BoM “Translated” through Witchcraft

Mormon Decisions 10Ensign, July 1993, “A Treasured Testament,” pg 61; “The details of this miraculous method of translation are still not fully known. Yet we do have a few precious insights. David Whitmer wrote: “Joseph Smith would put the seer stone into a hat, and put his face in the hat, drawing it closely around his face to exclude the light; and in the darkness the spiritual light would shine. A piece of something resembling parchment would appear, and on that appeared the writing. One character at a time would appear, and under it was the interpretation in English. Brother Joseph would read off the English to Oliver Cowdery, who was his principal scribe, and when it was written down and repeated to Brother Joseph to see if it was correct, then it would disappear, and another character with the interpretation would appear. Thus the Book of Mormon was translated by the gift and power of God, and not by any power of man.” (David Whitmer, An Address to All Believers in Christ, Richmond, Mo.: n.p., 1887, p. 12.)” – Russell M. Nelson

World Religions2

We’ve seen a surge in our search engine reports and e-mails requesting more information on Mormonism compared to other world religions.  In the twenty plus years I’ve been in ministry I’m seeing more and more similarities in these religions and Mormonism so I, along with my volunteers, find ourselves writing about this a lot!

So what are the similarities?  You’ll be surprised to find there are more similarities than not when dealing with Mormonism. What we found odd is the Church seems nonplussed that outsiders point them out. Oh the tangled web we weave…

In light of that, we’ve pulled our articles together and yep, you guessed it – it’s in a widget to the right or you can check it out by clicking here!  🙂

pentagramI’m posting this chart in response to the many e-mails I receive asking for definitions on Witchcraft, Satanism and Mormonism. This chart is part of a PowerPoint presentation I use when I’m asked to lecture at churches and schools.

This chart doesn’t include the side-by-side examples of Mormon beliefs, but you can download a chart for that here. It’s called Handouts for Witnessing. Between all the Mormon scriptures, Witchcraft and Satanism you’ll be prepared in knowing how to defend your faith with the Bible & see why God abhors worshiping anyone or anything but Him!

Hill Cumorah Gold Diggers

Mormon Decisions 10Readings in L.D.S. Church History from Original Manuscripts, Vol. 1, pg 63; “I will tell you a wonderful thing that happened after Joseph had found the plates. Three of us took some tools to go to the hill [Cumorah] and hunt for some more boxes, or gold or something, and indeed we found a stone box. We got quite excited about it and dug quite carefully around it, and we were ready to take it up, but behold, by some unseen power it slipped back into the hill. We stood there and looked at it, and one of us took a crow bar and tried to drive it through the lid to hold it, but it glanced and broke one corner off the box.” – High Priest Martin Harris, one of the Three Witnesses, see William E. Berrett and Alma P. Burton, eds.

Seer Stones for Righteous

Mormon Decisions 10Millennial Star, No. 8, Vol. 26, February 27, 1864, pg 118-119; “27 I met with the twelve at brother Joseph’s.  He conversed with us in a familiar manner on a variety of subjects, and explained to us the Urim and Thummim which he found with the plates, called in the Book of Mormon the Interpreters.  He said that every man who lived on the earth was entitled to a seer stone, and should have one, but they are kept from them in consequence of their wickedness and most of those who do find one make an evil use of it; he showed us his seer stone.” – Brigham Young

2 Thess. 2:9-11; “Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie.”

Angels

Mormon Decisions 10Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pg 162; “…An angel of God never has wings. Some will say that they have seen a spirit; that he offered them his hand, but they did not touch it. This is a lie. First, it is contrary to the plan of God; a spirit cannot come but in glory; an angel has flesh and bones; we see not their glory. The devil may appear as an angel of light. Ask God to reveal it; if it be of the devil, he will flee from you; if of God, He will manifest Himself, or make it manifest. We may come to Jesus and ask Him; He will know all about it; if He comes to a little child, he will adapt himself to the language and capacity of a little child.”

Isaiah 6:1-2; “In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. 2 Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.”

In celebration of my son’s birthday my husband and I treated the family to dinner and a movie the other night. As we watched the previews I was shocked at the amount of the new occult like movies that are going to be marketed to young kids. One movie is about a young boy who can see and talk to the dead, and the other is about yet another boy who brings his beloved, deceased pet back to life.

Is it just me, or are we seeing a lot of this type of genre marketing to our kids and teens lately? I have to say it grieves my heart to see so much of our modern media promoting the works of darkness and labeling it “entertainment”. I like to tell them “just because something is done in cartoon form doesn’t somehow soften the fact that the film at its core is about necromancy” as we see by the first two examples.

The Book of Commandments and the Doctrine and Covenants Compared

Today’s dilemma is a side by side example of changes made when the Church rewrote the Book of Commandments and renamed it the Doctrine and Covenants.  This particular revelation was given by Joseph Smith to Oliver Cowdery in April 1829.  Cowdery, hoping God would allow him to be the scribe for Smith, asked Smith if God had any special message for him personally.
