to remain with the father of lies, in misery, like unto himself; yea, to that being who beguiled our first parents, who transformeth himself nigh unto an angel of light….

Introductory page of D&C, (1976 edition) says in the third paragraph “Moroni is an angel of light”.

Next, we have the example of Joseph’s experience the night Moroni, an angel of light, showed up to tell him about “another gospel”.

“After this third visit, he again ascended into heaven as before, and I was again left to ponder on the strangeness of what I had just experienced; when almost immediately after the heavenly messenger had ascended from me for the third time, the cock crowed, and I found that day was approaching, so that our interviews must have occupied the whole of that night.”

The apostle Paul warns us that Satan is slick.  2 Cor. 11:13-14; “For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. 14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

So we see that anyone can trick people by placing a title before their name and there is one more thing to look at regarding the coincidences in Mormon scripture.  Remember the passage above when Joseph claimed Moroni, the angel of light, left the room for the third time and immediately a cock crowed?  I’m sure it sounds familiar to those who know God’s word.  Jesus warned Peter that he would deny Him three times before the cock crowed.

Luke 22:34; “And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.”

Secondly, a false gospel presented three times before the cock crows and Smith had the awareness to write it down, but not know the passage in the Bible to denounce Satan?  Yeah right…

What about Galatians 1:6-9?  Could this be another coincidence or just mistranslated?

“I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: 7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.”

For another “coincidence” take a look at the later versions on the front cover of the Book of Mormon.  It calls itself

 “Another Testament of Jesus Christ”.

So the question remains; why would Joseph be given the same mission in life that Lucifer wanted to have?  Don’t you find that odd?  Why was Joseph the only one to “translate” all the works in their sacred texts and the only one who actually saw most of them?  Why all the “coincidences”, or as the Church would say many “plain and precious parts are missing”?

The questions posed here will hopefully prompt a healthy questioning process in the mind of the Mormon and in turn force them to open their Bibles to the truth of Christ Jesus.

 With Love in Christ;

Michelle

Demonic & Ungodly Names in the Book of Mormon Part 3

In the past six or so years I’ve written countless articles on many subjects regarding Mormonism, but there are a few subjects that continue to show up for another view and additional insight.  The subject of this article is my case in point.

The first time I wrote on this subject I received many horrible reviews – all by members of the Church.  The reviews that were favorable of course were from the Christians.  At the request of former Mormons and Christians I was asked to write a sequel so I acquiesced – that was three years ago.  Now I’m receiving more requests to write another so here I am again.  Glory to God for His word, the truth and His guidance!

This time we’re taking a look at Ishmael, Moab, Laban, Emer and Neum.  As you can see not all of the names are demonic, but serve as examples of the ungodliness of their names and the utter lack of information of the people involved.

DEMONIC AND UNGODLY NAMES IN THE BOOK OF MORMON Part 2

Over five years ago I wrote an article entitled ‘Demonic and Ungodly Names in the Book of Mormon’.  Since then I have been asked by numerous people to write more on this particular subject so here it is!

‘Back by popular demand’as they say,  I went through my old notes and found some other names I think would be of interest to the Mormon, and non-Mormon alike. There were more than 50 names of people and/or places contradicting what Biblical accounts report. Here are just a few of them.

 Chemish

The name of Chemish so closely resembles the name of Chemosh from the Bible, it’s hard to ignore. In Mormonism the name Chemish belongs to the brother of Ameleki. These two brothers and others, were responsible for writing the book of Omni in the Book of Mormon.

The official LDS website search engine says this about Chemish:

The book of Omni: A book translated from the small plates of Nephi in the Book of Mormon. The book has only a single chapter, which contains an account of the wars among the Nephites and Lamanites. Omni wrote only the first three verses of the book. The plates were then passed in turn to Amaron, Chemish, Abinadom, and finally Amaleki.  And it came to pass that I did deliver the plates unto my brother Chemish. He delivered the plates to King Benjamin, king of Zarahemla…”

burning in the bosom 2This article came about because of an e-mail I received last month (November 2008).  Someone wrote in to comment about another article I wrote called “Mormon Lifestyles”.

The person who wrote in kept telling me they “feel” that my article wasn’t telling the whole truth.  That part of his e-mail led into the subject we’re discussing now; feelings.

The LDS Church has taught and continues to teach it is important to rely upon your feelings to know if something is from God or if it’s not from God.  They get this from Doctrine and Covenants 9:7-9.  We want to know – is this really biblical?  It is from verse eight they get the phrase “burning in the bosom” so let’s look at this in context.

“Behold, you have not understood; you have supposed that I would give it unto you, when you took no thought save it was to ask me. 8 But, behold, I say unto you, that you must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall feel that it is right. 9 But if it be not right you shall have no such feelings, but you shall have a stupor of thought that shall cause you to forget the thing which is wrong; therefore, you cannot write that which is sacred save it be given you from me.”

The above passage is part of a supposed revelation from God to Joseph Smith meant for Oliver Cowdery.  In Latter-day Prophets and the Doctrine and Covenants 1:85 it tells us that Cowdery didn’t have sufficient faith to translate the symbols with the Urim and Thummim, thus the chastisement from the Lord.

The “commentary” on this part of Doctrine and Covenants goes into detail describing how Cowdery didn’t know his place as being a scribe and should seek out God by paying attention to the feelings in his heart.  But what of our passage mentioned above?  Are we really expected to “study it out in our minds” and then wait for a “burning in the bosom”?  If this is really the case then certainly we can find evidence of such an important subject in the Bible, right?

     Oswald Chambers once talked about “taking possession of our own soul”.  His message was taken from Luke 21:19.  He was describing the new life we live when we first get saved and as time goes by slipping back into our old selves again.  The one thing that caught my attention was when he said we shouldn’t always be blaming Satan for circumstances around us as they are usually a result of actions we take because of our moods.  Here’s an excerpt from that sermon;

“There are certain things in life that we need not pray about—moods, for instance. We will never get rid of moodiness by praying, but we will by kicking it out of our lives. Moods nearly always are rooted in some physical circumstance, not in our true inner self.

So are the “feel good feelings” from reading the Book of Mormon because it’s true, or because as my mother pointed out one day it reminds her of grandpa?  I am led to believe it’s the latter; and this of course is spiritual suicide.

     In addition to this passage the Mormon missionaries will also tell you to pray about Moroni 10:4-6;

“And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.5 And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.6 And whatsoever thing is good is just and true; wherefore, nothing that is good denieth the Christ, but acknowledgeth that he is.”

     Again, how can we trust our own heart?  What if we’re just not in the mood to go to church and worship God or do good things for those around us?  What if the feeling for being obnoxious was strong in our hearts?  These two examples are ways of denying Christ so how can you be sure of what to do without the word of God who has already established what is holy and righteous?  Proverbs 28:26 says;

“He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.”

We must distinguish nice memories in our childhood from truth and sadly enough the truth is that grandpa wasn’t leading his family into the arms of Jesus Christ.  For this topic the four key words to look at in this verse would be “trusteth”, “heart”, “fool” and “wisely”.

“Trusteth” in the Hebrew is “baòtÖach” (pronounced baw-takh’) means to “hie for refuge”.

(Isn’t it just like our Lord to place this particular word here to firmly remind us that our refuge is found in His word and absolutes?)

The Hebrew word for fool is “kesŒòyl” (pronounced kes-eel).  It means stupid or silly.

The word for heart is “leòb” (pronounced labe). It can literally mean your physical heart or in this case, your mind or intellect.

The last word is wisely.  The Hebrew word is “chokmaòh” (pronounced khok-maw’).  In the English this means wisdom or wit.

So this verse means “those who takes refuge in his own mind/intellect is stupid or silly, but those who follow with wisdom will be saved”.  Imagine; it has nothing to do with your mood, a feeling or a physical sensation!

What if the burning in the bosom is a result of hanging out with friends who are supportive when you’re following their agenda?  Dr. Walter Martin once said; “Don’t explain Christianity by experiential reasoning but through demonstrative explanation”.  I can personally vouch that goose-bump moments come and go with the wind; God’s truth stands forever.

You can read more of my “proof” on this subject in my own testimony.  It stands as a clear example that our behaviors can and do change.  In April of 1984 I actually spat on Ed Decker.  Besides being very unladylike, not to mention gross, God still performs miracles.  I hadn’t been active in the Church for two years at the point I made a lame attempt at defending Mormonism and I didn’t even agree with half of what they taught by that time.  I couldn’t articulate why I didn’t agree with it; I just knew something was wrong and I wasn’t looking forward to being eternally pregnant.  For thirty years the “burning in the bosom” fueled my behavior in defending a lie.

Christians live out their faith based on what is known, not by what they feel is right.

Here is an excerpt from my response to the person who e-mailed us.

“We make a confession of faith based on the fact that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who came here to die for our sins and then was resurrected on the third day so that we may have eternal life.  People aren’t given a “general salvation” because He died.  Those who believe are seen as pure and clean because of His death and our subsequent individual commitment made on decisions, not feelings.

Faith is different from feelings.  Faith is based upon what you know to be true.  The old adage of knowing the chair is going to withstand your weight when you sit in it is a classic example of faith.  Feelings change from day to day because of human emotions and cannot, nor should they, be trusted.”

A few questions for members of the LDS Church:

If you trust the burning in the bosom theory how do you feel about polygamy today?

How are you going to feel about it when/if you are in heaven?

How’s your spouse going to feel about it?

How do you feel knowing Joseph Smith wouldn’t be receiving a temple recommend if he was alive today?

What about blacks?

Should they be in the Church?

How do you feel with a black president?

You see, the “feeling good” standard has no standing in God’s righteous holy ways.  God is unchanging.  Now the Church members all say the same thing; “Oh the “anti’s” all beat on the same topics all the time, they can’t come up with anything new…”  The reason we “anti’s” do this is because God hasn’t changed.  His plans haven’t changed, His righteous ways haven’t changed, but mankind has changed.

Where in the Bible does God condone polygamy?

Where in the Bible does God condemn the black race?

Where in the Bible did God say it was okay to murder babies?

Abortion is murder so why is it acceptable in this world and even in Mormonism?

Ensign, November 1998, pg. 71; Abortion is an ugly thing, a debasing thing, a thing which inevitably brings remorse and sorrow and regret…While we denounce it, we make allowance in such circumstances as when pregnancy is the result of incest or rape, when the life or health of the mother is judged by competent medical authority to be in serious jeopardy, or when the fetus is known by competent medical authority to have serious defects that will not allow the baby to survive beyond birth.

If by this standard I had followed the counsel of doctors and the leaders in my church (LDS), my kids wouldn’t be here.  In the summer of 1990 military doctors told me to abort my oldest daughter Jacqui, she’s seventeen years old now.  They were convinced they couldn’t find a steady heartbeat for two appointments in a row.  They felt that something could be wrong with her future health.  Jacqui was born with her father’s engineering mind, graduates from high school this year and is planning on attending college in Germany to become a missionary for troubled teens.  She is working towards her pilot’s license, plays violin and the guitar.  She started a Bible study at the public school she attends after years of it being non-existent.  I cannot imagine my life without her presence each day and aside from an occasional cold, she’s in perfect health.

Axi, my sixteen year old would also be dead.  She gets straight A’s, sings in choir at school, sings and plays piano for the youth group at church, attends Bible studies and is a source of joy every day of my life.  Her crime?  In 1992 Axi was born with a cleft lip and palate and a slight heart murmur.  The doctors told me it’d be understandable if I chose to abort and would arrange for my wishes to be carried through.  Because a test for Lyme disease came back with a false positive they were convinced she’d have horrible birth defects and serious problems.

