Mormon Decisions 10Ensign, ‘The Reason for Our Hope,’ November 2014; “The Savior wrought the Atonement, which provides a way for us to become clean. Jesus Christ is the resurrected Christ. We worship and recognize Him for the pain He suffered for us collectively and for the pain He endured for each of us individually, both in the Garden of Gethsemane and on the cross. He bore all with great humility and with an eternal understanding of His divine role and purpose.

Mormon Decisions 10Ensign, ‘The Lost 500 Years: From Malachi to John the Baptist,’ December 2014; “Most of the scrolls are severely fragmented because of age and exposure to the elements, but scholars have been able to glean a wealth of information about the scribal practices. The scribes’ careful and meticulous work indicates a high level of professionalism and competence as they copied and transmitted sacred texts from one generation to the next. Those of us who love and appreciate the holy scriptures owe a great debt to these scribes for their careful work.

Mormon Decisions 10PBS, The Mormons; “One area of the Book of Mormon that does bother some is what they see as anachronistic doctrine; that the Book of Mormon has Christian doctrine prior to the coming of Christ; that it has seemingly New Testament doctrines appearing centuries before Jesus arrives, and it seems to be representing a form of Christianity existing in the New World where there doesn’t seem to be much evidence of that archaeologically. Christianity is invisible in the New World prior to the coming of Columbus, and so those things seem like clear anachronisms to people looking at it in that way.” – Daniel C. Peterson

Mormon Decisions 10Conference Report, First Day Afternoon Meeting, October 1953, p 35; “Jesus then went into the Garden of Gethsemane. There he suffered most. He suffered greatly on the cross, of course, but other men had died by crucifixion; in fact, a man hung on either side of him as he died on the cross. But no man, nor set of men, nor all men put together, ever suffered what the Redeemer suffered in the garden. He went there to pray and suffer.” – Marion Romney

Mormon Decisions 10Evidences and Reconciliations, p 282; “The Church ever operates in full light. There is no secrecy about its doctrine, aim, or work. It is open to all men who will conform to its requirements. Access to the temples, where the most sacred ordinances are performed, may be had by every member of the Church who lives the honorable life expected of faithful Latter-day Saints. No promise is exacted of any Church member except to live as nearly as may be in conformity with the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. The activities of the Church, in all departments, are sacred, not secret.” – John A. Widtsoe

‘Because I’m scared’… ‘I’ll lose too much’…11%…

crosses 3Yesterday I came across a website that reminded me of why I’m in ministry. Today I renewed my efforts to be more zealous in the call He’s laid upon my heart. Today I hit my knees and cried out to Him again to save my people, the Mormons.

Mormon Decisions 10Journal of Discourses 10:114; “It is not fully comprehended why it was necessary that Jesus Christ should leave the heavens, his Father’s abode and presence, and come upon the earth to offer himself up a sacrifice; that he should, according to the Scripture saying, “Take away sin by the sacrifice of himself;” why this should be, why it was necessary that his blood should be shed is an apparent mystery. It is true that we are told that without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins; but why this? Why should such a law exist?…Jesus Christ is spoken of in the Scriptures as “The Lamb of God that taketh away the sins of the world.” What sins of the world did he take away? We are told that it is the sin which Adam committed. We do not know much about Adam nor what he did; but we know that this sacrifice took place and that we are in the position we now occupy, and we are ready to believe…it was the will of God…” – John Taylor, Salt Lake City, February 22, 1863

Mormon Decisions 10Journal of Discourses 23:343-344; “The God whom the “Christians” worship is a being of their own creation–if, indeed, there can be such a being as they describe him to be; they have formed certain notions concerning deity, and then they have formulated those notions into articles of faith or religion.” –  Charles W. Penrose, Salt Lake City, January 14, 1883

Such men of the present dispensation have been Joseph Smith and his successors in office.” – John A. Widtsoe

