stickman thinking 3Well today proved itself to be an interesting one in the world of Mormon racism. A Google Alert came to my e-mail box talking of a ban on the Samoan language in Mormon worship services in Brisbane where many Samoans reside.

stickman thinking 3To say that I’m appalled because of an article I read in the Salt Lake Trib would be an understatement. You’ll take note that I didn’t say surprised.

According to this report the Church openly read a letter to their congregations in Hawaii urging them to call their legislatures in protest against the new gay marriage bill coming up for a vote in their state.

stickman thinking 3Just a quick sobering thought about the front page of the LDS Church’s website…

Today (9/18/13) I meandered over to the Church’s website to grab some info for a project I’m working on.  Unfortunately I got sidetracked (not a surprise…) with the message they have on their front page.  It said;

In a General Conference address Glen L. Pace said:

“You can leave the Church, but you can’t leave it alone. The basic reason for this is simple. Once someone has received a witness of the Spirit and accepted it, he leaves neutral ground. One loses his testimony only by listening to the promptings of the evil one, and Satan’s goal is not complete when a person leaves the Church, but when he comes out in open rebellion against it.”  (April 1989, LDS Conference Address)

Steve YoungWhat are they thinking???

Clad in street clothing with temple garments securely in place underneath, Steve Young, former quarterback of the San Francisco Forty-Niners, was a keynote speaker at a conference in Salt Lake City this past weekend.

stickman thinking 3Earlier today Melissa sent me an e-mail sharing her thoughts from the Bible study she’s doing right now and because I believe this is such a classic example of the way Mormons think we’re posting our e-mail exchange with our readers!

stickman thinking 3If you’ve ever hung around Mormons you might have heard them say something like it doesn’t affect our salvation, or it’s not necessary for our salvation. It’s a saying I heard a lot when I attended Sunday school, Relief Society or anytime someone had had one of those questions a teacher or church leader chose not to answer.

Maybe they didn’t have an answer, didn’t want to get side-tracked from the lesson, or maybe in the back of their minds they feared the answer. Going deeper into the scriptures and doctrines of the church to discover the answers could unearth a whole mess of questions, feelings and doubts the faithful Mormon doesn’t what to think about.

Quick Thought on Mormons and Their Church

In a speech at BYU Jeffery R. Holland said:

“For anyone out there seeking the courage to repent and change, I remind you that the Church is not a monastery for the isolation of perfect people. It is more like a hospital provided for those who wish to get well. Do whatever you have to do to come into the fold and be blessed” (BYU Speeches, May 2, 1997)

Quick thought on Mormons and Grace

Today on the Facebook page of Mormon.org their post reads:

“Mormons believe that through grace, the divine help and strength given through the mercy and love of Jesus Christ, all mankind will be resurrected. Through His grace, those who desire to change for the better and live according to His gospel will feel an enduring closeness to God in this life and live in His presence after this life. How have you felt the love of Jesus Christ in your life recently?”

stickman thinking 3It never fails. No matter what God inspired scripture leaders of the LDS Church come up with, revisions are always made to their works.

I’m wondering why their scriptures always have to be revised if it came from God? Did God change his mind or was it mankind?

This time around we’re dealing with the 13 Articles of Faith of Mormonism which used to be the 14 Articles of Faith.

Thought of the Day about Mormonism and Facebook

stickman thinking 3Today Melissa sent me an e-mail with the picture that’s at the end of this article. She found it on the LDS’ Facebook page under other miscellaneous photos they provided for members to attach to their FB pages.

Melissa was telling me the first thing she thought of was how she couldn’t get the words “obey” and “law” out of her head. She said they make it sound like God is some sort of dictator and I couldn’t agree more!

stickman thinking 3On the LDS website I came across an interesting submission in the student manuals on presidents of the Church.

The write-up of John Taylor, 3rd president of the Church, paints a picture of a man who had done nothing wrong and the feds went after him because he announced that he was a Christian.

Here’s what they had to say;

stickman thinking 3A knock on my door this afternoon provided me with an hour long witnessing opportunity!  Two freshly scrubbed faces of Mormonism stood on my doorstep ready to share the “gospel” with me.

One is from Weatherford, TX and the other from somewhere in Idaho. PRAY FOR THEM PLEASE!!!