God tells us in Exodus 20:13 “Thou shalt not kill”; this of course is the sixth commandment!  By the way, the Lyme disease test showed a false positive because I have Multiple Sclerosis.

What if I had felt it’d be too much for me to bear?

What about Axi?

What about God?

God knows and understands the daily emotional mountains we face each day, that’s why He gave us His word.  Psalm 119:105 says; “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”  (The first verse Jacqui memorized.)  His promises are meant to be a constant source of comfort to us when life presents us with new emotions or questions.  The Bible isn’t just a source of mistranslated old works.  God has given you a gift and the Mormon Church has tricked you into believing it’s a mistake!

You must test the Mormon “scripture” and see if it lines up with what God says in the Bible.  If it doesn’t then you must walk away, as difficult as that may be and usually is, God will give you peace that passes understanding; I’m living proof!  Phil. 4:7.

Now even more important than our mortal life is the eternal life that’s at stake when we place our trust in our own heart.  While murder is obviously a horrible sin it pales in comparison to living outside of God’s presence for eternity just because you trusted in your own feelings.

If you’re LDS please know that we’re praying for you and know also that you’re not alone!

With Love in Christ;

Sixteen Points of a True Church

This article is actually an e-mail I received from a group of Mormons and my response to them.  My response is in blue.  I’ve prayed for this group of Mormons since the day I received this note a few years ago and haven’t received a response from them since.  This will actually serve as a good example of how the Mormon mind really works.  I didn’t correct any of their grammar or spelling, but when they used scripture references I did add the text of the scripture to make it easier for the reader to follow along.  So here we go!

This letter to you all may not be organized in a very well-put-together fashion, put I would like you to read this, and if ANY of you can prove to me that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a false religion, I, and about 10-15 others have decided that we will leave the LDS Church. I would just like to say, it is true, and it WILL NEVER be false.

It sounds like you’ve already made up your mind about the Church so I pray you’ll be objective enough to research the findings I present here.

To all people who think that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is a cult, or is not Christian. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) or more commonly known as the “Mormon church” is thought of as a cult and not Christian. That is not true. It is not a cult, and it is Christian.

Do you believe Jesus is God incarnate who came to this earth to die and pay the penalty for your sins on the cross?  This is part of what defines a Christian.  Or do you believe he is the spirit brother of Lucifer and a created being who volunteered to be the savior while in a meeting of the council of gods?  Below are three examples from each side.

John 1:1, 14;In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

John 15:13; Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

Colossians 2:13-14; And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; 14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross.

Ephesians 2:16; And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby.

Mormon Doctrine of Deity, pg. 264; When the time came that his first-born, the Savior, should come into the world and take a tabernacle, the Father came himself and favored that spirit with a tabernacle instead of letting any other man do it. The Savior was begotten by the Father of his spirit, by the same Being who is the Father of our spirits, and that is all the organic difference between Jesus Christ and you and me.

D&C 19:18-19; Which suffering caused myself, even God, the greatest of all, to tremble because of pain, and to bleed at every pore, and to suffer both body and spirit—and would that I might not drink the bitter cup, and shrink—19 Nevertheless, glory be to the Father, and I partook and finished my preparations unto the children of men.

Jesus the Christ, pg. 8; “Thus it is shown that prior to the placing of man upon the earth, how long before we do not know, Christ and Satan, together with the hosts of the spirit-children of God, existed as intelligent individuals, possessing power and opportunity to choose the course they would pursue and the leaders whom they would follow and obey.” – Apostle James Talmage

Here are some factors that people say are characteristic of a cult; which many claim the Church of Jesus Christ to be. None of which apply to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Members swear total allegiance to an all-powerful leader who they believe to be the Messiah.

Members don’t necessarily have to believe the leader is the Messiah.  They will however believe the words of their leader in regards to who he/she says the Messiah might be.

 In the publication Ward Teaching “Improvement Era”, 1945, Vol. Xlviii, 1945, No.6, pg. 354; it says;

When our leaders speak, the thinking has been done. When they propose a plan—it is God’s plan. When they point the way, there is no other which is safe. When they give direction, it should mark the end of controversy. God works in no other way. To think otherwise, without immediate repentance, may cost one his faith, may destroy his testimony, and leave him a stranger to the kingdom of God.” – George Albert Smith, Eighth President/Prophet of the LDS Church

This should concern every single member of the Church.  And if you believe I’ve pulled this out of context from some obscure place here is a list of the other times leaders have reiterated this thought:

Doctrines of Salvation 1:243;SAINTS SAFE IN FOLLOWING CHURCH AUTHORITIES. No man ever went astray by following the counsel of the authorities of the Church. No man who ever followed the teachings or took advice or counsel from one who stands as the representative of the Lord ever went astray; but men who refused to accept counsel have gone astray and into forbidden paths, and in some instances have even denied the faith.

Apostle Bruce R. McConkie, Conference Report, October 1984, p. 104;No true Latter-day Saint will ever take a stand that is in opposition to what the Lord has revealed to those who direct the affairs of his earthly kingdom. No Latter-day Saint who is true and faithful in all things will ever pursue a course, or espouse a cause, or publish an article or book that weakens or destroys faith.

Speech at BYU “Accepting Divine Counsel”, Roy W. Doxey, July 30, 1974; But I had thought I might give you just a little different turn to that great sermon on the unity in the Church of Christ. I thought I might point out that our gospel comes in one package. We may not choose a particular thing that we like and ignore everything else, nor submerge nor subdue it. . . . We may not, I repeat, say to ourselves, nor to one another, that this is the important thing or that is the important thing, the others being nonessential or unessential. We have no right to draw distinctions and differences among the commandments of God.

What if truth contradicts what Church leaders tell you?  What will you personally do?  Will you follow Jesus whom you say that you love, or will the words of the current prophet outweigh the words of God Himself?

 2.  Rational thought is discouraged or forbidden.

Yes, this is usually the case. See LDS examples I’ve listed above in #1.  In addition, there are these comments from other leaders of the Church:

Messenger and Advocate, Vol. 1 (October 1834-September 1835): pg. 9;That principle which actuates the children of men to revile, ridicule, calumniate and destroy the peace of one another, because they take the liberty to think for themselves in matters of religion, is certainly from beneath, and not from above…

“The Mantle is Far, Far Greater Than the Intellect”, 1981, BYU Studies, Vol. 21, No. 3, pp. 259-271; Church history can be so interesting and so inspiring as to be a very powerful tool indeed for building faith. If not properly written or properly taught, it may be a faith destroyer.”
“There is a temptation for the writer or the teacher of Church history to want to tell everything, whether it is worthy or faith promoting or not.”

Some things that are true are not very useful.
“That historian or scholar who delights in pointing out the weaknesses and frailties of present or past leaders destroys faith. A destroyer of faith — particularly one within the Church, and more particularly one who is employed specifically to build faith — places himself in great spiritual jeopardy. He is serving the wrong master, and unless he repents, he will not be among the faithful in the eternities. … Do not spread disease germs!” – Boyd K. Packer

3. The cult’s recruitment techniques are often deceptive.

This is always the case.  In response to this tell me, when was the last time the missionaries told a prospective member that the church believes they can become gods, or the everlasting covenant is polygamy (D&C 132:4-7) and eternal godhood (D&C 76:53-58)?

4. The cult weakens the follower psychologically by making him or her depend upon the group to solve his or her problems.

I would agree.   Here are a couple of comments from former temple worthy Mormons who were in the Church. Melissa was a Mormon for thirteen years and Emily for eleven:

“I did feel this way. Everything went through the filter of Mormonism for me, I couldn’t think independently. For me it was never “what would Jesus do”, it was “what would the church tell me to do”.  – Melissa Grimes

“I remember feeling that way to a certain degree.” – Emily B.

5. The cult leader makes all the career and life decision of the members.

Not always.

 6. Cults exist only for their own material survival and make false promises to work to improve society.

The first part of that statement is true.  The second part is not always true.

7. Cult members are isolated from the outside world and any reality testing it could provide.

It’s not like all cults are hidden away deep in the hills somewhere.  They’re all around.  They’re your neighbors, teachers, doctors, police officers, etc.

8. Cults are antiwoman, antichild, and antifamily.

I haven’t seen a cult yet that is anti-child.  I’ve seen a lot that are women haters or men haters though.  And by the way, most cults use family themes to make them seem honorable and safe.

9. Cults, particularly in regard to their finances, are shrouded in secrecy.

Now think about this.  When was the last time you personally were privy to the LDS church’s finance reports?  Have you ever seen a financial report from the LDS Church?  They publish a lot of stories on how much money they’ve spent for disaster reliefs, yet the last time the LDS Church published a financial report for its members was in 1959.

 10. There is frequently an aura of or potential for violence around cults.

That’s not always the case.  What we see on television are the sensationalistic cults that come and go with the wind.  Most cults are very subservient type of people who wouldn’t harm a fly.

Many of you try to use these statistics and facts against the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I do no know why, because it sounds ridiculous.

Statistics/Facts on the Mormons

1. As of 1/22/93, Mormons have over 46,000 missionary’s world wide.

-There is actually more than that now, many more, but why should that matter? Many Christian churches have missionaries, many missionaries.

Specifically, who is doing this?  Do you feel someone is out to get you and if so, why?

Typically those who are not Mormon find it interesting the Church has so many; while the Body of Christ as a whole doesn’t advertise their numbers of missionaries, it doesn’t mean there aren’t thousands out there as well.

And if you want real stats why not visit the sites of other denominations to find out what they say instead of just accusing them of something that’s not true?

I also find it interesting you used the word “facts”.  I can only speak for myself, but that is what I use – facts.  I’m not in the business of broad brushing a character assassination against a group of people with generalizations.

2. Current membership is 8.3 million world wide.

-It is now over 12 million, and that should not matter either.

We’re not concerned about the numbers.  We’re concerned about your soul.  But since you brought it up…did you know the Church keeps names on the roles until the age of 110 whether they’re alive or not?  Were you aware they do not stop counting the numbers of people who have left the Church?  How is that truthful?  You’re reporting false numbers, doesn’t that bother you?

You can get lots of great stats about the Church from an active Mormon at the link here:

http://www.cumorah.com

3. They abstain from alcohol, tobacco, tea and coffee.

-Yes, and they live, on average, 15 years longer than most people who do not abstain from those substances.

The reason this is brought up is because of D&C 49.  It goes against what Paul says to the believers in the second chapter of Colossians.  Paul told us not to listen to people telling you what you can and can’t drink or eat.  The people telling you how to eat or drink are trying to be controlling and religious.

There’s nothing wrong with taking care of yourself, our concern is that you’re being told you could go to hell if you don’t obey the laws of man and it’s simply not true!

4. According to Jerald and Sandra Tanner, there have been over 4,000 changes in today’s version from the original 1830 Book of Mormon.

-Yes, ACCORDING to the Tanners, who are known anti-Mormons.

First of all, haven’t you read any material published by the Church addressing the changes that have been made to both the Book of Mormon and the D&C?  They come from Church approved websites such as the Maxwell Institute and www.lds.org  Fascinating read.

Secondly, what do the Tanners have to do with anything?  It is your Church that has made the changes, not the Tanners.  I would be happy to show you a copy of the original Book of Mormon published in 1830 and have you compare it to today’s Book of Mormon.  The changes are not typographical errors.  They are all changes that have been made to the context of the writings.

