Journal of Discourses 5:27–28; “Here in Great Salt Lake City is the seat of government for the Church and Kingdom of God, pertaining to
every person that has ever come into a probation on this earth, whether they are now in tabernacles upon this earth, or whether they are in the spirit world, or in hell. This is the place of deposit of all those keys pertaining to the salvation of the human family; and there never will one soul of those spirits now in prison come out of that place, except the keys of the kingdom of God that are now held in Great Salt Lake City open the door and let them out. They may peep and mutter, and may have revelations until doomsday, and may declare to all eternity that Joseph Smith is a false prophet, and that brother Brigham is a false prophet, and that this Church is false, and they will still remain in hell until we let them out.

Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith, (2011), Chapter 27: ‘Beware the Bitter Fruits of Apostasy,’ pp. 315–26;
“There is a superior intelligence bestowed upon such as obey the Gospel with full purpose of heart, which, if sinned against, the apostate is left naked and destitute of the Spirit of God, and he is, in truth, nigh unto cursing, and his end is to be burned. When once that light which was in them is taken from them they become as much darkened as they were previously enlightened, and then, no marvel, if all their power should be enlisted against the truth, and they, Judas-like, seek the destruction of those who were their greatest benefactors.”

A few years ago Melissa wrote a great article on temple garments every Mormon is required to wear when they become temple worthy. Her insight on what it means to be spiritually tied down to a piece of clothing is fantastic!
A recent e-mail from someone who is just leaving the Church prompted me to go back and read her article, and while doing so a few questions came to mind. Surprise, I know!

Far, Far Greater Than The Intellect,” 22 August, 1981; “There is a temptation for the writer or the teacher of Church history to want to tell everything, whether it is worthy or faith promoting or not. Some things that are true are not very useful.” – Boyd K. Packer

teachings of Jesus and his prophets, and in discerning and strictly heeding the guidance of the spirit of Christ which “giveth light to every man that cometh into the world; and (which) … enlighteneth every man through the world, that hearkeneth to the voice of the Spirit.

Mormonism and the Cost of Happiness

Today we’re doing things a little differently! Woo-hoo!
To start off with, let’s take a look at what God tells us through His prophet Isaiah about putting our trust in Him.
Isaiah 12:2; “Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.”
That one verse would put an end to all the ‘isms’ in the world if we’d just heed what it says.

History of the Church 2:190; “The Blessing of David W. Patten David W. Patten’s blessing: O God, give this Thy servant, a knowledge of Thy will; may he be like one of old, who bore testimony of Jesus; may he be a new man from this day forth. He shall be equal with his brethren, the Twelve, and have the qualifications of the prophets before him. May his body be strong and never be weary; may he walk and not faint. May he have power over all diseases, and faith according to his desires; may the heavens be opened upon him speedily; that he may bear testimony from knowledge; that he may go to nations and isles afar off. May he have a knowledge of the things of the Kingdom, from the beginning, and be able to tear down priestcraft like a lion. May he have power to smite his enemies before him, with utter destruction. May he continue till the Lord comes. O Father, we seal these blessings upon him. Even so. Amen.” – February 15, 1835

[Heber J. Grant] For your information, please be advised that the
Corporation of the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a corporation sole, organized under the law of the State of Utah for religious, educational and charitable purposes. It is distinct from the ordinary business corporation in that it has no board of directors and no by-laws. The President of the Church is the corporation. As a corporation sole he is fully empowered and authorized by law to handle all financial and property matters pertaining to the Church, including depositing in banks and checking against the same. – Heber J. They say the bad thing about telling a lie is having to remember everything you said. Apparently Joe Smith didn’t get the memo on that one.
Today we’re looking at three lies Mr. Smith tried to pass off as revelations from God, and in case you didn’t know, all three contradict each other. It’s strange considering he pronounced the Book of Mormon as the ‘most correct book on earth’…

Matthew 5:33-37 “Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: 34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne: 35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. 36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. 37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.”
The prophecies, mandates, and requirements Mormons must obey are just silly. Furthermore, how do they reconcile what Jesus said in the Beatitudes?
If the title of our article was true, then anyone could get into heaven. The only thing someone would have to do is read a couple of articles on the internet to find out what the secret passwords are. Does this sound biblical, or even rational to you?

History of the Church 2:189; “The Blessing of Orson Hyde
Orson Hyde’s Blessing: Oliver Cowdery called upon the Lord to smile upon him; that his faith be made perfect, and that the blessings pronounced may be realized; that he be made mighty, and be endued with powers from on high, and go forth to the nations of the earth to proclaim the Gospel, that he may escape all the pollutions of the world; that the angels shall uphold him; and that he shall go forth according to the commandment, both to Jew and Gentile, and to all nations, kingdoms and tongues; that all who hear his voice shall acknowledge him to be a servant of God; that he shall be equal with his brethren in holding the keys of the kingdom; that he may stand on the earth and bring souls till Christ comes. We know that he loves Thee, O, Lord, and may this Thy servant be able to walk through pestilence and not be harmed; and the powers of darkness have no ascendency over him; may he have power to smite the earth with pestilence; to divide waters, and lead through the Saints; may he go from land to land and from sea to sea, and may he be like one of the three Nephites.”

How does the Church define ‘the first resurrection’?
Chances are, most Mormons wouldn’t know what their church teaches about this, and their prophet Joseph Smith didn’t make things easy for anyone.
Let’s take a look at what ol’ Joe had to say about the first resurrection, and then compare his words with what he wrote in the Book of Mormon –

This topic should be the catalyst to investigate Mormonism with a fine-toothed comb. The very foundation for all of Mormonism is built upon the story of Joe Smith’s claim he had a face to face encounter with God. That alone warrants such attention!
Setting aside the conflicting stories of when Smith actually saw God, and the problems of when he and Cowdery officially received the priesthood, let’s look at the topic independent of those two inherent problems.

With all the false teachers in the world, we were wondering what the Church’s position is on this subject matter. As you might expect, they’re all over the board.
To start off, the BoM says all false teachers will be trust down to hell
2 Nephi 28:15; “…all those who preach false doctrines,.., wo, wo, wo, be unto them, saith the Lord God Almighty, for they shall be thrust down to hell!”

Book of Mormon Translation Issues
Another proof the Book of Mormon can’t be a translation from the Nephites who died off circa 421 AD is found in the KJV.
Italicized words in the King James Bible were added by translators for the reader. As languages are translated from one to the other, filler words are sometimes needed because idioms and word meanings don’t translate directly.

Ah, the ever popular Moroni 10:4 verse Mormon missionaries like to use with promising converts… While the intro for this may seem light-hearted, the subject matter is anything but.
By and large Christians are a trusting group, and many times too much so. Taking people at face value, and thinking the best of others, too often Christians miss the tell-tale signs of danger lurking at the door. A few days ago we looked at the dangers of angels of light and our focus today is what they do to the flock.

“…with W.W. Phelps and Oliver Cowdery as scribes, I commenced the translation of some of the characters or hieroglyphics, and much to our joy found that one of the rolls contained the writings of Abraham, another the writings of Joseph of Egypt, etc., – a more full account which will appear in its place, as I proceed to examine or unfold them. Truly we can say, the Lord is beginning to reveal the abundance of peace and truth.” (History of the Church 2:236)
Whenever I see parts of the Mormon scripture trying to pawn off Egyptian writings as a holy message from God, the words of Isaiah come to mind. I always wonder if any Mormon has seen what Isaiah wrote, and if so, what’s their response to God’s warning?
