August 27 — The Only True and Living Church and a Grove of Trees. Ensign, ‘Joseph Smith—Prophet of the Restoration’, November 2009, p. 37 “If someone turns from these restored doctrines, where will he go to learn the true nature of God as taught in the grove of trees?

Where will he go to find the doctrines of the premortal existence, baptism for the dead, and eternal marriage? And where will he go to find the sealing powers that can bind husbands and wives and children beyond the grave?

“Through Joseph Smith have been restored all the powers, keys, teachings, and ordinances necessary for salvation and exaltation.” – Tad R. Callister (more…)

Ensign, ‘What Think Ye of Christ?’, November 1988, p. 65 “Man unquestionably has impressive powers… But after all our obedience and good works, we cannot be saved from the effects of our sins without the grace extended by the atonement of Jesus Christ… Man cannot earn his own salvation.” — Dallin H. Oaks (more…)

August 25 — Denial of Polygamy Means No Salvation. Journal of Discourses 3:266 “Now if any of you will deny the plurality of wives, and continue to do so, I promise that you will be damned; and I will go still further and say, take this revelation, or any other revelation that the Lord has given, and deny it in your feelings, and I promise that you will be damned.” – Brigham Young, Provo, July 14, 1855 (more…)

August 24 — Christians are Wicked Apostates, Murderers and Idolaters. The Seer, p. 205 “Q. After the Church of Christ fled from earth to heaven, what was left?

A set of wicked Apostates, murderers, and idolaters, who, after having made war with the saints, and overcome them, and destroyed them out of the earth, were left to follow the wicked imaginations of their own corrupt hearts, and to build up churches by human authority, and to follow after the cunning craftiness of uninspired men; having no Apostle, Prophet, or Revelator to inquire of God for them: and thus, because of wickedness, the Church, and Priesthood, and gifts, and ordinances and blessings of the everlasting Gospel, were taken from the earth, and reserved in heaven until the fulness of times, when it was predicted that they should again be restored among men to continue until the end should come.” – Orson Pratt (more…)

August 23 — Wafting Through Space as a God. Life of Heber C. Kimball, p. 513 “A man may become a God as Jesus Christ did. For this he must prepare himself while in the flesh, that he may be enthroned as a judge is enthroned. I have a desire that my children be crowned, and if I be enthroned I want to have the privilege of wafting myself by the power of God, to visit my children. Everything we see here is typical of what will be hereafter.” – Orson F. Whitney (more…)

August 19 — BoM Declares It May or May Not Be True. Matthew 8:26 “And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked.

_____

Not only does the Book of Mormon contain anachronistic problems along with its plagiarism we also see contradictions within its own text. Sometimes the Book of Mormon will tell you it’s completely trustworthy and at other times,  not so much.

I’d never thought of our Bible verse today in light of the Mormon’s faith, or the lack thereof. That was until I read Oswald Chambers devotional for August 12th. Chambers mentioned we should all rest in the Lord (how true!), and resting in Him includes doing so even during the stormy times in life.

_____

When push comes to shove, we all have a major decision in life to make. Do we instinctively fall back on our heritage and culture, in which we were raised? Or do we brave the storm by resting in Him, even if our decisions will cause the ship to overturn? Many times when we make a major change, expecting an overturned boat, we find our decision caused it to turn upright, not knowing the mess we had been in all along.

Nowhere in the Bible do we see the ambiguity we read about in the Book of Mormon! God’s word encourages study, discernment, and proving it for your life.

However, as our text today says, Jesus also expected us to trust and rest in Him. If you’re LDS, how do you trust the canon Joe Smith said was from God, when it blatantly says it isn’t always true?

August 18 — Millennial Star, No. 8, Vol. 26, February 20, 1864, pp. 118-119 “I met with the twelve at brother Joseph’s. He conversed with us in a familiar manner on a variety of subjects, and explained to us the Urim and Thummim which he found with the plates, called in the Book of Mormon the Interpreters. He said that every man who lived on the earth was entitled to a seer stone, and should have one, but they are kept from them in consequence of their wickedness and most of those who do find one make an evil use of it; he showed us his seer stone.” – Brigham Young (more…)