Here are just a few examples:

1830 Book of Mormon:

1 Nephi, pg. 25; “Behold the Lamb of God, yea, even the Eternal Father!”

Today:

1 Nephi 11:21; “yea, even THE SON OF the Eternal Father!”

1830 Book of Mormon Title Page:

“Joseph Smith, Jr. The author and proprietor of this work”

Today;

“Joseph Smith, Jr. the translator of this work”

You should visit the website of a friend of mine, Jim Spencer from Maze Ministry.  He has a side-by-side machine comparing the 1830 Book of Mormon to a modern version.  It’ll take you page by page, and paragraph by paragraph.  Here’s the link

Anti.  The correct definition for “anti” is:  “a prefix meaning against”.

While there are many websites on the net who promote hate against the Mormon people, the Deckers, Tanners, Spencers and me included are not part of that genre.

We do not approve of, nor do we endorse the dogma of the LDS Church.  With that being said, there is nothing on my website that promotes hatred or animosity towards the Mormon people.  I love them dearly as do the volunteers that work alongside me at LAM.

Now for the 16 Points of the True Church

The “16 Points of the True Church” was originally written as a faith promoting paper by a fellow in the LDS Church.  He and some of his college buddies set out to prove the church was the only true one and fit all Biblical criteria as such.

The card missionaries used to pass out to prospective converts listed 17 points, not 16.  These cards are now sold in a set at Mormon Bookstores for members and/or missionaries to hand out to prospective new converts.

16 Points of the True Church; according to the Bible.

1.  Christ organized the Church (Ephesians 4:11-14).

And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;  For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:  Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:  That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive.

Jesus said in Matthew 16:18 that He was going to build His church upon the Rock, meaning Himself, not someone else.   The body of Christ contains many parts, just like our bodies do.  Some are apostles, prophets, healers, etc.  We have all been given different callings.  Where are the evangelists and pastors in the LDS Church?  Why does the Church only have one prophet at a time?

2. The true church must bear the name of Jesus Christ (Ephesians 5:23).

“For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.”

Nowhere in this scripture does Paul say the church must bear the name of Jesus Christ.  This scripture is pretty simple in showing us the structure of how the church is to be.  The only one at the head of the church is Jesus Christ, not man.

3. The true church must have a foundation of Apostles and Prophets (Ephesians 2:19-20)

“Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone.”

Again, look at this wording and context.  Verse 20 says the foundation is Jesus Christ, not the apostles or prophets.  Jesus Christ is the Chief Cornerstone, not mere men.  The scripture keeps telling us Jesus Christ is the head of the church; Jesus Christ is the cornerstone.  He is the Alpha and Omega.

The apostles were a one-time deal.  They were used at the time of Jesus – they were His apostles, not the church’s.   Mormonism maintains that the Book of Mormon is the keystone and the D&C the capstone of their faith.  Teachings of Ezra Taft Benson, pg. 41;

The Book of Mormon is the “keystone” of our religion, and the Doctrine and Covenants is the capstone, with continuing latter-day revelation. The Lord has placed His stamp of approval on both the keystone and the capstone. (CR April 1987, Ensign 17 [May 1987]: 83.)”

 Question for all of you that participated in this letter; does the truth in the Bible offend you?  Is this why you’ve deserted worshipping Him that has been proclaimed?  1 Peter 2:6-8;

Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.  7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,  8 And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.”

4. The true church must have the same organization as Christ’s Church (Ephesians 4:11-14)

“And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;  For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:  Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:  That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive.”

The verse says that SOME will be given as apostles, etc.  Apostles in the Bible are of the highest calling.  Why does the church have them as the second position after the prophet?

Let’s take a look at the verse again.  It says prophets.  The wording here is plural, not singular.  Why does the church only have one prophet?

And what does the Bible say about false prophets if even ONE of their prophecies doesn’t come to pass?  (Deut. 18:20-22).  Where is polygamy nowadays in mainstream Mormonism?  Why did the Church change its mind about blacks?  Again, there are no pastors in the Mormon Church.  And yet again, there are no evangelists in the Mormon Church.

5.  The true church must claim divine authority.  (Hebrews 5:4-10)

“And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.  So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.  As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.  Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared; Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;  Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec.”

Where in the Bible does it make the claim you have made here?

By the Church’s own admission, the authority wasn’t in place when Smith and Cowdery received the Aaronic Priesthood.   Neither of them had been baptized at that point.  According to the Church’s standards you cannot validly receive the priesthood without being baptized first by a Church authority.  So how did either of them get the priesthood to baptize each other?

Besides all that, let’s take a look at the real meaning of this passage in Hebrews:  Verse six actually says that Jesus’ priesthood is forever, as opposed to Aaron’s, whose is only temporary.  The entire passage is about Jesus’ priesthood and His divine work on the cross.  It says nothing about anyone else after Jesus holding the Melchisedec priesthood.  He is the only one who has this honor.

6. The true church must have no paid ministry (Acts 20:33-34; John 10:11-13)  Acts 20:33-34; “I have coveted no man’s silver, or gold, or apparel.  Yea, ye yourselves know, that these hands have ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me.”

John 10:11-13; “I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.  But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep.  The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep.”

Neither of these verses says there aren’t to be paid ministers!  In John, Jesus told the people that He is the good shepherd and not there to mislead his flock; He is the true shepherd and won’t desert them like some who is only interested in taking their money and leaving the gates wide open.  He assures the people He would never do that.

In Acts, yes, Paul is telling the people that he labored with his own hands to get money for food and necessities.  He was a tent maker in case you’re unaware.  However, this verse isn’t saying the pastor should be unpaid!  There are countless verses throughout the book of Acts that tells of how the newly formed Christian church took care of its people and the disciples.  People sold their properties and all their belongings to give to those who had need.

7. The true church must baptize by immersion (Matthew 3:13-16)

“Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.  But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?  And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.  And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him.”

I agree the Bible does say to be baptized by immersion.  I would also say that no where in the Bible does it say that you’re going to hell if you’re sprinkled.  Faith in Jesus Christ is what saves you, not the works of baptism.  By the way, this passage of scripture also points to the Trinity.

 8. The true church must bestow the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands (Acts 8:14-17)

“Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:  Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)  Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.”

The truth here is that you need to read the entire section of how the church came into existence.  Acts 1:15 is the birth of the Christian Church.  There were 120 members to begin with and later that day it grew by thousands.  We’re not saying it should or shouldn’t be done, the Bible doesn’t say it’s mandatory.  The laying on of hands is a blessing placed upon the recipient, not a means of salvation.

The Holy Spirit came upon all the believers in the upper room that day, (Acts 1:4) as they were sitting there.  They didn’t have hands laid upon them.  What about the thief on the cross?  No works, no laying on of hands for him…Read all of Acts chapter 2!  This is what Holman’s Bible Dictionary has to say about the laying on of hands.  I use this reference for two reasons.  Holman’s is a reliable dictionary.  The Mormon Church uses it, ironically enough.

“Acts introduces the dynamic but fluid practice of the early church. Acts 6 relates the selection of seven men who were put in charge of the daily service to the widows of the Jerusalem congregation. These men were chosen by the congregation, brought before the apostles, and, after prayer, had hands (whether the congregation’s or the apostles’ is unclear) laid on them. Fasting, prayer, and the laying on of hands also accompanied the appointment of Barnabas and Saul to their missionary endeavor (Acts 13:3). Peter and John laid hands on baptized believers in Samaria so they might receive the Holy Spirit (Acts 8:14-19). Paul did the same for some disciples at Ephesus who had been baptized into John the Baptist’s baptism (Acts 19:6). These disciples began speaking in tongues and prophesying as evidence of the Holy Spirit.

In 1 and 2 Timothy Paul wrote of Timothy’s having been given a spiritual gift by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the assembly of elders (1 Tim. 4:14). He also referred to a gift of God that was in Timothy through the laying on of Paul’s hands (2 Tim. 1:6). Paul warned against laying hands on any one hastily (1 Tim. 5:22).  Hebrews classified laying on of hands among the elementary teachings that persons of maturity must leave behind (Heb. 6:2).

 9. The true church must practice divine healing (Mark 3:14-15).

“And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach, And to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils.”

Yes, the church can practice divine healing.  However, truth comes from the Word of God and we must investigate any church that says they speak for the Lord.  The church could heal everyone in sight and still be teaching hellish lies.  Their healing powers just might be coming from Satan and not the Lord.

2 Thessalonians 2:8-11; “And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie.

10. The true church must teach that God and Jesus are separate and distinct individuals (John 17:11; 20:17).  “And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.”

“Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.”

First of all, John 17:11 is Jesus praying to the Father for Him to keep the body of believers as one, just as they are one.  The second scripture is about Jesus not yet ascending to the Father.  It says nothing about the two of them being separate and distinct individuals or that “the true church” must teach these things!   Once again Jesus is our example and yes, He does have the same Father as we do, our Abba.  He was/is “related” to the Heavenly Father through an “eternal generation” as Matthew Henry so eloquently put it.  This in no way implies that God has a body of flesh and bones.  You’ve been lied to and you bought the lie.  This teaching from the LDS Church is a lie from bowels of hell.

11. The true church must teach that God and Jesus have bodies of flesh and bone (Luke 23:36-39; Acts 1:9-11; Hebrews 1:1-3)

And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar, And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself.  And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.  And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.

And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.  And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high.

This belief of the church is actually one of the most heretical teachings of the LDS faith.  All of scripture denounces this theology; in fact the Bible actually tells us just the opposite about God!  Hosea 11:9, Numbers 23:19.

The passages cited in Luke and Acts say absolutely nothing about God having a body of flesh and bones.  The word teaches us (as does historic Christianity) that Jesus has a glorified, resurrected body of flesh and bone.

Mormons cite this because it has Jesus going to the Father, implying they are separate.  But Joseph Smith could never handle that Jesus Christ is God and he himself would never be just like Jesus.  It’s called jealousy, idolatry, blasphemy…

“The most correct book on earth”, the Book of Mormon, even says that God is a spirit.

12. The officers must be called by God (Hebrews 4:4; Exodus 28:1; 40:13-16).

“For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.”

“And take thou unto thee Aaron thy brother, and his sons with him, from among the children of Israel, that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office, even Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron’s sons.”

“And thou shalt put upon Aaron the holy garments, and anoint him, and sanctify him; that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office.

And thou shalt bring his sons, and clothe them with coats:  And thou shalt anoint them, as thou didst anoint their father, that they may minister unto me in the priest’s office: for their anointing shall surely be an everlasting priesthood throughout their generations.  Thus did Moses: according to all that the LORD commanded him, so did he.”

Not sure what the Hebrews 4:4 verse has to do with being called of God to work for Him, but with that being said, let’s look at the other verses from Exodus because there are two issues here that need to be addressed.

1-It is apparent here that God is the one speaking.  But this is not how the LDS officials are called.  It is done by having a priesthood meeting, doing committee work and finding out who was available for the calling and if they measured up.  When it’s your turn to serve, then you’ve been ‘called’ by God.

In addition to this, most Mormons claim they are from the tribe of Ephraim, not Levi.  The Aaronic Priesthood was only given to Aaron and his sons, who were the tribe of Levi.  Even Smith claimed to be of the tribe of Ephraim.

If you read Hosea 7:8-9, it says; “Ephraim, he hath mixed himself among the people; Ephraim is a cake not turned.  Strangers have devoured his strength, and he knoweth it not: yea, gray hairs are here and there upon him, yet he knoweth not.”

