I saw an article in LDS Living that caught my eye yesterday with the title Why Do Mormons Struggle So Much with Grace?  Now, I must confess there was a part of my that wanted to jump up, raise my hand and say “I know, I know. Pick me, pick me!!” after reading it.

The short answer is because they don’t understand it, nor have they been taught the biblical view of God’s grace. The idea of being saved by grace after nothing I did was a foreign concept to me as a new creation in Jesus Christ. I thought to myself, there has to be something I must to earn my place in God’s presence.

Here are Questions 14 to 17 in our series based on the article ’51 Questions that might lead you to Mormonism’.

Just to let you know, after consulting with Michelle I don’t believe I’m going to answer all the questions in his article. However, I do plan on answering the ones that pertain directly to Mormon doctrine, and those which use scripture as a means to mislead the lost or cast doubts on what God has actually said.

January 23 – The Promise.  God explicitly told Abraham the promise of his seed would come through the lineage of Isaac.  Gen. 17:19; “And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant and with his seed after him”.

Mormon Decisions 102 Nephi 10:24; “24 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, reconcile yourselves to the will of God, and not to the will of the devil and the flesh; and remember, after ye are reconciled unto God, that it is only in and through the grace of God that ye are saved.”

2 Nephi 25:23; “23 For we labor diligently to write, to persuade our children, and also our brethren, to believe in Christ, and to be reconciled to God; for we know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do.”

Lying to Deceive

Mosiah 3:19; “For the natural man is an enemy to God, and has been from the fall of Adam, and will be, forever and ever, unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man and becometh a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord, and becometh as a child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father.”

Works for Salvation

2004 Priesthood/R.S. Manual – page 31; “There is but one path of safety for the Latter-Day Saints, and that is the path of duty. It is not a testimony only; it is not marvelous manifestations; it is not knowing that the gospel of Jesus Christ is true, that it is the plan of salvation — it is not actually knowing that the Savior is the Redeemer, and that Joseph Smith was his prophet, that will save you and me, but it is the keeping of the commandments of God, living the life of a Latter-Day Saint.” – Heber J. Grant

Bible vs. Book of Mormon

Come, Listen to a Prophet’s Voice, pg. 15; Of the four great standard works of the Church—the Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price—I would particularly urge you to read again and again the Book of Mormon and ponder and apply its teachings. The Book of Mormon was referred to by the Prophet Joseph Smith as “the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man [and woman] would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book.”” – Ezra Taft Benson

July 29 – Luke 18:9-14; “And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: 10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.  11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.  12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. 13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Mormon Terminology and Grace

2 Nephi 25:23 says; “…for we know that it is by grace we are saved, after all we can do”.

“God’s grace consists in his love, mercy, and condescension toward his children…

Grace is granted to men proportionately as they conform to the standards of personal righteousness that are part of the gospel plan. Thus the saints are commanded to “grow in grace” (D. & C. 50:40), until they are sanctified and justified…Grace is an attribute of perfection possessed by Deity (D. & C. 66:12; 84:102)… The same path to perfection is offered to man.”  Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, 339.

A Woman’s Duty is to Bring Forth Spirit Babies

Journal of Discourses 4:56; Do you understand this? I have told you many times that there are multitudes of pure and holy spirits waiting to take tabernacles, now what is our duty?—to prepare tabernacles for them; to take a course that will not tend to drive those spirits into the families of the wicked, where they will be trained in wickedness, debauchery, and every species of crime. It is the duty of every righteous man and woman to prepare tabernacles for all the spirits they can; hence if my women leave, I will go and search up others who will abide the celestial law…This is the reason why the doctrine of plurality of wives was revealed, that the noble spirits which are waiting for tabernacles might be brought forth.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, September 21, 1856

Mormon Dilemmas 15

The ex-communication of Hyram Brown

It’s a problem when the Church practices one thing while preaching another.  On Thursday, February 1, 1844 the Times and Seasons published a notice declaring one of their adherents, Hyram Brown, had “been preaching polygamy and other false and corrupt doctrines…” (Times and Seasons vol. 5, pg. 423)

Atonement

Ensign, November 2008, pg. 57; “”[The] testing of our limits in priesthood service is made necessary by God’s plan to qualify His children to live with Him again forever. Heavenly Father loves His children…To qualify us to receive that gift, He gave us a mortal body, the opportunity to be tempted to sin, and a way to be cleansed from that sin and to rise in the First Resurrection. He gave us His Beloved Son, Jehovah, as our Savior to make that possible. The Savior was born in mortal life, was tempted but never sinned, and then in Gethsemane and on Golgotha paid the price of our sins so that we could be cleansed. The purifying can come only to those who have faith enough in Jesus Christ to repent of sin, be cleansed through the ordinance of baptism, and make and keep covenants to obey all His commandments. And there was to be a fierce enemy of our souls, Lucifer, who would with his legions relentlessly try to capture every child of God to keep him or her from having the joy of eternal life.”” – Henry B. Eyring

Contradictions in the Doctrine and Covenants

Today we’re wondering why the prophecy declared by Joseph Smith contradicts what has taken place in the Mormon Church.  As you’ll see from the text, God told Joseph that whoever performs or declares more than repentance and coming to Christ is not in obedience.

Nauvoo Missions Report 2

This had to be one of the most successful mission trips that we have had to date!  While we spent many hours passing out tracts to the Mormon people we were also blessed by being able to spend time with the young Mormon missionaries and having the opportunity to witness to others as we took tours at the various ‘tourist sites’.  The thing that touched me personally was the number of non-white Mormons that attended this year’s celebration of Joseph.  As I handed out hundreds of tracts I couldn’t get Moses 7:22; Abraham 1:27; and the other references to the curse of Cain out of my head.  I can only imagine that they are feeling the shame that I once did as a Mormon of not being white and delightsome.
