Posts Tagged ‘Moroni’

One of my first memories in life was sitting in my ward building learning for the first time Joseph Smith was tarred and feathered in 1832 just because he told people about the vision he had.  The horror I felt in my body was something I can still feel just as I did 50+ years ago.

What I wasn’t taught in those early impressionable years, is my focus here today. It wasn’t until after I got out of the Church that I learned about the contradictions in Smith’s story. While there were a handful of questions in my mind when I left Mormonism, it never dawned on me just how many contradictions there were, or the vastness and totality of what he’d done.

Moroni the Fulfillment of Scripture?

salt lake mormon temple 2Joseph Smith’s Commentary on the Bible, pg 225; “The angel flying through the midst of heaven: Moroni delivered the Book of Mormon.”

Revelation 14:6; “And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people.”

How could Moroni be the fulfillment of a future event about the tribulation in 1830?

Thought of the Day about Mormonism and Facebook

stickman thinking 3Today Melissa sent me an e-mail with the picture that’s at the end of this article. She found it on the LDS’ Facebook page under other miscellaneous photos they provided for members to attach to their FB pages.

Melissa was telling me the first thing she thought of was how she couldn’t get the words “obey” and “law” out of her head. She said they make it sound like God is some sort of dictator and I couldn’t agree more!

Pride in Being a Mormon

Mormon Decisions 10Discourses of Brigham Young, pg 30; “Take a pride in acknowledging the Savior. Train and educate yourselves until you will take a pride in acknowledging God, the Author of all. Take a pride in the religion that makes you pure and holy, and that produces in the heart of every individual who embraces it a feeling to be truthful in every word he speaks, to be honest in every act he performs, in all his dealings with his neighbors. Take a pride in this and fear not the wicked. 12:326”

Matthew 6:21; “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”

The Golden Plates of Mormonism

Encyclopedia of Mormonism, pg. 555;While the plates were in Joseph’s keeping, others saw them, including eleven witnesses whose testimonies appear in all editions of the book.  Various descriptions provided by eyewitnesses suggest that the plates may have been made of a gold alloy, measured about 6 inches by 8 inches (15.2 cm by 20.3 cm), were 6 inches (15.2 cm) thick, and weighed about 50 pounds (22.7 kg).

Mosiah 8:9;And for a testimony that the things that they had said are true they have brought twenty-four plates which are filled with engravings, and they are of pure gold.

Today we’re looking at the gold plates and Joseph Smith’s character.  Where are the plates today?  Were they made of gold or something resembling gold?  The many descriptions of the plates remind me of Joseph Smith.  Some say he was the real deal just as those plates, while others tell a story of a man that looks good on the outside, but when you get up close it becomes clear all that glitters isn’t gold.

The Sticks of Judah and Joseph

The Mormon quotes we’re using today are found in the Ensign and also used in an LDS Gem I received from the Church when I signed up for their daily scripture readings a few years ago.  It was titled “Biblical Descriptions of the Book of Mormon” so if you’d like to see the article in full, see Scriptural Witnesses.

Bible and Book of Mormon Authenticate Each Other

Ensign, Nov. 2007, 43; “Scriptural witnesses authenticate each other. This concept was explained long ago when a prophet wrote that the Book of Mormon was ‘written for the intent that ye may believe [the Bible]; and if ye believe [the Bible] ye will believe [the Book of Mormon] also’ (Mormon 7:9). Each book refers to the other. Each book stands as evidence that God lives and speaks to His children by revelation to His prophets.

Love for the Book of Mormon expands one’s love for the Bible and vice versa. Scriptures of the Restoration do not compete with the Bible; they complement the Bible. We are indebted to martyrs who gave their lives so that we could have the Bible. It establishes the everlasting nature of the gospel and of the plan of happiness. The Book of Mormon restores and underscores biblical doctrines such as tithing, the temple, the Sabbath day, and the priesthood.” – Russell M. Nelson, “Scriptural Witnesses”

Book of Mormon Witnesses

When I was a member of the Church I honestly never thought about checking up on the witnesses of the Book of Mormon.  I grew up believing that I belonged to “the only true church on the face of the earth” and even though there were teachings about the Church I didn’t agree with, it never occurred to me they didn’t have physical proof for the Book of Mormon.

Moroni a Symbol of the Gospel

Gordon B. Hinckley, Heroes from the Book of Mormon, pg. 195; From my window I frequently look at the figure of Moroni on the tallest tower of the Salt Lake Temple. He has been there since 6 April 1892…When the capstone was placed, thousands of voices joined in shouting, “Hosanna to God and the Lamb.” Later that day the statue was placed on top of the capstone.

Today, strangers who see him wonder who he is…Others are simply puzzled…But he is no puzzle to us. He is a symbol of the restoration of the gospel in this the dispensation of the fulness of times…Of all the characters who walk the pages of the Book of Mormon, none stands a greater hero, save Jesus only, than does Moroni, son of Mormon.

Law of Moses and Salvation through Christ

Alma 25:16;Now they did not suppose that salvation came by the law of Moses; but the law of Moses did serve to strengthen their faith in Christ; and thus they did retain a hope through faith, unto eternal salvation, relying upon the spirit of prophecy, which spake of those things to come.” – BC 90

John 5:39-40; Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.  40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

How do you strengthen the Law of Moses through faith in Christ when it’s 90 BC?

ANGEL OF LIGHT

Aggelos; a messenger.

Phos; face, luminous, fire, light

We’re taking a look at what Joseph Smith said when the angel Moroni came to visit him with the message of the Book of Mormon.  This was one of the most startling finds for me personally when I came out of the church.  I had already come to the conclusion the Church was wrong, but this rocked my world.  It honestly took me a few days to recover spiritually speaking from the truth that I found.

Testing for Truth

Part 1

This series was written by a friend of mine, Jared.  He called the ministry one day and asked if he could help in any way.  The three articles were a huge blessing to us and we’re praying the Mormon will look at them objectively and take them into consideration.  So here we go – enjoy!

Moroni or Nephi, Who Visited Joseph that Night?

Introductory page of D&C 1976, 3rd paragraph; This took place in the early spring of 1820.  In September, 1823, and at later times, Joseph Smith received visitations from Moroni, an angel of light, who revealed the resting place of the ancient record from which The Book of Mormon was afterward translated.

God’s Holy Word and the Mormon Prophets

How can all 16 of the so-called men of God not believe Him?

When I hear songs like the one above by Casting Crowns I can’t help but flash back to a time when my view of Jesus was very different from what it is today. As a Mormon the Jesus I believed in was my elder spirit brother, he was also a created being and the one we choose to follow in a pre-earth life and who atoned for our sins in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Inspired of God?  Difficulties in the Book of Mormon

“All scripturei s given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” 2 Timothy 3:16.

The key word here is inspiration.  This word in the Greek is theopneustos.  It means God breathed.  Look anywhere in the Bible, there is nothing in it that contradicts itself, there are no mistakes, and it is all one hundred percent perfect! Archaeologists will sometimes use the Bible to search for the spots they want to investigate.  There are hundreds of documents which prove the Bible to be true, from Josephus of the first century to the Dead Sea Scrolls.  Each time they find something new, it validates what the Bible says!