August 16 — Stalking Snakes in Book of Mormon. Ether 9:31-33 “And there came forth poisonous serpents also upon the face of the land, and did poison many people. And it came to pass that their flocks began to flee before the poisonous serpents, towards the land southward, which was called by the Nephites Zarahemla. 32 And it came to pass that there were many of them which did perish by the way; nevertheless, there were some which fled into the land southward. 33 And it came to pass that the Lord did cause the serpents that they should pursue them no more, but that they should hedge up the way that the people could not pass, that whoso should attempt to pass might fall by the poisonous serpents.” (more…)

August 15 — God’s Appearance in America c. BC 2,200. Ether 12:20-21 “And behold, we have seen in this record that one of these was the brother of Jared; for so great was his faith in God, that when God put forth his finger he could not hide it from the sight of the brother of Jared, because of his word which he had spoken unto him, which word he had obtained by faith. 21 And after the brother of Jared had beheld the finger of the Lord, because of the promise which the brother of Jared had obtained by faith, the Lord could not withhold anything from his sight; wherefore he showed him all things, for he could no longer be kept without the veil.” (more…)

August 14 — B.H. Roberts: BoM is Tale by a Child. Studies of the Book of Mormon, by B.H. Roberts, p. 251 “If from all that has gone before in Part 1, the view be taken that the Book of Mormon is merely of human origin… if it be assumed that he is the author of it, then it could be said there is much internal evidence in the book itself to sustain such a view.
“In the first place there is a certain lack of perspective in the things the book relates as history that points quite clearly to an underdeveloped mind as their origin. The narrative proceeds in characteristic disregard of conditions necessary to its reasonableness, as if it were a tale told by a child, with utter disregard for consistency.” (more…)

August 13 — Reverence for Joseph Smith Required. “A Choice Seer,” Ensign, Aug. 1986 “Ages ago in the Great Council, Jesus was the prepared but meek Volunteer. As the Father described the plan of salvation and the need for a Savior, it was Jesus who stepped forward and said humbly but courageously, ‘Here am I, send me.’ (Abr. 3:27; see also Moses 4:2.) Never has anyone offered to do so much for so many with so few words!

“It is through the Prophet Joseph Smith, whom the resurrected Jesus called, that we learn these things and so much more about Jesus–long before Bethlehem and well beyond Calvary.

“Whenever we speak of the Prophet Joseph Smith, therefore, it should be in reverent appreciation of the Lord who called him and whom Joseph served so well.” – Neal A. Maxwell (more…)

You will clearly perceive, from the revelation which God has given, that you can never obtain a fulness of glory, without being married to a righteous man for time and for all eternity.” – Orson Pratt (See Conference Report October 1946 p. 36, where Joseph Fielding Smith is quoting Orson Pratt in reference above.)  August 9 — Cain, Nephi and Joe Smith Born of Goodly Parents. If there’s ever been a group of people cut from the same cloth, leaders of Mormonism surely fit the bill. Check out the vocabulary these self-proclaimed men of God have used to describe Cain, Joseph Smith and his parents, as well as their prophet Nephi.

Cain Born of Goodly Parents?

The Way to Perfection, pp. 97 – 98 “BORN OF GOODLY PARENTS Cain was born of goodly parents. Michael, the great prince, who helped form the earth, was his father. No man, save Jesus Christ, was ever blessed with greater honor or responsibility than Michael. No man deserved to be honored more than he. He had been given the first place in the history of the world and was taught directly from the heavens. Cain had the great honor of being Adam’s son, and he, too, was privileged with the same blessings as his father. What a mighty man he could have been! How his name might have stood out with excellent luster as that of one of the valiant sons of God! How he might have been honored to the latest generation! But he would have none of it!” – Joseph Fielding Smith [emp. added]

August 7 — Spirit World Here on Earth. Selected Writings of Daniel H. Ludlow: Gospel Scholars Series: p. 289 “Is the postmortal spirit world the same as the pre-earthly spirit world? No. Where is the postmortal spirit world? It is on this earth. Brigham Young: “When you lay down this tabernacle, where are you going? Into the spiritual world. . . . Where is the spirit world? It is right here. Do the good and evil spirits go together? Yes, they do. Do they both inhabit one kingdom? Yes, they do. . . . Do they go beyond the boundaries of the organized earth? No, they do not.” Brigham Young: “The spirit world . . . is on this earth.”” (Discourses of Brigham Young, p. 576.) (more…)