Hosea warned the tribe of Ephraim that God had nothing but judgment for them while they were part of the northern kingdom.  Verse 12 says they knew not the precepts of the Lord.  Their god at this point was the golden calf of prosperity.  Once they mixed with Judah, they were swallowed up.

2-Now for the second issue with this!  Why is the church still practicing the rituals from the times of the Old Testament?  Haven’t you heard my friends?

The veil has been rent in two when the ultimate sacrifice was made!

One of my favorite verses is John 19:30.  Jesus said; “It is finished”!

Why do you still put on the perfunctory costumes for something that’s already taken place?

And why are you wearing the same aprons in your temple that Adam and Eve wore in the Garden of Eden to hide their shame while hiding from God?

Are you hiding from God?

13. The true church must claim revelation from God (Amos 3:7)

“Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.”

Dear Mormon friend, this is meant for the Old Testament times.  Everything God wanted to have revealed has been done with and through Jesus’ birth, death and resurrection.  God made His last new revelation with giving His Son as a sacrifice for our sins.  For the first time in history, the sins of the people weren’t just covered through a sacrifice; they were atoned for and washed away through Jesus’ shed blood.

If God is going to reveal every single little thing to us now, then why didn’t God warn them (Joseph Smith and his friends) about polygamy before Joseph Smith began practicing it as a “divine revelation” from God?

By using this as a sign of a “true church”, the church has just proven they are not qualified.  They would have known it wasn’t from the Lord.  The U.S. government completely outlawed polygamy in 1890 through the Edmunds-Tucker Act.  Surely God is bigger than the US government!

14. The true church must be a missionary church (Matthew 28:19-20)  “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:  Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”

Someone once said; “The great omission of the great commission is not obeying”.  The Lord’s direction for us is to “go out and make disciples of men”.  It is essential for us to go out and spread the Word of God, therefore most churches do this.  It doesn’t mean you aren’t a Christian if you don’t.  The work of the Holy Spirit in you will prompt you do to this.

15. The true church must be a restored church (Acts 3:19-20)

Huh?

“Repent ye therefore and be converted…when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; and he shall send Jesus Christ; which before was preached unto you:  Whom the heavens must receive UNTIL the times of RESISTUTION OF ALL THINGS, which God has spoken through the mouth of ALL his holy prophets since the world began”.   You really need to read the ENTIRE context of the passage.      Note that nowhere is a church being restored.  It is quite evident from v. 21 this restitution will not take place UNTIL the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.  Even the LDS agree that Jesus’ return hasn’t occurred yet.

The “restoration” of Joseph Smith, therefore, couldn’t be what is being spoken of.   The word “restitution” or “restoration” is used only ONE time in all of the New Testament and it is in Acts 3:21.  It says;

Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.  This is referring to the time that God will reinstitute all things to their pristine order and purpose the way it was when He put Adam and Eve into the Garden of Eden.

The Greek transliteration for the word restitution is PðïêáôÜóôáóéò – apokatastasis.  It means to reconstitute as in health, home or organization.

16. The true church must practice baptism for the dead (1 Corinthians 15:16&29)

v. 16; “For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised.”

 v. 29; “Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?”

I am begging, and I do mean begging, the Mormon people to read an entire passage of scripture before they build an entire ritual and/or doctrine upon it.  Paul was telling the Corinthians to stop practicing this pagan ritual of baptism for the dead!  The first thirty six verses of this chapter focuses on the resurrection of Jesus Christ.  Paul was asking them why they were practicing baptisms for the dead when they didn’t even believe in the resurrection!

In this particular instance, reading the entire passage in context isn’t even necessary!  Read those two verses.  What are you doing this for when the dead don’t rise from the dead?  That is what Paul was asking the Corinthians.  They did not believe in the resurrection.

Listen, cults will take one verse from the Bible and build an entire theology upon it.  This is always a sign to the people of God there is something wrong!  When there are countless other verses that negate a certain teaching then you need to dig deeper than the surface.

You left out the 17th point.  (Matthew 7:20).

“Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.”

Jesus here is talking about the coming of the false prophets which “come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves”.

If someone is going to try and trick you they aren’t going to be telling you what they’re doing and this is exactly what Jesus was saying to His followers.

Everyone agrees the Mormon people are extremely nice people.  The LDS have a tendency to be well-groomed, well spoken, and they do good deeds for others.  However, doing these things and behaving the way they do isn’t what gets you into heaven!

This is what just breaks my heart for my people.  They’ll go out of their way for anyone, but inside they don’t know the Lord.  The basic tenets of Mormonism teaches they will become gods themselves, that their god is an exalted man who is created and Jesus was conceived through natural means by Elohim and Mary.  Nothing could be further from the truth!

These are the deeds by which we must make our decision.

As you can see from the following, the person who e-mailed us wasn’t done…

Whoever made up the following was wrong:

1. Bible inferior to the Book of Mormon. No, it is not, there is nothing in the doctrine of the LDS religion that says that.

In the 8th Article of Faith it says “We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly”.  It has always been implied and understood in the Church that the Bible is not to be believed entirely because Smith said it wasn’t translated correctly.

Discourses of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pg. 245; “I believe the Bible as it read when it came from the pen of the original writers. Ignorant translators, careless transcribers, or designing and corrupt priests have committed many errors.

 Then Orson Hyde said this in Journal of Discourses 2:75;

The words contained in this Bible are merely a history of what is gone by; it was never given to guide the servant of God in the course he should pursue, any more than the words and commandments of God, given to a generation under one set of circumstances, would serve for another generation under another set of circumstances.” – Salt Lake City on October 6, 1854.

Doctrines of Salvation 3:190; “We are informed in the Book of Mormon that the Hebrew scriptures went “forth from the Jews in purity unto the Gentiles, according to the truth which is in God,” and after they went forth from the Jews many changes were made, and “many parts which are plain and most precious; and also many covenants of the Lord have they taken away.”” – Joseph Fielding Smith

Let’s get down to the basics here though.  Can you personally point out one scripture that has been translated incorrectly?

If Joseph Smith, Joseph Fielding Smith and Orson Hyde are wrong then what?

2. Black people are angels that did not fight valiantly in the war in heaven  No, this is wrong also.

I’m really glad you brought this up because it’s one of the main reasons I left the Church.  You see, while I’m not black, I’m dark.  I have black curly hair, dark eyes and olive skin.  I distinctly remember in 1978 when Kimball had his revelation saying that blacks could now be in the priesthood.   From 1963 (when I was born) until 1978, I had always been taught that I hadn’t been valiant in the pre-existence.  The day the “revelation” came out I remember crying because now I really couldn’t trust God.  Why did He change His mind?  It’s not that I had felt good about myself before, but now I really became skeptical that I could be saved.  How was I ever going to figure out who God was if He kept changing His mind?  (My father’s family is black Welsh)

What had I done to change God’s mind about me?  I had always been raised to believe that I just hadn’t done everything I could have done in the pre-existence.  The shame ran deeper than the Grand Canyon in my soul, thinking I had rejected Jesus in the pre-existence.

Juvenile Instructor, Vol. 3, page 157;We will first inquire into the results of the approbation or displeasure of God upon a people, starting with the belief that a black skin is a mark of the curse of heaven placed upon some portions of mankind. Some, however, will argue that a black skin is not a curse, nor a white skin a blessing.

In fact, some have been so foolish as to believe and say that a black skin is a blessing, and that the negro is the finest type of a perfect man that exists on the earth; but to us such teachings are foolishness. We understand that when God made man in his own image and pronounced him very good, that he made him white. We have no record of any of God’s favored servants being of a black race….every angel who ever brought a message of God’s mercy to man was beautiful to look upon, clad in the purest white and with a countenance bright as the noonday sun… Their skin is quite black, their hair woolly and black, their intelligence stunted, and they appear never to have arisen from the most savage state of barbarism.”

At the same time I was still living with the effects of God changing His mind before that.  My great-grandfather grew up in a polygamous home.  He had several sister “mothers” before the prophet had a revelation saying that God changed His mind about that.  When I’d attend family reunions there were literally hundreds of us there each summer.

So by the time I was 15, I was living with two monumental doctrinal changes.  You can see where I began questioning I’m sure…Deut. 18:20-22 again says that if even one prophecy proves untrue then the prophet is not from God, we are to dismiss him immediately.

3. Blood atonement (murder of members) for certain sins – This is a false doctrine that has been spread by anti-Mormons tryi8ng to bring the LDS Church down.

You’re right.  It is certainly a false doctrine, but it is also a doctrine the LDS church teaches.  You should read D&C 132:19-27.  The Doctrines of Salvation, vol. 1, pp. 133-8 also says;

“Man may commit certain grievous sins—according to his light and knowledge—that will place him beyond the reach of the atoning blood of Christ.  If then he would be saved, he must make sacrifice of his own life to atone…”  “Therefore their only hope is to have their own blood shed to atone, as far as possible, in their behalf”.

Haven’t you ever wondered why it that Utah still has the firing squad available for the death penalty?

This is for you about how we feel:

1. We DO place our eternal life in the hands of Jesus Christ our Lord, Saviour and King. We have never thought it is in the hands of any latter-day prophet, although we do believe in the prophet.

You may not place your salvation in the hands of Joseph Smith or any other prophet, but that it against the church’s teachings and your statement is disingenuous at best.  D&C, Doctrines of Salvation and Pearl of Great Price explicitly says the prophet holds the keys to the kingdom of heaven.

By taking the Mormon sacrament, going to temple and participating in ordinances for the dead, you are subscribing to the “philosophy of Mormonism” and have not committed your lives to the God and King, Christ Jesus.

Living the Gospel, pg. 18; “…the teachings of the leaders of modern Israel are based upon the same religious philosophy, of which striking example was given when President Heber J. Grant said: “There is but one path of safety to the Latter-day Saints, and that is the path of duty.  It is not a testimony, it is not a marvelous manifestation, it is not knowing that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is true, that it is a plan of salvation – it is not actually knowing that the Savior is the Redeemer, and that Joseph Smith was His prophet that will save you and me; but it is the keeping of the commandments of God, living the life of a Latter-day Saint.”  (April General Conference, 1915.)…Living the Gospel day by day, not merely understanding or believing it, is what counts ultimately.” – Gerrit DeJong, Jr. – BYU Professor

We DO believe that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God. He never failed at any test. He DID NOT try to lead people to another god as many claim. Yes, he was a man, so he was not perfect.

I’ve already listed at least two prophecies that didn’t come to pass.  God never expected any of His prophets to be perfect, He already knew it was impossible.  There is however a HUGE difference between being perfect and being correct.

Here’s a link for our site listing just a handful of the false prophecies made by the LDS Church http://www.lifeafter.org/falseprophecies.asp

 3. We are convinced the LDS church IS the Restored Gospel. We DO believe that the real Gospel was taken from the earth for a time.

If you really believe that how is it you can believe a word of what Jesus says in the Bible?  He PROMISED us that His church would never perish!  Matthew 16:18.

 4. We are convinced that the Book of Mormon is a truly divine document.

I pray you would look at our evidence to rethink your statement.  The teachings of the Church are full of inaccuracies and false prophecies.  Here’s just one example:

1 Nephi 2:8; “And it came to pass that he called the name of the river, Laman, and it emptied into the Red Sea; and the valley was in the borders near the mouth thereof”.

No river has ever emptied into the Red Sea.

 5. We are convinced that the Pearl of Great Price (particularly the Book of Abraham) is truly divine and from God.

Again, I am praying that you would compare those documents with what the Bible says.   You could even compare it with the book of Moses.  How come they contradict each other?

