Doctrine and Covenants 84:86, 91 “Therefore, let no man among you, for this commandment is unto all the faithful who are called of God in the church unto the ministry, from this hour take purse or scrip, that goeth forth to proclaim this gospel of the kingdom. 91 And he that doeth not these things is not my disciple; by this you may know my disciples.” — 1832 (more…)

When Did Baptisms Begin?

Articles of Faith, p. 123 “The Establishment of Baptism dates from the time of the earliest history of the race. When the Lord manifested Himself to Adam after the expulsion from the Garden of Eden, He promised the patriarch of the race: “If thou wilt turn unto me, and hearken unto my voice, and believe, and repent of all thy transgressions, and be baptized, even in water, in the name of mine Only Begotten Son…ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost…” (more…)

2 Nephi 2:18 “And because he had fallen from heaven, and had become miserable forever, he sought also the misery of all mankind. Wherefore, he said unto Eve, yea, even that old serpent, who is the devil, who is the father of all lies, wherefore he said: Partake of the forbidden fruit, and ye shall not die, but ye shall be as God, knowing good and evil.” – BC 588-570 (more…)

Doctrine and Covenants Student Manual, Section 35, pp. 71-72D&C Student Manual; “D&C 35:17–19. “I Have Sent Forth the Gospel by the Hand of My Servant Joseph” Elder Wilford Woodruff taught clearly how the Prophet Joseph Smith fulfilled the great prophecies of the Restoration: “Here is laid the foundation of the fulfillment of that mighty flood of prophecy delivered since the days of Father Adam down to the last Prophet who breathed the breath of life. There has been more prophecy fulfilled in the last forty-three years upon the face of the earth, than in two thousand years before.”

March 21 — Melchizedek Priesthood Qualifications. Hebrews 7:1-3, 26 “For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him; 2 To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace; 3 Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually. 26 For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens.” (more…)

Omni 1:25-26 “And it came to pass that I began to be old; and, having no seed, and knowing king Benjamin to be a just man before the Lord, wherefore, I shall deliver up these plates unto him, exhorting all men to come unto God, the Holy One of Israel, and believe in prophesying, and in revelations, and in the ministering of angels, and in the gift of speaking with tongues, and in the gift of interpreting languages, and in all things which are good; for there is nothing which is good save it comes from the Lord; and that which is evil cometh from the devil. 26 And now, my beloved brethren, I would that ye should come unto Christ, who is the Holy One of Israel, and partake of his salvation, and the power of his redemption. Yea, come unto him, and offer your whole souls as an offering unto him, and continue in fasting and praying, and endure to the end; and as the Lord liveth ye will be saved.” 323–130 B.C.  March 11 – How to be born again. John 3:2-6, 15; “The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. 3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? 5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.”

‘For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.’ 1 Corinthians 1:18

Joseph Smith made an incredible claim about his version of the gospel no one should overlook. We can read his so-called prophecy about the Book of Mormon in his other work, the Doctrine and Covenants.

Doctrine and Covenants 20:9 “Which contains a record of a fallen people, and the fulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles and to the Jews also”.

Today our question is this — (more…)

Doctrine and Covenants 130:22 “The Father has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man’s; the Son also; but the Holy Ghost has not a body of flesh and bones, but is a personage of Spirit. Were it not so, the Holy Ghost could not dwell in us.” — April 22, 1843 (more…)

February 9 – Joseph Smith. Is He Your God? Philippians 3:17-20; “Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample.  18 (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: 19 Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.)  20 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ.” (more…)

“Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they make you vain:  they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the Lord.” Jeremiah 23:16

Today we’re looking at another revelation claim made by Joseph Smith in 1831. This revelation was originally meant for Orson Hyde, Luke S. Johnson, Lyman E. Johnson, and William E. McLellin. Smith ‘expanded’ its meaning before it was eventually canonized in 1835.

Doctrine and Covenants 68: Intro, 2-4 “…1–5, The words of the elders when moved upon by the Holy Ghost are scripture…And, behold, and lo, this is an ensample unto all those who were ordained unto this priesthood, whose mission is appointed unto them to go forth— 3 And this is the ensample unto them, that they shall speak as they are moved upon by the Holy Ghost. 4 And whatsoever they shall speak when moved upon by the Holy Ghost shall be scripture, shall be the will of the Lord, shall be the mind of the Lord, shall be the word of the Lord, shall be the voice of the Lord, and the power of God unto salvation.” — Joseph Smith, Hiram, Ohio, November 1, 1831   (more…)

February 8 – Trusting Wrong Translators. 2 Peter 1:20-21 “Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” (more…)

General Conference, ‘Book of Mormon Geography,’ April 1929, pp. 15-16 “There is a great deal of talk about the geography of the Book of Mormon. Where was Zarahemla? Where was the City of Zarahemla? and other geographic matters. It doesn’t make any difference to us. There has never been anything yet set forth that definitively settles the question. So the Church says we are just waiting until we discover the truth. … We do not offer any definite solution. As  you study the Book of Mormon keep these things in mind and do not make definite statements concerning things that have not been proven in advance to be true.” — Anthony W. Ivins, Apostle

A few days ago Melissa gave me a heads up about the latest installment of the Church’s essays.

She came across a YouTube video discussing how earlier this month the Church quietly placed the latest addition in the Gospel Topics section of their website. (more…)

John 4:24 “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”

Numbers 23:19 “God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?”

Alma 31:15 “Holy, holy God; we believe that thou art God, and we believe that thou art holy, and that thou wast a spirit, and that thou art a spirit, and that thou wilt be a spirit forever.”

Doctrine and Covenants 130:22 “The Father has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man’s; the Son also; but the Holy Ghost has not a body of flesh and bones, but is a personage of Spirit. Were it not so, the Holy Ghost could not dwell in us.” — Joseph Smith, April 1843

Today we’ve listed God’s word first as a reminder the measure of truth comes from God and none else.

If a Mormon were to search for a description of their god, they’re going to find a number of problems. Is their god an exalted man, or a spirit? The Book of Mormon states he’s a spirit, but their founder Joe Smith, said he’s an exalted man. (more…)

Doctrines of Salvation 1:74 “ADAM AND OTHERS HELPED IN CREATION. It is true that Adam helped to form this earth. He labored with our Savior Jesus Christ. I have a strong view or conviction that there were others also who assisted them. Perhaps Noah and Enoch; and why not Joseph Smith, and those who were appointed to be rulers before the earth was formed? We know that Jesus our Savior was a Spirit when this great work was done. He did all of these mighty works before he tabernacled in the flesh.” — Joseph Fielding Smith (more…)
