The Occult in Mormonism and the Life of Joseph Smith

2 Kings 17:16; “And they left all the commandments of the LORD their God, and made them molten images, even two calves, and made a grove, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served Baal.”
The very foundation of Mormonism is a deliberate, not to mention brazen, show of the many tentacles of the Occult at its best. Therefore, it goes without saying the latter issue must be acknowledged if we’re to provide an honest picture of the former.
It’s virtually impossible to discuss Mormonism without acknowledging the cultic practices of Joseph Smith. For this reason, we’ve compiled a list of the more common paraphernalia he and his family used, upon which, the Mormon Church is built.

LDS Hymn, ‘Address to Earth,’ by Eliza Roxcy Snow;
Millennial Star, Vol. 13, No. 17, September 1, 1857, p. 272
Thou, earth, wast once a glorious sphere
Of Noble Magnitude
That did with majesty appear
Among the worlds of God.
But they dimensions have been torn
Asunder piece by piece;
And each dismember’d fragment borne
Abroad to distant space.

It’s been almost ten years since the Lord saved me from Mormonism. In that time I’ve learned so much about God, salvation and the gospel of Jesus Christ. I still have a lot to learn, but I’m trusting in Him to teach me as I continue to walk with Him.
So when I hear of believers who have walked with Him so much longer than I have embracing things that are clearly pagan, unbiblical, or just plain silly it breaks my heart.

A New Witness for Christ in America, ‘Interview with the Father of Joseph Smith, the Mormon Prophet…,’ 2:384; “This Joseph Smith, Senior, we soon learned, from his own lips, was a firm believer in witchcraft and other supernatural things; and had brought up his family in the same belief. He also believed that there was a vast amount of money buried somewhere in the country; that it would someday be found; that he himself had spent both time and money searching for it, with divining rods, but had not succeeded in finding any, though sure that he eventually would.” – Francis W. Joseph Smith’s New York Reputation Reexamined by Rodger I. Anderson, pp 154-155; “I was born in Palmyra, N.Y., near where old Jo Smith settled, January 4, 1807. I attended school with Prophet Jo. His father taught me to mow. I worked with old and young Jo at farming. I have frequently seen old Jo drunk. Young Jo had a forked witch-hazel rod with which he claimed he could locate buried money or hidden things. Later he had a peep-stone which he put into his hat and looked into it. I have seen both. Joshua Stafford, a good citizen, told me that young Jo Smith and himself dug for money in his orchard and elsewhere nights. All the money digging was done nights. I saw the holes in the orchard [p.155] which were four or five feet square and three or four feet deep. Jo and others dug much about Palmyra and Manchester. I have seen many of the holes. The first thing he claimed to find was gold plates of the “Book of Mormon,” which he kept in a pillowcase and would let people lift, but not see…

Today we’re doing things a little differently – woo-hoo!
Go back in your memory bank – way back. Try to remember your very first memory in life that you hold most dear and just think upon that for a moment.
Got it? That tender memory you hold most dear is guarded with the utmost respect and we pamper that memory as if we’re protecting the small child in your memory. You don’t let anyone or anything that could bring harm to come within reach of that kid (probably you) and such is the case with our fondest memory .

Marvelous Word and a Wonder, p 67; “…(Isaiah 29:1-4.) Isaiah saw the downfall of Ariel, or Jerusalem, at a time far in the future, “add ye year to year.” Then he seems to have been carried away in vision to witness a similar destruction of the cities of Joseph, “and it shall be unto me as Ariel.” He describes how they would be besieged and forts would be raised against them. They would be brought down and would speak out of the ground. Their speech would be “low out of the dust”; their voice would be as one that hath a familiar spirit, out of the ground; and their speech would whisper out of the dust. Now, obviously, the only way a dead people could speak “out of the ground” or “low out of the dust” would be by the written word, and this the people did through the Book of Mormon. Truly it has a familiar spirit, for it contains the words of the prophets of the God of Israel.” – LeGrand Richards

2 Nephi 18:19; “And when they shall say unto you: Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep and mutter—should not a people seek unto their God for the living to hear from the dead? 20 To the law and to the testimony; and if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.”

False Prophecies of Mormonism Truth and Evil Must Coexist with Each Other

Millennial Star, Vol. 17, No. 50, December 15, 1855, pg 785; “It is evident that truth, and its opposite, or the principles of good and evil must be co-existent with each other, and that the presence of one has ever been necessary to develop the nature and powers of the other. From this it would appear that organizations and intelligences must experience the effects of evil in order to understand its opposite, be redeemed by a sacrifice similar to the made for this earth, and receive purification, sanctification, and final redemption through faith, good works and obedience to similar laws and ordinances. Co-existent with the Gods of Eternity, there must have always been personal representatives of evil, or devils for them to subdue, in order that there might be an opposite in all things. Without opposition there can be no progression; without hate, no love; without darkness, no light; without sorrow, no joy; without a hell, no heaven; without devils, no Gods. All things must necessarily work out the designs of the Almighty, and increase His glory, exaltation, and power.”

Last year we wrote an article about the jewelry sold on the Deseret Book’s online jewelry store asking Mormons to take a look at the spiritual implications of what the trinkets for their charm bracelets and necklaces meant. Then Melissa noticed in the Christmas season they were selling replicas of the angel of light Moroni as a Christmas tree topper and we pointed out the spiritual dangers of that as well.
So while perusing their site earlier this week I came across many of the same things we pointed out last time in addition to a few other items. In light of our findings we thought it’d be worthwhile to take a look at what the following items mean spiritually.

D&C 8:6-9, 11; “Now this is not all thy gift; for you have another gift, which is the gift of Aaron; behold, it has told you many things; 7 Behold, there is no other power, save the power of God, that can cause this gift of Aaron to be with you. 8 Therefore, doubt not, for it is the gift of God; and you shall hold it in your hands, and do marvelous works; and no power shall be able to take it away out of your hands, for it is the work of God. 9 And, therefore, whatsoever you shall ask me to tell you by that means, that will I grant unto you, and you shall have knowledge concerning it. 11 Ask that you may know the mysteries of God, and that you may translate and receive knowledge from all those ancient records which have been hid up, that are sacred; and according to your faith shall it be done unto you.”

Joseph’s “Sacred Grove”
Joseph Smith Testimony 1:14-15; “So, in accordance with this, my determination to ask of God, I retired to the woods to make the attempt. It was on the morning of a beautiful, clear day, early in the spring of eighteen hundred and twenty. It was the first time in my life that I had made such an attempt, for amidst all my anxieties I had never as yet made the attempt to pray vocally. 15 After I had retired to the place where I had previously designed to go, having looked around me, and finding myself alone, I kneeled down and began to offer up the desires of my heart to God. I had scarcely done so, when immediately I was seized upon by some power which entirely overcame me, and had such an astonishing influence over me as to bind my tongue so that I could not speak. Thick darkness gathered around me, and it seemed to me for a time as if I were doomed to sudden destruction.”