The papyri Joseph used to write the book of Abraham are actually Egyptian funerary texts similar to what is known as the pagan Book of Breathings.

Do you honestly believe there are other gods in existence?  That is what the Book of Abraham claims.

Have you ever compared the writings in the sacred works Joseph Smith presented to the people in the Church?  For instance you could begin with reading the verse in 2 Nephi 9:9;

“…to that being who beguiled our first parents, who transformeth himself nigh unto an angel of light…”

Now go to the introductory page of D&C.  In the 3rd paragraph it says;

“Joseph Smith received visitations from Moroni, an angel of light…”

Next look at the Testimony of Joseph Smith 2:47;

“After this third visit, he (Moroni) again ascended into heaven as before, and I was again left to ponder on the strangeness of what I had just experienced; when almost immediately after the heavenly messenger had ascended from me for the third time, the cock crowed…

Please, compare this to the story in Matthew 26:33-34;

Peter answered and said unto him, Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended.  Jesus said unto him, verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.

This should be of great concern to anyone in the LDS church.  Just this part of Mormonism alone absolutely breaks my heart for the millions of people who are in this church and confess, as you do, that you love the Lord Jesus.

You see, I don’t doubt for a second that you love Jesus.  That’s not what is in question here.  What is in question are the teachings you’ve been taught over the years.

 6. We are convinced that the priesthood of the LDS church holds authority to act in the name of God.

I’ve already pointed out the errors of the priesthood to you.

Dear whom it may concern:

This is to inform you that I hereby am dedicated my life to my Saviour and King Jesus Christ. I wish to stay in his true gospel, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I wish to be made known that my name is to stay on the records of his Gospel. I make this statement, and not demand because I know I love my Saviour.

Be advised that this action has been taken because it has been demonstrated to our full satisfaction that the Saviour’s true church is NOT in great error, and teaches NO false doctrines.

Sincerely,

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

We wish you all to know that we love our Savior and King Jesus Christ and we have devoted our lives to Him. Not the Church. That is not what the LDS Church doctrine says at all. It is to dedicate you life to your Saviour. We hope you will realize the error of what you have done. In Christ’s Love. Us.

Actually, if I had the chance to do it all over again I would’ve left sooner.  I’d do it again today, tomorrow, next week, next month, next year….all so He could call me “friend”.  The best gift I’ve ever received in my entire life is the salvation God gave to me and the companionship I now have with His Holy Spirit residing inside of me.

P.S. This letter and document were written at different times and by us all at different times, so it may be confusing, please understand. Thank you.

I want to tell you all again that I know with my heart you love Jesus.  I truly understand the love for Him and being in the church at the same time.

Remember, I was born a sixth generation Mormon on my mother’s side and fourth generation on my father’s side.  I’m originally from Ogden, Utah.  The hardest thing in the world for me was when I had to leave the church.  I never thought I would have done such a thing.

However, I couldn’t reconcile the Jesus of the Bible and the Jesus of Mormonism any longer.  I finally took the steps to be free of the Law to join Him in His grace and love He has for me and all of His children.

I pray that you truly look over everything I’ve written in response to your note and study them.  Don’t trust your own ‘instincts’ because the Bible says the heart of man cannot be trusted.  (Jer. 17:9)  Study the word; do word studies with dictionaries as well.  Then make the decision.

I hope to hear back from you all and know that I’m praying for you.

 With Love in Christ;

Michelle Grim  …

Joseph Smith and Polygamy

In the 13 years I was a Mormon there was little talk about Joseph Smith and polygamy. Whenever polygamy was brought up the discussion was usually centered on Brigham Young as the one who set the example and paved the way for polygamy in the early Mormon Church.

14 Fundamentals in Following the Prophet

One of the many lists to observe and obey in the Mormon Church is the topic of this article.  I’m convinced these lists are what help to keep the people of Mormonism from having any independent thoughts or the opportunity to find truth.  If you’re so busy trying to fulfill everything they’d have you do then how would you ever find time to actually hear what God has to say in His word?

We’ll be taking a look at the Fourteen Fundamentals in Following the Prophet and compare each to the biblical standard of Christianity.

1.    The prophet is the only man who speaks for the Lord in everything.

There are many scriptures that refute the above statement, but 1 Cor. 2:9-10 is a good place to begin.  This scripture tells us God gave the Holy Spirit to believers in order to help them understand who He is.  Furthermore, the Holy Spirit helps us to distinguish truth from error.

In the Christian church everyone can and does speak for God.  If the pastor told his congregation he was the only one who could speak for God he’d be preaching to an empty sanctuary.

1 Cor. 2:9-10;But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.  10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

1 John 2:27;But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

Job 32:8;But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.”

 2.    The living prophet is more vital to us than the standard works.

Three passages of scripture come to mind quickly when I see the above statement.  They are:

Isaiah 40:7-8;The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the LORD bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass. 8 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.

Matthew 24:35;Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

Hebrews 2:1-3;Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.  2 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward; 3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him.

How could anyone ever be more important than God’s written word?  I love my husband and children beyond what words can describe, but God – well God takes precedence in everything in my life.  I don’t worship the Bible, but surely His words are what I seek each day and want to know more than all else.

 3.    The living prophet is more important to us than a dead prophet.

With this kind of reasoning wouldn’t that mean Isaiah or Moses has little to nothing of import to give the people?  The only plausible reason this would be is if the prophets were known to testify of a false gospel.  And as we know Isaiah, Moses, Jeremiah, Daniel, et al, weren’t known for spreading false gospels.

God will never leave nor forsake us and gives us many ways to hear Him and follow.  If Matthew 4:4 is correct then it wouldn’t matter if the prophet had passed away or not.  The words of God are what we must have to nourish our souls, even today.

Matthew 4:4;But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

 4.    The prophet will never lead the church astray.

Number four in this little diatribe is the Church’s way of trying to make up for the previous fundamental.  It’s their way of reassuring the masses there might be something the new prophet has to clear up from the previous guy to try and destroy any speculations that someone may have made a “mistake”.

Oh, what a tangled web we weave when we practice to deceive…

Deut. 18:20-22;But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.21 And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken?22 When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.

2 Peter 1:20-21;Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.  21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

 5.    The prophet is not required to have any particular earthly training or credentials to speak on any subject or act on any matter at any time.

Okay.  So, what if the prophet of the Church told all the members to cash in all their 401K’s and bank accounts and give everything to the Church?  Then what?  What if he told them God had appeared to him and said it was time to start practicing polygamy again?  I just can’t see my grandma accepting another woman into her home!

According to the first fundamental the prophet speaks for God on everything so whom would you believe, the prophet or…what would you do…?

2 Thess. 2:3-4;Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; 4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

 6.    The prophet does not have to say “Thus Saith the Lord,” to give us scripture.

What if the current prophet said “Thus saith Prophet Monson; everyone must bow their knee when I walk into the room” and then next week he’s changed his mind?  Does that mean it’s scripture?  I mean up until a year or so ago I didn’t like trail mix, but now I do…that’s how preposterous this “fundamental” is!

Ps. 12:1-8;Help, LORD; for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the children of men.  2 They speak vanity every one with his neighbour: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak. 3 The LORD shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud things: 4 Who have said, With our tongue will we prevail; our lips are our own: who is lord over us?  5 For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise, saith the LORD; I will set him in safety from him that puffeth at him. 6 The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.  7 Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.  8 The wicked walk on every side, when the vilest men are exalted.

Jeremiah 26:2;Thus saith the LORD; Stand in the court of the LORD’s house, and speak unto all the cities of Judah, which come to worship in the LORD’s house, all the words that I command thee to speak unto them; diminish not a word.

 7.    The prophet tells us what we need to know, not always what we want to know.

The following verses could also apply to the previous fundamental, but it occurred to me that because the Mormon Church’s tenets change with the wind, it seems they’re the ones deciding what is important, not God.  If the changed “prophecies” were really from God to begin with wouldn’t God have made it possible for these things to be lawful?

Ezekiel 13:2-3;Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel that prophesy, and say thou unto them that prophesy out of their own hearts, Hear ye the word of the LORD; 3 Thus saith the Lord GOD; Woe unto the foolish prophets, that follow their own spirit, and have seen nothing!

Jeremiah 23:32-40;Behold, I am against them that prophesy false dreams, saith the LORD, and do tell them, and cause my people to err by their lies, and by their lightness; yet I sent them not, nor commanded them: therefore they shall not profit this people at all, saith the LORD.”  (Also see vs. 33-40.)

 8.    The prophet is not limited by men’s reasoning.

It might be those who speak for God aren’t confined by men’s reasoning, but the Church has historically changed their doctrine based upon the reasoning and laws of man in America; polygamy and the race issue are just two examples.

Additionally, what about Joseph Smith’s reasoning of burning down a newspaper press, declaring martial law, making his own monetary system, glass looking, polygamy, and on it goes.  Is that God’s reasoning or man’s?

This fundamental completely flies in the face of common sense.  If future behavior is any indicator of past behavior, the people of the Mormon Church are in for a world of surprises.

1 John 4:1;Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.”

1Thess. 5:21;Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.

 9.    The prophet can receive revelation on any matter, temporal or spiritual.

Again, what if the prophet said to pack your bags, you’re hoofin’ it to Missouri?  When I grew up in the Church this was actually taught about and planned for.  We all knew that someday we’d be walking back to the “Promised Land” our pioneer ancestors had once left behind.

Looking back on it now I just cannot imagine believing such a thing!  In the Old Testament Era, God spoke to us through His prophets.  In the New Testament era, God has spoken to us through His Son.

Deut. 12:29-32;When the LORD thy God shall cut off the nations from before thee, whither thou goest to possess them, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their land; 30 Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou inquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise.  31 Thou shalt not do so unto the LORD thy God: for every abomination to the LORD, which he hateth, have they done unto their gods; for even their sons and their daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods.  32 What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.”

Hebrews 1:1-2;God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds.

 10. The prophet may advise on civic matters.

Didn’t all the prophets advise on civic matters?  Imagine if Jeremiah hadn’t warned the Israelites about what was going to take place with Babylon.  The only purpose this fundamental serves is to remind the people the prophet controls their lives.

2 Peter 2:1, 19-20;But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.  19 While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.  20 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.

 11. The two groups who have the greatest difficulty in following the prophet are the proud who are learned and the proud who are rich.

Well, I try not to be proud and I’m definitely not rich, however I do try to be learned.  The Church has adopted a very bad habit of writing down and preserving every single thing that’s escaped from their lips.

On one hand they encourage their followers to study Mormon theology, yet on the other they don’t want you to have “gospel hobbies” (MD, pg. 334) and study too much, lest ye become learned.  Sigh.

God has never forbidden anyone to study and learn.  He’s given man a brain for a reason and I just can’t for the life of me believe He wouldn’t want you to use it!

2 Tim. 3:14-16;But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;  15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.  16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.

Acts 17:2; And according to Paul’s custom, he went to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures.

 12. The prophet will not necessarily be popular with the world or the worldly.

They don’t have to be popular with the world, but hating other Christians is exactly what the Apostle John warned us about and commanded us not to do.  Christians are supposed to love other Christians, not regard them as the “whores of Babylon” (1 Nephi 14:10).

Jude 1:4;For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 John 2:9, 3:14-15;He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.  14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.  15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.

 13. The prophet and his counselors make up the First Presidency—the highest quorum in the Church.

When we place mankind so high, up making it impossible for anyone to come into contact with the “rulers”, we need to question what is going on.  They’ve placed themselves into the exalted position of God.

