February 8 – 2 Peter 1:20-21; “Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.”

Spirit of Man Contaminated Upon Birth

The Seer, “The Pre-existence of Man,” Vol. 1, No. 7, July, 1853, p. 98; “Spirits, though pure and innocent, before they entered the body, would become contaminated by entering a fallen tabernacle; not contaminated by their own sins, but by their connection with a body brought into the world by the fall, earthly, fallen, imperfect, and corrupt in its nature. A spirit, having entered such a tabernacle, though it may commit no personal sin, is unfit to return again into the presence of a holy Being. . .” – Orson Pratt, Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

The other day we looked at one of Orson Pratt’s false prophecies/teachings. His statement that the body of Christ ceased to exist, is of course, a lie. That being said, there was something else in his sermon we’re going to look at today. As a reminder, let’s take a look at his comments and then we’ll ask some questions!
Journal of Discourses 13:125; “Jesus made his appearance on the earth in the meridian of time, and he established his kingdom on the earth. But to fulfill ancient prophecies the Lord suffered that kingdom to be uprooted; in other words, the kingdoms of this world made war against the kingdom of God, established eighteen centuries ago, and they prevailed against it, and the kingdom ceased to exist. The great beast that John saw made war with it and prevailed against it, and human institutions, without prophets or inspired men, usurped the place of the ancient kingdom of God.” – Orson Pratt, Salt Lake City, April 10, 1870

Journal of Discourses 14:242; “There are no marriages among spirits, no coupling together of the males and females among them; but when they rise from the grave after being tabernacled in
mortal bodies, they have all the functions that are necessary to people worlds. As our Father and God begat us sons and daughters, so will we rise immortal males and females, and beget children and, in our turn, form and create worlds, and send forth our spirit children to inherit those worlds, the same as we were sent here, and thus will the works of God continue, and not only God himself, and His Son Jesus Christ have the power of endless lives, but all of His redeemed offspring.” – Orson Pratt, Salt Lake City, August 20, 1871

Fiftieth Annual Conference Report of the Mormon Church, 1880, pp. 86-87; “…a new witness that the Lord seems to have brought
to light, by the opening of the Great Pyramid of Egypt. There seems to be a prophetic spirit running through the construction of all that cast superstructure, pointing forward to the very end. Allowing one year to a cubit inch the generation that will close up the times of the Gentiles.” – Orson Pratt

Orson Pratt “Minutes of the Meeting of the Council of the Twelve in Historian’s Upper Room,” April 5, 1860, 10 a.m; “I have heard brother
Brigham say that Adam is the Father of our spirits, and he came here with his resurrected body, to fall for his own children; and I said to him, it leads to an endless number of falls, which leads to sorrow and death: that is revolting to my feelings, even if it were not sustained by revelation.”

Journal of Discourses 14:244-245; “Perhaps you may think that Brother Pratt is rather enthusiastic and fanatical in his ideas to suppose that
immortal beings can multiply; but I would ask any person who has read the first and second chapters of Genesis if the command which was first given to multiply was not given to two immortal beings who had not yet fallen? If, therefore, two immortal beings, were then commanded to multiply, why should it be thought incredible that immortal beings who are raised from the grave and restored to all that which Adam and his wife possessed before the Fall, should have the power to do the same?” — Orson Pratt, Salt Lake City, August 20, 1871

Bennett. She countered that Joseph Smith had proposed she become one of his ‘celestial wives,’ and that Brigham Young had urged her to say nothing, but ‘do as Joseph wished.’” – Richard S. Hosea Stout Utah’s Pioneer Statesman, p 234; “One of the great triumphs of Mormonism was the discovery that the Book of Mormon was indeed an authentic history of ancient North and South America. In a great speech delivered in the Tabernacle (January 2), Orson Pratt announced to the world that there was more evidence proving the authenticity of the Book of Mormon than there was for the Bible! The irony of this truth lay in the fact that non-Mormon scientists were making these discoveries!”

Exodus 12:46; “In one house shall it be eaten; thou shalt not carry forth ought of the flesh abroad out of the house; neither shall ye break a bone thereof.”
John 19:31-36; “The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. 32 Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him. 33 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: 34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. 35 And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe. 36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.”

Journal of Discourses 2:342; “There is one revelation that this people are not generally acquainted with. I think it has never been published, but probably it will be in the Church History. It is given in questions and answers. The first question is, “What is the name of God in the pure language?” The answer says “Ahman.” “What is the name of the Son of God?” Answer, “Son Ahman—the greatest of all the parts of God excepting Ahman.” “What is the name of men?” “Sons Ahman,” is the answer. “What is the name of angels in the pure language?” “Anglo-man.” – Orson Pratt, Salt Lake City, February 18, 1855

Continuing along in our mini-series of Mormon quotes, I thought this subject matter was worthy of mention!
As I said before when we’re posting these things day after day it doesn’t dawn on us just how many outrageous teachings they’ve uttered. What sticks out the most to me personally is how many of the Mormon leaders say such ridiculous things. It’s not just one of two of them and it’s not just on a rare occurrence – it’s happened quite often with no rhyme nor reason. Once we get them in one concise setting, the doors of their bizarre way of thinking become clearly evident.

Journal of Discourses 14:11; “He came down and stood in their midst, and showed them the scars in his hands and feet, and in his side; and after visiting them for several days successively, he told them that he was going to the ten tribes of Israel. He also chose twelve disciples to administer his Gospel on this land and for the ministration of the Holy Ghost. The twelve disciples went forth and preached the Gospel, commencing in South America, and then went into North America, until all the people both in North and South America were converted, receiving the principles of the Gospel-namely, baptism, and the laying on of hands, and all the other principles as preached in our day.” – Orson Pratt, Salt Lake City, February 19, 1871

The Seer p 159; “One thing is certain, that there were several holy women that greatly loved Jesus — such as Mary, and Martha her sister, and Mary Magdalene; and Jesus greatly loved them, and associated with them much; and when He arose from the dead, instead of showing Himself to His chosen witnesses, the Apostles, He appeared first to these women, or at least to one of them — namely, Mary Magdalene. Now it would be natural for a husband in the resurrection to appear first to his own dear wives, and afterwards show himself to his other friends. If all the acts of Jesus were written, we no doubt should learn that these beloved women were His wives” – Orson Pratt, LDS Apostle

Journal of Discourses 12:342; “After the destruction of the Jaredites, the Lord brought two other colonies to people this land. One colony landed a few hundred miles north of the Isthmus on the western coast; the other landed on the coast of Chili, upwards of two thousand miles south of them. The latter were called the Nephites and Lamanites. It was some four or five centuries after these two colonies came from Jerusalem and occupied the country before they amalgamated. A little over one century before Christ the Nephites united with the Zarahemlaites in the northern portions of South America, and were called Nephites and became a powerful nation.” – Orson Pratt, Salt Lake City, December 27, 1868
