Devotional

BYU-Idaho Devotional, ‘President Thomas S. Monson: Taking Temples to All the World,’ September 20, 2011; “Being worthy of a temple recommend, and actively worshiping in the temple is an important part of the whole armor of God, literally part of the oil in our lanterns in preparation for the glorious second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. The temple provides us with protection against Satan and the whirlwinds of his temptations.” – Thomas E. Coburn, Managing Director, Temple Department

Noel B ReynoldsBook of Mormon Authorship: New Light on Ancient Origins [Provo: BYU Religious Studies Center, 1982], 8; “By its own account, the Book of Mormon is for doubters. It announces on its title page a clear purpose for all the hard labor of preserving records: “To the convincing of the Jew and Gentile that JESUS is the CHRIST, the ETERNAL GOD.” That statement presupposes that there would be serious and searing doubt in the world and that even religious readers, whatever their Messianic expectations, would not only raise questions about the historicity of this or that segment of the life of Jesus, but about the whole religious enterprise.” – Noel B. Reynolds, ed.

Orson PrattJournal of Discourses 13:125; “Jesus made his appearance on the earth in the meridian of time, and he established his kingdom on the earth. But to fulfill ancientsalt lake mormon temple 2 prophecies the Lord suffered that kingdom to be uprooted; in other words, the kingdoms of this world made war against the kingdom of God, established eighteen centuries ago, and they prevailed against it, and the kingdom ceased to exist. The great beast that John saw made war with it and prevailed against it, and human institutions, without prophets or inspired men, usurped the place of the ancient kingdom of God.” – Orson Pratt, Salt Lake City, April 10, 1870

Mormon Decisions 10“Evidences and Reconciliations”, pg. 149; “Every person must decide for himself, on the basis of the evidence produced, which of these threeJohn_A._Widtsoe opinions as to the age of the earth, before Adam, seems most reasonable to him, whether (1) six days, or (2) six thousand years, or (3) may millions of years. Clearly it does not matter to one’s daily welfare or ultimate salvation which view he adopts, except that every Latter-day saint must seek and cherish truth above all else.” — John A. Widtsoe

Mormon Decisions 10General Conference, April 2015, “The Priesthood—a Sacred Gift”; “I echo the spirit of that special hymn and say to you: Come, all ye sons of God who have received the priesthood, letThomas Monson us consider our callings; let us reflect on our responsibilities; let us determine our duty; and let us follow Jesus Christ, our Lord. While we may differ in age, in custom, or in nationality, we are united as one in our priesthood callings. …

Brethren, each of us has been entrusted with one of the most precious gifts ever bestowed upon mankind. As we honor our priesthood and live our lives so that we are at all times worthy, the blessings of the priesthood will flow through us. …

Mormon Decisions 10General Conference, “The Eternal Blessings of Marriage,” April 3, 2011; “I have no power to describe the peace and serenity that come from the assurance that as I continue to live worthily, I will be able to be with my beloved Jeanene and our children forever because of that sacred ordinance performed with the proper priesthood authority in the house of the Lord. Our seven children are bound to us by the sacred ordinances of the temple…

Marriage provides an ideal setting for overcoming any tendency to be selfish or self-centered. I think one of the reasons that we are counseled to get married early in life is to avoid developing inappropriate character traits that are hard to change.” — Richard G. Scott

Mormon Decisions 10PBS, The Mormons; “One area of the Book of Mormon that does bother some is what they see as anachronistic doctrine; that the Book of Mormon has Christian doctrine prior to the coming of Christ; that it has seemingly New Testament doctrines appearing centuries before Jesus arrives, and it seems to be representing a form of Christianity existing in the New World where there doesn’t seem to be much evidence of that archaeologically. Christianity is invisible in the New World prior to the coming of Columbus, and so those things seem like clear anachronisms to people looking at it in that way.” – Daniel C. Peterson

Mormon Decisions 10Mortal Messiah 2:177; “It is better, no doubt, to have a false religion and to worship false gods than to have no religion and no worship at all. Neutrality is as nothing, and indifference is denigrating and damning. Those who are lukewarm—who are neither hot nor cold; who take no affirmative stand; who do not seek the blessings available through worship—will one day be spewed out of the divine mouth, as it were, and find their place in one of the lesser eternal realms.” – Bruce McConkie

Nauvoo Missions Report 2

This had to be one of the most successful mission trips that we have had to date!  While we spent many hours passing out tracts to the Mormon people we were also blessed by being able to spend time with the young Mormon missionaries and having the opportunity to witness to others as we took tours at the various ‘tourist sites’.  The thing that touched me personally was the number of non-white Mormons that attended this year’s celebration of Joseph.  As I handed out hundreds of tracts I couldn’t get Moses 7:22; Abraham 1:27; and the other references to the curse of Cain out of my head.  I can only imagine that they are feeling the shame that I once did as a Mormon of not being white and delightsome.

Ancient of Days; Jesus or Adam?

Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pg. 167; Commencing with Adam, who was the first man, who is spoken of in Daniel as being the “Ancient of Days,” or in other words, the first and oldest of all, the great, grand progenitor of whom it is said in another place he is Michael, because he was the first and father of all.

UTAH’S DARK REALITY

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) the leading cause of death in America is heart disease, with suicide ranking eleventh. [1] Compare that with what the Utah Department of Health says.  They report the leading cause of death for males between the ages of 15-44 as suicide.  The Utah External Injury Data System says that from 1992 to 1999 there were 7,713 suicides alone.  Eleven of those were between the ages of 0-9 years of age. [2]

The rate of suicide in Utah for females between the ages of 15-44 is four times the national average.  With this being said, the CDC has been “unable to explain the regional variation of suicide”.  About 20 percent of successful suicides have occurred in the 13-21 year old age bracket.  The Utah Department of Health has declared it an “epidemic”.   For the past four decades now, Utah has ranked in the top ten for numbers of suicides in the nation.  [3] What is equally disturbing is that the other nine states are located in the intermountain west and Alaska. [4]

Next to John 3:16, the Genesis scripture should be at the forefront of every believer’s mind.  Man was separated from God, thus the need for John 3:16.  It was not God’s intention for this to happen.  He knew it would happen, but it doesn’t mean that He willed it to happen.  The Mormon believes man had to sin in order to know joy, sadness and to even procreate.  They believe this sin commandment came from God.