Even in big churches there are elder and deacon boards, however I’ve never heard any of the larger churches claim that one of these groups is “higher” than the other.  Additionally I’ve never attended, nor spoken at a church where I couldn’t make an appointment with either the senior or an associate pastor when needed.  In the LDS Church there is no way the average person could ever have a face to face meeting with someone in the “highest quorum”.

Luke 14:11;For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Matthew 24:23-24;Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not.  24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.

 14. The prophet and the presidency—the living prophet and the First Presidency—follow them and be blessed—reject them and suffer.

John 14:6 says; “I am the way the truth and the light, no one comes to the Father, except by me”.  Where in that verse does it say we are damned or should suffer if we reject the leaders of the Mormon Church?  Paul states in four short verses to remember the gospel which was delivered by him and nowhere in those four verses does it talk about the Mormon leaders…

1 Cor. 15:1-4;Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.

Gal. 1:6-8; “I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed.

The preceding list of the Fourteen Fundamentals and the quotes at the end were taken from the Liahona, 1981.  My mind just can’t wrap itself around the acceptance of any of the items listed, let alone all of them.

Why would anyone ever “suffer” or lose salvation by heeding God’s word?

“Liahona June 1981, pg. 1, Ezra Taft Benson, “Fourteen Fundamentals in Following the Prophet

(Address given Tuesday, February 26, 1980 at Brigham Young University); “In conclusion let us summarize this grand key, these “Fourteen Fundamentals in Following the Prophet”, for our salvation depends on them.”

“I testify that these fourteen fundamentals in following the living prophet are true. If we want to know how well we stand with the Lord then let us ask ourselves how well we stand with His mortal captain—how close do our lives harmonize with the Lord’s anointed—the living Prophet—President of the Church, and with the Quorum of the First Presidency.

May God bless us all to look to the Prophet and the Presidency in the critical and crucial days ahead is my prayer.” – Ezra Taft Benson

We’re praying the Mormon people will open their eyes and for a moment just think of the ramifications if the prophets are wrong about this.  Not one of the fourteen items told the members to look to Jesus!  Each of them demanded complete obedience to mankind, never God.

 With Love in Christ;

Michelle

The Greek word for grace is charis.  (Strong’s #5485)  The transliteration means favor or gift.  Think today about what God has graced you with.  Is it your very life, your spouse, children, or home?  Has He healed you from a disease? How has He personally blessed you?  Share with a Mormon how He has done this.

Studying the Book of Mormon 9

Fourth Nephi

Highlighting the Writings of Nephi, Amos, Amos, Jr., Ammaron, and Mormon

My purpose this week is to show the basic facts of this book in addition to asking the Mormon people a few questions to mull over in their own private times.  Most of the verses in this book are so ridiculous that it’s hard to believe people are actually comforted or encouraged by God when they read through it.

 4th Nephi has 49 verses

Verses with the phrase “And it Came to Pass”: 20

4 Nephi 1:1; “And it came to pass that the thirty and fourth year passed away, and also the thirty and fifth, and behold the disciples of Jesus had formed a church of Christ in all the lands round about…

Verses describing years that have passed: 19

4 Nephi 1:6; “And thus did the thirty and eighth year pass away, and also the thirty and ninth, and forty and first, and the forty and second, yea, even until forty and nine years had passed away, and also the fifty and first, and the fifty and second; yea, and even until fifty and nine years had passed away.

 1:1, 2, 4, 6, 14, 20, 21, 22, 24, 27, 34, 35, 36, 40, 41, 44, 45, 47, 48

Questions for 4th Nephi

If there were multiple authors of this book, why is the writing style of each so much alike?

Why do they make the same grammatical errors?

Why is the phrase “and it came to pass” used so much?  What purpose does it serve in “scripture”?

If these folks are engraving their message upon plates of brass, why do they have so much time on their hands and materials to write long drawn out verses of how much time had passed?  Is it because there’s nothing else to write about?

Is it possible for God to make grammatical errors?

Fourth Nephi is a short little book emphasizing the lives of the Nephites and Lamanites living in peaceful times and then walking away from their god.

This is exactly the opposite of what Jesus tells us in the Bible.  John 14:23 says He will come to tarry with us and make His abode with us.

The most remarkable items of interest are:

Every single person became a believer (vs. 2).  Really?  Again, the stories in the Book of Mormon are bigger and better than the Bible.

In verse ten, Nephi tells us the Nephites did “wax strong and did multiply exceedingly fast and became an exceedingly fair and delightsome people”.

Exceedingly is used exceedingly too much, don’t you think?

Why did they become white when they believed God?

If you’re a person of color and a member of the LDS Church, how do these types of verses make you feel about God?

I have to tell you, when I was Mormon and read this stuff it made me feel less than a dog.  I was convinced God was less than pleased with me and my coloring was proof of his disdain.

Ten verses later some of the people would revolt, and decide to become Lamanites (up to this time it was peaceful living and there were no more “ites” – vs. 17).

Truth: real believers don’t revolt against God.

Mormon also reports that people had multiplied exceedingly and became “rich because of their prosperity in Christ” (vs. 23).

Moral to this story?  It seems that God only likes rich white people who have lots and lots of kids.  For the life of me, I saw absolutely nothing in this “work” that would provide hope for a Mormon or give a continued reason for faith in God.

I can’t figure out what this story has to do with God.  If you do, let me know!

A little over the halfway point in this story the Lamanites threw the Nephites into prisons which were “rent in twain”; Nephites were also thrown into furnaces of fire where they didn’t get burned and dens with wild beasts where the disciples of Jesus played with them “as a child with a lamb” (vs. 32-33).

By the time this book ends, Amos had died and his brother Ammaron was keeping the records of Nephi.  People everywhere were living in sin, except of course, a few righteous Nephites.

 It’s 321 AD.

And finally, why were these people using Greek and Latin words in addition to lifting phrases from the KJV while living in Mesoamerica speaking “Reformed Egyptian”?

Why did the translation come out in Jacobean English which wasn’t part of the American English language used during the early nineteenth century?

Confused yet?  That’s exactly where the LDS Church wants for their followers to be.

I just returned from my niece Felicia’s funeral in Utah this week.  At that funeral the bishop quoted from the Book of Mormon, telling those of us in the audience that someday we’d all “return to our Heavenly Father” to become like him.  No one in the audience was placated, in fact my other niece Angie (Felicia’s sister), sobbed aloud at the end of his short talk.

That scenario is what I think of when reading through these empty passages in Joseph Smith’s literary endeavors.  There is nothing of substance to any of this.

Pray with us won’t you?  These dear people need our compassion and our ongoing desire to see them come to the real Jesus.

With Love in Christ; Michelle Grim

Studying the Book of Mormon 8

My Endless List of Questions in the Ongoing Saga of Nephi

Plagiarism:  the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one’s own original work.

www.dictionary.com

3 Nephi 1:14; “Behold, I come unto my own, to fulfil all things which I have made known unto the children of men from the foundation of the world, and to do the will, both of the Father and of the Son—of the Father because of me, and of the Son because of my flesh. And behold, the time is at hand, and this night shall the sign be given.”

If anyone knows what the verse above actually means and can explain it to me, I’d love to hear from you!  The quote comes from “the voice of the Lord”.

The story of third Nephi opens up repeating some of the things Helaman told us about at the end of his book.  This particular book has been called “the holies of the holies of the Book of Mormon” (John Welch, Maxwell Institute) and looked upon as the best literary work of the Church, rivaling the writings of Isaiah.

This time around we’re going to be listing the main events with a list of question at the end of each chapter for the Mormon to ask themselves in their private time.  I’m praying the questions will spark further investigation of what their god is all about and whether or not he’s worthy of their adoration.

Chapter One Theme

The main theme in the first chapter is undoubtedly the birth of Jesus Christ.  But there are glaring questions that need to be asked.

Where did the father of Nephi go and why did he leave his family?  What purpose does this serve in glorifying God or learning more about Him (1:3)?  Did his family go out looking for him?  If he was a man of God why would he do this?  The man is the only source of money to the family in ancient societies so why would he just up and leave his wife like this?

Why Smith felt it necessary to tell his readers the dark people had to set aside a day to kill the white and delightsome people is very telling.  There’s really no reason for that verse as it doesn’t glorify God or promote a holy atmosphere.  (1:9)

What it does promote is further mistrust and hatred for those who don’t think like you do.

Why isn’t the focus of their scripture about the miracle of Jesus’ birth and how awesome it is their Redeemer has come to rescue them?  What about all the specific prophecies His birth fulfilled?  Since those Nephites supposedly had all the writings of their fathers, it shouldn’t be too difficult to drag them out and look, right?

Who is the guy talking from the clouds in v. 14?  The Mormons don’t believe in the Trinity.  This verse has to be at the top of the list for the absurd.  Honestly people…

Why are they baptizing people in 3 AD?  Jesus would’ve been about 7 yrs old around that time…  (1:25)

 Chapter Two Theme

“And this ended the _____ year”…

Most of the nineteen verses in this chapter are riddled with the repeated phrase of how many years had passed away.  How does this point to God and what does he want for you to learn from it?

What is the doctrine of Christ spoken of in 2:2?  More contentions arose from the bad guys leading people away from the Lord.

Is it reasonable that people living in Mesoamerica would be worried about their “liberties of their church and worship and their freedoms”?  (2:12)

Do you honestly believe God would change the color of someone’s skin because they became righteous?  (2:15)

If you’re African American, Mexican, Peruvian or Asian are you still dark now that you’re considered righteous?

 Chapter Three Theme

Epistles of Governor Lachoneus’ and Giddianhi the Chieftain Robber

How did the governor end up with a Greek sounding name in Mesoamerica in 15 AD?

Do you really believe that a band of thugs are going to be sending the governor an detailed “epistle” and use vocabulary in this manner?

“And behold, I am Giddianhi; and I am the governor of this the secret society of Gadianton; which society and the works thereof I know to be good…And I write this epistle unto you, Lachoneus, and I hope that ye will deliver up your lands and your possessions, without the shedding of blood, that this my people may recover their rights and government, who have dissented away from you because of your wickedness in retaining from them their rights of government, and except ye do this, I will avenge their wrongs. I am Giddianhi.”  (vs. 9-10)

Lachoneus delivers marvelous prophecies to the Gadianton robbers to surrender and “so great” were his words that it caused fear to come upon the Gadiantons.  Really?  What all did he say that it caused so much fear and is this really believable?

3 Nephi 3:22 lists most all of the things that didn’t exist in Mesoamerica at that time and claims they marched to the appointed place to wait for a battle with the robbers.  Chariots, grain, cattle, herds and horses were only existent in the mind of Joseph Smith.

The other problem with this claim is how many people Smith claims was there.  Tens of thousands…yet not one single shred of any archaeological evidence has been found.

 Chapter Four Theme

The Greatest Slaughter and Giddianhi’s Death

Other than the slaughters being so great and the horrible grammar used in this chapter, the most remarkable event we learned of was the use of the word “scantiness”.  True story.  The etymology of this word only goes back to the early 17th Century.  Why is it in the Book of Mormon in 21 AD?  (4:19)

The only other thing worthy of mention was the last two verses when the Nephites were victorious over the robbers.  The way this event is phrased makes it laughable if it wasn’t so sad.  Why do the Mormon people believe this?

3 Nephi 4:32-33; “Yea, they did cry: Hosanna to the Most High God. And they did cry: Blessed be the name of the Lord God Almighty, the Most High God.  33 And their hearts were swollen with joy, unto the gushing out of many tears, because of the great goodness of God in delivering them out of the hands of their enemies; and they knew it was because of their repentance and their humility that they had been delivered from an everlasting destruction.