Mormon Decisions 10Ensign, ‘Teaching and Learning by the Spirit,’ March 1997, p 16; “Just as Kolob is the source of light for other stars and planets (see Facsimile 2, fig. 5), Jesus Christ is the source of light for the immensity of space, including the sun, moon, stars, and earth (D&C 88:5–13).” – Dallin Oaks

Mormon Decisions 10Gospel Through the Ages, p 107; “ In the words of Dr. John A. Widtsoe, “God and man are of the same race, differing only in their degrees of advancement.” Additional light is thrown on the subject by Charles W. Penrose:

“To know God we must know ourselves. All the personal attributes which are ascribed to God by inspired men, we find in ourselves. . . . Mormonism does not tend to debase God to the level of man, but to exalt man to the perfection of God.”” – Milton Hunter

Mormon Decisions 10Miracle of Forgiveness, p 206; “One of the most fallacious doctrines originated by Satan and propounded by man is that man is saved alone by the grace of God; that belief in Jesus Christ alone is all that is needed for salvation. Along with all the other works necessary for man’s exaltation in the kingdom of God this could rule out the need for repentance. It could give license for sin and, since it does not require man to work out his salvation, could accept instead lip service, death-bed “repentance,” and shallow, meaningless confession of sin.” – Spencer W. Kimball

Mormon Decisions 10Messenger and Advocate, Vol. 2, No. 7, pp 289, 300, April 1836; “I  am aware, that many who profess to preach the gospel, complain against their brethren of the same faith, who reside in the south, and are ready to withdraw the hand of fellowship because they will not renounce the principle of slavery and raise their voice against every thing of the kind. This must be a tender point, and one which should call forth the candid reflection of all men, and especially before they advance in an opposition calculated to lay waste the fair States of the South, and set loose, upon the world a community of people who might peradventure, overrun our country and violate the most sacred principles of human society, – chastity and virtue.” – Joseph Smith

salt lake mormon temple 2Ensign, ‘The Role of Righteous Women,’ November 1979; “Finally, my dear sisters, may I suggest to you something that has not been said before or at least in quite this way. Much of the major growth that is coming to the Church in the last days will come because many of the good women of the world will be drawn to the Church in large numbers.  This will happen to the degree that the women of the Church reflect righteousness and articulateness in their lives and to the degree that the women of the church are seen as distinct and different–in happy ways–from the women of the world.” – President Spencer W. Kimball

Mormon Decisions 10Ensign, ‘This is the Greatest of All Dispensations,’ July 2007; “God is eagerly waiting for the chance to answer your prayers and fulfill your dreams, just as he always has. But he can’t if you don’t pray, and he can’t if you don’t dream. In short, he can’t if you don’t believe.” – Jeffery R. Holland

Mormon Decisions 10General Conference, ‘If Ye Love Me Keep My Commandments,’ October 2014; “In the premortal Council in Heaven, Lucifer rebelled against Heavenly Father’s plan. Those who followed Lucifer ended their eternal progression—be careful who you follow!

Then Jesus expressed His commitment to obey, saying, “Father, thy will be done, and the glory be thine forever.”1 … Because our Savior was obedient, He atoned for our sins, making possible our resurrection and preparing the way for us to return to our Heavenly Father, who knew we would make mistakes as we learned obedience in mortality. When we obey, we accept His sacrifice, for we believe that through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws, ordinances, and commandments given in the gospel.4

He gets the spirit of the devil—the same spirit that they had who crucified the Lord of Life—the same spirit that sins against the Holy Ghost.” (Teachings, p. 358.)” – Joseph Smith

Mormon Decisions 10Doctrine and Covenants Student Manual, pp 217-222; “D&C 93:6–18. What Is the “Record of John”? Elder Bruce R. McConkie wrote:

“John the Baptist [was] destined to write of the gospel of that Lord whose witness he is, but his account, perhaps because it contains truths and concepts that the saints and the world are not yet prepared to receive, has so far not been given to men. On May 6, 1833, however, the Lord did reveal to Joseph Smith eleven verses of the Baptist’s writings, and promised that ‘the fulness of the record of John’ would be revealed when the faith of men entitled them to receive it. (D&C 93:6–18.)