Miss Idaho told me that “Adam was a prophet who preached to everyone about the church”. I suppose the look on my face spoke volumes as she asked me if I was okay. Our conversation went from the meaning of the word prophet to when the other missionary told me it was “by grace Jesus went to the Garden to pay the Atonement”.

stickman thinking 3Journal of Discourses 23:280; “…Whatever men’s laws may be we cannot deny the truth of God, the revelations of God. I cannot do it, I would be damned and go to hell if I were to do it….” – George Q. Cannon, Salt Lake City, October 8, 1882

So did George Cannon go to the Celestial Kingdom or not?

Brigham Young once said; “How easy it would be for your leaders to lead you to destruction, unless you actually know the mind and will of the Spirit yourselves. That is your privilege. And when you testify in this public congregation, or in your prayer meetings, testifying of the things of God that you know and understand, you are at liberty to speak freely upon those things which you believe.” – Journal of Discourses 4:368, Salt Lake City, June 28, 1857

And likewise his counterpart LDS prophet Joseph F. Smith said, “We talk of obedience, but do we require any man or woman to ignorantly obey the counsels that are given? Do the First Presidency require it? No, never.”Journal of Discourses 16:248, Salt Lake City, October 7, 1873

stickman thinking 3While doing research I came upon the quotes above which gave me pause…

I don’t recall receiving this type of reaction from anyone in the Church when I began openly questioning my heritage.  Do you?  As a matter of fact the more I openly questioned, the more I found myself being pushed away by teachers and fellow Mormons. The sad part about this scenario is that I’ve found I’m not alone.

I received another e-mail this morning from a brand new ex-Mormon Christian who will hopefully be sharing her testimony here soon!  PTL for her salvation!

George Washington's QuestionYou probably saw this title and thought “Wait a minute – what?!?”

That’s what I thought as I was reading some letters of George Washington written during the time he led this country to its independence.

I confess, I’m obsessed with the history of wars.  My true love of war history is my obsession with all things that have to do with WW2 and Hitler, but the Civil and Revolutionary Wars hold a close second.

stickman thinking 3I’ve often wondered how many Mormons are familiar with the conversion story of the Apostle Paul. I wonder if they know he authored thirteen of the twenty-seven books of the New Testament (some credit him w/ Hebrews making it fourteen).

I wonder if they’re aware of who he was as Saul of Tarsus and who he became as Paul the Christian missionary.  I know that as a Mormon I’d never heard of him. I hadn’t spent the time to discover Jesus appeared to him on the road to Damascus, nor did I know he was beheaded in Rome for declaring the gospel.

stickman thinking 3I know it’s odd to read anything from me in this type of format!  Yikes!  I thought it was needed to explain the postings for the past few days.

Typically I have my postings written up to a month in advance and then post them automatically to the date I need/want them to be read.

About ten days ago I came down with a cold and while battling that I had a severe reaction to seasonal allergies.  While I love all the gorgeous pink blossoms on flowering cherry and plum trees in my area, they cause me and my sinuses a great deal of grief.  To complicate matters I have MS – no boring days in my life!  Without going into ad nausea detail I need to be well for my treatments and this is where you come in!

stickman thinking 3Living in Seattle affords me the blessing of having an abundance of seafood, namely halibut.   The downside to living near any fresh halibut is that you only have two seasons; summer and winter.  Summer begins on the 5th of July and lasts all the way to mid September in warm years.  Woo-hoo! All joking aside, in addition to Boeing, Microsoft and Amazon this area is known for shipping and sailors and if you stick around long enough you’re sure to learn a little about the latter.  After living in the Pacific Northwest for twenty years I’ve learned how long it takes to get from the Port of Seattle through the Behring Strait to Alaska or to one of my favorite hideaways in the San Juan Islands.

stickman thinking 31 Nephi 14:10; “And he said unto me: Behold there are save two churches only; the one is the church of the Lamb of God, and the other is the church of the devil; wherefore, whoso belongeth not to the church of the Lamb of God belongeth to that great church, which is the mother of abominations; and she is the whore of all the earth.”

As the world watched the chimney at the Sistine Chapel puff out its white smoke signaling Catholics worldwide had a new pope, the LDS Church responded with a congratulatory smoke signal of their own.
