Conference Report October 1926, 117 In reference to the modern inventions, then apostle Joseph Fielding Smith, made the following comments – “…I think this is very wonderful; and yet, this great discovery [the radio] did not come through revelation to a member of the Church; it was not sent through one who holds the Priesthood, but it came through one not of the Church but who was inspired of the Lord to give this great blessing to the world.

So with many other things, the automobile and the airplane as means of transportation; the talking machine and all of these great discoveries that have come through scientific research, they have come, most of them, outside of the Church. Yet I maintain that had there been no restoration of the gospel, and no organization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, there would have been no radio; there would have been no airplane, and there would not have been the wonderul [sic] discoveries in medicine, chemistry, electricity, and the many other things wherein the world has been benefited by such discoveries.

Under such conditions these blessings would have been withheld, for they belong to the Dispensation of the Fulness of Times of which the restoration of the gospel and the organization of the Church constitute the central point…” — Joseph Fielding Smith [emp. added] (more…)

January 24 – Nephi Traded the Tabernacle for a Wigwam. Exodus 12:46 “In one house shall it be eaten; thou shalt not carry forth ought of the flesh abroad out of the house; neither shall ye break a bone thereof.”

John 19:31-36 “The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. 32 Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him. 33 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: 34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. 35 And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe. 36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.”

January 23 – Why Mormons Pass Over God’s Passover Miracle. Exodus 12:21-27 “Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel, and said unto them, Draw out and take you a lamb according to your families, and kill the passover. 22 And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the bason, and strike the lintel and the two side posts with the blood that is in the bason; and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning. 23 For the LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the LORD will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you. 24 And ye shall observe this thing for an ordinance to thee and to thy sons for ever. 25 And it shall come to pass, when ye be come to the land which the LORD will give you, according as he hath promised, that ye shall keep this service. 26 And it shall come to pass, when your children shall say unto you, What mean ye by this service? 27 That ye shall say, It is the sacrifice of the LORD’s passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses. And the people bowed the head and worshipped.”

1 Corinthians 5;7 “Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us.”

1 John 2:9 “He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.”

Today we’re looking at excerpts taken from a Mormon circular published in 1848 by LDS apostle, Orson Spencer.

While we’re not immune to coming across anti-Christian literature in Mormon propaganda, it was surprising to see an entire booklet dedicated to defaming Christianity. The booklet was written and printed for members living in Great Britain just four years after Joe, and Hyrum Smith were killed in Nauvoo, IL. Because of its sheer length, we’ve pulled a few quotes for examples. To read their entire circular, see link provided below.

Sadly, the Church’s attitude towards Christianity hasn’t changed. Proof  of this is seen in their canon — 1 Nephi 14:10. (more…)

The Latter-day Saints’ Millennial Star, Volume 17, No. 14, April 7, 1855, p. 212 “We are not ashamed to declare that we are polygamists. We are not ashamed to proclaim to the great nation…that is part and parcel of our religious creed.

We do this calmly, seriously, and understandingly; after due deliberation…we unhesitatingly pronounce our full and implicit faith in this principle, as emanating from God, and that under His direction it would be a blessing to the human family.” — Franklin D. Richards (more…)

Ensign, ‘What Every Elder Should Know, and Every Sister As Well,’ February 1993 “There are some things about the priesthood that every elder should know if he is to understand how the Church is governed. … There are principles and precepts and rules which are often overlooked and seldom taught. Some of these are found in the scriptures, others in the handbooks. Some of them are not found in either. They are found in the Church. You might call them traditions, but they are more than that. They are revelations which came when the brethren of the past assembled themselves, agreed upon his word, and offered their prayers of faith.” — Boyd K. Packer (more…)

Ensign, ‘The Mystery of Life,’ October 1983 “There is no way to make sense out of life without a knowledge of the doctrine of premortal life. The idea that mortal birth is the beginning is preposterous. There is no way to explain life if you believe that. The notion that life ends with mortal death is ridiculous. There is no way to face life if you believe that. When we understand the doctrine of premortal life, then things fit together and make sense. We then know that little boys and little girls are not monkeys, nor are their parents, nor were theirs, to the very beginning generation. We are the children of God, created in his image. Our child-parent relationship to God is clear. The purpose for the creation of this earth is clear. The testing that comes in mortality is clear. The need for a redeemer is clear. When we do understand that principle of the gospel, we see a Heavenly Father and a Son; we see an atonement and a redemption. We understand why ordinances and covenants are necessary. We understand the necessity for baptism by immersion for the remission of sins. We understand why we renew that covenant by partaking of the sacrament. I have but touched upon the doctrine of premortal life. We cannot, in these brief conference talks, do more than that. Oh, if we but had a day, or even an hour, to speak of it.” — Boyd K. Packer (more…)