 Chapter Five Theme

Supposed Allusion to the Gathering of Israel

Is it reasonable to believe that not one single Nephite doubted the prophets?  Not one.  (5:1)

Did every single Nephite really forsake all their sins (5:3)?  This claim would mean tens of thousands of people were perfect.

 If the Book of Mormon was really written on brass plates, how did Nephi have the room to write this in verse seven;

“And thus had the twenty and second year passed away, and the twenty and third year also, and the twenty and fourth, and the twenty and fifth; and thus had twenty and five years passed away.

The very next verse we’re told that so many things happened they couldn’t all be written.  Okay, so you have the time, space and energy to write the verse above, but you can’t tell us about the miracles?  It also used the phrase from the Apostle John again… “…this book cannot contain even a hundredth part of what was done among so many people in the space of twenty and five years.”  John wrote that circa 90 AD.

In 5:13 Mormon tells us he’s a disciple of Jesus Christ but that’d be kind of hard to do since Jesus wasn’t out on the mission field yet.  It’s 21 AD.

We find in 3 Nephi 5:18-19 how Mormon tells us that his work isn’t from God, but himself.

“And I know the record which I make to be a just and a true record; nevertheless there are many things which, according to our language, we are not able to write.  19 And now I make an end of my saying, which is of myself, and proceed to give my account of the things which have been before me.

The next verse makes it sound like he’s a breed of an animal or something.  What in the world is a “pure descendant”?

“I am Mormon, and a pure descendant of Lehi…

Is that opposed to a fake descendant?

 Chapter Six Theme

The Pretended Appearance of God’s Presence

 If these prophets don’t have the time, space or materials to write everything down, why do they continually have to repeat themselves in their writings?  3 Nephi 6:2;

“…and they did return to their own lands and their possessions, both on the north and on the south, both on the land northward and on the land southward.

To back track one verse, you’ll see that they also have a problem remembering that cattle and horses still weren’t available to the Americas in 30 AD.

1 John 4:4 says; “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

I’m convinced Joseph didn’t understand how the Holy Spirit works in the hearts of true believers.  Smith’s obvious hatred for God shows up in the repetitive stories of how God failed the people time and again.  God doesn’t fail, people do.

John 14:16-18; “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. 18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

The building up of the church, the contentions and then continual peace times back and forth are proof that God did not exist with these people.  They only lived in the imagination of Joseph Smith’s mind.

From verses 10 – 30 is one of many examples that Smith made this whole thing up.  The church broke up then got back together…

 Chapter Seven Theme

 Pathetically Uninspired

My Book of Mormon chapter headings says this chapter contains Nephi’s powerful ministry.  I would find it difficult at best that Nephi could do anything if their god can’t deliver on his promises.  Be that as it may, there are also other uninspiring events to take a look at in this chapter.  3 Nephi 7:8 is plagiarized from 2 Peter 2:22, but with a twist of Smith’s grammar problem thrown into the mix.

“And thus six years had not passed away since the more part of the people had turned from their righteousness, like the dog to his vomit, or like the sow to her wallowing in the mire.

 In 7:17-19 it tells us again too many things happened to write them in their books.  It also tells us of Joseph’s obsession with angels because angels administered to Nephi on a daily basis and then we’re told of Nephi’s power to raise someone from the dead.  Just out of the blue, no background, no recorded witnesses, no proof, no reason why the person died, nothing.  And then just as a reminder this is not an inspired work of God, the chapter ends with this;

“And there were many in the commencement of this year that were baptized unto repentance; and thus the more part of the year did pass away.

Chapter Eight Theme

Nephi’s Perfection and Three Days of Darkness with the Crucifixion

3 Nephi 8:1; “And now it came to pass that according to our record, and we know our record to be true, for behold, it was a just man who did keep the record—for he truly did many miracles in the name of Jesus; and there was not any man who could do a miracle in the name of Jesus save he were cleansed every whit from his iniquity—

Somehow the Mormon god just can’t seem to get any good men but Nephi to serve in his army.  Additionally, notice how the prophet Mormon has to remind people that their writings are true.  Who was this meant for?

3 Nephi 8:3; And the people began to look with great earnestness for the sign which had been given by the prophet Samuel, the Lamanite, yea, for the time that there should be darkness for the space of three days over the face of the land.

Mark 15:33; And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.

This is a classic example of how the Book of Mormon is not inspired of God.

See our article on Life After Ministry blog for 1,000 Reasons to Leave the Mormon Church.  Look under the topic of crucifixion for our insight above.

http://lifeafterministry.com/2010/10/01/reasons-starting-with-c

In 8:18 they use the term “rent in twain” again.  This time they were talking about their rocks.

In 8:21-22 it says the darkness over the earth was so great they couldn’t even light campfires.  Nothing but continual weeping and how they could “feel the vapor of darkness (vs. 20).

The majority of this chapter is filled with horrific events of God destroying the earth in cataclysmic earthquakes at the time of Jesus’ death some 5,600+ miles away.  Again they mention the earth was darkened for three days (8:23), people were killed and there were “thunderings and lightening”.

Some Book of Mormon apologists have claimed that as many as 70,000 to 90,000 people died during the three days of darkness and earthquakes that took place when Jesus was crucified.

How do you explain John 10:10?

“The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

 Chapter Nine Theme

Plagiarisms Abound in Jesus’ Travels to the Americas

Just one question about 9:13.  If the survivors Jesus is talking to are more righteous than those who died why are they told to repent?  Wouldn’t they have already done that?

Here’s a list of the bible verses they plagiarized and the verses from the Book of Mormon they used them in.

3 Nephi 9:13 and John 12:40; “…and be converted, that I may heal you.”

3 Nephi 9:15:Behold, I am Jesus Christ the Son of God. I created the heavens and the earth, and all things that in them are. I was with the Father from the beginning. I am in the Father, and the Father in me; and in me hath the Father glorified his name.

John 1:2-3; “The same was in the beginning with God.  All things were made by him…

John 14:11, 13; “Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me… that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

3 Nephi 9:16; I came unto my own, and my own received me not. And the scriptures concerning my coming are fulfilled.

John 1:11; “He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

3 Nephi 9:17; And as many as have received me, to them have I given to become the sons of God; and even so will I to as many as shall believe on my name, for behold, by me redemption cometh, and in me is the law of Moses fulfilled.

John 1:12, 17; “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name…For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

Also see Luke 24:44; John 15:25; Matthew 5:17…

3 Nephi 9:18; I am the light and the life of the world. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.

John 1:4, 8:12; “In him was life; and the life was the light of men… Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

Revelation 22:13; “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end…

Why were the Nephites speaking Greek?  Apha and Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet.  Joseph Smith said the Book of Mormon contained no Greek or Latin.  See our article about the Greek and Latin words in the Book of Mormon here:

http://www.lifeafter.org/greek.asp

3 Nephi 9:19-20; And ye shall offer up unto me no more the shedding of blood; yea, your sacrifices and your burnt offerings shall be done away, for I will accept none of your sacrifices and your burnt offerings. And ye shall offer for a sacrifice unto me a broken heart and a contrite spirit. And whoso cometh unto me with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, him will I baptize with fire and with the Holy Ghost…

Psalm 51:16-17; “For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.  The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

 And finally –

3 Nephi 9:22; Therefore, whoso repenteth and cometh unto me as a little child, him will I receive, for of such is the kingdom of God. Behold, for such I have laid down my life, and have taken it up again; therefore repent, and come unto me ye ends of the earth, and be saved.

Luke 18:16; “But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.

John 10:18; “No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself…

Isaiah 45:22; Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.

Isn’t it ironic they’d quote this verse and not believe it?  How sad for those who trust in Joseph Smith.

They plagiarized the bible 17 times in 8 verses.

 Chapter Ten Theme

Jesus’ Repeated Saying of a Hen and Her Chickens

Everybody hears a voice from the sky.  Really?

3 Nephi 10:12 gives an outrageous story of how the earth and its inhabitants behave.  Check this out.

“And the earth did cleave together again, that it stood; and the mourning, and the weeping, and the wailing of the people who were spared alive did cease; and their mourning was turned into joy, and their lamentations into the praise and thanksgiving unto the Lord Jesus Christ, their Redeemer.

The above verse and the last verse of this chapter is the only thing worthy of mention.  In the last verse Jesus shows his resurrected body to the believers.

 Chapter Eleven Theme

The Sky Voice Comes Again and a Multitude of People Thrust Hands into Jesus

In 11:1 the voice from the sky makes another appearance but no one understands it this time around.  Just two verses later they still don’t understand the “small voice”.

In verse four they heard the voice again and in verse five they heard it a third time.  I guess the third time’s a charm because they finally caught on in verse six and it just so happens that God is paraphrasing Matthew 17:5.

3 Nephi 11:7; “Behold my Beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased, in whom I have glorified my name—hear ye him.

Hey, wait a minute…isn’t that what the exalted god told Smith in the grove of trees?

Joseph Smith Testimony 1:17; “It no sooner appeared than I found myself delivered from the enemy which held me bound. When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other—This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!

 Hmmm…

In verses 9-11 Jesus makes his curtain call and reveals to the people that he’s all that and more while paraphrasing John 1:4, 8:12 and 17:4.  Immediately afterwards the entire crowd falls to the earth from shock.

For the second time we see another verse that would be hilarious if not for the fact that people like my own mother actually believes this stuff.

3 Nephi 11:15; “And it came to pass that the multitude went forth, and thrust their hands into his side, and did feel the prints of the nails in his hands and in his feet; and this they did do, going forth one by one until they had all gone forth, and did see with their eyes and did feel with their hands, and did know of a surety and did bear record, that it was he, of whom it was written by the prophets, that should come.

3 Nephi 11:25 “borrows” from Matthew 28:19 which is the Great Commission.  And two verses later they’re copying from 1 John 5:7, John 10:30 and John 14:11.

3 Nephi 11:28 says that anyone who disagrees with the establishment is of the devil.  Don’t even think about having your own opinion.  You will obey.

If you think that’s bad, just wait, there’s more.  From 11:32-40 you will find they’ve plagiarized the Bible 11 more times.  We’re listing only one example here.

 3 Nephi 11:39 plagiarizes Matthew 16:16 when it says;

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, that this is my doctrine, and whoso buildeth upon this buildeth upon my rock, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against them.

This chapter should be confusing for the Mormon people.  The text declares that Jesus is God and the gates of hell won’t prevail against the body of Christ.  Mormons emphatically denounce these two fundamentals of the Christian faith.  Why they’d use these verses is beyond me.

 Chapter Twelve Theme

Sermon on the Mount in the Americas and the 12 Nephite Apostles

This entire chapter with the exception of four verses is plagiarized from the Bible.

 Chapter Thirteen Theme

Plagiarizing Matthew 6

This chapter is word for word from Matthew chapter six.  I just have one question.

In 13:24 it says no man can serve two masters for he will hate the one and love the other…

Hasn’t anyone in the Church figured this out yet?  Their love of Joseph has caused them to hate Jesus.

All right, I changed my mind.  Why don’t they believe their own writings?  In 13:31 it says not to worry about food or clothing.  What’s up with the food storage?

 Chapter Fourteen Theme

The Mormon Jesus’ Continued Plagiarisms – Matthew 7

This chapter is twenty seven verses long and has been copied verbatim from Matthew chapter seven.

I asked a Mormon once if they’d believe the Bible if it said exactly the same thing that the Book of Mormon did.  Their answer?  Absolutely not.  They’d only believe the teaching if it was in the Book of Mormon.

