February 9 – Moroni, an angel of light. God’s Word is full of examples on how we can recognize the evil one. In 2 Cor. 11:14 Paul says; “And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light”.

December 16 – Isaiah 53:5, 11; “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.”

September 19 – Matthew 17:1-5; “And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him. Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.”

The Bible and Another Gospel
In the January 2011 edition of the Ensign I came across an article entitled “The Scriptures Teach and Testify of Jesus Christ”.
http://lds.org/ensign/2011/01/the-scriptures-teach-and-testify-of-jesus-christ?lang=eng
What I found interesting in this article is the manipulative way the Church goes about confusing its members. At the onset of this article it says “The main purpose of the scriptures is to testify of Christ, helping us come unto Him and receive eternal life (see John 5:39).”

Their Advertising Campaign for Mitt and Jon
According to the NY Times in November 2011, the Mormons hired two big name advertising agencies in 2009, Ogilvy and Mather and Hall and Partners, to gather info on what people thought of Mormons. For those who answered in the focus groups they found that if they had any opinion at all it was negative, listing their reasons as ““secretive”, “cultish”, “sexist”, “controlling”, “pushy”, and “anti-gay””. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/18/us/mormon-ad-campaign-seeks-to-improve-perceptions.html?pagewanted=all

What does it mean to be “reverent”?
Encyclopedia of Mormonism, pg. 1229; “Reverence is expected to pervade public places of worship as well. Because Latter-day Saints tend to be vibrant and sociable and because they often worship with their children, the Church leaders periodically emphasize the importance of reverence. Addressing the issue, President Gordon B. Hinckley stated, “We encourage the cultivation of friends with happy conversations among our people. However, these should take place in the foyer, and when we enter the chapel we should understand that we are in sacred precincts…. All who come into the Lord’s house should have a feeling they are walking and standing on holy ground” (Ensign 17 [May 1987]:45).”

Baptism for the Dead and being Born Again
I often wonder what Mormons think of the passage of scripture in John when Nicodemus asked Jesus what he must do to be born again. While we’ve explored this issue in our Mormon Dilemmas section before, today I began wondering about another angle to this scenario.
If Jesus told Nicodemus he had to be born again then how are dead people born again?
John 3:3; “Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
The Mormon Church teaches that they can’t be saved without their dead and the dead can’t be saved without members doing works for them in the temple.
D&C 128:18; “…baptism for the dead. For we without them cannot be made perfect; neither can they without us be made perfect.”
So how can a dead person be born again? Remember, we’re not talking about being spiritually dead, but a literal dead person.
The Mormons I’ve spoken with have told me the person who is dead has the choice of accepting or rejecting that which was done for them in the temple. But this doesn’t answer the question so it’s something I’d keep asking them about.
I also wonder how they feel about Moroni 10:26 and 2 Nephi 9:38 in light of the Doctrine and Covenants passage listed above.
Moroni 10:26; “And wo unto them who shall do these things away and die, for they die in their sins, and they cannot be saved in the kingdom of God; and I speak it according to the words of Christ; and I lie not.”
2 Nephi 9:38; “And, in fine, wo unto all those who die in their sins; for they shall return to God, and behold his face, and remain in their sins.”

Jesus the Only Begotten?
Gospel Through the Ages, pg. 15; “The appointment of Jesus to be the Savior of the world was contested by one of the other sons of God. He was called Lucifer, son of the morning. Haughty, ambitious, and covetous of power and glory, this spirit-brother of Jesus desperately tried to become the Savior of mankind. At the great council he proposed a new plan of salvation, event, the Lord revealed the following to Moses…”