 Chapter Fifteen Theme

 The Other Sheep

The main thing I’d want to convey to the Mormons in this chapter is to set the record straight about the other sheep that Jesus spoke of in the Bible.  The other sheep are not the Nephites, Jaredites, Lamanites or Zoramites in the Book of Mormon.

The other sheep He was referring to in the Bible are the Gentiles.  Show your Mormon friends and loved ones the truth next time you have the opportunity.  John 10:16.

3 Nephi 15:13 changes the whole scheme of things for the Jews.  America has now become the land of their inheritance.

In 15:15 they repeat the lie about receiving a commandment from God to leave Jerusalem.  See Jeremiah 42:10-17.

 Chapter Sixteen Theme

The Other Sheep are the Gentiles!

Not much happens here but the rhetoric of the Mormon Jesus talking about the Gentiles who believe in him.  From 16:18-20 is the repeating of Isaiah 52:8-10.

 Chapter Seventeen Theme

Jesus Heals the Children and Leaves to Search for the Lost Ten Tribes

There are just a couple of things to look at here.

In 17:1 the Mormon Jesus tells the crowd his time was at hand.  As a clarification here – Jesus’ time was at the crucifixion.

In verse four he tells them he’s gotta go talk to the lost ten tribes.  Nowhere in the Bible does it mention a “lost ten tribes of Israel”.  This theory was popular in the days of Joseph Smith.  Ethan Smith (no relation) wrote a novel called “View of the Hebrews”.  The premise of the story was that the Native American people were from the Israelites.

 Chapter Eighteen Theme

 Gorging on the Sacrament

After filling themselves from the bread and wine a dark cloud came and overshadowed all the people.  When the cloud disappeared Jesus had vanished.  Maybe the dark ominous cloud was a sign they were doing things wrong?

While plagiarizing the Bible on numerous occasions through this chapter it’s important to point out to the Mormon the significance of the elements taken at communion.

 The LDS Church has used water for the past 150 years or so and in doing so has watered down the true meaning of partaking the elements.  The other area that has dumbed down the thinking in this genre is believing Jesus paid the price for sin in the Garden of Gethsemane.  In 18:7 it says;

“And this shall ye do in remembrance of my body, which I have shown unto you…

 Compare that to what Paul said in 1 Corinthians 11:24;

“And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.

Jesus’ body was broken and given for them and us – not shown to them.

 Chapter Nineteen Theme

Raising the Dead and the Race Issue

Wow!  They opened up this story with the news that every man took his wife and kids and went home.

It wasn’t long after the “translation” when Joe started his polygamy practices – 1831 to be exact.

In 19:4 Smith uses the Greek names of Timothy (the guy who was raised from the dead) and Jonas which is the Greek form of Jonah.

In verse 18 they’re praying to Jesus which is something the Mormons of today are forbidden to do.  See Bruce McConkie’s speech in March 1982 when he clearly states that praying to Jesus is wrong.

Joseph’s “countenance” and obsession with white folks shines forth loud and clear when he describes the people who are righteous.

3 Nephi 19:25; “And it came to pass that Jesus blessed them as they did pray unto him; and his countenance did smile upon them, and the light of his countenance did shine upon them, and behold they were as white as the countenance and also the garments of Jesus

It’s repeated again in 19:30 that only the righteous are white.

The very last verse is another bad habit of Joseph’s which he passed down to his believers.  No one has greater faith than they do.  No one has seen or heard the things they have…

 Chapter Twenty Theme

 Communion Problems…Again…

This chapter makes Jesus sound like a magician.  The disciples were hungry again but had no bread or wine (vs. 6).  Lo and behold, in the next verse Jesus gave some to them.

Just a few verses later we’re told that when they ate and drank they were filled with the Holy Ghost (vs. 9).

Unbelievers are those who don’t have the companionship of the Holy Spirit.  Why were they partaking of the elements?

20:16-18 is taken from Micah chapter 5.

 20:18-20 is Micah chapter 4.

20:23-26 is taken from Acts chapter 3.

3 Nephi 20:38 says you can get saved without money.  In the Mormon Church of today that’s not possible.  At the end of each year the Mormons go to a “tithing settlement”.  If you don’t give at least ten percent of your gross income you can pay up in January or not get the needed temple recommend.

The rest of the chapter from 20:32-45 is taken from Isaiah chapter 52.

 Chapter Twenty One Theme

The Ongoing Grammar Problems of Joseph Smith…

3 Nephi 21:11; “Therefore it shall come to pass that whosoever will not believe in my words, who am Jesus Christ…

The verse above is just one example of the problem Joseph had with spelling, grammar and editing.  It’s also a sign of the other people he kept company with – no one was very educated.

3 Nephi 21:2-7 should be pointed out to your Mormon friend.  It is one sentence.

“And behold, this is the thing which I will give unto you for a sign—for verily I say unto you that when these things which I declare unto you, and which I shall declare unto you hereafter of myself, and by the power of the Holy Ghost which shall be given unto you of the Father, shall be made known unto the Gentiles that they may know concerning this people who are a remnant of the house of Jacob, and concerning this my people who shall be scattered by them; 3 Verily, verily, I say unto you, when these things shall be made known unto them of the Father, and shall come forth of the Father, from them unto you; 4 For it is wisdom in the Father that they should be established in this land, and be set up as a free people by the power of the Father, that these things might come forth from them unto a remnant of your seed, that the covenant of the Father may be fulfilled which he hath covenanted with his people, O house of Israel;  5 Therefore, when these works and the works which shall be wrought among you hereafter shall come forth from the Gentiles, unto your seed which shall dwindle in unbelief because of iniquity; 6 For thus it behooveth the Father that it should come forth from the Gentiles, that he may show forth his power unto the Gentiles, for this cause that the Gentiles, if they will not harden their hearts, that they may repent and come unto me and be baptized in my name and know of the true points of my doctrine, that they may be numbered among my people, O house of Israel; 7 And when these things come to pass that thy seed shall begin to know these things—it shall be a sign unto them, that they may know that the work of the Father hath already commenced unto the fulfilling of the covenant which he hath made unto the people who are of the house of Israel.

The chapter consists of Jesus telling the Nephites he will save the Gentiles and gather the lost tribes of Israel that he dispersed out of Jerusalem.  Remember, in the Bible this is exactly the opposite of what God told the Israelites to do – Jer. 42:10-17.

In 21:8-9 we find copying of Isaiah chapters 52 & 29 and in 21:12-19 are plagiarisms from Micah 5 again.

 Chapter Twenty Two Theme

 Plagiarizing Isaiah 54

This entire chapter is Isaiah 54.

 Chapter Twenty Three Theme

Jesus Wants Nephite Records to be Included

3 Nephi 23:7-9 take the number one spot for stupid things to write.

“And it came to pass that he said unto Nephi: Bring forth the record which ye have kept.  8 And when Nephi had brought forth the records, and laid them before him, he cast his eyes upon them and said: 9 Verily I say unto you, I commanded my servant Samuel, the Lamanite, that he should testify unto this people, that at the day that the Father should glorify his name in me that there were many saints who should arise from the dead, and should appear unto many, and should minister unto them. And he said unto them: Was it not so?

Okay, so Jesus tells Nephi to bring him the records and sacred writings.  Nephi lays them at Jesus’ feet.  Jesus takes a look at them, and summarily tells Nephi he left out some parts so they needed to be added to their text about Samuel the Lamanite.

 Honestly…

 Chapter Twenty Four Theme

 Plagiarizing Malachi chapter 3

This entire chapter is from Malachi 3.

 Chapter Twenty Five Theme

 Plagiarizing Malachi chapter 4

This entire chapter is from Malachi 4.

 Chapter Twenty Six Theme

Jesus  Plays the Part of a Courier and Delivers Scriptures from the Father

So after they’ve quoted extensively from Malachi Jesus finally tells Nephi and company that he has scriptures God the Father wanted him to hand deliver?  This is so strange (26:2)…

The rest of this chapter is more plagiarizing from 2 Peter, Revelations, 2 Corinthians, Acts and the gospel of John.  Nephi tells us that not everything can be written down and Jesus told them God will judge their works.

26:7-8 was written to confuse.  I am convinced Satan used Smith to confuse these people of Mormonism and to dumb down the masses.  He played Smith like a fiddle.

“But behold the plates of Nephi do contain the more part of the things which he taught the people.  8 And these things have I written, which are a lesser part of the things which he taught the people; and I have written them to the intent that they may be brought again unto this people, from the Gentiles, according to the words which Jesus hath spoken.

In verse 11 God supposedly told Mormon not to write all the things they needed to know because he wanted to try the people and test their faith.

If that verse isn’t scary enough to make you want to run the other way I don’t know what is.

In verse 15 Jesus ascended for the 2nd time.  Does this mean no one was raptured???

What do they think of Jesus’ real 2nd coming?

Verse 18 can’t be spoken about.

 Chapter Twenty Seven Theme

Jesus’ Third Appearance and the Name of the Church

In 27:5 Jesus tells the Nephites they have to name the Church after him with his name in it.

“Have they not read the scriptures, which say ye must take upon you the name of Christ, which is my name? For by this name shall ye be called at the last day.

3 Nephi 27:6 is the martyr call for every single Mormon…“endure to the end….

And the next few verses Jesus is reminding them again to name the church after him (vs. 7-9).

3 Nephi 27:14 is a maze of lies.

“And my Father sent me that I might be lifted up upon the cross; and after that I had been lifted up upon the cross, that I might draw all men unto me, that as I have been lifted up by men even so should men be lifted up by the Father, to stand before me, to be judged of their works, whether they be good or whether they be evil—

The only people who were judged by their works were the Israelites before Jesus came to die for our sins.  Today if you don’t believe in Him you will be judged by your works.  That is why Jesus went to the Calvary and paid the price for our sin on the Cross.  You will not be judged by your works for salvation if you’re a believer.  The Mormons don’t believe Jesus died on the cross to draw mankind to himself.  They believe he paid that price in the Garden of Gethsemane.

In 27:29 Smith has plagiarized Matthew 7:7.

Smith shows again that he doesn’t understand how God operates.  In verses 31- 32 he tells the crowd that everyone in their generation is saved, but watch out because four generations after them they won’t be.  He tells them that the fourth generation will be selling him for silver and gold.

How could this be?  How could they sell Jesus if He’s already risen and sitting on the right hand of God?

 Chapter Twenty Eight Theme

Jesus Promises Life Until Age 72…for Most of Them

This is the infamous chapter where Smith claimed the three Nephites didn’t taste death.  According to Mormon legend, they’re still wandering the earth somewhere.  If this were true, why was there a complete and utter apostasy?  Why weren’t those three Nephites out pounding pavement to see people saved?

In verses 19-22 we find out the prisons can’t hold the Nephite believers, furnaces can’t burn them and wild beasts can’t tear them apart.  Again, the stories always have to be bigger and better than the Bible.

In 28:26 Mormon tells us they’ve appeared to him but he’s not allowed to name names.  Ahh, that’s convenient…

 Chapter Twenty Nine Theme

Mormon Warns Unbelievers they’re Like the Son of Perdition

Remember, don’t think for yourself or have your own  opinion.

 Chapter Thirty Theme

 The Condemnation of the Gentile

The only thing worth mentioning in the two verses of this chapter is that all Gentiles are damned.

 If you’re not a Mormon you’re a Gentile.

Please, please pray for a Mormon today won’t you?

With Love in Christ,  Michelle Grim
